Ariana Died In A Duel Gone Wrong
When Aberforth returned from Hogwarts, he was not pleased to find that his brother had been neglecting his responsibilities to Ariana in favor of planning a revolution with Grindelwald. Aberforth angrily confronted Dumbledore, telling him that any plans for a revolution would mean dragging Ariana with him. Realizing how misguided he was, Dumbledore snapped back to reality, and a furious Grindelwald attacked Aberforth, but Dumbledore moved to defend his brother.
The three engaged in a violent duel, which Ariana tried to stop. However, her powers were erratic and she was hit with a stray curse and died. Grindelwald fled, leaving the two brothers to grieve. Aberforth blamed Dumbledore for the death of their sister , and the relationship between the two brothers was strained for the rest of their lives. No one knew who had fired the curse that killed Ariana, but Dumbledore always feared that it was him.

From The Very Beginning Dumbledore Sent Harry Off To Fight While Holding Back Crucial Information
In his first year at Hogwarts, 11-year-old Harry does the unthinkable and goes up against Lord Voldemort alone.
But even after this dangerous, traumatic experience, he defends Dumbledore to his friends by saying the headmaster just wanted to give him “a chance” to do it on his own.
As Harry is literally lying in the hospital wing after this horrible encounter, he asks Dumbledore about his scar and his connection to Voldemort. But instead of explaining as much as he could, Dumbledore tells him he’s too young to know those answers yet.
He was apparently old enough to face grave danger and the most powerful dark wizard but too young to know the truth about his own history.
Later in “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix,” withholding that information about Harry’s connection to Voldemort came at the heavy price of Sirius Black’s life.
If Harry knew how Voldemort could manipulate his mind, he wouldn’t have fallen for the trap and rushed to the Department of Mysteries thinking he was going to save his godfather.
Dumbledore explicitly knew this was a possibility, but he decided not to tell Harry. He calls his close-lipped approach “an old man’s mistake” and explains that he was distant because he thought Voldemort might use Harry “as a means to spy” on him.
Dumbledore also knew about the prophecy that Professor Trelawney foretold long before Harry ever came to Hogwarts. He knew that in order to kill Voldemort, Harry likely had to die as well.

Hog’s Head Inn Barman
The original Order that Aberforth was a member of
At some point, Aberforth became the barman of the Hog’s Head Inn in Hogsmeade village. When Tom Riddle returned to Hogwarts to apply for the Defence Against the Dark Arts post, Albus revealed that one of ‘the local barmen’, presumably Aberforth himself, told him about Riddle’s followers awaiting him in the Hog’s Head. Later, when the First Wizarding War broke out, Aberforth joined the Order of the Phoenix, opposing Lord Voldemort and his Death Eaters.
First Wizarding War
In 1980, Albus visited the Hog’s Head to interview Sybill Trelawney for the position of Divination professor at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Severus Snape, then a Death Eater, overheard part of Trelawney’s prophecy about Harry Potter and Lord Voldemort. Snape was unable to hear its entirety, however, as Aberforth caught him eavesdropping and threw him out.
Between the wars
Aberforth as the barman for the Hog’s Head between the wars
During the 19881989 school year, Jacob’s sibling visited Hog’s Head Inn to ask about Mundungus Fletcher. Aberforth expressed his hatred towards Fletcher but didn’t give them his whereabouts. He then presented them a letter from Albus, which was said to be given to them should they appear in Hog’s Head looking lost.

Unsung Heroes: Aberforth Dumbledore
So what if Aberforth Dumbledore liked goats? A goat was his Patronus. He kept goats. Tended to them. Was fond of goat-related fiction. But we dont need to dwell on that.
The point is that Aberforth Dumbledore was also an unsung hero in the Harry Potter books. After all, he helped Harry during a pivotal point in his story, and was never afraid to butt heads with others.
So Aberforth wasnt a people person. He proudly refused entry to, and maintained a longstanding grudge with, nefarious swindler Mundungus Fletcher, for example. Hed been alleged to sling dung goat dung, naturally at people he had disagreements with. Hed frequently been inclined to describe close associates as bloody fools or old berk.
But this crotchetiness is understandable when you consider his life story.
As a child Aberforth saw his innocent younger sister attacked by Muggles just for being different. His sister Ariana went on to shun most people, apart from Aberforth. Struggling to keep a lid on her magical abilities, Ariana went on to accidentally kill their mother during a violent outburst. All the while his older brother, the illustrious Albus Dumbledore, was able to focus on his work, proceed to become headmaster of Hogwarts, and go down in history as one of the greats.
But Aberforths pivotal role in fighting the forces of darkness cannot be overstated.
After Aberforth broke Albuss nose at their sisters funeral, decades of brooding resentment between the two brothers followed.
James And Lily Potter
- “James had shown it to me just a few days previously. It explained much of his undetected wrongdoing at school”
- Albus Dumbledore to Harry Potter
Dumbledore first met James Potter and Lily Evans during their first year at Hogwarts, where he was the Headmaster. Dumbledore had a good relationship with both of them, knowing them both to be pure souls. James had lent Dumbledore his Invisibility Cloak one of the three Deathly Hallows. After James’s death Dumbledore returned the cloak to James’s son, Harry.
When the Potters became Voldemort’s targets due to a prophecy made about their son and the Dark Lord, Dumbledore attempted to protect them by casting the Fidelius Charm and offering to be their Secret Keeper, but the role of Secret Keeper went instead to Peter Pettigrew, which turned out to be a fatal mistake, as Peter turned out to be a spy, and he betrayed Lily and James to Voldemort, who killed them. Dumbledore was very saddened by their deaths and dedicated the rest of his life to protecting their son, Harry, without giving him any happiness in his childhood. He often told Harry about the great goodness of his parents, and repeatedly consoled him with the assurance that his parents would never ever truly leave him because of their love for him. Dumbledore also believed that Harry’s love for his parents was his greatest power.
He Taught Two Different Subjects At Hogwarts
Following the death of Ariana, Dumbledore eventually found his way back to Hogwarts, having always enjoyed the idea of teaching. He became the Defense Against the Dark Arts professor, in part to prepare the future generation for the war he knew was coming. Dumbledore was beloved by his students, but he was under the suspicious eye of the Ministry of Magic, who were mistrustful of him after his time with Grindelwald.
It’s quite possible that Dumbledore might have been one of the last great Defense Against the Dark Arts teachers, because the position would eventually be cursed by Voldemort so that the job couldn’t be held for longer than one year. Sometime in or before 1943, Dumbledore became the Professor of Transfiguration, which is basically changing the shape of people and things. From there, he was on track to become Headmaster, the position he held for most of the series.
He Was In Love With Grindelwald
Dumbledore raised his siblings in Godric’s Hollow , where he would eventually meet a young, brilliant wizard named Gellert Grindelwald. Dumbledore and Grindelwald shared much in common and the two of them eventually became close friends, bonding over their intellect and shared enthusiasm of the Deathly Hallows.
Friendship turned to romance, and while Dumbledore loved Grindelwald, it was only recently that Rowling confirmed the two of them shared an intense sexual relationship. However, Grindelwald was not a good influence, and he began to turn Dumbledore to an anti-Muggle point of view. In fact, Dumbledore began to agree with Grindelwald’s idea of wizard domination and helped him plan the early stages of his “revolution.” Dumbledore ignored Grindelwald’s obvious darkness and he would soon pay for it dearly.

Harry Potter: 10 Times Dumbledore Went Too Far
Hogwarts’ Headmaster may seem like a kindly old man, but Albus Dumbledore has a habit of dealing in extremes and taking things too far.
The 2022 release ofFantastic Beasts 3: The Secrets Of Dumbledore turns the attention of Harry Potter fans toward the powerful and mysterious wizard who was the original symbol of the war against Voldemort. First introduced as the kind, if eccentric, headmaster of the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Albus Dumbledore is in fact so much more than that. Even beyond the numerous titles he’s earned throughout his long career, Dumbledore’s secrets and schemes influence the lives of countless people, most often in ways that don’t end well.
In Harry Potter, the old headmaster dies at Severus Snape’s hands in a final attempt to give the forces of the light an edge over the Dark Lord Voldemort, but he leaves too many unanswered questions behind. Albus Dumbledore has simply gone too far too often, and even after he dies, it’s those who survive that have to pay the price.
Joining The Hogwarts Staff
- “I was present at Mr. Potterâs trial in 1995. He could produce a corporeal Patronus by then, and he had learned it at the age of thirteen. I also know that he helped a lot of students get ready for their O.W.L. in Defense that following school year through the group known as Dumbledoreâs Army. Although You-Know-Who is gone it does not mean that we should not be prepared. There will always be evil in this world and it will be my job to prepare the students for whatever dangers they might face.”
- â Tiberius Odgen’s Speech to the reporters of the Daily Prophet
After the Battle, Tiberius joined the Hogwarts Staff both as the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher after Amycus Carrow was captured, tried and sentenced to Azkaban and the Head of Gryffindor after Minerva McGonnagal was evaluated to Headmistress of Hogwarts. Before beginning his new job, Tiberius made a speech to the reporters of the Daily Prophet, expressing his delight at being able to return to teach at his old school. Due to Voldemort’s jinx on Tiberius’s job position being lifted upon it’s caster’s death, Tiberius taught longer than any of his predecessors after Professor Merrythought’s retirement, allowing Hogwarts to keep this good teacher in the post as it moved forward towards recovery from the dark times of the Second War. From time to time, Tiberius allowed Harry Potter to give lectures on the subject, after Potter became the head of the Auror Department.
He Brands Tom Riddle As Evil From The Get
The stalemate with Grindelwald continues until their duel in 1945, which ends with Albus’ win. But throughout this time, Albus dedicates himself to his teaching career at Hogwarts. In 1938, he delivers Tom Riddle’s Hogwarts letter to Wool’s Orphanage, and the matron there informs him Tom has been using his magic to terrify and hurt the children. During their conversation, Tom confirms this, and Albus sets fire to Tom’s wardrobe to point out magic shouldn’t be abused. It’s an overreaction and not the best first impression on either part.
The problem is that Tom Riddle was a troubled child, living in the Muggle world during the Second World War. His behavior was violent, but if he had received some assistance, he may not have turned out as evil as he did. While it is speculated that Tom Riddle was born unable to love due to his mother using Amortentia on his father, this is a misinterpretation of J.K. Rowling’s words.
Hermiones Enchanted Galleons Remained Priceless
In the early weeks of the Carrow regime, Neville, Ginny and Luna used these charmed coins to communicate, sneaking out to graffiti walls with phrases like Dumbledores Army, Still Recruiting. Later, with the Carrows stepping up the torture of D.A. members like Michael Corner caught releasing an imprisoned first year the coins remained the D.A.s main point of communication. Luna used hers to let Neville know she was safe, and Neville used them to call the other members of the D.A. to Hogwarts as Harry, Ron and Hermione returned.

Harry Potter: The Hogwarts Houses Of Every Original Member Of The Order Of The Phoenix
Based on what we know about the original Order of the Phoenix, what were all the known Houses of the members?
Not a lot is known about the details of the original Order of the Phoenix. In Harry Potter’s time, he is told only who the original members were, and given a group photo of them – and of course, he learns a fair bit about how they died, courtesy of Barty Crouch, posing as Mad-Eye Moody. What is known is that this group includes some of the bravest witches and wizards of the First Wizarding War, and they were gathered together by Dumbledore to fight against Voldemort.
As for the Hogwarts houses of these members, a lot of them are unknown – simply not mentioned in the books. Sturgis Podmore, Mundungus Fletcher, Marlene McKinnon, Emmeline Vance, Elphias Doge, Dorcas Meadowes, Dedalus Diggle, Caradoc Dearborne, and Benjy Fenwick are mentioned largely in passing or as minor characters, and their time at Hogwarts is not discussed. And although Aberforth Dumbledore and Alastor Moody are major characters, their Houses are never technically revealed, either.
The rest are, unsurprisingly, heavy on the Gryffindor students, but we can assume that some of the non-mentioned members included those of Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff .
Frank & Alice Longbottom
This is the most tenuous connection, but it’s highly probable that Neville’s parents were also Gryffindors, like him. However, little is known about them, except their skill, and the tragedy that left them in St Mungo’s hospital for life. It’s also not known if August Longbottom was in Gryffindor, which might cement the idea of a House lineage in the family – although it is known that she failed Charms while at school!
