Harry Potter Director Chris Columbus Reflects On Original Film’s 20th Anniversary

The Harry Potter book series started enchanting young readers in the late ’90s, making it a beloved series among fantasy fans, though it wasn’t until 2001 that the Wizarding World really took the world of pop culture by storm, thanks to the feature-film adaptation of the debut book. Released in the U.S. as Harry Potter and the Sorceror’s Stone, that first film was directed by Chris Columbus, establishing the tone and mythology of the franchise going forward, as well as enlisting young actors who would bring these characters to life in seven subsequent films over the next decade. Harry Potter and the Sorceror’s Stone celebrates its 20th anniversary on November 16th.

In addition to Sorceror’s Stone becoming an immensely popular film at the time, both critically and financially, it continues to have a legacy and new generations of fans continue to discover it. With the project bringing with it some inherent risks, as does any adaptation of a beloved property, Columbus noted that it’s not a film that he revisits, as he sees too much of his own work on the production and notices the elements he wished he could have improved.

Stay tuned for details on the future of the Harry Potter franchise.

The Witches Of Willow Cove By Josh Roberts

In The Witches of Willow Cove, seventh grader Abby Shepherd and five other girls from a small New England town discover they not only have magical powers, but also share a secret connection to the Salem Witch Trials. Then a mysterious stranger named Miss Winters arrives and offers to teach them everything she knows about witchcraft. Theres only one problem: Abbys best friend suspects Miss Winters is responsible for the disappearance of his mother years beforeand she might have something equally wicked planned for Abby and her new coven.

The first in a magical new series, The Witches of Willow Cove earned starred reviews from Kirkus and School Library Journal and was named a book of the year by A Mighty Girl, which calls it atmospheric, just-spooky-enough, and magical. Tweens ands teens will love this page-turner filled with magic, mayhem, and humor, and the compelling mystery at the heart of the story appeals to adults as well.

We were looking for something new after we finished all the Harry Potter books and I came across this, says one review on Amazon. Its a little bit like Harry Potter meets The Craft. It takes place in modern day United States, so you dont get that British boarding school vibe, but like the Harry Potter books its sort of a mystery disguised as a fantasy, and is also very much a story about friendship. It has a playful sense of humor, but can also put you on the edge of your seat.

Magisterium By Holly Black & Cassandra Clare

This book has gotten a bit of a scolding for being too similar to Harry Potter. Personally, I see similarities – but there are dozens of books that are similar to Harry Potter in some way or another! The Magisterium series is written by two of my very favourite authors and introduces a new world to adore. The school it takes place at is different from Hogwarts but it follows three new friends as they learn how to use magic and how to fight against their ultimate enemy. I love this series and really recommend it – but if you get touchy about something being too like HP, maybe you should avoid it . Its aimed at nine-year-olds, so younger HP fans rejoice!

The Heroes Of Olympus Series By Rick Riordan

What should I read after Harry Potter

Percy Jackson and his friends are back in this sequel series along with great new characters you will quickly fall in love with. The Olympian gods have Roman Personas as well as greek and have Roman half-blood children too. Every time the Greek and Roman half-bloods find out about each other disaster strikes. This is why the gods determined to keep their existence a secret from each other.

However, there is now a threat even greater than the Titans that could spell the end of the world, and Heroes from both camps must come together to fulfill a long-ago prophesy. Of course, Percy finds himself right in the middle of it (though at the beginning of this series he doesn’t even remember who he is. Heh Hem…Thanks, Hera or Juno…Whatever you want to be called.

Will Percy and his fellow Half-Bloods be able to overcome their prejudices and work together to save the world. Each one is vital for the success of the prophecy.

LIke with Percy Jackson and the Olympians, this 5 book series also has action, adventure, young Heroes , proud arrogant gods, mythical monsters, quick-witted humor as well as a love story that not even Tarturus can stand in the way of. Trust me when you start this series you won’t want to put it down until you finish it.

These books are available in Paperback, Hardback, Audiobook, and Kindle formats.

Ghosts have taken over England, but only young people can see and eradicate them in Jonathan Strouds five-book Lockwood and Co. series. Narrated by 15-year-old Lucy Carlyle, these action-packed books have all the humor and heart of the Harry Potter series, and a good deal of the mystery and suspense as well.

Older middle school kids and young adults love Lockwood and Co., as do many adult readers. I had no clue this wasnt an adult series, but I was hooked and didnt care, writes on reviewer on Amazon. And like Harry Potter, this series is no less delightful just because it was written with a younger reader in mind, raves another reader.

In order, the five books of the Lockwood and Co. series are The Screaming Staircase, The Whispering Skull, The Hollow Boy, The Creeping Shadow, and The Empty Grave. Stroud has also written a short story in the Lockwood and Co. series, The Dagger in the Desk, which is available for free on Kindle.

Twelve-year-old Sophie Foster is a telepath who has always assumed her secret is safe. But is it? When she meets Fitz, she realizes shes not alone. Soon Sophie travels to a fantasy world where she can reveal her true identitybut that world is in danger, and only she can save it.

If you liked the Harry Potter books for their immersive world-building and massive page counts, then Shannon Messengers Keeper of the Lost Cities series is for you. Reviewers call these big 400-plus-page books brilliant, fun for tweens and grownups alike, and the best series ever. Indeed, it took a long time to develop a sequel to the 1964 Disney classic Mary Poppins. The 2018 follow-up stars Lin-Manuel Miranda, Emily Mortimer, and Emily Blunt as Mary Poppins. Of her approach to her role, Blunt said in an interview, I think that has been my main focus, is just to approach her calmly, as I would any other character, how I would play her, with what I have given on the page? I have not watched the originals since I saw it as a child, cause I no one is going to outdo Julie Andrews.

Vampire Academy By Richelle Mead

One of the most striking lessons we learned from the Harry Potter series can be summarized in this quote from headmaster Albus Dumbledore: It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities. Another one is the power of friendship.

Both these themes are explored in detail by Richelle Mead in her masterpiece, Vampire Academy. Lissa Dragomir, a powerful mortal vampire, must resist every temptation to join the Strigoi, a dark breed of vampires that never die. By her side is her best friend Rose, who has committed herself to a dangerous life protecting Lissa from practically becoming the equivalent of a Death Eater in the vampire world.
