The Harry Potter books should be banned because the books are a great fantasy novel that will put ideas into children’s heads. Such as the MURDER or Harry’s parents, what happened to Jenny in the chamber of secrets, and not to mention the bad language. This is not a book that young children should be reading. I they want to read this book they should do it outside school where they won’t get distracted.

Riddikulus Why A Reverend Banned Harry Potter From A School Library

Expelliarmus! Such a simple word with such great power. It could have put Reverend Dan Reehil, a pastor at St Edward Catholic School, Nashville, at ease. The spell conjured up by J.K. Rowling and deftly wielded by the fictional boy wizard, Harry Potter, on many occasions if used successfully, can remove unwanted objects and disarm a person. But evidently the power of words some more so than others scares Mr Reehil. The pastor has thus unilaterally decided to ban the Harry Potter series from the school library. According to him, the curses and spells used in the books are actual curses and spells which when read by a human being risk conjuring evil spirits into the presence of the person reading the text. Riddikulus! Yet another spell that could have come to Mr Reehils aid it can expose the silliness that resides within monsters of the mind. Given his apparent aversion to magic, the pastor could even have turned to an English language teacher for some wisdom. Written in dog Latin classical-sounding constructions of English words, a favourite technique of the great bard himself these curses and spells have been decoded with ease by generations of young readers.

Harry Potter And The Banned Books

Even after 20 years, the famous series continues to be banned from schools and libraries. Heres why.

If you didnt already know, Banned Books Week 2019 is September 22nd 28th. Every year on the last week of September we celebrate the freedom to read whatever we want!

This years theme is Censorship Leaves Us in the Dark and were taking a look at one of the most frequently banned book series of all time: Harry Potter.

News. YA Book Reviews. Upcoming Releases. Monthly giveaways. Weekly. Free.

According to the American Library Association, Harry Potter was banned because the books promote witchcraft, set bad examples and are too dark.

Earlier this month, Bookstacked published an article of a Catholic school in Nashville, TN banning the popular series because parents believed the spells would actually summon evil spirits. However, J.K. Rowling came up with the spells using Latin and created her own spell-language. Another reason why Harry Potter was banned: Harry was a rule-breaker at school and this should not be a trait of a hero. What 11-year old, or any teen for that matter, is not some sort of rule breaker? Furthermore, Harrys rule-breaking helped the greater good in the end.

Harry Potter Stars Speak Out

Daniel Radcliffe who played Harry Potter led comments speaking out against Rowling’s statement.

“Jo is unquestionably responsible for the course my life has taken,” Radcliffe wrote in a statement published by The Trevor Project, an organisation that works in crisis prevention for LGBTQ youth. “As a human being, I feel compelled to say something at this moment Transgender women are women. Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people and goes against all advice given by professional health care associations who have far more expertise on this subject matter than either Jo or I.

“I am deeply sorry for the pain these comments have caused you. If these books taught you that love is the strongest force in the universe, capable of overcoming anything if they taught you that strength is found in diversity, and that dogmatic ideas of pureness lead to the oppression of vulnerable groups

“If you found anything in these stories that resonated with you and helped you at any time in your life then that is between you and the book that you read, and it is sacred. And in my opinion nobody can touch that.”

Finally, Grint also launched his own response in a statement.

“I firmly stand with the trans community. Trans women are women. Trans men are men. We should all be entitled to live with love and without judgment,” Grint said.

Christian Allegories In Deathly Hallows

Why Harry Potter Became The Most BANNED Book In America

Deathly Hallows begins with a pair of epigraphs, one by Quaker leader William Penn and one from AeschylusThe Libation Bearers. “I really enjoyed choosing those two quotations because one is pagan, of course, and one is from a Christian tradition”, Rowling said. “I’d known it was going to be those two passages since ‘Chamber’ was published. I always knew if I could use them at the beginning of book seven then I’d cued up the ending perfectly. If they were relevant, then I went where I needed to go. They just say it all to me, they really do.”

In her appraisal of the series, The Mystery of Harry Potter: A Catholic Family Guide, author Nancy Carpentier Brown writes:

After burying the remains of Mad-Eye Moody, Harry “marked the spot by gouging a small cross in the bark with his wand.” Now, if they were true Wiccans, wouldn’t he have gouged a pentagram? When Harry finally has the chance to face Voldemort and possibly kill him, Harry pauses and offers Voldemort a chance, saying, “Show some remorse.” … Giving a person a chance to redeem themselves, to begin to realise your own sins, by showing remorse, shows a Christian theme to the story.

Rowling And The Inklings

Several Christian writers have compared Rowling to the Inklings, a group that included C. S. Lewis, J. R. R. Tolkien, and Charles Williams, who explored Christian themes and morality in a fantasy context. Dave Kopel, citing John Granger’s book, draws comparisons between Rowling’s and Lewis’s common usage of Christian symbols, such as lions, unicorns and stags. He compares the work to Lewis’s Christian allegory: “In the climax of Chamber of Secrets, Harry descends to a deep underworld, is confronted by two satanic minions , is saved from certain death by his faith in Dumbledore , rescues the virgin , and ascends in triumph. It’s Pilgrim’s Progress for a new audience.”

“I did not set out to convert anyone to Christianity,” she told Time in 2007 “I wasn’t trying to do what C. S. Lewis did. It is perfectly possible to live a very moral life without a belief in God, and I think it’s perfectly possible to live a life peppered with ill-doing and believe in God.”

As regards Tolkien, Rowling said in 2000 that “I didn’t read The Hobbit until after the first Harry book was written, though I read Lord of the Rings when I was nineteen. I think, setting aside the obvious fact that we both use myth and legend, that the similarities are fairly superficial. Tolkien created a whole new mythology, which I would never claim to have done. On the other hand, I think I have better jokes.”

How it works

A differing perspective would be that of Billy Ray Counts, a library committee member, and his wife Mary Nell Counts who were parents of Dakota Counts in the Arkansas Cedarville Schools District. In their April 22, 2003 case, The Counts v. Cedarville School District brought suit pursuant to 42 U.S.C. ?§ 1983, alleging that their rights under the First and Fourteenth Amendments to the United States Constitution were being abridged by the decision of the defendant, Cedarville School District, to restrict the access of students, including Dakota Counts, to certain books in defendants library . The school board had voted 3-2 that students needed parent permission to check-out the Harry Potter books after a committee had already voted 15-0 to reject the complaint of parent, Angie Haney, that focused on the Harry Potter books introducing children to witchcraft and sorcery and disrespect for adults . U.S. District Judge Hendren overturned the school board decision by ordering the district to make the books available in the school libraries for general circulation. Secular Humanism It could be argued the Harry Potter series promotes secular humanism. Secular humanism, as defined by the Council for Secular Humanism , is a comprehensive, nonreligious life stance incorporating: a naturalistic philosophy, a cosmic outlook rooted in science, and consequentialist ethical system.

What Is The Theme Of To Kill A Mockingbird Essay

One of the most important themes in To Kill a Mockingbird is the conflict between good and evil. The writer deals with the idea of good and evil by highlighting the transition of Jem and Scout from the perspective of innocence. They believe that people are good because they do not realize the evil side of human nature.

The Trouble With Magic

Parents complained of priest who banned Harry Potter books

One school to ban Harry Potter was St. Mary’s Island Church of England school in Chatham, Kent. Head teacher Carol Rockwood explained that “The Bible is very clear and consistent in its teachings that wizards, devils and demons exist and are very real, powerful and dangerous and God’s people are told to have nothing to do with them.” She added that “I believe it is confusing to children when something wicked is being made to look fun.”

Rockwood is not alone. Her opinion is shared by others who believe that real witchcraft exists, and that all witches are evil. They fear that any books which have good witches or good magic?like the Harry Potter series?will lead people not to take the threat of real witchcraft seriously, and possibly lead them to take the Bible’s teachings in general more lightly. They might even lead readers to become witches themselves.

Others disagree. Some point out that Harry Potter is a fantasy, not a true story, and claim that even children know the difference between the two. Whether or not there is such a thing as evil magic in real life, it has nothing at all to do with the made-up spells and potions found in the books. As an editorial in Christian Century put it, “…critics are right in thinking that fantasy writing is powerful and needs to be taken seriously. But we strongly doubt that it fosters an attachment to evil powers. Harry’s world, in any case, is a moral one.”

Occult Vs Fantasy And Fairytale Magic

Regardless, statements such as those in Witchcraft Repackaged that the books depict actual occultist practices of any kind have been roundly criticised. Christian writer Stephen D. Greydanus writes that the magic of the Harry Potter novels is not the ritualistic, invocative magic of Wicca or occultism but the same “fantasy” magic practised in the works of J. R. R. Tolkien and C. S. Lewis “If anything, the magic in Rowling’s world is even more emphatically imaginary, even further removed from real-world practices, than that of Tolkien or Lewis and, like theirs, presents no appreciable risk of direct imitative behaviour.”Christianity Today columnist Charles Colson asserts that the magic in Harry Potter is “purely mechanical, as opposed to occultic. That is, Harry and his friends cast spells, read crystal balls, and turn themselves into animalsâbut they don’t make contact with a supernatural world. the kind of real-life witchcraft the Bible condemns.” Austin Cline notes that, “The Harry Potter books simply aren’t about Wicca as it is currently practiced. J.K. Rowling researched Wiccan practices and incorporated a few elements in order to give her books a bit more of an air of reality, but she and Wicca are drawing upon the same corpus of ancient traditions and stories so similarities are inevitable. They certainly aren’t a sign that the books work to “indoctrinate” people into Wicca as a religion.”

Setting A Bad Example

#HPDebate~Why Sorting Should Be Banned

Some people find the Harry Potter books to be inappropriate reading because of the way Harry and his friends behave. Some note that Harry “lies, breaks rules, and disobeys authority figures, including the professors at Hogwarts,” and that he ends up being rewarded and praised for his actions. They feel that heroes should be entirely good people who do as they’re told and respect others.

Others feel that Harry’s rule infractions are part of a long tradition in storytelling. A bit of rule-bending is necessary to get to a story outside of the ordinary, they say, but children can understand that behavior that makes a good story is different from behavior that’s good in general. They also point out that Harry’s rule-breaking does not go without any punishment. And some note, as Mike Hertenstein does in his review of the first Potter film, that “much of Harry’s rule-breaking… involves the principle of disobeying a lower law to keep a higher one?not to say he’s Rosa Parks, but who could criticize Harry’s violation of the no-fly rule to broom his way over a bully and stand up for his friends?”

Finally, some believe that even heroes aren’t perfect Harry and his friends may do some things wrong, but they are positive role models on the whole, working selflessly for all that’s good and noble.
