Expelliarmus! Such a simple word with such great power. It could have put Reverend Dan Reehil, a pastor at St Edward Catholic School, Nashville, at ease. The spell conjured up by J.K. Rowling and deftly wielded by the fictional boy wizard, Harry Potter, on many occasions if used successfully, can remove unwanted objects and disarm a person. But evidently the power of words some more so than others scares Mr Reehil. The pastor has thus unilaterally decided to ban the Harry Potter series from the school library. According to him, the curses and spells used in the books are actual curses and spells which when read by a human being risk conjuring evil spirits into the presence of the person reading the text. Riddikulus! Yet another spell that could have come to Mr Reehils aid it can expose the silliness that resides within monsters of the mind. Given his apparent aversion to magic, the pastor could even have turned to an English language teacher for some wisdom. Written in dog Latin classical-sounding constructions of English words, a favourite technique of the great bard himself these curses and spells have been decoded with ease by generations of young readers.

According to the American Library Association, Harry Potter was banned because the books promote witchcraft, set bad examples and are too dark.
Earlier this month, Bookstacked published an article of a Catholic school in Nashville, TN banning the popular series because parents believed the spells would actually summon evil spirits. However, J.K. Rowling came up with the spells using Latin and created her own spell-language. Another reason why Harry Potter was banned: Harry was a rule-breaker at school and this should not be a trait of a hero. What 11-year old, or any teen for that matter, is not some sort of rule breaker? Furthermore, Harrys rule-breaking helped the greater good in the end.

Harry Potter Stars Speak Out
Daniel Radcliffe who played Harry Potter led comments speaking out against Rowling’s statement.
“Jo is unquestionably responsible for the course my life has taken,” Radcliffe wrote in a statement published by The Trevor Project, an organisation that works in crisis prevention for LGBTQ youth. “As a human being, I feel compelled to say something at this moment Transgender women are women. Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people and goes against all advice given by professional health care associations who have far more expertise on this subject matter than either Jo or I.
“I am deeply sorry for the pain these comments have caused you. If these books taught you that love is the strongest force in the universe, capable of overcoming anything if they taught you that strength is found in diversity, and that dogmatic ideas of pureness lead to the oppression of vulnerable groups
“If you found anything in these stories that resonated with you and helped you at any time in your life then that is between you and the book that you read, and it is sacred. And in my opinion nobody can touch that.”
Finally, Grint also launched his own response in a statement.
“I firmly stand with the trans community. Trans women are women. Trans men are men. We should all be entitled to live with love and without judgment,” Grint said.

Harry Potter Challenged In Georgia
Harry Potter continues to face challenges in public school systems. Most often, this challenges are brought by conservative Christian parents who are concerned that the book contains “witchcraft”, i.e., wizards and witches, magic, and sorcery.

One school to ban Harry Potter was St. Mary’s Island Church of England school in Chatham, Kent. They fear that any books which have good witches or good magic?like the Harry Potter series?will lead people not to take the threat of real witchcraft seriously, and possibly lead them to take the Bible’s teachings in general more lightly. They might even lead readers to become witches themselves.
Others disagree. Some point out that Harry Potter is a fantasy, not a true story, and claim that even children know the difference between the two. Whether or not there is such a thing as evil magic in real life, it has nothing at all to do with the made-up spells and potions found in the books. As an editorial in Christian Century put it, “…critics are right in thinking that fantasy writing is powerful and needs to be taken seriously. But we strongly doubt that it fosters an attachment to evil powers. Harry’s world, in any case, is a moral one.”

They feel that heroes should be entirely good people who do as they’re told and respect others.

They also point out that Harry’s rule-breaking does not go without any punishment. Finally, some believe that even heroes aren’t perfect Harry and his friends may do some things wrong, but they are positive role models on the whole, working selflessly for all that’s good and noble.
