Differences From The Book
With the Goblet of Fire novel almost twice the length of Prisoner of Azkaban, the writers and producers reduced certain scenes and concepts to make the transition from page to screen. Director Mike Newell described the problem as one of “compressing a huge book into the compass of a movie”. This was achieved by “putting aside” all the components of the novel which did not directly relate to Harry and his journey.
Goblet of Fire is the first film adaptation not to begin at Privet Drive after the opening sequence, Harry awakens at the Burrow on the morning of the Quidditch World Cup.
The gameplay at the Quidditch World Cup was removed for timing reasons, leaving an abrupt temporal jump that some reviewers considered awkward or “rushed”. In the book, Harry and many of the Weasleys support Ireland, while in the film Harry and Ron support Bulgaria. Nonetheless, both of them admire the Bulgarian seeker Viktor Krum. The scene where Dumbledore asks Harry if he put his name in the goblet is noticeably different, in the book he asks calmly but in the film he grabs Harry and shouts at him instead.
Much of the house elves/slavery subplot, which involves Herimone’s attempt to form a group to promote their welfare is omitted. The scene where Harry hears Karkaroff arguing with Snape at the Yule Ball is cut from the film, but was shot and can be seen on the DVD extras.
Conversely, Harry’s first trial with a dragon is expanded into a extended flight around Hogwarts.

Costume And Set Design
Costume designer returned as costume designer for Goblet of Fire.:39 Temime made the Beauxbatons uniforms out of french blue silk,:13 which stood out from the muted colours of the other schools. The fabric of the uniforms “clings to their form, in complete contrast to the restrictive uniforms the Hogwarts girls wear.” The hat was designed by millinerPhilip Treacy. The Durmstrang uniform was made of thick wool,:13 with crimson robes and fur hats and capes. Temime drew inspiration from Habsburg and Russian folklore. For the Yule Ball, Temime created more than 300 costumes. Hermione’s dress, which took three months to make, was designed to be a “fairy-tale dress”, balancing “sweetness and allure” and keeping it “very prudish”, in order for it to be “slightly sexy” while still appropriate for a teenager. Moody’s coat was inspired by spaghetti westerns, with a team spending a week “aging and distressing the coat to give it a lifetime’s worth of wear.”
The local area surrounding Leavesden Studios was used for the site of the Quidditch World Cup, filmed in Ivinghoe Beacon, and Ashridge Wood, while the cliff where the characters land with the Portkey was located in Seven Sisters Country Park in Seaford, East Sussex.Kirby wires were used to suspend the actors in the air during the landing scene.

- “Finally, I wish to impress upon any of you wishing to compete that this tournament is not to be entered into lightly. As the task approaches, Ron and Hermione find time when they are not studying for their final exams to help Harry. Even McGonagall helps by allowing him to practise in her empty classroom during lunchtime. During one practice session, Ron notices Malfoy outside the castle sitting by a tree and doing something odd. Harry and Hermione also see him before they return to practice. Sirius sends Harry messages by owl each day, reminding Harry to focus on what is ahead.
On the day of the third task, Rita Skeeter releases an article claiming Harry is demented and dangerous. She uses a quote from Draco Malfoy in the article. This raises some questions between the trio, since the article mentions Harry’s scar hurting during Divination. The class takes place in the North Tower and Skeeter is not allowed inside Hogwarts, so she shouldn’t have had that information. Hermione finally figures out how Skeeter may be getting her information and leaves to put her theory to the test.

Pansy, who is quoted in the article, suggested Hermione was making illegal Love Potions. Hermione realises that Skeeter must have eavesdropped on her and Krum’s conversation on the shores of the lake, and begins wondering how Rita is getting her information. After Snape gets a hold of the article, he reads it aloud, creating further laughter from the Slytherins. He then breaks the trio up and sends them to different tables. Snape also confronts Harry over the recent theft of boomslang skin and gillyweed from his office, who has no idea what he’s talking about. He threatens Harry with Veritaserum, a potion that will cause Harry to tell the truth when consumed. Karkaroff then shows up to talk to Snape and sticks around until after class.
