Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban

The third book in the series introduces Sirius Black, a deranged mass murderer whos just escaped from the wizard prison of Azkaban. As a result, swarms of Dementors dark, faceless beings that suck the soul out of their victims and serve as the guards of Azkaban infiltrate Hogwarts to patrol for Black, whos supposedly after Harry next. To make matters worse, our normally steadfast hero has a bad reaction to the Dementors, which cause him to faint on a train and even lose a critical Quidditch match.

Again, though, its not all doom and gloom. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban also features Professor Remus Lupin, the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher and a school friend of Harrys late father. Lupin and Harry quickly forge a father-son-like relationship themselves, and Lupin teaches Harry the Patronus Charm to protect himself from Dementors.

Meanwhile, Ron and Hermione are squabbling even more than usual over their respective pets, Crookshanks the cat and Scabbers the rat. But what seems like a lighthearted subplot turns out to be a major factor in one of the biggest twists of the series, revealed in the last few chapters and which naturally involves Black and Lupin as well. Oh, and hippogriffs and time traveling, in case that wasnt enough to sell you on it.

Harry Potter And The Sorcerer’s Stone

It all started in 1997. J.K. Rowling wrote Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone about a young boy who learns that his parents were wizards, and he is invited to study at the wizarding school of Hogwarts, the same school that trained his parents.

The United States changed the name of the novel to Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone and introduced the world to Harry and his young friends, as well as the amazing world of wizards at the British school. The book won several awards and sat on top of the New York Times bestseller list for most of 1999 and 2000.

Us Publication And Reception

Scholastic Corporation bought the U.S. rights at the Bologna Book Fair in April 1997 for US$105,000, an unusually high sum for a children’s book. Scholastic’s Arthur Levine thought that “philosopher” sounded too archaic for readers and after some discussion , the American edition was published in September 1998 under the title Rowling suggested, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. Rowling later said that she regretted this change and would have fought it if she had been in a stronger position at the time.Philip Nel has pointed out that the change lost the connection with alchemy and the meaning of some other terms changed in translation, for example from “crumpet” to “muffin“. While Rowling accepted the change from both the British English “mum” and Seamus Finnigan’s Irish variant “mam” to the American variant “mom” in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, she vetoed this change in the later books, which was then reversed in later editions of Philosopher’s Stone. However, Nel considered that Scholastic’s translations were considerably more sensitive than most of those imposed on British English books of the time and that some other changes could be regarded as useful copyedits. Since the UK editions of early titles in the series were published months prior to the American versions, some American readers became familiar with the British English versions owing to having bought them from online retailers.

Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix gets political in big way: despite Voldemorts revival at the end of GoF, the Ministry of Magic continues to deny all rumors and refuse to take action, worried that theyll upset the public. This means the real adults have to take a leaf out of Harry, Ron, and Hermiones book and start fighting him themselves, through an underground vigilante group called the Order of the Phoenix.

But the Order cant do much about Dolores Umbridge, the newly instated and highly sadistic Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher at Hogwarts, who perpetuates the Ministrys lies about Voldemort. When Harry openly defies her in class, she retaliates by giving him chronic detention during which he must write lines with a blood quill that carves the words into the back of his hand. Despite this torment, he and the rest of the class do not acquiesce to Umbridge, and establish a secret defense organization for themselves called Dumbledores Army.

On top of all that, Harry keeps having frequent, harrowing visions of Voldemort when hes asleep, and must take Occlumency lessons with Professor Snape to prevent them. This is a different kind of torture, with Snape forcing entry into Harrys private memories at every lesson and relishing the opportunity to cause him pain. Of course, Snapes own twisted motivations are revealed when Harry gains access to his memories one of which is a bitter altercation with Harrys father.

Awards Honours And Recognition

The Harry Potter series has been recognised by a host of awards since the initial publication of Philosopher’s Stone including a platinum award from the Whitaker Gold and Platinum Book Awards , three Nestlé Smarties Book Prizes , two Scottish Arts Council Book Awards , the inaugural Whitbread children’s book of the year award , the WHSmith book of the year , among others. In 2000, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban was nominated for a Hugo Award for Best Novel, and in 2001, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire won said award. Honours include a commendation for the Carnegie Medal , a short listing for the Guardian Children’s Award , and numerous listings on the notable books, editors’ Choices, and best books lists of the American Library Association, The New York Times, Chicago Public Library, and Publishers Weekly.

Uses In Education And Business

Writers on education and business subjects have used the book as an object lesson. Writing about clinical teaching in medical schools, Jennifer Conn contrasted Snape’s technical expertise with his intimidating behaviour towards students. Quidditch coach Madam Hooch on the other hand, illustrated useful techniques in the teaching of physical skills, including breaking down complex actions into sequences of simple ones and helping students to avoid common errors. Joyce Fields wrote that the books illustrate four of the five main topics in a typical first-year sociology class: “sociological concepts including culture, society, and socialisation stratification and social inequality social institutions and social theory“.

Stephen Brown noted that the early Harry Potter books, especially Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, were a runaway success despite inadequate and poorly organised marketing. Brown advised marketing executives to be less preoccupied with rigorous statistical analyses and the “analysis, planning, implementation, and control” model of management. Instead he recommended that they should treat the stories as “a marketing masterclass”, full of enticing products and brand names. For example, a real-world analogue of Bertie Bott’s Every Flavour Beans was introduced under licence in 2000 by toymaker Hasbro.

First Edition Harry Potter Book Sells For 350000

One of the first ever printed editions of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone has sold for over £350,000!

That’s more than the cost of the average house in the UK.

First editions of popular books like this one are very rare, and this copy attracted a lot of interest at an auction in the United States.

Heritage Auctions described the book as being “near pristine” – which means it looked almost brand new – and said only 500 copies existed in the world with its specific binding.

Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix Signed 1st Edition

The second entry on this list refers to the fifth installment of the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter And The Order of The Phoenix. It’s for sale at AbeBooks, and it currently comes with a hefty price tag of almost $6,000.

The copy is a first United Kingdom edition, first published in 2003, in hardback. In addition to its rarity as a first edition, this book also includes JK Rowling’s signature on the cover. Pretty neat!

Robbie Coltrane Dead: Harry Potter Actor Was 72

Robbie Coltrane, the Scottish character actor who became beloved by a generation of moviegoers as Hagrid in the Harry Potter franchise of films, has died, according to a statement from his agency, WMA. He was 72 years old. Prior to Harry Potter, the star had a memorable role as Valentin Dmitrovich Zukovsky in the James Bond films GoldenEye and The World Is Not Enough. In addition to his big-screen work, Coltrane was a comedian and writer who starred in 25 stories over 13 years as the cantankerous but brilliant police consultant Dr. Edward ‘Fitz’ Fitzgerald on the British detective series Cracker. He earned three consecutive BAFTA best actor trophies for the series.

No cause of death has yet been named. Coltrane has been confined to a wheelchair since 1999 due to severe osteoarthritis pain, and appeared only seated during January’s Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts on HBO Max.

In that special, Coltrane reflected on the power of storytelling, and his own mortality. He teared up as he told the crew, “The legacy of the movies is that my children’s generation will show them to their children ….So you could be watching it in 50 year’s time, easily. I’ll not be here, sadly — but Hagrid will, yes.”

Coltrane was born Anthony Robert McMillan on March 30, 1950, in Glasgow, Scotland. After graduating from Glasgow Art School, he studied art at Moray House College of Education in Edinburgh.

Response Within The Harry Potter Fandom

The response to the play from the Harry Potterfandom was polarizing.Fans responded positively to the play and its characters, with Scorpius Malfoy being particularly popular. Some fans commented that the dialogue between the familiar characters was “spot on”, celebrating it as a faithful continuation of the books. Others have noted that the play sheds light on some of the relationships between the characters, such as Harry and Dumbledore’s. The response had been particularly positive among fans who watched the play on stage.

Some fans, however, said the story seemed more “like a work of fan fiction” and said that it diverged from previously established rules of the universe, criticising the script’s characterisation. Some also took issue with the style and plot of the script, complaining that the Time-Turner storylines had already been used, as had Cedric Diggory’s death, and that the writers were rehashing old storylines and over-played tropes of the fantasy/sci-fi genre.
