Harry Potter And The Sorcerors Stone

Don't Miss

Human Connection Is Harry’s Greatest Ally

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (2001) Official Trailer – Daniel Radcliffe Movie HD

One important conclusion to be gathered from each of these characters’ heroic moments is that success is only achieved through human connection. Harry would never have bypassed the many chambers guarding the Sorcerer’s Stone if his most trusted friends weren’t right there with him willing to put their own lives on the line to reach the same goal. They share a bond and a level of trust that makes them more than the sum of their parts. After all, these challenges were put in place by Hogwarts teachers, some of Britain’s greatest wizards yet three 11-year-olds manage to surpass them all.

The idea that human connection is Harry’s greatest weapon is revealed by Dumbledore in the film’s final moments, when he reveals that Harry was only able to defeat Quirrell and Voldemort because of the enduring love-magic his mother cast to protect him on the night Voldemort murdered her. Harry did not know it, but the love of his friends and family had always been there to prop him up when his courage and skills alone weren’t enough to do the job. Ultimately, in the franchise’s final installments, Harry learns just how important his mother’s sacrifice was in his battle against Voldemort… and “Sorcerer’s Stone” gives audiences a taste of what’s to come.

The Story Isn’t Just About Harry

Despite what the series’ name might suggest, however, Harry Potter isn’t the only important person in this story. Though he proves himself a hero all by his lonesome, Harry would never reach Voldemort or bypass the challenges which preceded the Dark Wizard if it wasn’t for his friends Hermione and Ron. Of course, as the two other main characters of the “Harry Potter” series, the two stalwart allies put on their own displays of heroism in the film’s final hours.

Of the trio, Hermione is the first to receive an opportunity to be a hero. After the two sneak into the series of chambers meant to guard the Sorcerer’s Stone, they encounter a new kind of trap. The floor of one chamber is no floor at all, but rather a deadly plant known as Devil’s Snare, which strangles struggling victims. Ever the book-worm, however, Hermione is the only one with the knowledge and courage to relax herself. She and Harry pass through unharmed. Unfortunately, Ron is not so composed, and Hermione has to show her strengths again by recalling a light spell capable of repelling Devil’s Snare.

Harry’s Bravery Foreshadows His Epic Future

Taking “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” at face value, the film’s first two acts are more about discovery and childlike wonder. The once-abused Harry is swept from his life of neglect and mistreatment at the hands of his aunt and uncle, to one where the impossible is possible. In the magical world, Harry is a wealthy celebrity, a talented athlete, and a gifted wizard with a bright future. Up until the film’s climax, where Harry confronts Voldemort, Harry is living out every child’s fantasy.

What makes Harry a hero, however, isn’t any of his talents. He may seem especially gifted by fate, but that doesn’t mean much when your life’s on the line. Instead, Harry’s heroism derives from his bravery, the defining feature of Gryffindor house. He proves this bravery after he is tempted by Voldemort and still chooses to oppose him, refusing to hand over the Sorcerer’s Stone and even miraculously fighting off Voldemort s host, Professor Quirrell.

Though Harry has been bold from the movie’s beginning, standing up to Draco and sneaking around the school at night, his choice to investigate the Sorcerer’s Stone and oppose Voldemort firmly cements this characterization. This stays consistent for the rest of the series, as Harry continually takes initiative in the fight against Dark Magic even when he doesn’t need to. Unlike other heroes, Harry isn’t necessarily forced into conflicts he runs headlong into them, proving his mettle long after the events of “Sorcerer’s Stone.”

Design And Special Effects

Judianna Makovsky served as the costume designer. She re-designed the Quidditch robes, having initially planned to use those shown on the cover of the American book, but deemed them “a mess.” Instead, she dressed the Quidditch players in “preppie sweaters, 19th-century fencing breeches and arm guards.” Production designer Stuart Craig built the sets at Leavesden Studios, including Hogwarts Great Hall, basing it on many English cathedrals. Although originally asked to use an existing old street to film the Diagon Alley scenes, Craig decided to build his own set, comprising Tudor, Georgian and Queen Anne architecture.

Columbus originally planned to use both animatronics and CGI animation to create the magical creatures, including Fluffy. Nick Dudman, who worked on Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace, was given the task of creating the needed prosthetics, with Jim Henson’s Creature Shop providing creature effects. John Coppinger stated that the magical creatures that needed to be created had to be designed multiple times. The film features nearly 600 special effects shots, involving numerous companies. Industrial Light & Magic created Lord Voldemort‘s face on the back of Quirrell, Rhythm & Hues animated Norbert and Sony Pictures Imageworks produced the Quidditch scenes.

Differences From The Book

Best Buy: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer

Columbus repeatedly checked with Rowling to make sure he was getting minor details correct. Kloves described the film as being “really faithful” to the book. He added dialogue, of which Rowling approved. One of the lines originally included had to be removed after Rowling told him that it would directly contradict an event in the then-unreleased fifth Harry Potter novel Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

The book’s timeline is not enforced in the film. In the book, Harry’s eleventh birthday is in 1991. On the film set for 4 Privet Drive, Dudley’s certificates from primary school bear the year 2001.

Harry Potter: 12 Differences Between The Sorcerers Stone & The Philosophers Stone

In the UK, Harry Potters first story is called The Philosophers Stone but stateside its Sorcerers Stone. What are the differences between the two?

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was published on June 26, 1997, by Bloomsbury in the United Kingdom. Just a year later, the U.S. publishes its own version under the Scholastic Corporation, but this time under the title of Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone. Harry Potter fans are well aware that the title differences had been made for marketing purposes, as publishers felt that “Sorcerer” was more straightforward and would have a greater appeal to US readers. However, the extent of the differences between these two novels is a bit larger than most people realize.

Does Not Do To Dwell On Dreams

It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but just as much to stand up to our friends. The great thing about growing up and eventually watching your own kids start to grow is sharing the magic of reading. I’m a total snob about my books. I rarely venture into YA Fiction or Fantasy, but I still remember introducing my wife, my sisters-in-law, etc., to Harry Potter. We devoured the first three books. And as every subsequent book came out, we were first in line, often reading thorough the night to finish and discuss. Our family has already listened to Jim Dale’s epic read of the Potter series on CD on multiple family car trips. I’m not sure what motivated J.K. Rowling to move from Pottermore to Audible, but as a rabid Potter family and an Audible fanatic, I’m glad she finally did.

What Parents Need To Know

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone – Trailer

Parents need to know that Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone is the first book in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series about an orphan boy who begins his studies at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The novel respects kids’ intelligence and motivates them to tackle its greater length and complexity, play imaginative games, and try to solve its logic puzzles. Book 1 is the lightest in the series, but it still has some scary stuff for sensitive readers: a three-headed dog, an attacking troll, a violent life-size chess board, a hooded figure over a dead and bleeding unicorn, as well as a discussion of how Harry’s parents died years ago and how he was raised by an aunt and uncle who neglected him. Some adult wizards drink, especially Hagrid, who drinks to excess more than once. There’s little diversity at Hogwarts beyond a few students of color, but women have prominent roles at the school, and the smartest kid in class is Hermione, a girl. The 2015 lavishly illustrated, larger-format edition features a new cover and more than 100 full-color illustrations by Jim Kay that depict shimmering ghosts amid breathtaking scenes of Hogwarts, character portraits, and pages from magical textbooks. International Round Up: Harry Potter Puts A Spell On China Crosses $1 Billion Worldwide

The slow march to recovery at the box office continued in international markets at the weekend as theaters opened up and moviegoers continued to return. Progress is being slowed by the lack of new films, particularly from US studios, but catalog titles are filling the void. China took advantage of an opportunity to release a movie from the Harry Potter archive for the first time in the territory, and Australian film fans got a chance to enjoy some original Star Wars. Some local films are also doing well, partly thanks to the lack of competition.

Heres a round-up of whats playing around the world, and how markets are recovering.More…

The Ending Of Harry Potter And The Sorcerer’s Stone Explained

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer

As the first entry in the “Harry Potter” film series, “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,” stands as a piece of film history. What “Star Wars” had done for fantasy in a science-fiction setting, “Harry Potter” achieved for fantasy in a distinctly English setting. It felt bright and new, and captured the inner child of many readers and moviegoers worldwide thanks to the faithfulness of its adaptation, the strength of its core cast, and the quality of its effects. Popular film critic Roger Ebert even hailed it as “a classic” right off of the bat.

There were good reasons for this kind of reception as well. “The Sorcerer’s Stone” serves as a fantastic beginning to what would become an eight movie series full of epic moments of humor, loss, victory, and amazement. It is distinctly a child’s story, allowing the film’s tone to grow with its core characters, who are only 11 at the series’ beginning. However, it hints at the more adult trials that await its principal characters while also establishing the core characteristics that make them worthy heroes even as they mature.

International Round Up: The Eight Hundred Lights Up Chinese Theaters

The international markets were dominated at the weekend by The Eight Hundreds blockbuster release in China. It was expected to do well, but a a seven-day opening weekend of $113.4 million is beyond expectations, given the 50% capacity restrictions in Chinese theaters. It is actually more than Hobbs & Shawearned this time last year, and helped the box office more than triple compared to last week. Granted, Hobbs & Shaw only had four days at the box office and not seven, but this is still a spectacular opening.

Is It Any Good

There are two kinds of magic in this phenomenal boy-wizard tale, the literal spell kind and the spell cast by a thrilling world for young fantasy readers to explore. While Harry Potter and his new friends Ron and Hermione get their first lessons in potion making and how to make a feather fly , readers are getting lessons in delightful ideas like owls delivering the post, secret train platforms, pictures and staircases that move, sports played on broomsticks, and even odd-flavored jelly beans. Readers will want to grab their owl, cat, or toad and hop on the train to Hogwarts immediately.

But it’s not all fun with flying broomsticks. Harry Potter isn’t called the Boy Who Lived for nothing. He’s an orphan because an evil wizard killed his parents and wanted to kill him, and that evil still lurks at the school. As Harry, Ron, and Hermione uncover a plot to steal the Sorcerer’s Stone of the title, more and more school rules must be broken to figure out who the enemy at school really is. Readers will enjoy the twists, danger, and kid wizard heroics that drive the final action.

Harry conspicuously wheels his own luggage rack in Kings Cross Station in order to get to Platform 9 3/4. This rack containing his spellbook and his owl, Hedwig, is called a “cart” in the US Edition of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, while in the UK version, Harry is pushing a “trolley”.

Likewise, the Hogwarts candy cart is called the trolley in the UK version, though, they did choose to keep that verbiage in the US version of the movies as well. This was likely to give more of a British flair to the language, as it’s not a change that would cause confusion.
