Why Did Voldemort HAVE to Kill the Potters? – Harry Potter Explained

Rowling establishes Voldemort throughout the series as an extremely powerful, intelligent, and ruthless dark wizard, described as the greatest and most powerful Dark Wizard of all time. He is known as one of the greatest Legilimens in the world and a highly accomplished Occlumens he can read minds and shield his own from penetration. Besides Dumbledore, he is also the only wizard ever known to be able to apparate silently. Voldemort was also said to fear one wizard alone, Dumbledore.

On her website, Rowling wrote that Voldemort’s wand is made of yew, whose sap is poisonous and which symbolises death. It forms a deliberate contrast to Harry’s wand, which is made of holly, which she chose because holly is alleged to repel evil.

Rowling establishes in the books that Voldemort is magically connected to Harry via Harry’s forehead scar. He disembodies himself when his Killing Curse targeting Harry rebounds on him, leaving the scar on Harry’s forehead. In the books, and to a lesser extent in the films, Harry’s scar serves as an indicator of Voldemort’s presence: it burns when the Dark Lord is near or when Voldemort is feeling murderous or exultant. According to Rowling, by attacking Harry when he was a baby Voldemort gave him “tools no other wizard possessedthe scar and the ability it conferred, a magical window into Voldemort’s mind”.

He Didn’t Figure Out Harry Was A Horcrux

Albus Dumbledore is undoubtedly a genius and one of the greatest wizards who has ever lived. And although it’s hard to admit, the same could be said about Lord Voldemort. So why exactly didn’t Voldemort seem to figure out that Harry was a Horcrux, even though Dumbledore himself did?

There really isn’t anyone in the world alive who is more of a Horcrux expert than Voldemort is, so why didn’t he ever even suspect that Harry may have been a Horcrux? Ironically, if Voldemort had figured that out and not tried to kill Harry he may have survived longer.

Dolores Umbridge Betrayed Her Own Family

J.K. Rowling, who penned the original Harry Potter book series, was pretty clear about why she created the character of Umbridge in the first place: she didnt want the concept of evil to be entirely black and white. She expresses this through Sirius Black , who, during Harrys fifth year, tells his godson that the world isnt simply divided into totally good people and nefarious Death Eaters making it clear that bad people can also work for seemingly virtuous causes like the Ministry of Magic.

In an essay on Wizarding World, Rowling relays how Umbridge turned on her own family in order to succeed within the Department of Magical Law Enforcement she hated her father because of his lack of ambition within the Ministry and ultimately got him fired, and lied about her Muggle mother to assume pure-blood status. As Rowling tells it, anybody who asked about Umbridges family would end up experiencing some kind of accident or misfortune, showing the lengths Umbridge would go to in order to cover up her real lineage or the fact that her father was a Ministry janitor.

What Happened When Voldemort Tried To Kill Harry

A post shared by Harry Potter Film on Oct 1, 2019 at 12:18pm PDT

Voldemort was not able to kill Harry because Harry was the true master of the Elder Wand. So, therefore, Harry survived. Instead, Voldemort unknowingly made himself more vulnerable by trying to kill Harry since instead, he destroyed the Horcrux inside Harry. Harry ended up going to a kind of in-between place, where he meets Dumbledore and Voldemort is temporarily knocked out as well.

Harry is also still somewhat protected by his mothers love for him. And this is all Voldemorts own doing. When he was rebuilding his body during Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, he used Harrys blood to do so. Therefore, he took some of Lilys protection into himself.

Why Did Voldemort Kill Harry Potters Parents? Fiction ...

In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Voldemort furthers his quest for ultimate power. He disposes of the Minister for Magic and replaces him with Pius Thicknesse, who is under the Imperius Curse. Establishing a totalitarianpolice state, he has Muggle-borns persecuted and arrested for stealing magic from the pure blood wizards. After failing to kill Harry with Dracos father Lucius Malfoys borrowed wand , he goes on a murderous search for the Elder Wand, the most powerful wand ever created, seeing it as the weapon he needs to overcome Harrys wand and make him truly invincible. He goes on a quest that takes him out of the country to Gregorovitchs wand shop, where he kills the old wandmaker. His journey also takes him to Nurmengard, the prison where Gellert Grindelwald is kept, and he kills Grindelwald as well. He finally locates the Elder Wand and steals it from Dumbledores tomb.

Rowling stated that after his death, Voldemort is forced to exist in the stunted infant-like form that Harry sees in the Kings Cross-like Limbo after his confrontation with Voldemort in the Forbidden Forest. Rowling also mentioned that, despite his extreme fear of death, he cannot become a ghost.

Why Did Voldemort Want To Kill Harry Himself

What was the big deal with Voldemort wanting to be the one to kill Harry Potter? Just pride, or was there something else?

He did not know about the last bit of the prophecy after all.

  • ValorumSep 16 17 at 22:06
  • It seems like a matter of pride and of proving to the world that he was more powerful. What strikes me as odd, is how intent he was on proclaiming his victory over Harry Potter, to the rest of the world, in the last book, but plotted a long-winding scheme to abduct Harry, kill him in secret and return to his body in the fourth book.

It Was Both A Matter Of Pride And Of Believing He’s Most Capable

The Dark Lord knew that there had been many mistakes with regard to trying to kill Harry Potter, and he knew he had made mistakes in his methods of trying to kill him. However, he was fairly sure he knew what he had done wrong, and that he knew how to fix it.

Again, Voldemort looked up at the slowly revolving body as he went on, I shall attend to the boy in person. There have been too many mistakes where Harry Potter is concerned. Some of them have been my own. That Potter lives is due more to my errors, than to his triumphs.

The company round the table watched Voldemort apprehensively, each of them, by his or her expression, afraid that they might be blamed for Harry Potters continued existence. Voldemort, however, seemed to be speaking more to himself than to any of them, still addressing the unconscious body above him.

I have been careless, and so have been thwarted by luck and chance, those wreckers of all but the best laid plans. But I know better now. I understand those things that I did not understand before. I must be the one to kill Harry Potter, and I shall be. – Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Chapter 1

He also wanted to do it himself to prove that he was stronger than Harry Potter.

He therefore didn’t want anyone else to kill Harry Potter and deprive him of this chance to show that he was indeed a stronger and more powerful wizard than Harry Potter, which he could not do if someone else was the one who killed Harry.

Why Didnt Harry Die As A Baby

Having overheard a prophecy by Professor Trelawney which foretold that a boy born in July would become his equal, Voldemort arrives at Godrics Hollow specifically to kill Harry Potter. First, he performs the Killing Curse on James Potter. But just as hes about to do the same to Harry, Lily steps in the way to protect her son and is killed by Voldemort. But that still leaves Harry vulnerable to a subsequent attack and while an attempt is made, it doesnt work, and instead, the Killing Curse backfires.

Harry is left with a rather impressive souvenir his infamous lightning bolt scar. Voldemort, on the other hand, is left without a body. Of course, we know that Voldemort leaves Harry with more than the lightning bolt, but well talk about that a bit later. So why doesnt Harry die from the Killing Curse? At the end of Sorcerers Stone, we learn from Dumbledore that Lily used a counter charm to protect Harry before Voldemort performed the Killing Curse on her, leaving her son with love-based protection.

The Real Reason Voldemort Wasnt The Worst Villain In Harry Potter

Why Voldemort Didn’t Kill Harry Immediately In The Graveyard

In the magical world of Harry Potter, its pretty clear from the very beginning that Voldemort , born Tom Marvolo Riddle, is the main antagonist. After trying to kill Harry Potter as a baby in order to overturn a prophecy that predicts Voldemort will fall at the infants hands, the Dark Lord spends the next decade in hiding. But, as his enemies predict, he comes back stronger than ever.

Throughout his time at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Harry the Boy Who Lived must wage war against Voldemort every single year. The ongoing feud culminates in his seventh and final year at Hogwarts when, at the young age of 17, Harry and his best friends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger set out to destroy Voldemorts Horcruxes, hunting pieces of the Dark wizards soul so that he can finally be killed once and for all.

Whether youve read the books a million times, watched the movies over and over again, or done both, you probably think that Voldemort is Harry Potters worst villain but you might be wrong about that. While Voldemort is a horrific, vindictive, and cruel mass murderer, theres someone arguably even worse than him: Professor Dolores Umbridge, played in the movies by Imelda Staunton. A high-ranking Ministry employee who will do anything for personal gain and professional development, Umbridge is the worst person in the Harry Potter series, particularly because she presents herself as a hero.

What Was Draco Malfoys Patronus

J.K. Rowling says Draco doesnt have a patronus because he never learned the spell but I think its because he doesnt have any powerful happy memories to use. For Umbridge it was necessary to learn to cast a Patronus as she works in the Ministry. Remember: the Ministry worked with Dementors at that time.

Theory: Voldemort Planned To Impersonate Harry

The aforementioned Tumblr user went on to explain a theory that expands on why that portkey could transport people to the graveyard and back to a specific spot at Hogwarts. This theory suggests that Voldemorts plan was to infiltrate Hogwarts by impersonating Harry Potter, and to achieve this, he needed some of his hair to brew a polyjuice potion. As for the rest of his body, it would have been Naginis dinner, as Voldemort often promised her.

Voldemort already had a spy at Hogwarts thanks to Barty Crouch Jr posing as Alastor Moody, who made the whole Triwizard Tournament plan possible in the first place by putting Harrys name in the Goblet of Fire and helping him get to the cup . Of course, this wasnt enough for the Dark Lord as he needed to get into Hogwarts himself, and he could have achieved this by posing as Harry Potter. The author of the theory shares that Voldemort would have gone back to Hogwarts as Harry thanks to the portkey and Crouch Jr would have taken his place later on. However, it would have been very risky for Voldemort to just ditch his cover while at Hogwarts, so the best they could have done was keep posing as Harry and Moody.

His Greatest Fear Was His Own Death

Boggarts are magical shape-shifters that transform into whatever a witch or wizard fears the most.

In a 2005 interview with the fan site Mugglenet, Rowling said that Voldemorts greatest fear is ignominious death, and if he ever encountered a boggart, he would probably see his own lifeless body.

Even without this insight, it is clear that Voldemort does everything in his power including fragmenting his soul seven times throughout the series to live up to his name and beat death.

A Timeline Of The Events

The Lead-up to the Attack

1978

Lily Evans and James Potter finish Hogwarts and immediately go to work for The Order of the Phoenix . Voldemort tried to recruit them to be Death Eaters , but both were defiant. Lily and James probably got married in the Summer or Fall of 1978, though it could have been as late as the summer of 1979.

Fall 1979

Sybill Trelawney makes a prophecy to Albus Dumbledore about a child to be born in July of that year. Partially overheard by a Death Eater, Severus Snape, who reports what he heard to Voldemort.

circa October 1979

Lily becomes pregnant with Harry, and both she and James go into hiding because of the prophecy .

Two children are born who fit the prophecys criteria: Harry Potter and Neville Longbottom. Dumbledore knows that they are in danger, but hesitates to act until he knows more about what Voldemort might do.

between July 31 and September 1, 1980

Severus Snape discovers that Lily and her infant son have been targeted by Voldemort, has a crisis of conscience, and tells Albus Dumbledore. Snape offers his allegiance to Dumbledore in exchange for protection for Lily and is given the position of Hogwarts Potions Master.

before October 24, 1981

Why Did Voldemort Want To Kill The Potters In The First Place

This may well be because Lily and James were some of Dumbledore’s most powerful and avid supporters as well as integral members of the Order of the Phoenix. So the biggest threat to V-Voldemort and his Order.

But why go through all the motions of murdering an entire family, even though they are cooped up in a hidden house and posing no immediate danger?

References preferred. But justified conjecture is also welcome.

Edit:I wrote this just after reading that Neville broke the prophecy. So I thought it might never be answered, which is why I asked the question.I now know the full reason.

  • 1I just wanted to point out the irony: the parents of Neville were Aurors and had defied Voldemort thrice as well. Now guess at the end of which month Neville was born: July. By going after Harry, Voldemort fulfilled the Prophecy with Harry as adversary, but Neville would have been in Harry’s place had Voldemort tried to kill Neville.Feb 21 ’14 at 12:27
  • bcuz, if it hadn’t been in that way, the story wouldn’t have progressed :)Feb 22 ’14 at 6:34
  • One word The Prophecy

There was this prophecy:

Sybill Trelawney’s first prophecy, sometimes simply known as The Prophecy, refers to the prophecy made by Sybill Trelawney to Albus Dumbledore at the Hog’s Head Pub in 1980. It referred to a boy born at the end of July, who has the power to defeat Lord Voldemort and Lord Voldemort himself.

Here is the exact prophecy:

Harry Potter And The Philosophers Stone

Why Didn’t Snape Kill Voldemort to Buy Time? – Harry Potter Explained

Professor QuirrellHarry Potter and the Philosophers Stone

Voldemort makes his debut in Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone. In this story, Rowling introduces him as the Dark Lord who tried to kill Harry Potter because the boy was prophesied to destroy him. Voldemort murdered Harrys parents, James and Lily, but as a result of his mothers love and willingness to sacrifice herself for him, baby Harry survived when Voldemort tried to murder him with a Killing Curse. Voldemort was disembodied, and Harry was left with a mysterious, lightning bolt-shaped scar on his forehead as a result.

In the book, Voldemort unsuccessfully tries to regain his dissolved body by stealing the titular Philosophers Stone. To achieve his objective, Voldemort uses Professor Quirrells aid by latching onto the back of the latters head. However, at the climax of the book, Harry manages to prevent Voldemort from stealing the stone.
