In 1999, the novelist N.K. Stouffer alledged that she has coined the term muggle in her 1984 book, The Legend of Rah and the Muggles. Furthermore, she had published some activity books about characters named Larry and Lily Potter. However, Rowling fought back against the allegations in court, and won handsomely when, according to wikipedia, the “court found in Rowling’s favour, granting summary judgment and holding that ‘no reasonable juror could find a likelihood of confusion as to the source of the two parties’ works’. During the course of the trial, it was held that Rowling proved ‘by clear and convincing evidence, that Stouffer has perpetrated a fraud on the Court through her submission of fraudulent documents as well as through her untruthful testimony’, including changing pages years after the fact to retroactively insert the word “muggle”. Her case was dismissed with prejudice and she was fined $50,000 for her ‘pattern of intentional bad faith conduct’ in relation to her employment of fraudulent submissions, along with being ordered to pay a portion of the plaintiffs’ legal fees.” Ouch!
Does The Legend of Rah and the Muggles merit a place in anyone’s Harry Potter collection? Well, that’s up to the individual. But, for what it’s worth, I did once own a copy, but kept it only until I’d read it and realised just how bad it was.

How Can You Tell If A Harry Potter Book Is Rare
You can spot this ultra-rare version, rather than a later one, by looking at page 53 where « 1 wand » appears twice in list of things Harry should bring to Hogwarts. You should also look for a print line that reads 1 0 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 and the crediting of « Joanne Rowling », not JK, on the title page.
Richard Harris Albus Dumbledore
Richard Harris had an incredible career to his name before he was ever cast as the elderly headteacher, being nominated for an Oscar for his performance in This Sporting Life in 1963.
Harris health was declining by the time he took the role of Dumbledore, leading to him being a little hesistant, but he ultimately said yes because his 11-year-old granddaughter threatened to never speak to him again if he didnt.
However, the actor died at the age of 72 in 2002.
Michael Gambon took on the role of Dumbledore from the Prisoner of Azkaban onwards, but Harris portrayal is still looked back on by fans fondly, with some arguing that his softspoken performance is a closer interpretation to the JK Rowlings character in the books.
Director Chris Columbus said at the time: Were all still in an incredible amount of shock. We knew Richard was sick but he was such a fighter that somehow deep down we all expected him to make it and get through it and be in the third Harry Potter film.
So its a complete shock because weve all worked so closely together. Its like losing a member of your family.

As weve already mentioned, signed copies are extremely valuable, but only if its been inked by either the illustrator or the author. Since the 2007 launch of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, every book signed by Rowling at special events included a holographic sticker to authenticate the signature.
The sticker is an integral part of proving the authenticity of a signed edition, so make sure any books signed since then include a holographic sticker. Of course, thats not particularly relevant for the majority of the earlier options, with many being inked during various book signings and events before 07.
As for first editions signed by the cast, theyre not especially valuable when compared to unsigned copies. Its also unlikely that Rowling will respond to any requests to sign a first edition copy either, so were stuck with what weve got.

Harry Potter author JK Rowling has thanked fans saying “it’s been wonderful” on today’s anniversary which marks 20 years since the first book was published.
Harry Potter And The Philosopher’s Stone was first published on June 26 1997 and has since sold more than 450 million copies worldwide in 79 languages.
Rowling wrote on Twitter: “20 years ago today a world that I had lived in alone was suddenly open to others. It’s been wonderful. Thank you.”

The novel is one of 500 first editions of the novel published by Bloomsbury in 1997.
The book, the first in the seven-part series of Harry Potter books, was kept in pristine condition by a private UK collector.

First edition, first printing, first state
The first edition is likewise easy to tell, since both UK and US publishers indicate it with the words First Edition on the copyright page. When you have a first edition, first printing book its commonly referred to as a 1/1 copy. There is one additional consideration to make: the state of the book. A book might have multiple states if a change was made during the first printing. For example, the dust jacket of a book might be changed midway through the first printing. The 1/1 copy with the original dust jacket would be considered the first state. Not every book has multiple states its entirely dependent on whether changes were made mid-run. Finding out whether a particular book is first state often requires a bit of research, though in the case of Harry Potter books that information is relatively easy to find online, and mostly relevant to just the most valuable copies .

Look For The Error On Page 53
It turned out that the original copy of the first Harry Potter novel had an error in Harrys list of items to take to Hogwarts. The list told him to take one wand twice. Well, he certainly only picked up one wand, so this was obviously a misprint. Later copies of the novel corrected the error.
If youre getting a British edition of the book, youll also find FIRST EDITION printed on the book. In the U.S. editions, its all about a string of numbers. In the first editions, youll see:
10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 0/0
Followed by the date that the copy was published. The 0/0 denotes the first edition. This is first edition/first printing.
The date will also give you an idea. The Philosophers Stone was originally printed in 1997. In the U.S. it was called the Sorcerers Stone, so look out for that name for first edition versions. Of course, the later novels will have different dates, based on when they were originally published. The number sequence will still be the same.
You may also see FIRST STATE mentioned, which involves the jacket or dust of the novel.
Harry Potter was originally under the Bloomsbury publisher, and that name will appear in the first editions.

This is a surprise winner in the collectible Harry Potter books stakes.
Not only is it the most expensive Harry Potter book ever , anyone who snapped up one of the collector’s editions was on to a winner.
These cost £50 at the time, but are now selling for anything between £200 and £4,500.
Standard editions of the hardback versions can also make more than £50 in good condition.

The one that started it all, the original Harry Potter book was released in 1997 in the UK.
The main characteristics of a UK 1997 first edition first issue are a print line that reads 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1.
Supposedly, youll find the crediting of Joanne Rowling, instead of JK at the front. However, thats not actually true, and all early printings of the title have the same copyright statement.
You can also take a look at the front cover, as the illustration changes depending on the publisher and the region. *Its worth noting that advanced proof copies are also available, although theyre not as collectible as a bonafide first edition copy. As always, hardcover versions are strongly preferred.
There were just 500 first edition hardcovers produced, while 300 were sent to schools and childrens libraries across the UK. This means that its especially rare if youre able to find a true original.
Because library books receive so much wear and tear there are likely to be fewer than 200 copies in potentially fine collectible condition, and these rarely appear on the market. The other binding was a regular paperback version of which a few thousand copies were produced for sale.
For the highest values, wed look to the hardcover edition, which is the best first edition Harry Potter book overall.
First editions for other languages are also fairly popular and can sell for a decent fee depending on the buyer, and the overall condition.
