Over and over again, Harry questions Dumbledore’s trust for Snape, but it was actually because of Harry’s own mother that Dumbledore fully trusted his spy. Dumbledore, a character just as flawed and human as Snape, used his love for Lily to make Snape a ready double agent for the Order of the Phoenix.
Had Harry known why Dumbledore trusted Snape so completely, however, it likely would have made him hate the man even more – at least, until he became fully aware of the professor’s sacrifice.
The Real Reason Harry Potter Named His Son After Severus Snape
While some Harry Potter fans instantly accept the choices made by their favorite charactersand, by extension, those made by author JK Rowlingmany still question major events of the series, including why the adult Harry Potter would name one of his sons after Severus Snape, a professor who made Harry’s life miserable during all his years at Hogwarts.
In a series of tweets, Rowling explained her reasoning. Though Snape was hard on Harry and his friends throughout the series, he was deeply in love with Lily Potter, Harry’s mom. This unrequited love led him to resent James Potter, Harrys father, and eventually Harry, too.
As Rowling sees it, Snape eventually sacrificed himself in order to save Harry at the Battle of Hogwarts, so Harry felt the need to honor him.
Snape died for Harry out of love for Lily. Harry paid him tribute in forgiveness and gratitude.
Dumbledore Used Lily’s Eyes To Manipulate Snape
Every character in the Harry Potter universe is flawed like real people are. Dumbledore is not immune to this, no matter how high and mighty he might seem. In fact, some argue that he’s actually not a very responsible teacher or Headmaster at all.
Dumbledore manipulates Snape after Lily dies, hoping it will convince Snape to protect Harry and support the fight against darkness. Harry, who later realizes that all people make mistakes, names his child after both Severus and Albus, opting to recognize their goodness.

Snape Chose The Dark Arts Over Lily
No matter how much Snape has done for Lily, from protecting her child to sacrificing his life to serve the Order, he still ultimately chose the Dark Arts over the woman he loved. This is a point of division among fans, but the reality is that he’s a complicated and flawed man who reflects true humanity.
However, one can’t deny the fact that he chose darkness in spite of Lily’s warnings. When he’s still young, he follows the path of many Slytherins, becoming a Death Eater and supporting Voldemort, furthering his divide from Lily.
Order Of The Phoenix Members

Snape’s relationships with some members of the Order of the Phoenix have already been established: Lily Evans, the , Albus Dumbledore, Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger and Minerva McGonagall.
Snape was not particularly gracious towards Nymphadora Tonks, probably because she was so close to Remus Lupin. When they met at school in 1996, he maliciously said “I was interested to see your new Patronus. I think you were better off with the old one… the new one looks weak.” Snape did, however, respect Tonks’ abilities as he was her Potions master whilst she was a Hogwarts student and she earned an O in her O.W.L. This is evident as he never let one with a lesser grade take the N.E.W.T which was a requirement to be an auror. Tonks was shocked when Snape killed Dumbledore and never learned that Snape was on their side, as she was killed by Bellatrix Lestrange during the Battle of Hogwarts.
Snape had a mixed relationship with the Weasley family. While he disliked their children, he seemed to be on civil terms with Arthur and Molly. However, when he murdered Dumbledore, the Weasley family obviously turned against him. Snape also accidentally cursed off George’s ear, during the Battle of the Seven Potters, while he was trying to hit another Death Eater. The Weasley family learned that Snape was on their side in 1998, except Fred, who was killed in the Battle of Hogwarts.

Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows
In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Voldemort and his Death Eaters have tightened their grip on the wizarding world. Snape is named Headmaster of Hogwarts, while Death Eaters Alecto and Amycus Carrow are appointed as Hogwarts staff. The novel focuses largely on Harry and his friends and events outside the school therefore Snape plays a limited role at the start. In the course of the book, Harry and his friends find out that a few students attempted to steal the Sword of Godric Gryffindor, and that Snape subsequently sent it to be stored at Gringotts Wizarding Bank however, that sword was only a copy. Later on, Harry and Ron are led to find the real sword by a Patronus taking the form of a doe.
Towards the end of the school year, Professors McGonagall, Flitwick, and Sprout force Snape to flee the school. Voldemort summons Snape to the Shrieking Shack. Erroneously believing Snape is the master of the Elder Wand and that Snape’s death will make him the master of the Wand, Voldemort kills Snape by having his pet snake Nagini bite him through the neck. The dying Snape releases a cloud of memories and tells Harry, who has watched the entire scene from a hidden spot, to take and view them.

Harry Potter And The Cursed Child
When Draco and Astoria Greengrass‘ son Scorpius Malfoy finds himself in an alternate timeline in which Voldemort won the Battle of Hogwarts, killed Harry and his allies and instituted a terrible reign of terror, he desperately searches for help in restoring history to its original course. He finds that in this reality Snape is still alive and still teaches at Hogwarts, and asks for his help. At first Snape is suspicious of him, since this timeline’s version of Scorpius is a bully and a Voldemort stalwart. But when Scorpius shows that he knows of Snape having been in love with Lily, Harry’s mother Snape’s most closely guarded secret Snape becomes convinced that he does indeed come from a different timeline where Harry and his friends won. Snape then reveals that he, together with the fugitive Ron and Hermione Granger, maintain the last remnants of Dumbledore’s Army still waging hopeless resistance against the all-powerful Voldemort. In talking with Scorpius, Snape had learned that Harry would name his son “Albus Severus” and would regard Snape as “probably the bravest man I ever knew” and is deeply moved. Though having guessed that in the other timeline he would die, Snape nevertheless willingly helps Scorpius recreate this timeline and being discovered by Dementors, Snape sacrifices himself in order to cover Scorpius’ escape.

Why Do People Think Snape Was Harrys Father
In the movie, Harry doesnt have features of Snape but they left people confused in the first seasons giving ambiguous information. But after watching the whole movie you will know that James is Harrys father. If you have little information about the movie you will think Snape is the father of Harry.

Although joining the Dark Lord was completely out of the question, Severus could not bring himself to support the Order of the Phoenix either, as it was being led by Albus Dumbledore, a man whom Severus did not trust in the least. It was decided that he would stay neutral move to France until the war was over and Voldemort vanquished.

Snape Only Cradles Lily’s Body In The Movie
Film fans may not know that Snape did not arrive at the Potters’ home in Godric’s Hollow in the book, which means that the scene where he cradles Lily’s body is only included in the film, making Snape appear more sympathetic. However, it also calls into question what he did with Harry, who watched the scene unfold.
He doesn’t raise him or deliver him to the Dursleys, although it’s possible that he helped in some other way. While the scene focuses on his guilt and regret, it also uses Lily’s death to further develop his character. It adds a level of affection that book Snape doesn’t seem capable of.

Snape Never Insulted Harry About His Mother Only His Father
As Harry’s professor, Snape takes merciless enjoyment in tormenting the Boy Who Lived, mocking everything from his fame to his scar. One of Snape’s favorite jabs to make, which obviously hurt Harry the most, was regarding the arrogance and insufferable nature of Harry’s father, James.
Harry has no way of knowing that his father was a rival of the Potions Master, and even if he had known, it wouldn’t have made it any more bearable on a young boy who barely even knew his parents. Snape never insulted Lily in front of Harry, which was a huge clue to foreshadow why he bothered to ever help the boy in the first place.
Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets
Snape has a minor role in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, where he helps Gilderoy Lockhart oversee Hogwarts’ short-lived Duelling Club, but he has little interaction with the main plot. It is while attending the Duelling Club that Harry learns the Expelliarmus spell, which plays a significant role in later books, by seeing Snape use it.

Why Did Snape Leave The Sword In A Lake
Once Snape knew where Harry was camping, he needed to create the conditions of need and valor for the sword to be retrieved. He uses his Patronus to lure Harry and leaves the sword at the bottom of a frozen lake. The Horcrux which Harry has so very diligently not removed, senses its end and constricts his windpipe.
Snape Wouldn’t Take No For An Answer
Not only did Snape ignore that Lily didn’t return his feelings and resent her choice after he was emotionally abusive to her, but he also blamed James for his own behavior. This lack of personal responsibility is an unfortunate cliché and may be why Lily didn’t reciprocate his feelings.

Had Snape not eavesdropped and reported to Voldemort about the prophecy regarding the Potters, Voldemort would never have gone after them and used the Unforgivable Curse on all three members of the Potter family. While Snape obviously regretted it and begged Voldemort to spare Lily, he still spied and passed on the prophecy to begin with. Snape’s loyalty to the Dark Arts ultimately won over his loyalty to the woman he loved, and he spent the rest of his life trying to make up for it.
Lily Married Her Best Friend’s Bully
When Harry discovers that James was as arrogant and mean as Snape claims, it’s a little startling, to say the least. Hogwarts is, after all, a high school, but after only seeing James as a seemingly responsible adult, it’s jarring to see him as a silly teenager.
Perhaps Lily eventually knocked some sense into her future husband, it doesn’t change the fact that she married the person who bullied her best friend. It also seems that Snape never let go of his bitterness about high school.

Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire
Snape’s role in the fourth novel, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, is not substantially different from that of the previous three books. He is apoplectic when Harry is unexpectedly entered into the Triwizard Tournament. Later Harry accidentally falls into Dumbledore’s Pensieve and views memories of several Death Eater trials from years before. At one point, Snape is named as a Death Eater by Igor Karkaroff, but Dumbledore comes to Snape’s defence, claiming that although Snape had indeed been a Death Eater, he changed sides before Voldemort’s downfall and turned spy against him. Later, Dumbledore assures Harry that Snape’s reformation is genuine, though he refuses to tell Harry how he knows this, saying the information “is a matter between Professor Snape and myself”.
At the end of the book, Dumbledore attempts to convince a disbelieving Minister for Magic, Cornelius Fudge, that Voldemort has returned. As proof, Snape willingly shows Fudge the restored Dark Mark on his arm. He is subsequently sent on a secret mission by Dumbledore. This mission, as had been implied in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and revealed in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, was to rejoin the Death Eaters and spy on Voldemort as a re-doubled agent, while pretending to spy on Dumbledore on behalf of Voldemort.
