Every Horcrux In Harry Potter Explained

In the Harry Potter universe, a Horcrux is an object imbued by a dark witch or wizard with a piece of that person’s soul in order to obtain immortality. It’s created by an act of murder, followed by a spell and a “horrific act” . A Horcrux can be an inanimate object or a living thing, though objects are obviously more stable since they don’t die of natural causes.

Voldemort probably learned about Horcruxes through the book “Secrets of the Darkest Art,” which was in the Hogwarts library before Dumbeldore hid it in his office. As Hogwarts student Tom Marvolo Riddle, Voldemort also asked Professor Horace Slughorn about Horcruxes, which Dumbledore discovered years later and was rather angry about, considering Voldemort’s eventual terrorization of the world.

When Voldemort was killed in the First Wizarding War, his spirit managed to remain in a semi-alive state, allowing him to regain power, control others, and eventually return, all because many pieces of his soul were hidden throughout various Horcruxes in Harry Potter’s world. In order to truly defeat Voldemort, all of the Horcruxes had to be destroyed. Voldemort’s soul was divided into seven different Horcruxes, some living things and some objects. A few things went down a bit differently in the books than in the movies, but for the most part, the essentials are the same. Here are all of the Horcruxes explained.

According to series author J.K. Rowling, the invented term Horcrux has no specific etymology, although fans have created their own largely based on the words resemblance to the Latin crux, or cross. Rowling writes that it was devised by the random transposition of syllables during a brainstorming session.

In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Parts 1& 2, and all movies, Voldemort is known to have seven horcruxes before he can dieall seven must be destroyed first.

Voldemort should know what his horcruxes are, so if he knew that Harry was one of them, then why did he kill Harry instead of keeping him alive? Assuming Voldemort wanted to live.

So harry survived the second hit, so really the horcrux being Harry should not have lived in order to kill the horcrux.

When Did Each Horcrux Get Destroyed In The Harry Potter Movies

I have just watched the last of the Harry Potter movies for the second time on a long flight and my brain was addled through lack of sleep. As far as I remember, three of the eight horcruxes were destroyed in that movie.

But I couldn’t make my memory add the total destroyed up to eight across the movies. So when were they all destroyed, in which movie and by whom? And does the total add up to 8?

    • I thought the first horrocrux was Professor Quirrel. He was destroyed in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, by Harry Potter, with his hands. Remember Harry was the horrocrux never ment to be so, technically, there were eight horrocruxes. user19095Feb 20, 2015 at 3:07

The Horcrux hunt was a mission given to Harry Potter in to find all of Lord Voldemort’s remaining Horcruxes and destroy them. The mission fell to Harry Potter to complete. He was joined by Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley, and they set off in the aftermath of Bill Weasley and Fleur Delacour’s wedding.

Lord Voldemort’s had only seven Horcruxes:

  • Nagini the Snake. -> Destroyed by Neville Longbottom in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2
  • Voldemort also retained part of his soul inside him.

They eventually destroyed all of the Horcruxes by 2 May 1998. The hunt ended with the death of Lord Voldemort at the hands of Harry Potter at the end of the Battle of Hogwarts and this is in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2

Herpo pioneered two of the darkest magical techniques known to wizardkind, being the first known wizard to successfully breed the Basilisk, and the first known wizard to have ever successfully created a Horcrux, probably inventing the process by which to do this. His Horcrux would have left his soul unstable, rendering him less than human. He was highly adept with curses, having even invented many himself.
    • Immortality: Being the first known wizard to have created a Horcrux, Herpo achieved immortality, with his soul being earthbound even if his body would have been destroyed.
    • Spell creation: He invented many vile curses, which earned him his well-deserved malevolent reputation.

: Albus Dumbledore destroys Marvolo Gaunts ring with Godric Gryffindors sword in his headmasters office.

Were there 7 or 8 Horcruxes? There were 8 horcruxes. 7 were made by Voldemort intentionally and 1 was made accidentally which was Harry. Harry was the unintended 8th horcrux, due to his souls being so unstable by being split more than once.

Why did Voldemort choose 7 Horcruxes? Voldemort wanted to have his soul splited in 7 parts because he believed that 7 was the most powerful number, the number of perfection. Therefore he created intentionally 6 horcruxes in order to have 7 fragments of his soul: the main one he himself, plus the other parts the horcruxes.

Was the Basilisk a Horcrux? At the end of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Harry faces off with the Basilisk, which manages to sink one of its giant fangs into Harry before it dies. We know for a fact that Basilisk venom is one of the few substances strong enough to destroy a Horcrux. The stone still worked, but the Horcrux was destroyed.

Hepzibah shows Slytherin’s Locket to Tom Riddle. Hokey stands with the box containing Hufflepuff’s Cup

While working at Borgin and Burkes, Tom Riddle befriended Hepzibah, who doted upon him to the extent of having an apparent attraction to him. While Riddle was visiting her on behalf of Mr Burke, ostensibly to negotiate the sale of a suit of goblin-made armour in her possession, she imprudently showed him two of her greatest treasures: Hufflepuff’s cup and Slytherin’s locket.

When she took the locket from Tom’s hands, she caught a glimpse of the greedy red gleam in his eyes, which caused her “foolish smile” and obsessive admiration of the boy to momentarily falter. She still decided that his appearance matched his personality, however.

Two days later, she was found dead a lethal and little known poison was found mixed with her cocoa. Riddle was never suspected Hepzibah’s house-elf, Hokey, confessed to having mistaken the poison for sugar, for which her fate is not revealed.

How Does One Create A Horcrux

In order to create a Horcrux, the witch or wizard must distort their soul to such an extent that it is torn apart. Dumbledore suggests that one of the only ways to do so is cold-blooded murder. However, there could be an argument that numerous other acts can create a horcrux as well, assuming that they are so gruesome that your soul literally cannot handle it.

Is the Resurrection Stone the same as the Sorcerers Stone? No, the sorcerer stone is basically just an elixir which extend a persons life in a form of a stone whereas the Resurrection stone is a magical stone which calls the shadow of the dead. This can be seen/mentioned on Book 7.

What curse was on Dumbledore hand?

After Dumbledore returned to Hogwarts, he used Godric Gryffindors Sword to crack the Resurrection Stone so as to destroy it as a Horcrux. While the act did destroy the ring as one of Riddles Horcruxes, it did not stop the fatal curse. The curse gave Dumbledores hand a withered black look, as though it had died.

Why did the basilisk fang destroy the diary? After being healed, Harry took the fang and stabbed Riddles diary, destroying that Horcrux beyond magical repair. Because Harry had stabbed the Basilisk with the sword, it was imbued with Basilisk venom and was therefore able to destroy Horcruxes and poison opponents that it cut through as well.

Dumbledore showing Harry a memory of Tom Riddles past

During the 19961997 school year, Dumbledore began to share his findings regarding Voldemorts Horcruxes with Harry Potter. Using the Pensieve, he showed Harry a series of memories about the boy who was Tom Riddle and the man who was Voldemort. During these lessons, Dumbledore taught Harry about the behaviours and psychology of Voldemort hoping to impart a thorough understanding of the man upon Harry. In January 1997, Dumbledore showed Harry a memory of Tom Riddle meeting with the his Potions Master, Horace Slughorn who had recently returned to Hogwarts from retirement. The memory became cloudy, and Slughorns voice boomed out of nowhere.

Can The Killing Curse Destroy A Horcrux

No. The Killing Curse is specifically attuned to target the natural mystical bond that forms between a living body and its soul. A Horcrux works in a completely different way, binding the soul on a physical level to the object, thus creating a complete different kind of connection, which a killing curse wont effect.

The Boy Who Lived Harry Potter

Harry Potter was the accidental Horcrux that Voldemort never intended to make. When Voldemort’s murder attempt failed, a part of his already broken soul took refuge inside of Harry, causing a connection between them that Harry desperately didn’t want. When Harry found out about the part of Voldemort’s soul living inside him, he was very willing to die to get rid of it leaving Voldemort mortal and hoping someone else might finish the job. Fortunately, Harry was able to do this himself with help from the Deathly Hallows.

The road to getting rid of the Horcruxes was a long one. Still, not every detail is known about the creation of Voldemort’s seven Horcruxes, just that they require murder, a spell, and unspeakable acts that the Dark Lord never hesitated in performing.

    How It Was Destroyed

Lucius Malfoy is unaware that Voldemort turned the diary into a Horcrux and only knows that it can open the Chamber of Secrets. So, Malfoy slips the diary to Ginny Weasley, who becomes possessed while writing back and forth to “Tom” in the diary. Feeling left out as a first-year student, Ginny was emotionally vulnerable, allowing for an easy takeover of her psyche. Under the spell, Ginny writes frightening warnings on the walls of Hogwarts with blood and opens the Chamber, releasing the Basilisk again.

Harry follows Ginny down into the Chamber, where he discovers her with a young ghostly form of Tom Riddle, who obviously explains his whole evil plan of using the giant monster to kill Muggle-born students, but doesn’t reveal that the diary is a Horcrux. Harry uses Godric Gryffindor’s sword to kill the Basilisk and then takes one of the dead snake’s fangs, knowing that Basilisk venom is one of the few things that can destroy a powerful object. Harry stabs the diary with the fang, destroying its power and eliminating Voldemort’s first Horcrux.
