Deathly Hallows Part 2‘s best chance for a game-changing win arguably was in Art Direction, a category where the film had had success at the guild-awards level. But in the end it was swept aside in Hugo‘s sweep of the tech awards, losing there and also in Visual Effects. It likewise went down to defeat in Best Makeup, losing to The Iron Lady.
Elswhere, Billy Crystal and the telecast made only passing reference to the film, the past year’s biggest box-office hit. No stars from the series served as presenters.
And now, as far as the Oscars are concerned, it really all does end here for Potter.
Unless, that is, one of author J.K. Rowling‘s planned adult novels casts her signature hero in something more relevant to Oscar voters.

A moving costume drama thats also very much a David Lynch film, it mixes striking black-and-white photography with a compassion for outsiders of all kinds.

Why Harry Potter Failed At The Oscars
Critically and commercially beloved, Harry Potter’s failure to win the big ones is a bit of an oddity.
hen you think about the movies that define generations, a few specific ones usually pop into mind. In the thirties, people flocked to see Technicolor extravaganzas like Wizard of Oz and Gone With the Wind, turning them into box office smashes . For baby boomers and Gen X, Star Wars showed them the possibilities that cinema had to offer. Millions of millennials grew up with Harry Potter, flocking to see it in droves and turning it into the third-highest grossing film franchise in history. You would assume that films as successful and groundbreaking as these would have heaps of awards to go with their piles of money, and in most cases you would be right, with one notable exception.
While massively successful commercially, the Harry Potter movies never managed to translate their box office magic into awards gold. In total, the films received 12 Oscar nominations entirely in below-the-line categories and won zero awards. Chamber of Secrets and Order of the Phoenix didnt even manage a single nomination. So far, the only Wizarding World film to win an Oscar is 2016s Fantastic Beasts, for Colleen Atwoods exceptional costume design .

During the Academy Awards ceremony, famed Hollywood costume designer Colleen Atwood got a surprise. It wasnt that shed won an Oscarshed done that before, three timesit was that she got one for the Boy Who Lived. Throughout eight movies and despite 12 nominations, the Harry Potter films were always the Susan Lucci of the Oscars. Then, last night, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them won, and Atwood was shocked.
It was surprising, she noted backstage, because the Potter movies have always had a fairly strong stylehow could they not have picked up some technical achievement hardware? It was probably because, Atwood continued, this movie is set in the 1920s, which kind of keys a different visual sense.
The only thing that was able to set the Potter movies, once considered the most-snubbed franchise of all time, was moving the series back a few decades, to a time that needed fancier clothes than Harrys robes and jackets.
Shes right. In previous years, a great majority of costume design Oscars have gone to period pieces . Even two of Atwoods three previous winsMemoirs of a Geisha and Chicagowere historical in nature. If you want to win a costume design Oscar, you gotta go old-school and because Beasts is a prequel, it could do things and go places the Potter gang couldnt.
Best Loser: The Sixth Sense
1999 was a wild year at the movies, yielding one singular film after another, from Three Kings to Fight Club to Magnolia to Being John Malkovich to The Blair Witch Project to The Matrix. Some of these confirmed emerging directors like Spike Jonze and David O. Russell as major talents. Others, like The Matrix, broke new ground with stunning special effects. The years Best Picture nominees, however, barely reflected any of this. American Beauty wasnt exactly a safe choice for the winner, but it was hardly the most inventive offering of the year. Nor were The Cider House Rules or The Green Mile, or even The Insider, a fantastic Michael Mann movie, but one from an established director challenging himself to bring the same sort of tension to a docudrama that he had previously brought to crime films. Of the nominees, The Sixth Sense provided the best indication of what was happening elsewhere in the film world. A seemingly out-of-nowhere supernatural drama crafted with discipline by M. Night Shyamalan, a filmmaker most moviegoers had never heard of, it became a cultural phenomenon by taking viewers by surprise but the twist never would have worked without the patience Shyamalan invested in the filmmaking or the careful performances by Bruce Willis and Haley Joel Osment.

Best Loser: The Big House
The prison drama The Big House performs a similar sleight of hand, setting up a new prisoner sent up on a manslaughter charge after a drunk-driving incident as the hero, but focusing instead on a pair of hardened criminals who turn out to be not as irredeemable as they first appear. A highly influential film that set the pattern for prison movies to come, its a gripping piece of filmmaking, filled with images of how prisons dehumanize those within its bars, that builds to a violent climax that still looks pretty shocking.
Winner: Green Bookbest Loser: Roma
Sometimes you just know a Best Picture winner is going to turn into a Wait, what? As in: Wait, what? Dances with Wolves beat Goodfellas? And so forth. Sometimes it just takes seconds for that feeling to kick in. With Green Book, that feeling kicked in almost immediately. Wait, what? Green Book beat BlacKkKlansman / Black Panther / A Star is Born / The Favourite? And, more than anything, it applies to Alfonso Cuaróns deeply personal tribute to not just the times and place that made him but also the live-in maid who helped raise him . Its a journey through the past not through Cuaróns eyes but through hers, a one-of-a-kind movie shot in gorgeous black and white that acknowledges the pasts hold on the present and refuses to confine whats come before nostalgia and misty memories. And its that quality that sets it apart Green Book, too, a film too content to think of the past and its divisions as settled business rather than part of an ongoing story. Roma movingly acknowledged that the act of remembering can be as painful as it is revelatory.

The Godfather Part Ii
1975: Nino Rota was originally nominated for the Original Dramatic Score Oscar for the first Godfather movie in 1972, until it emerged that Rota had used portions of another earlier score. So he made double sure when the second film came around, heading off Jerry Goldsmith’s score for Chinatown and John Williams’ music for The Towering Inferno.
Best Loser: Born On The Fourth Of July
Oliver Stone would discover there was no cinematic flourish or excessive gesture he didnt like in the 1990s, but with Born on the Fourth of July, he made one of the best films of 1989, a late entry in a cycle of 80s movies reckoning with the legacy of the Vietnam War. Its territory hed previously explored with the semi-autobiographical Platoon, but here he uses the experiences of Ron Kovic, a Marine turned antiwar activist who became one of the most prominent voices for veterans after returning home and adjusting to life as a paraplegic. Tom Cruise plays Kovic memorably in a performance that tears down all his movie-star charm, requiring him to be vulnerable onscreen in a way hed never been before and has rarely been since.
