J.K. Rowling apologizes for another

While Harry Potter is typically thought of as a children’s series, there were many emotional deaths & dark moments, so we decided to rank them all!

J.K. Rowling has blessed us with a magical set of characters in Harry Potter that we have grown to love and cherish dearly over time. We feel as though we have grown up with these characters which made it all the more difficult when they were taken away from us. Most of the people at Hogwarts serve as a tremendous influence in our daily lives and despite the fact that these characters are fictional, it doesn’t make the impact they have on our lives any less real.

When these beloved characters in the Potter world were killed off, it messed a lot of us up, yet as Sirius points out in Prisoner of Azkaban, the ones that love us never really leave us and you can always find them if you look inside your heart.

The fact that Harry Potter does feature so many deaths is a bit surprising, but it does lend to its popularity. While it might be a grim way to look at things, the fact is that without the deaths there are no stakes, and the movies made sure that fans were emotionally invested by killing certain characters off.

It obviously led to some massively emotional scenes, but that only further proved the point as to how important the characters were to people. So without further ado, let’s take a look at the most difficult deaths in Harry Potter, Ranked.

Harry Potter 7 part 2 Voldemort “Come to Die” Deathly Hallows movie clip 2011

Harry Potter is a young wizard, born on July 31, 1980, as the only son of James and Lily Potter. He is a Half-Blood, as his maternal family is of Muggle heritage. When he was a boy, a prophecy named him as the only person able to take down and kill Lord Voldemort during the First Wizarding War.

After finding that out, Lord Voldemort went to Godrics Hollow with the intent to kill Harry while he was still a child. He killed his parents, but the protection his mother gave Harry spared the childs life, as Voldemorts Killing Cure backfired and seemingly killed him, leaving the child with a thunder-shaped scar on his forehead.

The books follow Harrys education in Hogwarts and his growth, as he prepares for the final confrontation with the now-resurrected Lord Voldemort, who was never actually dead thanks to the Horcruxes he created.

After finishing his education, Harry Potter married Ginny Weasley, the younger sister of his best friend, Ron Weasley. In continuity, he currently works as the Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement with the Ministry of Magic, after previously having headed the Auror Office he is also a guest lecturer of Defence Against the Dark Arts in Hogwarts.

Who Dies In The First Book Harry Potter And The Philosophers Stone

Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone, also called Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone is the first book in the Harry Potter series.

In this book, young Harry discovers he is a wizard. He joins the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, makes close friends and few enemies there.

He, with the help of his friends, avoids attempt of a comeback by the evil wizard Voldemort who had killed Harrys parents and already once tried to kill Harry when he was a couple of years old.

Quirinus Quirrell, a wizard and Professor of Defence Against the Dark Arts who had joined in allegiance with evil Lord Voldemort has died in this book. It is unclear if he was killed by Harry Potter or Lord Voldemort who possessed his body. The cause of death was either burns from his assault on Harry Potter and Harrys counterattack or Lord Voldemorts departure from his body. When Harry Potter passes out, Quirrell is very badly hurt, but he is not yet dead, and Harry does not see him die. Dumbledore later tells him that Voldemort has left Quirinus to die.

    Honorable Mention: Lavender Brown

Lavender’s situation is left with a bit of uncertainty, as she may have technically been alive when Harry last saw her, though her situation looked grim. She was last scene being attacked by werewolf Fenrir Greyback. Harry noted that her body was “feebly stirring” after Hermione fought Fenrir off. However, she presumably died of her injuries. Though she was never a major character in the series, her death was likely devastating to her best friend, fellow Gryffindor, Parvati Patil.

In previous years, J.K. Rowling has offered up an apology for one major Harry Potter character in observance of the Battle of Hogwarts. However, this year, the author opted to forgo the tradition and instead, in recognition of the COVID-19 pandemic, announce a sizable donation to two charities:

During the battle between Harry Potter and the Basilisk, Harrys ally was able to blind the Basilisk temporarily. At this moment Harry stabbed Basilisk in the roof of the mouth with Godric Gryffindors Sword.

    SPOILER ALERT!!!!!

This page contains a serious spoiler with regard to Book 7. Please do not read it if you dont want to know important plot elements.

I am angry beyond measure at how J. K. Rowling dispatched Hedwig in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Id expected her to kill off Harrys owl in this book, because I thought that Harry was destined to end up with Fawkes, Dumbledores phoenix. So Im not all that upset that Hedwig died. But Im furious that JKR killed off this majestic owl by having the Death Eaters shoot her down while she was caged.

It was bad enough that throughout the series Harry too often kept the owl in a cage that was far too small for anything but a mere travel conveyance. Yeah, yeah this was mainly at the Dursleys, and Harry did act apologetic about caging her. But the movies made having an owl in a cage look pretty darned appealing leastwise, thats what I hear from lots of children and adults who wish they could also have an owl for a pet. To make a noble and worthy character die in such a pathetic, meaningless way was just plain wrong, and the way she did it, it sure looked to me like Rowling saw owls as nothing more than wizardy toys that would enhance the magical feeling of the book, not living beings with value and worthiness in and of themselves. Hedwig was a wonderful creation and deserved better.

    Online Leaks And Early Delivery

In the week before its release, a number of texts purporting to be genuine leaks appeared in various forms. On 16 July, a set of photographs representing all 759 pages of the US edition was leaked and was fully transcribed prior to the official release date. The photographs later appeared on websites and peer-to-peer networks, leading Scholastic to seek a subpoena in order to identify one source. This represented the most serious security breach in the Harry Potter series’ history. Rowling and her lawyer confirmed that there were genuine online leaks. Reviews published in both The Baltimore Sun and The New York Times on 18 July 2007, corroborated many of the plot elements from this leak, and about one day prior to release, The New York Times confirmed that the main circulating leak was real.

    Flashback To October 1981

Towards the end of the Second Wizarding War in 1980, seer Sybill Trewlaney and Albus Dumbledore met at the Hogs Head for an interview. Trewlaney applied for the position of the Divination professor at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, but Dumbledore was disappointed by the interview and was about to reject her application. However, as he was about to leave, Trewlaney entered a trance and provided him with a real prophecy:

The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord approaches born to those who have thrice defied him, born as the seventh month dies and the Dark Lord will mark him as his equal, but he will have power the Dark Lord knows not and either must die at the hand of the other for neither can live while the other survives

She predicted that a boy that had the power to defeat Voldemort was born towards the end of July 1980 to parents who have defied Voldemort in three occasions. This boy would have a power Voldemort could not understand or ever have for himself. And if more than one person fulfilled these requirements, Voldemorts decision on who it was would ultimately determine who this Chosen One is. Voldemort chose Harry because both of them were half-blood while Neville was a pureblood.
