What Year Was The First Harry Potter Book Published

Don't Miss

The First Edition Of Harry Potter And The Philosophers Stone Had A Print Run Of 500 Copies

Today marks 20 years since the first Harry Potter book was published

Its been twenty years since we first met the boy wizard who lived inside a cupboard under the stairs, in a perfectly normal home at Number 4 Privet Drive, thank you very much. Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone was published in 1997 on June 26, and while the first print of the hardcover ran with only a minuscule 500 copies 300 of them going to libraries the series has now sold more than 450 million copies worldwide and has been translated into 67 languages.

What we celebrate on June 26 is more than a bestselling childrens book series, but what it has come to mean and developed into in the twenty years since 1997. The everlasting effects of the magic can be seen all around the muggle world, which will now forever pale in comparison to the wonderful wizarding world created by JK Rowling. Countless Potterheads are still waiting for an owl to fly in through a window with our letters from The Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. We wont give up!

Completion Of The Series

In December 2005, Rowling stated on her web site, “2006 will be the year when I write the final book in the Harry Potter series.” Updates then followed in her online diary chronicling the progress of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, with the release date of 21 July 2007. The book itself was finished on 11 January 2007 in the Balmoral Hotel, Edinburgh, where she scrawled a message on the back of a bust of Hermes. It read: “J. K. Rowling finished writing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows in this room on 11 January 2007.”

Rowling herself has stated that the last chapter of the final book was completed “in something like 1990”. In June 2006, Rowling, on an appearance on the British talk show Richard & Judy, announced that the chapter had been modified as one character “got a reprieve” and two others who previously survived the story had in fact been killed. On 28 March 2007, the cover art for the Bloomsbury Adult and Child versions and the Scholastic version were released.

In September 2012, Rowling mentioned in an interview that she might go back to make a “director’s cut” of two of the existing Harry Potter books.

The Legacy Of The Harry Potter Series

Undeniably, the Harry Potter series is one of the greatest fantasy series to have been written thus far. Of course, it is perhaps not on the same league as A Song of Ice and Fire by George R. R. Martin and The Lord of The Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien but it remains one of the most loved stories to have been ever written.

Due to the pandering, however, Rowling has become one of the most controversial authors of our times. Some might argue it was unnecessary but as an individual, it is her right to express her political opinions and ultimately, it is she who has to live with the consequences that follow.

Since the publication of the last book of the series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the snowflake community claims almost exclusive ownership of the fanbase since most have either grown out of it naturally or have gained mixed feelings about the saga due to the political stances of the author.

Simultaneously, the snowflake community itself has developed mixed feelings regarding the book and significant sections of it have virtually cancelled it because J.K. Rowling is apparently a TERF. Nevertheless, it is one of the most popular books that are spotted at snowflake and Leftist protests.

Harry Potter And The Sorcerer’s Stone

It all started in 1997. J.K. Rowling wrote Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone about a young boy who learns that his parents were wizards, and he is invited to study at the wizarding school of Hogwarts, the same school that trained his parents.

The United States changed the name of the novel to Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone and introduced the world to Harry and his young friends, as well as the amazing world of wizards at the British school. The book won several awards and sat on top of the New York Times bestseller list for most of 1999 and 2000.

It has been twenty years since the first #HarryPotter book ...
The Potters smiled and waved at Harry and he stared hungrily back at them, his hands pressed flat against the glass as though he was hoping to fall right through it and reach them. He had a powerful kind of ache inside him, half joy, half terrible sadness.

Christmas is approaching. Malfoy teases Harry about having to stay at Hogwarts for the holiday, as he does not have parents. Harry, however, is looking forward to spending Christmas away from the Dursleys, especially because Ron is also staying at Hogwarts, as Mr and Mrs Weasley are going to visit Ron’s older brother Charlie in Romania. The day before the holidays, Hermione tears Ron and Harry away from a conversation with Hagrid to look in the library for more information about Nicolas Flamel. The librarian, Madam Pince, catches Harry prowling around the restricted-books section of the library and kicks him out.

Harry Potter And The Cursed Child

While not part of the original seven-book series, Cursed Child and the accompanying stage play have become a generally accepted addition to the Harry Potter canon. This 336-page text picks up where the Deathly Hallows epilogue left off, with Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Malfoy sending their unfortunately named kids off to Hogwarts Harrys son Albus and Malfoys son Scorpius serve as our protagonists this time around. Upon arrival at Hogwarts, the boys are both sorted into Slytherin and forge an unlikely friendship, which naturally causes tension between Albus and Harry over the next few years.

After a fight with his father, Albus overhears Cedric Diggorys father Amos asking Harry to use a more powerful version of a Time Turner to go back in time and rescue his son. When Harry refuses, Albus enlists Scorpius to help him save Cedric, with the aid of Diggorys niece Delphi. However, as anyone whos seen Back to the Future can attest, messing with timelines is never a good idea especially in the wizarding world. Things are further complicated by the fact that Delphi is not who she says she is, and may have sinister ulterior motives when it comes to rewriting history.

Harry Potter And The Half

In Harry’s sixth year at Hogwarts, Lord Voldemort and his Death Eaters are increasing their terror upon the Wizarding and Muggle worlds. Headmaster Albus Dumbledore persuades his old friend Horace Slughorn to return to Hogwarts as a professor as there is a vacancy to fill. There is a more important reason, however, for Slughorn’s return. While in a Potions lesson, Harry takes possession of a strangely annotated school textbook, inscribed ‘This is the property of the Half-Blood Prince’. Draco Malfoy struggles to carry out a mission presented to him by Voldemort. Meanwhile, Dumbledore and Harry secretly work together to discover the method on how to destroy the Dark Lord once and for all.

Its 20 Years Since The First Harry Potter Book Was Published

The first instalment of the Harry Potter franchise inspired a generation and made many of us anxiously wait on our 11th birthday for our Hogwarts letter.

Author J. K. Rowling came up with the idea for her first novel in 1990 as she was flat hunting with her boyfriend in Manchester. She told Urbanette: “I took the train back to London on my own and the idea for Harry Potter fell into my head… A scrawny, little, black-haired, bespectacled boy became more and more of a wizard to me.

“I began to write Philosopher’s Stone that very evening. Although, the first couple of pages look nothing like the finished product.”

But the seven years between that moment and the eventual publishing of the novel was rough. In that short space of time, she relied on state benefits, saw the death of her mum, gave birth to her first child and got divorced.

Interestingly, her real name is Joanne Rowling. She adopted the name J. K. Rowling because the then editorial director of Bloomsbury Children’s Books,Barry Cunningham, believed that the book was targeted towards males, and theypreferred novels written by male authors. The first British books printed hadher full name in small print in the copyright section – but it was completelyremoved from the US books.

Harry discovers that not only is he a wizard, but he is a famous one. He meets two best friends, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, and makes his first enemy, Draco Malfoy. At Hogwarts the three friends are all placed into the Gryffindor house. Harry has a knack for the school sport, Quidditch, and is recruited onto the Gryffindor team as its star Seeker.

Perusing the restricted section in the library, Harry discovers that the Sorcerer’s Stone produces the Elixir of Life, which gives its drinker the gift of immortality. After realizing that Voldemort might be after the stone, Albus Dumbledore had it moved it to Hogwarts for safekeeping.

Pandering To The Left

One of the things that left a bitter taste in the mouth of many fans is the incessant pandering to leftist political objectives by J.K. Rowling herself. In her attempt to garner greater social acceptability, she, intentionally, twisted essential parts of the story and intrinsic features of her characters to cater to political demands by snowflakes.

For instance, out of the blue, she one day Albus Dumbledore was homosexual and had romantic feelings for dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald. There was no rhyme or reason in the declaration, and there was nothing in the books to suggest that Dumbledore is gay.

Even more so, it is not clear how his sexual orientation is relevant to the story. It is not, that is precisely why the story does not discuss his sexual orientation. But in an environment where LGBT groups were building pressure for greater representation, the author conveniently declared after the publication of the last book that the greatest wizard of all time was gay.

That wasnt all. J.K. Rowling claimed years later that Hermione Grangers race was not mentioned in the books after a Black actress was cast for the role in a Broadway play. This was despite the fact that there are numerous hints in the books to suggest that Hermione is White and that the movies and the book covers explicitly depict her as a White individual.

The next room, Professor Flitwick’s, holds a bunch of flying keys and some broomsticks. Harry finds a silver one with a broken wing that is different from the others and catches it, unlocking the next door with it. The next room is Professor McGonagall’s, and has a large chessboard, for a game of Wizard’s Chess that Ron helps them win, at the cost of having to sacrifice himself and getting knocked out. Harry and Hermione continue to the next room, Professor Quirrell’s, where they find an unconscious troll laying on the floor. Lastly, they enter Professor Snape’s room and find seven potions in bottles along with a roll of paper giving clues on which one to drink to continue, noting that three bottles have poison, two have nettle wine, one will send the drinker back, and the other will let the drinker move forward into the next room. Hermione tells Harry that it is a test of logic and not magic wherein most wizards fail. She solves the puzzle, and at Harry’s instruction, drinks the one that will allow her to head back through the purple flame, while Harry drinks the one to head into the black flame and into the final room, where he is surprised at whom he sees.
