A Harry Potter favourite has an unlikely link to Emmerdale.

Matthew Lewis who played Neville Longbottom in the world-famous film series hails from Leeds. While Matthew is known to many, some might not recall his older brother had a four-year stint in Emmerdale.

Anthony Lewis started acting at the age of nine where he bagged a role in A Touch of Frost. As our colleagues at MyLondon report, Anthony got his big break at the age of 16 when he played Marc Reynolds in Emmerdale.

He joined the soap in 1999 with the rest of the Reynolds family – mum and dad Sean and Angie, and younger sister Ollie.

Arguably, his biggest storyline was Marc losing his virginity to Donna Windsor – they were caught out by Viv Windsor.

The entire family was axed from the show four years later when Stephen McGann decided to leave his role as dad Sean, as the producers decided the family wouldnt work without him.

Neville Longbottom Actor Matthew Lewis Says He Finds Watching His ‘harry Potter’ Performance ‘painful’

Matthew Lewis said that he finds his performance as Neville Longbottom in the “Harry Potter” movies “painful” to watch as he sees too much of himself in the awkward Gryffindor student.

In an interview with the New York Times, Lewis was promoting his new PBS series “All Creatures Great and Small,” and told the publication he doesn’t like playing characters similar to himself.

“I find it quite difficult when too much of me starts to come through in a character. It’s easier when I can play someone completely different, like a police officer in London or someone who’s wealthy,” Lewis said, before addressing the character that launched him into the film industry: Neville Longbottom.

“At times it’s painful how much of me there is in Neville. When I’m watching, I’m like, ‘that’s not Neville that’s you.'”

Lewis started out as the lovable but clumsy Neville, but has matured since into something of a hearthrob, culminating in this role as the lead love interest in “All Creatures Great and Small” and best summarized when he was the cover star of Attitude Magazine in 2015.

What Matthew Lewis Has Been Doing Since Harry Potter Ended

After the Harry Potter film franchise wrapped up its run in 2011 with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, its young actors were finally free to take on new projects after spending their adolescence working on the film series. At that point, most of the actors went in different directions. Harry Potter himself, Daniel Radcliffe, had already cut his teeth on the Broadway stage with the dark drama Equus, and ultimately went on to take ambitious film roles in romantic comedies like What If? and bizarre films like Swiss Army Man. Rupert Grint, who played Harry’s loyal and funny sidekick Ron Weasley, worked in films like CBGB before teaming up with M. Night Shyamalan for the Apple TV+ series Servant. Hermione Granger actress Emma Watson continued her blockbuster streak with Perks of Being a Wallflower, the live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast, and the Oscar-nominated Little Women. She’s also worked to promote human rights as a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations.

Beyond the main trio, however, the other former students of Hogwarts are making their way in the world as well. From scoring roles on American TV dramas like How To Get Away with Murder to using their fame to promote vegan lifestyles , these young stars are doing plenty and Matthew Lewis is no exception.

Matthew Lewis Neville Longbottom

In the years leading up to the final installment of the Harry Potter movies, the one character whose appearance changed the most was, without a doubt, Neville Longbottom.

In the Harry Potter universe, Neville was a geeky member of the Gryffindor house who was bullied relentlessly by Draco Malfoy, the Hogwarts school villain. Longbottom was a clumsy, plump goofball who just couldnt get it together. To capture the true character of Neville Longbottom, Matthew Lewis needed to wear a fat suit, shoes that were two sizes too big, and prosthetics placed behind his ears.

Lewis already had crooked teeth, and this characteristic was an important element that added to his awkwardness. His imperfect smile emphasized his geeky, accident-prone character. During filming, Lewis was under a contract that kept him from cosmetic dentistry until after the series was done filming.

But thankfully, Lewis finally got his teeth straightened. After ten years of playing Neville Longbottom, Lewis now gets to show off a killer smile!

Its No Secret That Lewis Transformed Over The Years That He Played Neville Longbottom

Just like everyone, his body began to change when he hit puberty. Who wants to reminisce on that, right?

Being 15 years old in the middle of puberty, having to wear a fat suit. Theres girls around Ive got this fat suit on every day, he said. No one knows Im wearing this damn thing, they all just think Im fat. Now, as an actor, I go, Why did you ever even complain about that? Youre the luckiest man alive.

Though he admits that the compliments he gets now are flattering, he said he doesnt get it. Costar Tom Felton disagreed, saying:

“I do. I’ll show you a picture of what you looked like when you were 12 versus the rippling mass of muscle you are today!”

Well, we cant say hes wrong.

Actor Matthew Lewis has described how he was forced to alter his appearance after losing weight between two Harry Potter films.

Lewis played the role of Harrys put-upon schoolmate Neville Longbottom in the hit fantasy franchise.

Speaking to Metro, Lewis revealed that he had lost a visible amount of weight between the productions of Chamber of Secrets and Prisoner of Azkaban.

It was a slightly longer break than normal because they had shifted from a winter to a summer blockbuster, he said, and when I came back I was much taller than everyone else and, I guess, thinner than I had been.

While the series recast some roles over the course of its eight-film run, Lewis said he was assured by producers that he would be kept on, but they had to do something.

Why Its Hard For Harry Potters Neville Actor To Watch The Movies

ByCorey Chichizola22 January 2021

The Harry Potter franchise has entertained audiences for decades, starting with J.K. Rowling’s original series of novels. The eight-film franchise is also beloved, having launched the careers of a number of young actors. This includes Matthew Lewis, who played the endearingly hapless Neville Longbottom starting with the very first Harry Potter movie. But it turns out that Lewis actually has a hard time watching his old performance from within the Wizading World.

Neville Longbottom is a supporting character throughout the Harry Potter books and novels, and ends up playing an important role in various conflicts. Matthew Lewis played him to pitch perfection, and went viral years later for his physical transformation and handsome adult looks. But Lewis is actually weirded out watching Harry Potter movies because of how much he identifies with his magical character. As he recently put it,

I find it quite difficult when too much of me starts to come through in a character. Its easier when I can play someone completely different, like a police officer in London or someone whos wealthy… At times its painful how much of me there is in Neville. When Im watching, Im like, Thats not Neville thats you.

The Harry Potter franchise will continue with Fantastic Beasts 3, which is filming now and expected to hit theaters in 2022. In the meantime, check out our 2021 release list to plan your next movie experience.

In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix Neville’s magical abilities improve dramatically under the tutelage of Harry during meetings of Dumbledore’s Army, and then devotes himself to Harry’s training regimen. He also receives far greater characterisation than he has in the past, with Harry, and thus the reader, coming to understand him on a deeper level, beginning when Harry’s friends see the state of Neville’s parents at St Mungo’s Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries.

In the climax of the book, Neville participates in the battle in the Department of Mysteries, in which he accidentally breaks the prophecy made about Harry and Voldemort. Dumbledore, to whom the prophecy was originally made, explains that it concerns “the Chosen One”, a wizard that would have the power to vanquish Voldemort. This “Chosen One” would be born “as the seventh month dies”, and thus could refer to either Neville, born July 30, 1980, or Harry, born July 31. According to Rowling, this “does not give Neville either hidden powers or a mysterious destiny … Neville remains the tantalising ‘might-have-been.’ “
