As Draco Malfoy’s pastry-loving henchman Vincent Crabbe, Jamie Waylett did a suitable enough job. The young actor, like many of his contemporaries in the series, was completely new to the world of film when he suited up as the Slytherin sycophant, but he gradually got more and more screen time throughout his six-film tenure and was convincing as the sniveling sidekick. By the time Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 arrived, however, Gregory Goyle was seen standing next to a new Malfoy lieutenant: Blaise Zabini .

Meanwhile, Crabbe was completely out of the picturewhile the role itself wasn’t recast, the character was shuffled out of sight to make room for Zabiniand it all stemmed from Waylett’s off-camera run-ins with the law. Waylett was arrested in 2009 after he was caught growing marijuana plants in his mother’s home. That incident alone was enough to lose him his prime position in the Potter world , and the troubles would only continue for him. The actor was later arrested again in 2012 for participating in a riot, and this time, he faced jail time. At least one of his co-stars would publicly rise to his defense, but the damage was still done to the actor’s career, and he hasn’t worked in a single film since.

Verne Troyer And Warwick Davis As Griphook

Best known for playing Mini-Me in the Austin Powers movies, Verne Troyer also originally played the role of the Gringotts Bank goblin, Griphook, in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. Although Troyer was shown in the film, his voice was dubbed over by another actor with dwarfism, Warwick Davis. You may remember Davis as the Ewok Wicket from Star Wars: The Return of the Jedi and Willow from the film of the same name. It’s likely that the combination of Troyer’s high-pitched voice and American accent weren’t satisfactory for the vision the filmmakers had of Griphook.

When next we saw Griphook, in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1, Troyer had been replaced by Warwick Davis completely. Up until that point, Davis had actually played another Harry Potter character, Professor Filius Flitwick, the Charms master and head of Ravenclaw house. In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, Davis actually played both roles within the same film, although Professor Flitwick looks significantly younger than he had in the earlier films.

Derek Deadman And Jim Tavare As Tom The Innkeeper

In Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, Tom the bartender is one of the first people to recognize Harry and treat him like a celebrity. They meet on Harry’s first trip to Diagon Alley when Hagrid escorts him to get his things for school. Derek Deadman plays Tom in this instance, portraying the bartender as a kindly old man who takes care of his customers. Deadman had a slew of TV and film credits before Harry Potter, but all were minor roles, where he often played criminals, taxi drivers, or an everyday Joe.

Then Alfonso Cuaron came along and made probably the weirdest recasting in Harry Potter history, transforming Tom into a snaggle-toothed hunchback whom he should’ve just renamed Igor. Jim Tavare played Tom in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, greeting Harry as he arrives at the Leaky Cauldron and taking him to see the Minister for Magic, Cornelius Fudge. Tavare’s performance is comedic gold, but is completely different from the character seen in the books. Harry actually refers to him as toothless and wizened, a far cry from the quirky depiction in the film.

The Harry Potter cast was perfectly chosen and it’s hard to imagine many of the characters being played by anyone else.

Alan Rickman was so perfect as Severus Snape that most of the adult characters were aged up so he could be in the films, while Emma Watson is almost identical to Hermione Granger.

However, for various reasons there were some characters across the franchise who had to be recast.

From tragic deaths to behind-the-scenes drama, some actors had to be replaced during the course of making the movies.

There are the obvious ones, such as Michael Gambon taking over as Professor Dumbledore when Richard Harris tragically died, but many fans might not know who originally played Lord Voldemort.

For over twenty years now, the Harry Potter films have gifted fans with some of the greatest movie moments of all time. Kids and adults alike have reveled in the chance to see the most famous wizard of all time hold his first wand, battle the basilisk, and produce a Patronus with that chill-inducing cry, Expecto Patronum! Verne Troyer As Griphook

The casting of the Harry Potter films was limited to British thespiansa rule so strict it even forced producers to turn down Robin Williams for the role of Hagridbut Verne Troyer became the rare exception when he was cast as the Gringotts banker Griphook in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. Troyer was the only American actor with a major role in the film, but the character was voiced by his English co-star Warwick Davis, who also portrayed Professor Flitwick and another bank teller in the film.

By the time Griphook became more significant to the story in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Davis took over the role completely. Davis later explained his decision to seek out the role. “Griphook has so much more depth to him than I’d ever been able to get into my work as Professor Flitwick. So, I went in and read for David Yates and the casting director, and gave them a best shot, David left a message that I’d got the part.”

Leilah Sutherland And Rochelle Douglas As Alicia Spinnet

Alicia Spinnet is one of those minor Harry Potter characters who often appears in the background, but never actually has any lines. Therefore, she has been played by a number of different actresses, although only two actually received credit for the role. According to IMDB, Leilah Sutherland played Alicia Spinnet in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, where she is seen with Harry when he plays his first Quidditch match.

Alicia was a chaser for the Gryffindor quidditch team and became a member of Dumbledore’s Army in the books, although it’s unclear whether or not she’s part of the villainous club in the films. Rochelle Douglas took over the role for Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, again showing up during a Quidditch related scene. Neither Sutherland or Douglas have any other acting credits, but Douglas is a former international gymnastics champion and current girl’s gymnastics coach for Europa Gym in Crayford, a town about 20 miles east of London.

Peter Cartwright And David Ryall As Elphias Doge

Though not shown very much in the films, Elphias Doge was one of Albus Dumbledore’s best friends, whom he met while at Hogwarts. The two friends were supposed to travel the world together after they graduated, but Dumbledore was unable to do so after the death of his mother. In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Doge was played by Peter Cartwright, a long time bit part actor who had a few featured roles before his death in 2013. Cartwright had no dialogue in his appearance as Doge, as he merely showed up alongside the other members of the Advanced Guard to accompany Harry Potter to the Order of the Phoenix’s headquarters at 12 Grimmauld Place.

Doge shows up again in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 during Bill Weasley and Fleur Delacour’s wedding, this time played by David Ryall. Harry engages Doge in conversation about Dumbledore, since he had written an obituary for him in The Daily Prophet. Ryall had a fifty-year acting career in both theater and film before appearing in the Harry Potter series, and he did a fine job as Cartwright’s replacement.

Special And Visual Effects

Industrial Light & Magic and Framestore handled the key visual effects shots for the film, while The Moving Picture Company, Cinesite, and Double Negative crafted additional VFX material.

Cuarón originally wanted to move away from CGI toward puppetry. He hired master puppeteer Basil Twist and experimented with underwater puppets to figure out the movements of dementors. The tests were shot in slow motion, but ultimately the method wasn’t practical. The water test footage provided creative direction for the visual effects team, adding the intangible metaphysical quality Cuarón was seeking. Visual effects supervisors Tim Burke and Roger Guyett, the Industrial Light& Magic VFX team, and Temime collaborated in the creation of dementors.

Cuarón commented on the difficulty of creating Buckbeak, which took months of research and preparation, beginning with the creature’s skeletal design. Cuarón said, “Once we worked out the physiology, the way his bones would actually move, we had to capture his personality, which is a mixture of regal elegance, particularly when he is flying, and the clumsy and greedy creature he becomes back on land.” Creature effects supervisor Nick Dudman created several practical hippogriffs for the production, while Burke and Guyett oversaw the creation of the computer-generated version. Guyett cited the complex movement of the feathers as an achievement that had “never been done before.”

Rob Knox Who Brought Marcus Belby To The Screen In Harry Potter Tragically Died At Age 18

This death within the Harry Potter film franchise is just tragic: At the young age of 18, actor Rob Knox who played Marcus Belby was fatally stabbed in South East London in 2008. As noted by The Guardian, Knox was killed by 22-year-old Karl Bishop outside a club. Bishop seriously injured four friends who were accompanying Knox at the time, one left with permanent spine damage.

Bishop was sentenced to life in prison for the act, but the tragedy left a huge hole in the Harry Potter world and beyond. Just a handful of days before his death, Knox had wrapped filming Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince the film’s premiere would later be dedicated to him. The director of the film, David Yates, reflected on Knox’s tragic death. “You are surrounded by young people all day long who bring a great commitment to what they do, and Rob was no different,” Yates said, as noted by The Guardian. “He came in and wanted to do brilliant work, he put his heart and soul into it, and you just think ‘what a terrible waste.'”

Beloved Actor Verne Troyer Who Brought Harry Potter’s Griphook To Life Died In 2018

Harry Potter features wizards, witches, creatures, elves, mythical animals you name it and one such role within the series is Griphook, a goblin who works at Gringott’s Wizarding Bank, played by the legendary actor Verne Troyer. As noted by The Washington Post, Troyer was not only known for playing Griphook, as his performance in Austin Powers also had a major impact on the entertainment industry.

However, Troyer’s fame and success could not keep him away from harmful habits, and he developed an addiction to alcohol. “As you know, I’ve battled alcohol addiction in the past,” he wrote on social media in 2017 . “While it’s not always been an easy fight, I’m willing to continue my fight day by day.” On April 21, 2018, Troyer died after being admitted to the hospital for alcohol abuse. His family later shared that he had other “battles,” including suicidal tendencies and depression an announcement later revealed that he had died from multiple organ failure.

Danielle Tabor And Tiana Benjamin As Angelina Johnson

Like the other Gryffindor chasers, Katie Bell and Alicia Spinnet, Angelina Johnson was recast in the later films. Danielle Tabor played her in the first three films, when she had no lines and only appeared in the background among her fellow Gryffindors. It’s unknown why exactly she was recast besides her character having lines in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, but it may have also been because she didn’t look the same age as the other actors in her year, especially the Weasley twins.

Tabor was replaced by Tiana Benjamin for Goblet of Fire, when Angelina Johnson goes to the Yule Ball with Fred Weasley. Benjamin was also supposed to reappear in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, but had to turn down the role. She was a regular on the long-running British soap opera, EastEnders, and her shooting schedule conflicted with the production of Order of the Phoenix. Angelina Johnson was left out of the next few movies, even though she’s a part of Dumbledore’s Army in the books and participates in the Battle of Hogwarts. However, Danielle Tabor actually reprised her role for the filming of the Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey ride at the Universal Studios theme parks. She’s seen with the other Gryffindors waving at riders during the end sequence.

Sharon Sandhu And Afshan Azad As Padma Patil

One-half of the Patil sisters, Padma was originally played by Sharon Sandhu in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Sandhu was another young actor who was probably just cast as a student in the background, since she was originally just credited as Girl #2. Even though she was a Ravenclaw in the books, the filmmakers chose to keep her in Gryffindor with her sister Parvati. Padma and Parvati were described by Dean Thomas as the best-looking girls in the school during Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Padma was likely recast for that film since Goblet of Fire is when she went to the Yule Ball with Ron Weasley and had a larger role.

Afshan Azhad took over as Padma and continued to play her for the rest of the films, showing up for Dumbledore’s Army meetings with her sister and conversing with other students after the Battle of Hogwarts. Although Azhad has no other film or TV credits listed, she continued to work in Asia as a presenter for the Asian Media Awards and still travels to comic book conventions. She also made headlines back in 2011, when her father and brother attacked her for dating a Hindu man, which goes against her family’s Muslim tradition.
