It is actually easy to see all the sites in this post without needing a car. Heres a quick itinerary.

3 Days in London

Start your Harry Potter adventure with 3 days in London. Wed suggest one full day to see all the Harry Potter sights in London, either on your own or on a walking tour.

Then, use your other two days to take a day trip to the Harry Potter Studio and Oxford, and a day trip to Gloucester and Lacock Abbey.

If you want to see more of London, just add in a day or two check out our 2 day London itinerary for some ideas.

Once you are done in London, take the train up to York. This takes around 2 hours, and youll get the best prices if you buy your tickets in advance.

2 Days in York

York makes a good base for a number of Harry Potter filming locations, plus the city itself is beautiful. Its also said that the film producers visited the Shambles area of the city to get some inspiration for creating Diagon Alley.

From York, you can take a full day tour which includes a visit to Durham Cathedral and Goathland train station. If you want to visit Malham Cove, you could also do this by combination of train and bus from York.

After York, its another 2 hours or so by train up to Edinburgh.

3 Days in Edinburgh

From Edinburgh, we recommend taking a day trip down to see Alnwick Castle. Then take another day trip to experience Glencoe, the Hogwarts Express and other filming locations in Scotland.

Running time

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is a 2009 fantasy film directed by David Yates and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures. It is based on J. K. Rowling‘s 2005 novel of the same name. The film, which is the sixth instalment in the Harry Potter film series, was written by Steve Kloves and produced by David Heyman and David Barron. It stars Daniel Radcliffe as Harry Potter, alongside Rupert Grint and Emma Watson as Harry’s best friends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. The story follows Harry’s sixth year at Hogwarts as he receives a mysterious textbook, falls in love, and attempts to retrieve a memory that holds the key to Lord Voldemort‘s downfall. The film is the sequel to Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and was followed by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 .

Filming began on 24 September 2007, leading to the film’s worldwide cinematic release on 15 July 2009, one day short of the fourth anniversary of the corresponding novel’s release. With an estimated budget of $250 million, it is one of the most expensive films ever made and the most expensive film in the Harry Potter film series. The film was simultaneously released in regular cinemas and IMAX 3D everywhere except North America, where its IMAX release was delayed for two weeks.

% Of New Zealand Is Forest

Fans of the series, who are interested in more than just the Lord of the Rings story, may be intrigued to learn that New Zealand is 29% forest. New Zealand, the country where Lord of the Rings was filmed, is covered in trees, which makes it a good fit for filming the two trilogies. As stated by archive.stats.govt.nz, “New Zealands forest resource covers over 8 million hectares, or 29 percent of New Zealands total land area.”

The scene in the above photo is unforgettable. Appearing early in the Fellowship of the Ring, it introduced us to the Nazgûl, who are also called Ringwraiths.

HARRY POTTER FILM LOCATIONS NEW ZEALAND

Harry Potter movie fans in New Zealand may have to dig out the DVDs as the beloved series has been deleted from Netflix.

The streaming giant revealed the devastating news in a tweet, apologising for not warning subscribers in Australia and New Zealand that it was zapping the magical movies from the service:

“I solemnly swear that I’m sorry for not letting you know that Harry Potter was leaving Netflix,” the tweet read.

“Licensing fantastic movies is a beast and we wish we could keep them all.”

The films can still be rented on Lightbox, Amazon, Google Play, Apple TV and iTunes.

All eight Harry Potter films first landed on Netflix in Australia and New Zealand in January 2019, meaning subscribers have had exactly one year to marathon the series.

But blindsided Potterheads were still quick to share their disappointment on social media.

“Was literally halfway through a movie and then it just disappeared off my continue watching. Not cool,” wrote one Twitter user.

Another wrote: “Today’s lesson, boys and girls? Own. Physical. Media.”

The streaming service’s help centre explains that Netflix licenses TV shows and movies from studios and content providers around the world, and those licenses can expire if they are not renewed.

Meanwhile a battle over the Harry Potter films is being waged between two upcoming streaming services.

What Harry Potter Sites Can I Visit From York

Whilst York wasnt a filming location for Harry Potter, it does make a good base for a number of Harry Potter locations which you can visit on a day trip. These include:

    • Malham Cove
    • Goathland train station
    • Durham Cathedral

If you do plan to visit York, see our guide to spending a weekend in York for more ideas.

The Films Were Filmed Entirely In New Zealand

Despite the Lord of the Rings feeling like it was filmed from another planet, the Lord of the Rings motion pictures were filmed entirely in New Zealand. Actors and crew members were transported to various location sometimes by helicopter. New Zealand somehow contains all the places needed for Lord of the Rings Middle-earth location. According to the website of screencrush.com, “More than 350 sets were utilized for the over 100 different shooting sites, which meant bad news for one cast member in particular.” Lord of the Rings would have been a different movie if it were filmed elsewhere.

Kings Cross: Harry Potters Train Station In London

How do you get to Hogwarts? Why, you take a train from Platform 9 and 3/4 at Kings Cross station of course! The scenes from Harry Potter and the Philosopherâs Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets were filmed on location at Kings Cross station, actually between platforms four and five.

Of course, youâll struggle to actually find a real Platform 9 and 3/4 at Kings Cross station today. For a long while there was a trolley located in the wall near platforms nine, however, as it became so popular, it was moved, and can now be found in the main concourse of Kings Cross station, next to a Harry Potter store.

You can have your photo taken pushing the trolley âthroughâ the wall, although be aware that as this is probably the most famous Harry Potter location in London, queues can be lengthy! Lines can be 1 hour to 2 hours long to take a photo so be prepared.

Donât panic if you donât get your shot here though, if you happen to visit the Warner Bros Studio tour , they have a row of trolleys stuck in walls, just ready for you to get the perfect photo!

The Warner Bros Studio Tour The Making Of Harry Potter

HARRY POTTER: Return to Hogwarts Teaser Trailer (2022)

Last on our list of Harry Potter filming locations in London is the Warner Bros Studio, home of the Warner Bros Studio Tour. This is actually a little way outside the city, near Watford Junction, but as itâs such a fabulous place to visit we definitely wanted to include it in our list. If you only do one thing related to Harry Potter in London, make it this.

This film studio was where all eight of the Harry Potter films were actually filmed, and they have retained a great many of the sets, clothing, and props from the movies. You can visit the Great Hall, the railway station, numerous filming locations from inside Hogwarts, the Forbidden Forest, and even Diagon Alley.

Youâll learn many of the secrets of how the films were made, have the opportunity to drink Butterbeer, and generally get all the Harry Potter magic you could imagine. There are also places to stop and eat and a giant gift shop full of all things Harry Potter.

As I said, if you only do one thing on this list of Harry Potter things to do in London, we definitely recommend making it this one â we really enjoyed our visit and learning all about how the films were made.

The visit lasts for about three hours and is largely self-guided, so you can take as much or little time as you like. Thereâs lots to see and do though, so weâd suggest three hours is a good amount to plan for, not including travel time.

Off To Hogwarts We Go: Glenfinnan Viaduct Lochaber Scotland

This viaduct, 100ft above ground, is captured in several Harry Potter films on the route to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. You can journey through this magical landscape just as Harry and friends did, aboard the Jacobite steam train used as the Hogwarts Express in the movie.

See if you can spot where, in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Arthur Weasleys baby-blue flying Ford Anglia lands on the viaduct. The head of the Weasley family modified it to fit eight people, six trunks, two owls and one rat.

New Zealand’s Landscape Is Perfect For Lord Of The Rings

The rolling green hills and mountain ranges make New Zealand fit for filming Lord of the Rings. Director Peter Jackson chose the country because of its impeccably close resemblance to Middle-earth from the Tolkien books. Jackson did not feel the need to use other countries for filming locations since New Zealand, an island country with a population of 4.794 million, had everything he needed. Jackson regarded New Zealand as “the perfect Middle-earth.” It has a place for The Shire, Mordor, Gondor, Rohan, Helm’s Deep, and the mountains that Frodo and Bilbo Baggins would cross in Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit.

    Salzburg And Mondsee Austria

HARRY POTTER FILM LOCATIONS NEW ZEALAND

Even though the movie debuted in 1965, visitors continue to flock to Salzburg, where many portions of The Sound of Music were filmed. For example, stop by the Mirabell Palace and Gardens, where Maria and the children sing “Do-Re-Mi,” or visit the Leopoldskron Palace, the facade of the von Trapp residence. Or head to Basilica St. Michael in Mondsee and see where Captain von Trapp and Maria were married.

Where Was The The Leaky Cauldron Filmed

In the first film the entrance to the Leaky Cauldron was filmed in Leandenhall Market in London. Leandenhall Market was built in the late 19th century and is a beautiful example of a Victorian market. Also this was the location for some exterior Diagon Alley scenes. In the Prisoner of Azkaban film they used Borough Market and the interior shots were done in the Leavesden Film Studios.

    Harry Potter Studio Tour Leavesden

Without doubt, if you are only going to do one Harry Potter related activity when you visit the UK, we think you should make it this a visit to the Harry Potter Studio.

This is where the majority of all eight of the Harry Potter movies were filmed. Following the shooting being completed, Warner Bros. decided to turn much of the property into an attraction that you can visit today.

Unlike the Wizarding World of Harry Potter theme parks in the USA and Japan though, this isnt somewhere you come to take rides. This is more of an experience where you can learn all about what went into making the movies.

Expect to visit original sets, like the Great Hall, Diagon Alley, and the Forbidden Forest. Youll learn all about the green screen technology and digital art that went into creating the Harry Potter world, as well as the models, costumes, and props that brought it all to life.

There is so much to see here it is quite overwhelming. Thankfully theres also butterbeer available for purchase to calm you down.

The tour is, for the most part, self-guided, and it will last you in the region of 3 4 hours to see everything.

In terms of the practicalities of visiting, the Harry Potter Studio Tour is found in Leavesden, just to the north of London. You can get here by public transport, or you can take a guided tour like this which includes transport.

Wed suggest reading through our detailed guide to the Harry Potter Studio Tour for more information and to make the most of your trip.

Where Was Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai Shot In New Zealand

I visited Queenstown where I shot the film. It was one of the most fabulous places in the world. Even today, if somebody tells me to go for a holiday, Id choose that place! He adds, Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai was the first Hindi film to be shot there and after its release, the tourism shot up in that country.

    Malham Cove North Yorkshire

20 Years Of Harry Potter: 8 fun facts about the film | Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone

Malham Cove is a massive limestone formation near to the village of Malham in North Yorkshire. It was formed over 12,000 years ago at the end of the ice age, and is in fact what is left of a massive waterfall.

Its a very picturesque location that is popular with walkers, and the large area at the top of what was the waterfall will be very familiar to Harry Potter fans.

This area was used in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1, when Harry and Hermione are travelling together in an effort to destroy the Horcruxes. The top of Malham Cove is where they camp for the night after being abandoned by Ron.

Malham Cove is free to visit, and the walking trail from Malham Village to the foot of the cove is around a mile each way. You can also climb to the top from a footpath at the base, which is quite steep. However, the views from the top are spectacular and this is the actual Harry Potter filming location so is worth the effort. Overall, its around 30 minutes each way to the top.

If you have time, there are lots more natural attractions to see in the area and plenty of walking trails, including a lovely loop trail that continues from Malham Cove to Goredale Scar. You can see more on visiting as well as tips for walks, on this community website.

The Origins Of Harry Potter In Edinburgh

After her years in Porto, Rowling moved to Edinburgh. It was here, frequenting quaint coffee shops, that she finished the first novel in the series. In fact, ten years later she also finished the last lines of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows in a hotel in Edinburgh.

Youll be surprised to see the interesting comparisons between Edinburghs Victoria Street, and the famous Diagon Alley. You can discover all this and much more during the Harry Potter Free Tour.

Deer Park Heights Contained The Battle Of The Wargs Scene

The Riders of Rohan galloped across this field, which looked slightly different when wargs, a type of vicious and shaggy wolf, attacked. Deer Parks Heights contained the Battle of the Wargs scene, which included the part of Lord of the Rings when Aragorn fell off a cliff. Many thought that Aragorn had passed away when he went missing after the Battle of the Wargs scene. An orc near his end told Legolas and Gimli that Aragorn “took a tumble off the cliff.” The orc had Aragorn’s amulet and seemed to be telling the truth, but Aragorn survived with help from Arwen.
