Last Christmas I bought a D& D board game, The Legend of Driztt, as a project to see if I could introduce my 10-year-old to gateway fantasy role-playing gaming. The game ended up to be far more popular with my college-aged drinking buddies than with my daughter. Undaunted, I decided to try again, going for lighter fare with the LEGO Harry Potter Hogwarts game. Not only was it a hit with my daughter, I think the gameplay is better than The Legend of Driztt.

When you see Harrys head in the lower left of the screen it saves.the game also told you it autosaves when you selected the save device and when you picked which of the 4 slots you where going to use. It autosaves when you do something important like buy from one of the shops, find a red brick, a gold brick, rescue a student, things like that.

My Thoughts On Lego Harry Potter Hogwarts
I have to admit that I have had kind of a wild ride as it relates to LEGO Harry Potter Hogwarts. When I first saw the game at the rummage sale that I purchased it at I didnt think much of it. I thought it was going to be just another mass market board game made to cash in on Harry Potter and LEGO. As I was a fan of both Harry Potter and LEGO I decided to pick it up anyway as worst case scenario for the price I paid I could just take the LEGO pieces out of the game. I cant say that I had high expectations for the game though. When I got the game out to play though my feelings started to change a little. The game actually has decent ratings, and after reading the rules the premise actually sounded kind of interesting.
The basic premise of the game is that you are a student at Hogwarts who is tasked with going around collecting your homework items from various classrooms. This involves navigating the various moving staircases of Hogwarts. Normally you would think this would turn into a roll and move game as you roll the dice to move between the rooms/staircases. I initially thought you would just use a mechanic like this to pick up all of your homework items and return them to your side of the board.

Should You Buy Lego Harry Potter Hogwarts
As a fan of Harry Potter and LEGO I was curious about LEGO Harry Potter Hogwarts. The game initially looks like your typical mass market game, but when I looked at the instructions the premise looked interesting. The fact that most of the gameplay involved manipulating the gameboard to create a path for your character had a lot of promise. Unfortunately the game never capitalizes on it. The game relies on a lot of luck as what you roll will likely determine how successful you are. The gameboard also feels too small as you dont really even use the board manipulation mechanics much unless you are trying to mess with the other players. This ultimately leads to the game basically becoming another roll and move game which is kind of a boring experience for adults. I think younger kids could really enjoy the game though. The components are also pretty good as long as you are willing to put the time into building the gameboard.
My recommendation for LEGO Harry Potter Hogwarts is complicated. I dont think most adults will enjoy the game so I would recommend that they avoid it. Adults who are big fans of LEGO or Harry Potter though may get some enjoyment out of the game so it may be worth picking up for a good price. For younger children that like Harry Potter though I think they could really enjoy the game and should check it out.

User Info: Wolfe_CH. Each time you collect a red or gold brick, or a round character token inside Hogwarts, the game autosaves. When you exit the game its telling you that you wont save any studs youve collected since the last autosave. Basically its overstating things with its overwrought warning, IMO.

The Build
The Hogwarts Astronomy Tower comes with a whopping 971 pieces, and will cost about 139.99 in Canada . While this appears to be hefty price for just under 1000 pieces which is a lot above our ideal 10 cents per piece price point there are two things to consider here. First, the set is licenced, which comes at an extra cost. Second, the set does come with 8 mini-figures, which is pretty good for a set of this size!
Mini-figures and the number of pieces aside, the Astronomy Tower is a really fun build, from start to finish. As you see the small details come together, and the set come to life before your eyes, I got giddier and giddier as the set began to come together. While my six year old was able to do a bulk of the work as an advanced LEGO builder himself I still feel the 9+ printed on the box is probably quite accurate, especially since there are a number of stickers that need to be applied to various pieces within the set.
The tower is constructed into 4 main pieces the Hogwarts Greenhouse, the potions classroom, the bottom levels of the tower, and the top level of the tower. Each is basically a separate build, broken own by bag numbers. After completing each, youll be shown how to connect it to the rest of the set.

How Does Auto Save Work In Lego Harry Potter
Whenever Harrys lego face pops up it tells me that it is auto saving and when I choose to exit the level, it still tells me that all my progress will be lost despite the auto save. Can someone explain to me how this works? Id be so grateful!. Its becoming a hassle to re play the whole level from the cut scene.

This looks cool from what I have seen at Lego.com. It is of course for kids or a family, and it has one of those neat buildable dice. So many possibilities for buildable dice, they get the kid in you going. The gameplay is simple and the sections of the game can shift around and rotate, so it isnt TOO simple. I cant wait to try the Lego games, and this one in particular.
