What Is The Room Of Requirement In Harry Potter

Harry Uses It To Hide The Half

LEGO Harry Potter Hogwarts Room of Requirement review! 2020 set 75966!

Book: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

What They Use It For: When Harry needs to find a place to hide the Half-Blood Prince’s Potions textbook, he chooses the Room of Requirement, which has transformed into a cathedral-like room with high windows, “a city with towering walls,” full of illicit objects other Hogwarts students have hidden over the years.

Dumbledore’s Army Uses The Room As A Meeting Place

Book: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

What They Use It For: When Harry forms Dumbledore’s Army and the secret club needs a place to meet, Dobby tells him about the Room of Requirement. Harry finds the room ready for teaching, complete with bookcases , a whistle, and cushions for protection while practicing spells.

Where Is The Come And Go Room In Harry Potter

It is called the Come and Go Room by the house-elves of Hogwarts. The Room is located on the seventh floor, opposite a tapestry showing Barnabas the Barmy trying to teach trolls to dance the ballet. To make the Room appear, a person has to walk past the section of blank wall three times concentrating hard on what is needed.

Harry Found A Horcrux In There Without Realising

Tom Riddle arrogantly believed he was the only person to have worked the room out, and decided upon it as an excellent place to stow the Horcrux he made of Rowena Ravenclaws lost diadem. Oddly enough, Harry came across this very diadem a year before he knew it was a Horcrux, while hiding his copy of Advanced Potion-Making from Snape in Half-Blood Prince incredibly close by. Harry only realised during the Battle of Hogwarts. He probably wouldve kicked himself if he hadnt been a bit busy.

His breath was loud in his ears, and then his very soul seemed to shiver: there it was, right ahead, the blistered old cupboard in which he had hidden his old Potions book, and on top of it, the pock-marked stone warlock wearing a dusty, old wig and what looked like an ancient, discoloured tiara. It Doesn’t Offer Everything That Is Required

Cursed Blood

Draco Malfoy continues to visit the Room of Requirement as he tries to fix the vanishing cabinet in Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince. And it’s clear that this repair is taking a lot of time and effort.

But, why doesn’t the room provide the guidance or material he requires to fix it then? The room seems to be much more fickle than its name originally implies.

Hidden Details You Missed In The Room Of Requirement In Harry Potter

If Harry Potter fans had the chance to visit only one room in Hogwarts, the Room of Requirement would probably be high on their wish lists.

Also known as the Come and Go Room, as Hermione informs everyone, the room made its first appearance on screen in The Order of the Phoenix. It was unwittingly discovered by Neville when he needed a place for Dumbledore’s Army to brush up on their Defense Against the Dark Arts skills. As Hermione explains, “The Room of Requirement only appears when a person has real need of it, and is always equipped for the seeker’s needs.”

The Room plays a major part later in the story. In The Half-Blood Prince, Harry hides the potentially dangerous potion book in the room, and he and Ginny also kiss there for the first time. Draco uses it to smuggle in Death Eaters via the Vanishing Cabinet, and in the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, it’s used as a shelter and secret passage by the DA before becoming the site of a hunt for a Horcrux and a fiery showdown.

Harry Potter And The Half

In , Harry uses the Room of Requirement to hide the Half-Blood Prince’s potion book, which he had secretly been using to excel in his Potions classes. It is later discovered that had been using the room all year long to learn how to bring into Hogwarts castle from a Vanishing Cabinet. When the room transforms into the room filled with numerous items such as the Vanishing Cabinet, it is referred to as the “Room of Hidden Things.”

The Room May Be Unplottable

2020 LEGO Harry Potter Room of Requirement 75966 Review!

This isn’t something that has been canonically confirmed so much as something that can be inferred based on the facts presented in canon, but it would seem that the room of requirement is unplottable. Being unplottable essentially means that the location can’t be traced, it has both been magically hidden from sight and enchanted so it can’t be put on any map. Obviously the room of requirement fulfills the hidden from sight qualification, but Harry also notices that the room of requirement never appears on the Marauder’s Map, causing Hermione to speculate that the room of requirement is likely unplottable.

The Room May No Longer Exist

Once Harry had retrieved the diadem Horcrux, the room was overrun by Fiendfyre started by Malfoys crony Vincent Crabbe. The flames killed the foolish Crabbe, but Ron suspected the Fiendfyre was so powerful, it might have damaged forever the room that wizards need most.

Wheres Ginny? he said sharply. She was here. She was supposed to be going back into the Room of Requirement.Blimey, dyou reckon itll still work after that fire? asked Ron. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

The Chamber Of Secrets

There is no room in Hogwarts that is as eerie as the Chamber of Secrets. Created in the middle ages by one of the school’s founding fathers, Salazar Slytherin , its purpose was to someday be discovered by the heir of Slytherin who would release a monster that would purge the school of any muggle-borns.

We can say that the movie did a great job of making this room every bit as creepy and grand as it was described in the book, with the blood-curdling Basilisk residing in the mouth of Salazar Slytherin’s statue.

Room Of Requirement Training Dumbledores Army

In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, when Harry is in need for a place to train Dumbledores Army hidden from professor Umbridges watchful eyes, Dobby tells him about this room describing it as:

A room that a person can only enter when they have real need of it. Sometimes it is there and sometimes it is not, but when it appears, it is always equipped for the seekers needs.

The 2007 Hogwarts castle shows the room in this form.

After a meeting of Dumbledores Army, just before Christmas, Harry and Cho Chang ends up under a mistletoe and the two shared a kiss.

Set 5378 also includes a vanishing cabinet .

Can The Room Of Requirement Be Two Things At Once

Image

Throughout the Harry Potter story, we’ve seen the Room of Requirement be a number of different things. It can be a place for Dumbledore’s Army to practice, or an extremely huge closet filled with uncountable items , and more.

But can it be two different things at the same time? For instance, could Harry and Dumbledore’s Army be using it for practice and, while they’re practicing, could Snape use it as the huge closet so he could slip in and hide something? And if it’s being two or more things at once, to different people, would they have any way of knowing that while they’re in it, someone else is in another “version” of the Room of Requirement?

Nope. In the sixth book, prof Trelawney tries entering while Malfoy is already inside.

Later on, she says

Everything went pitch black and the next thing I knew, I was being hurled headfirst out of the Room!’

So basically, she tried entering the room when Malfoy was already in it, and thus entered the same room that Malfoy was in.

Another scenario is in the Deathly hallows, where Harry needs to empty the room to search for the diadem:

He knew that the room would not be able to transform while there were still users inside it. …. Ginny, said Harry, Im sorry, but we need you to leave too. Just for a bit. Then you can come back in. Ginny looked simply delighted to leave her sanctuary. And then you can come back in! he shouted after her as she ran up the steps after Tonks. Youve got to come back in!

Class Sizes And Durationedit

Hogwarts classes are held in different locations within the castle and grounds. Class usually last for one and a half hours, even if they are shared by two Houses. Higher years often have “double” classes, which means they last three hours Potions classes quite often are double, because potion preparation can take longer than a single class would have time for. There are three class periods, typically, in the morning, and three in the afternoon.

Class size is typically thirty students, according to . This gives a total student population of about 840, or 210 in each House.

Teachers Don’t Know About It

Dumbledore alludes to knowing about it, mentioning that he found an incredible lavatory once when he desperately needed it, but the idea that he and the rest of the staff would be unaware of the room’s existence is hard to swallow.

They didn’t know about the Chamber of Secrets, but only one student in hundreds of years had ever had access, that is not true of the Room of Requirement .

The Set Designers Turned The Room Of Requirement Into A Shelter For The Da

The first time we see the Room of Requirement in The Deathly Hallows: Part 2 comes when it’s being used by the DA as a shelter from the Death Eaters, who have taken over Hogwarts.

Stuart Craig was the production designer on all of the Harry Potter movies, and more recently worked on the Fantastic Beasts series. Speaking about the Room of Requirement shelter set, he told Entertainment Weekly that he was inspired by bomb shelters, which can still be found in London, “as it’s this temporary respite while a lot of bad things are going on outside.”

Harry, Ron and Hermione’s visit to the DA’s shelter is pretty dramatic, so you could be forgiven for not noticing too many details about the set on screen, yet another reason why this should be one the most paused moments in Harry Potter movies. Accounts from people who were lucky enough to see it in person tell us what to look out for.

In 2011, a writer for fan blog The Leaky Cauldron who got to visit many of the sets wrote that the Room of Requirement was their favorite. “This set goes beyond just being cluttered or lived in it breathes resistance movement shelter,” they added. Look out for, “inkwells, blankets, pillows, dirty clothes, towels, cups, old issues of The Quibbler, shaving kits … strewn strategically around the set.”

Everybody Coming Out Of The Tunnel

The Deathly Hallows: Part 2 shows there’s a way into the Room of Requirement from The Hog’s Head in Hogsmeade. The passageway is used by Harry, Ron, and Hermione as they attempt to locate Rowena Ravenclaw’s lost diadem inside Hogwarts. Later on, the Order of the Phoenix then turns up to support the trio as they make their last stand against Voldemort.

In the Deathly Hallows book, however, just about everybody enters the Room through this passageway. Abertforth is unhappy about this but the majority of the good guys within the wizarding world make the journey to provide Harry with the support he needs. While their heroic entrance into the Great Hall in the final movie was brilliant, this would have been a better way for the Order to enter the fray.

Crabbe And Goyle’s Humiliating Mission

Draco knows he can’t spend hours in the room without being interrupted and, therefore, decides to take action. He tells close friends Vincent Crabbe and Gregory Goyle to keep an eye out, just in case. And, amusingly, this involves the pair having to use Polyjuice Potion to transform themselves to avoid suspicion.

At one point, one of the pair transforms into a female first-year student. They drop some scales they are carrying in when Harry is nearby and it isn’t until the end of the year that Harry can work things out. Crabbe and Goyle were probably unhappy about having to do the dirty work for Draco but, as ever, they did whatever they were told.

Defense Against The Dark Arts Classroom

Hidden Details You Missed In The Room Of Requirement In ...

Of all the classrooms in Hogwarts, this one sticks out as the most significant. In fact, the very position of the Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher at Hogwarts held special meaning throughout the series, being occupied by a different character and used as an important plot element in every book.

This is, of course, because this teaching position was cursed by none other than young Tom Riddle, after being himself rejected for the position by then headmaster Dippet. The room is so significant that it has made an appearance even outside the Harry Potter movies, in Fantastic Beasts and the Crimes of Grindelwald, showcasing young Albus Dumbledore teaching the subject himself. As for the classroom, we all know full well what it looks like: a wide-open space supported by wooden arcs, large windows, and a beautiful stone staircase behind the teacher’s desk that leads to his personal office.

The Room Played A Vital Role In Dracos Task From Lord Voldemort

Draco spent most of his sixth year in the Room as part of a plan concocted on Voldemorts orders to murder Dumbledore, as we all too tragically know.

Using the Vanishing Cabinet, which languished in there for some years before Malfoy discovered it, he created a path between one cabinet and its twin that dwelled in Borgin and Burkes to give Death Eaters unfettered access to Hogwarts.

Dracos discovery of the room began the domino effect that would eventually lead to Death Eaters storming the castle and the Headmaster meeting his maker.

Harry Potter: 10 Room Of Requirement Scenes The Movies Didn’t Show

Although the Room of the Requirement featured the most in Order of the Phoenix, the room ended up having a bigger role in the novels.

In Harry Potter, Hogwarts is the home to many wonderful settings. There’s the Great Hall, the Forbidden Forest, and Albus Dumbledore’s office, for starters. But the Room of Requirement may just be the most magical of the lot. First introduced in the Order of the Phoenix book and movie, it’s a room that does pretty much anything.

Students use it to practice illegal Defence Against the Dark Arts lessons, hide things they shouldn’t, and even use it as a toilet if they sorely needed of one. Obviously, the movies did a stellar job at bringing the location to the big screen. However, that’s not to say there were able to include every scene or reference to the Room of Requirement. These moments just missed out.

Later that same year, during the Battle of Hogwarts, it was used as an evacuation route to move the students away from the dangers that followed. Later, Harry realised that Rowena Ravenclaw’s Diadem, one of Voldemort’s Horcruxes, was hidden in the Room of Requirement, as he has seen it in his sixth year while hiding his Potions book and had even picked it up without realising what it was.

As noted above, as long as the room was being used to maintain the passage to Hogwarts, the Room of Hidden Things couldn’t be accessed. Harry, Hermione, and Ron cleared the room and accessed the Room of Hidden Things, where they were ambushed by Draco Malfoy, Vincent Crabbe and Gregory Goyle. Crabbe let loose cursed fire that destroyed the Horcrux and many other objects, killing himself in the process. The entire room was turned into a sea of flames, and Ron wondered if the Room of Hidden Things could be accessed again due to the possibility of it being destroyed.
