How Did Jk Rowling Impact The Lives Of Others

How Harry Potter Changed My Life

J.K. Rowling supports a number of causes through her charitable trust, Volant. She is also the founder and president of the international childrens non-profit organization Lumos, which works to end the institutionalization of children globally and ensure all children grow up in a safe and caring environment.

It Gave Me The Courage To Always Strive To Do What Is Right Regardless Of Anyone Else’s Opinion

My childhood was pretty Dursley-ish: My parents used me for chores and manual labor without much thanks or love in return. I first read Harry Potter when I was 12, and immediately fell in love. Here was a boy who could have all this bad shit happen to him, and he still rose above evil and oppression to do what was right for others and save the entire Wizarding World.

I was raised in a pretty religious family, and we no longer have anything to do with one another since I’m openly lesbian and married to a woman. Harry Potter taught me that it’s OK to make your own family and surround yourself with people that truly love and care about you. The lessons of friendship, bravery, and loyalty are ones I still carry as the basis for my beliefs and passions today. This series gave me the courage to always strive to do what is right, regardless of anyone else’s opinion. Statistics say I should never have made it out of my small town, and that I shouldn’t have accomplished much in my life. Harry Potter is the reason I overcame those statistics and am pursuing my doctoral degree in education, and it continuously shapes the way I interact with my students. Many of them are cupboard-under-the-stairs kids, and I do my best to use my experiences and Harry’s as a basis for understanding and overcoming life’s hardships.

Luna Was Exceptionally Kind And Smart But Also Wasn’t Afraid Of Who She Was She Was Everything I Wanted To Be

I started reading the Harry Potter books in middle school and, like most of us out there, it was a rough three years for me. What helped me get through it and many other difficult times in my life since was Luna Lovegood. Luna was the first character I had encountered in my literary journey that was not only exceptionally kind and smart, but also wasn’t afraid of who she was. I was a closeted bisexual 13-year-old girl with no friends, and she was everything I wanted to be. She got way more crap from her classmates than most kids, and still retained a calm demeanour and a pleasant smile on her face.

Why Adults Got So Obsessed With The Harry Potter Books

A 2012 study found that 55 percent of YA novels are bought by adults. In large part, that boom is courtesy of Harry Potter, which became a surprise crossover hit adored by both children and adults, and which made it acceptable for adults to read books that are ostensibly for children.

For some critics, thats a worrisome development, suggesting that adults are too dull and stupid to appreciate books actually written for adults. But there are plenty of reasons for a grown person to enjoy Harry Potter.

The Harry Potter books combine the intricate plotting of a mystery with the sweep and scope of epic fantasy and the intimacy and character development of a classic boarding school narrative. The result is purely pleasurable to read at any age: The puzzlebox mystery plotting keeps the pages turning propulsively forward, the fantastic mythology gives the world scope and magic and joy, and the boarding school structure makes the characters warm and familiar and charming. It also makestheir eventual death and trauma deeply affecting.

Its true that Rowlings prose is best described as workmanlike and competent if the reasonyou read is solely to enjoy perfectly balanced and polished sentences, you may be best served elsewhere. But if you are an adult who can imagine reading for more than one reason , the Harry Potter books become enormously appealing.

Different Shades Of Emotions

Harry Potter and the train ride that changed my life # ...

Each book showed me different shades of emotions, it made me realise different faces of emotions and how important they are in life. It taught me the importance of happiness, sadness, anger, fear, anxiety, trust and anticipation in life, how sometimes life asks you to feel sad and lonely, happy and excited, scared and anxious, hopeful and bright, broken and angry, and you have to do it. It taught me how to balance these emotions and live the most of them.

The Making Of Harry Potter

In March 2011, Warner Bros. announced plans to build a tourist attraction in the United Kingdom to showcase the Harry Potter film series. The Making of Harry Potter is a behind-the-scenes walking tour featuring authentic sets, costumes and props from the film series. The attraction is located at Warner Bros. Studios, Leavesden, where all eight of the Harry Potter films were made. Warner Bros. constructed two new sound stages to house and showcase the famous sets from each of the British-made productions, following a £100 million investment. It opened to the public in March 2012.

How I Sympathized With Draco Malfoy And Severus Snape

I dont know why I fan over the bad boys in literature. Draco Malfoy and Professor Snape are my all time favorite character villains. For one we all know that throughout the books and movie series that Draco has some father issues. He always wants to be acknowledged by his dad. The fact that they are pure blood, gives him supposed status over others. But as I watched my favorite books come to life, I could see that deep down Draco wasnt this persona he put on. Sure he may genuinely despise Harry, but it came from a place where his father would place high expectations on him to be the best. He was competing with Harry his whole life.

Lets not forget the Half Blood Prince! Snape I sympathized with as well because of his part in Harrys destiny. He had to babysit Harry behind the scenes in unexpected ways. The fact that his true love Lily Potter married someone else and had a child, now he must protect him. His dedication to the boy, although he was cruel, was through his love for Lily. He isnt the cold hearted arse everyone thinks he is. I was gob-smacked when the big reveal of Dumbledores plan and Snapes part in it was revealed in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. Snape is a great example of the things we do for love.

The Journey Of A Harry Potter Fan

On New Years Eve 2000, I was 11-years-old, and driving back home on a road trip with my parents and siblings. My older sister had been pushing a book on me for the last few days that I just didnt want to read. But trapped in a car with nothing else to do, I took the book and started reading.

Mr and Mrs Dursley, of number four Privet Drive were proud to say that they were perfectly normal, thank you very much.

And with those words, my life was changed. I entered the world of Harry Potter.

Over the next few years, as each book was released, I had to patiently wait for my older sister to finish reading the book so I could then enjoy it! Luckily, she reads quite fast, so I usually had the book within a day! When the first movie came out, I begged my mother to make me a cape to wear to the cinemas. We raced home from school the day that the movie was released, quickly got changed into my fabulous homemade cape and rushed to our local cinema. I didnt want to miss out on a good seat! We were first in line, three hours before the movie started. This is, of course, in the days before mobile phones, so waiting time was spent reading Harry and discussing Harry. And the wait was worth it the first movie exceeded all my expectations.

Its Important To Believe In Yourself

Believing that you can achieve something is a key to success. Ron taught us this important lesson during his Quidditch match, when he thought he had Harrys liquid luck. As it turned out, he didnt have it he was a champion all on his own. He played well just because he thought he would and felt confident. Believing in yourself and thinking positively puts you in the mindset to succeed!

Why Hermoine Is My Favorite Harry Potter Character

Watching the first Harry Potter installment I felt that girls can be beautiful and brainy. When Hermoine enthusiastically raised her hand in Professor Snapes classroom, it made me feel less alone. I would be shy sometimes in class. Being in fifth grade, knowing the answers to homework wasnt considered the popular characteristic. So when she was able to show her interest in reading and being knowledgeable of the wizarding world, I felt that as a young girl I could do anything.

How Love And Hate Are Tangled With Each Other

Even though love and faith are poles apart from each other, they both are always tangled with each other. There cannot be love without hatred and there cannot be any hatred without love. Both of them flow close to each other and sometimes, life will put in situations where we will have to face both. Harry has been in such situations many times and so have we — it is just that we never realised it.

Harry Potter Fandom Also Paved The Way For The Mainstreaming Of Fandom And Geek Culture

How the Harry Potter series changed my life

Harry Potter has a tremendously outsized cultural reach: One 2011 survey suggested that a third of all American adults ages 18 to 34 at the time had read at least one of the books. But what really makes Harry Potter stand out is the way people loved Harry Potter.

First and foremost, the series helped make it cool to be a geek. People generally didnt read the Harry Potter books in isolation they wanted to talk about it with their friends, and then find more friends who loved the books as much as they did. This pattern coincided with the rise of Web 2.0 that is, an increasingly interactive and social internet. As more Harry Potter fans became more active online, they made discussion of YA fiction, fantasy, and science fiction seem commonplace.

And Harry Potter fans creativity is still being felt in and outside of the fandom. In the early 2000s, Harry Potter fan forums, fanfiction and fan art archives, and email discussion groups exploded across the internet. Harry Potter conventions drew thousands of fans, and Harry Potter cosplay became a well-known sight at larger geek and comic cons.

A number of Harry Potter fans also went on to make significant marks on mainstream culture. As a member of the University of Michigan theater troupe Starkid, a young Darren Criss starred as Harry Potter in the viral YouTube video A Very Potter Musical, and his popularity catapulted him into the role of Blaine on Glee and a career on Broadway.

My Mom Used Dumbledore’s Lines To Explain To Me Age 11 That She Wouldn’t Be Recovering From Her Cancer

Harry Potter provided and continues to provide emotional support during the hardest times of my life. My mom got me the first two books after she read a review of Chamber of Secrets while she was at chemotherapy, and everyone in my family became devoted to them. A few years later, she used Dumbledore’s lines “You think the dead we loved ever truly leave us?” to explain to me, age 11, that she wouldn’t be recovering from her cancer. She passed away shortly after that.

Not only did I love to read Harry Potter as an escape from a devastating and confusing time, but because I felt like Harry and I understood each other. Maybe in some way we were both boys who lived. Now I’m in my late twenties and the memories I have of my mother have faded a lot. When I read Harry Potter, the gift she gave to me, I feel connected to her and that she, like Lily Potter, never really left me. I don’t think I can ever thank J.K. Rowling enough for something so precious.

I Made My First Friends Bonding Over A Mutual Obsession Those Women Are People I Still Love And Care About Very Much

I was always the most awkward kid. Just a small, overimaginative little weirdo who had trouble connecting with people and following social conventions. I made my first friends bonding over a mutual obsession with Harry Potter. We had a Harry Potter club. We wrote our own versions of the Daily Prophet, made chocolate frogs out of Tootsie Rolls, had Harry Potter-themed birthday parties, and dressed like witches for god knows how many Halloweens. When one of us got a newly released book before the others, we would call each other and read it over the phone. Those women are people I still love and care about very much.

Harry Potter was a huge part of growing up for me and, in bad times, I’d sneak off with the book and escape reality for a little bit. The fantasy and magic of it all help me cope with clinical depression, and to this day you’ll still catch me reading a 20-year-old book written for children.

How Jk Rowling Broke The Barriers Of The Publishing World Like A Badass

Harry Potters Popularity Completely Changed The Publishing Industry And The Effect Spilled Over To Hollywood

Harry Potter Changed My Life. – Tea With Hagrid

Here are just two of the ways Harry Potter changed publishing, and how those changes affected the rest of pop culture:

1) The books made it possible to publish long works aimed at children. Prior to Harry Potter, the accepted wisdom was that kids didnt have the attention span to read long books. And anyway, the thinking went, kids werent buying their own books. Their parents were paying for everything, and they would never be willing to pay an extra dollar or two for a longer book, with its extra printing and binding.

But after Harry Potter became an unstoppable cultural force, and it was clear that fans would keep buying thebooks no matter what, it started to expand. The last four volumes of the series are all doorstoppers that clock in at well over 700 pages each.

Publishers and childrens writers took notice. Booklist found that middle-grade novels expanded 115.5 percent between 2006 and 2016, the decade in which the Potter novels were at their longest.

The Outsiders reinvented young adult fiction. Harry Potter made it inescapable.

2) Harry Potter made childrens literature an unstoppable force. Before Harry Potter, childrens literature was often considered an afterthought. Sales were falling. Children, analysts would say wistfully, just werent reading anymore.
