Who Is Filch In Harry Potter

Don't Miss

He Was Good At His Job

Harry Potter Theory: Filch Is Actually A Poltergeist?!

We all know that Argus Filch liked to play by the rules. Every year, there were more items added to his list of forbidden objects, new corridors that were off limits and, in the case of Harrys fifth year, the dreaded Educational Decrees.

But heres the thing: Filch was just doing his job.

Yes, weve heard him relishing the thought of catching students with a troubling amount of enthusiasm

Sniff around, my sweet, they might be lurking in a corner.Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone

But to be fair, this stuff was probably in the mans job description. Any caretaker of schools magical or otherwise has to keep the building clean and keep an eye out for unruly students thats just standard caretaking decorum.

Heaven forbid he actually kept young children away from corridors containing gigantic three-headed dogs or Forbidden Forests that were home to countless dangerous creatures! Guys, Filch was just looking out for everyone. Rules are cool.

Under Argus Filch’s Ownership

Mrs Norris on the look out for mischief makers

Mrs Norris was born sometime prior to 1984, and become the pet cat of the Hogwarts school caretaker, Argus Filch. She formed an unusually strong bond with her owner, and often alerted him to any misbehaving students almost instantly. Because of this, she along with Filch were widely loathed by most of the Hogwarts student body, and many students had the urge to “give her a good kick“.

During the 19911992 school year, Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger often narrowly escaped the cat on their nightly trips through the school throughout their first year. Harry once got caught by her one day for tracking mud on the floor. She and Filch nearly caught Harry, Ron, Hermione and Neville Longbottom on the night Harry had gone to duel Draco Malfoy. To avoid them, they hid in a room on the forbidden third floor corridor, and unknowingly encountering Fluffy.

During the 1991 Christmas holidays when Harry and Ron first encountered the Mirror of Erised on a late night stroll, she noticed them being out of bed and wandering around the castle at night. Harry had a suspicion that she was able to see him even when he was under his Invisibility Cloak, although she may have just sensed someone there but cannot see, as cats are known to possess highly advanced senses that humans do not have.

Pebbles The Maine Coon Who Became A Star

Of the four cats known to have played Mrs. Norris, only Pebbles has a published backstory.

Pebbles belonged to Dawn Talman from the Kittycoonz cattery in southern England.

Pebbles was a breeding Maine Coon who had two complicated pregnancies which resulted in caesareans.

Her owners and veterinarians decided that she needed to be spayed for her own well being. After that, her life in a cattery became difficult as he couldnt breed any longer.

She became bored and started acting up. Her owners decided it was time to find Pebbles a better home.

Before Dawn Talman and Kittycoonz could place Pebbles somewhere, they received a called from Gary Gero from Birds and Animals Unlimited.

These are the same trainers behind the new cat movie, Keanu.

Gary and his team where contacting lots of Maine Coon breeders in the UK asking if they had any cats in their family which could potentially do well in a movie.

Dawn told Gary about Pebbles and the team went to meet her in person.

The trainers from Birds and Animals found that Pebbles was perfect and a cat star was born!

Pebbles was trained for weeks to walk to a mark and stop.

This became her expert trick and therefore was chosen to be the cat actor that would star in the scenes in which Mrs. Norris wandered the long halls at Hogwarts School of Wizardry.

In the first few movies, Mrs. Norris was given red eyes with digital editing, but in the last of the movies she had blue eyes.

Hes Terrible Because Hes Bitter Not Evil

Although Filch is a generally pretty nasty human being, its not necessarily down to an innate character flaw, but the result of his history. Had Filch been born a wizard, he would probably have become a very different, potentially quite successful, member of the wizarding community. As a squib, however, Filch is shunned from childhood. Raised by magical parents, he would have grown up aware of all the wonderful magic in the world, but been unable to use it. As a squib child, he couldnt attend Hogwarts with his peers in the magical community, and was undoubtedly bullied over his status . Unlike fellow Squib Arabella Figg, who seems relatively content with her life, Filch is miserable and bitter, suggesting that he had a very tough time growing up without magic. He is still attempting to learn, as well, which shows a certain degree of self-loathing and an unwillingness to accept his lot in life.

In short, Filch is a cautionary tale for the wizarding world. He is a character who is so twisted and embittered by his treatment by the rest of the community that he takes delight in physically punishing those children who were born magical. Hes a bitter old man, for sure, but hes also not an evil one.

He Became Caretaker In 1973

We do not know how old Argus Filch is in the books, as his date of birth has never been revealed. We can assume that he is quite old, however, based on his description as rheumatic, and his general physical appearance. Hes been at Hogwarts since the 70s, when he took over as caretaker, and we have no idea what he was doing prior to that appointment, or even how he came to get the job.

Filch took over from the previous caretaker, a man named Apollyon Pringle . Pringle was caretaker when Molly Weasley was at Hogwarts, and according to her , he was a brutal man who was a big fan of corporal punishment. Filch deeply respects his predecessor, and often bemoans the fact that he is not allowed to use the same methods to discipline students.

Percy Weasley Chris Rankin

After playing the pompously-reformed Percy Weasley in the Harry Potter films, Chris Rankin largely put acting aside. Instead he took on work behind the camera, working as a production coordinator for Atlantis, Downton Abbey, and A Discovery of Witches. He did, however, make an appearance as Mycroft in the Hillywood Shows parody of Sherlock. If youd like a chance to meet Rankin, youre in luck! Like his fellow Weasley brothers, Rankin can also be found at many fan conventions throughout the year.

Character Analysis: Argus Filch In Harry Potter

Argus Filch is solely known for being the caretaker at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He is also known as Mr. Filch. He isnt known to be an evil type person, although he can be short tempered at times. This alone is one of the main reasons he has become unpopular with the students of Hogwarts and to be quite truthful some of the staff too. Most of the students arent able to evade Filch if theyve been caught at something, unless you are dealing with the Weasley twins, Fred and George, who happen to have had the Marauders map.

Mr. Filch favors toward harsher punishments and once said he still has the shackles that were used to hang the students from the ceiling. His favor to these types of punishments is what led to him joining sides with Professor Dolores Umbridge, Hogwarts High Inquisitor. Argus Filch is also known for his dislike of mud, joke shop products and eventually comes to ban them from the school grounds, and anything else that might effect the cleanliness of Hogwarts.

Argus Filch is revealed as a squib in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets when Harry finds his Kwikspell forms on Filchs desk. Filch being so angry and bitter is questioned to be relative to the fact that students are learning magic all around him, yet he can not do one ounce of it himself.

The Casting Of Mrs Norris For The Harry Potter Movies

When it was time to cast Mrs. Norris the cat for the Harry Potter movies, the art directors and producers decided that she would be played by a Maine Coon cat.

The description of Mrs. Norris in the books was of a scrawny and messy cat but Maine Coon cats are stocky and usually large.

To keep the original feel of Mrs. Norris with a Maine Coon, the trainers and cat animal makeup artists kept their the hair messy and prickly with special products while on set.

The casting and training of Mrs. Norris were done by Birds & Animals Unlimited.

They are a team of animal trainers who prepare animal actors for movies. The search for the cats that would play Mrs. Norris covered most of the United Kingdom.

They visited lots of Maine Coon catteries and shelters and ultimately used around four or five cats.

The most memorable of all the cats that played Mrs. Norris were three rescued cats Alanis, Cornilus and Maximus and a retired older cat from a UK breeder, called Pebbles.

Most animals in movies are played by more than one animal. This is because most of the time one animal wont respond to all the commands that trainers teach them.

For example, in regards to the cats that played Mrs. Norris, each of the cats had a specific role.

Even though cat training is tough and takes a lot of work, no Maine Coon cats were hurt in the filming of the Harry Potter movie series. Neither were all the other animals that acted in the films.

A Look At How Argus Filch A Man With No Magical Abilities Managed To Keep Witches And Wizards In Check At Hogwarts In Harry Potter

Pin by F. P. on Costume Argus Filch

While the obvious answer might be badly!. It is a question that must occur to readers and viewers of the series. Filch, a squib, was unable to use magic and so could not attend Hogwarts. Although he was very antagonistic towards Harry, Hermione, and Ron throughout the Harry Potter series, this might be in part why. Yet there were a few strategies Filch employed against the students to even the playing field, or rather Quidditch field!

Of course, none of the below strategies worked against Peeves the Poltergeist who, given he was immortal, was an opponent far out of Filchs league!

How Are Cat Actors Trained

Pebbles and her companion cat actors who played Mrs. Norris, were tested to see what commands they responded to best.

All the cats were probably taught all the commands but were then separated for training in the ones they performed better at.

Animal trainers use a series of clicking and buzzing sounds along with treats and rewards to train the cats to do certain things.

Pebbles was trained to hit a mark, which is walking in a specified direction and stop at a mark on cue from the trainers.

For scenes in which the cat must sit in a specific place and move its head in a certain direction, trainers use long pointing sticks with a treat attached to the end of it.

Attention and response to commands with clicks and buzzers are always rewarded with treats.

After a while, all it takes is for a spoken command and a set of clicks for the cat to do what the trainer asks him or her to do.

When a number of cats are used to play the same role, the trainers do their best to find a group of animals that look extremely similar to each other.

But sometimes there can be minimal differences in color patches for example. To fix this problem, makeup artists help the trainers to match the colors between the cats with animal friendly makeup.

Its a rumor on the internet that for Mrs. Norris, the FX department created a special collar for the cats to wear which had a longer tuft of hair that would look the same on all the cat actors.
