When She Spoke To Harry About Grief

Why Luna Lovegood Is The Most Important Character From Harry Potter

Loss and grief are very difficult concepts to grasp no matter your age. Having lost both his parents and Sirius, Harry was no stranger to it. There werent many his age who could fully understand what that was like. Luna could. Not only that, but she spoke about loss in a way that was wise, intelligent, measured and quite surprising for a teenager.

Anyway… why arent you at the feast?

Harry shrugged. Just didnt feel like it.

No, said Luna, observing him with those oddly misty, protuberant eyes. I dont suppose you do. That man the Death Eaters killed was your godfather, wasnt he? Ginny told me.

Harry nodded curtly, but found that for some reason he did not mind Luna talking about Sirius. He had just remembered that she, too, could see Thestrals.

Have you… he began. I mean, who… has anyone you known ever died?

Yes, said Luna simply, my mother. She was a quite extraordinary witch, you know, but she did like to experiment and one of her spells went rather badly wrong one day. I was nine.

Im sorry, Harry mumbled.

Yes, it was rather horrible, said Luna conversationally. I still feel very sad about it sometimes. But Ive still got Dad. And anyway, its not as though Ill never see Mum again, is it?Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

She Saved The Weasleys

Well, not all the Weasleys, but Ron and Ginny. In the Order of the Phoenix book, Harry and his friends travel to the Ministry of Magic to rescue Sirius after their attempts to locate him fail. Once there, a fight with Death Eaters breaks out and, at one point, it looks like Ron and Ginny are destined to bite the dust.

Fortunately, because of Luna, the pair live to fight another day. She protects Ron while he’s in a dazed and confused state and fights a Death Eater closing in on Ginny after they’d seized her ankle. Luna casts a Reductor Curse so powerful it destroys a nearby model of the planet Pluto. A small price to pay, we think…

Directing Harry To Ravenclaw’s Diadem

While Luna doesn’t get a lot of screen time in the final movie, she actually proves invaluable in the quest to defeat Voldemort. By the time Harry returns to Hogwarts, he is aware that there is a Horcrux within the school but doesn’t know what the Horcrux is. After Harry’s rather vague description to the members of Dumbeldore’s Army, it is Luna who steps forward and suggests that the Horcrux maybe Ravenclaw’s Lost Diadem.

Many of the other students don’t take Luna’s suggestion seriously but it does prove to be correct. Luna is also able to stand up to Harry when he refuses to listen to her later on which is the only time she really raises her voice in the series. Luna’s advice here proves paramount in the eventual defeat of Voldemort.

Her Ingenious Solutions To Problems

When Harry believed Sirius was in danger, he desperately tried to think of a way to get to the Ministry of Magic to rescue him. Yet he and everyone else he was with drew a blank. It was Luna who used her creative and out of the box thinking to come up with a solution. We doubt it would ever have crossed Harry, Ron or Hermiones minds

Well, it doesnt matter, anyway, said Harry frustratedly, because we still dont know how to get there

I thought wed settled that, said Luna maddeningly. Were flying!

Look, said Ron, barely containing his anger, you might be able to fly without a broomstick but the rest of us cant sprout wings whenever we

There are ways of flying other than with broomsticks, said Luna serenely.

I spose were going to ride on the back of the Kacky Snorgle or whatever it is? Ron demanded.

The Crumple-Horned Snorkack cant fly, said Luna in a dignified voice, but they can, and Hagrid says theyre very good at finding places their riders are looking for.

Harry whirled round. Standing between two trees, their white eyes gleaming eerily, were two Thestrals, watching the whispered conversation as though they understood every word.Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

Luna: They Went To Slughorn’s Party Together

Luna Lovegood

In Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Harry meets Professor Horace Slughorn for the first time and immediately catches the Potions Master’s attention. Slughorn inducts him into the Slug Club and invites him and a plus one to his extravagant Christmas party.

Despite Harry’s status amongst the girls at Hogwarts as the desirable Chosen One, Harry chooses to invite his friend Luna instead. He states that he prefers spending time with Luna, to the chagrin of Romilda Vane and her friends.

Luna And Neville Were Almost A Couple

Luna didnt really end up with anyone at the end of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows but there was oodles of chemistry between her and Neville . In the end this didnt amount to anything, but J.K. Rowling has revealed that they were almost an item.

She once told USA Today that she started to feel a bit of a pull between them but added that if they were together by the end it would have felt too neat. Additionally, she stated that Neville would always find Lunas wilder flights of fancy alarming, despite their close friendship. It would have been an adorable partnership, but Luna married someone else who was also pretty cool.

The Way She Shows More Maturity Than Many Of Her Peers

Teenagers can be cruel, and many were towards Luna. They called her names and teased her for her seemingly ditzy personality. And even though she shouldnt have had to put up with any of it, Luna managed to rise above and not let the criticism get to her. Ultimately, this made her seem much more mature and intelligent than those who were mean to her.

How come people hide your stuff? he asked her, frowning.

Oh… well… she shrugged. I think they think Im a bit odd, you know. Some people call me Loony Lovegood, actually.Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

The Sad Truth About Luna Lovegood That Harry Potter Fans Forget

The Wizarding World is full of eccentric characters. From the loveable Hagrid, with his passion for befriending and accumulating dangerous and exotic pets, and Professor Trelawney, with her unique fashion sense and mostly questionable prophetic abilities, to Slughorn, and his affinity to “collect” students for his Slug Club, there are many who bring a distinctive wonder to the Harry Potter universe. And there’s probably no character as eccentric and endearing as Luna Lovegood. Throughout the series, Luna proves she not only lives her life according to her own rules reading the Quibbler upside down, suspecting Nargles are behind her missing shoes but that she is also one of the few who remain a loyal and consistent ally to Harry Potter.

But, despite Luna living by her own standards and displaying unwavering loyalty, fans may forget that the Ravenclaw student has an unfortunate backstory, one that reveals a sad truth about her family. In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Harry stands in the forest with Luna , gazing at the Thestrals mythical winged horses standing nearby. She tells him they are gentle, but people avoid them because they are “different.” Harry wants to know why others can’t see them. “They can only be seen by people who have seen death,” Luna tells him, meaning she has lost someone close to her.

Who Did Evanna Lynch Play In Harry Potter

Evanna Lynch as Luna Lovegood in the HARRY POTTER movies ...

After making her debut in the fifth film, the 30-year-old actress became a staple of the series and went on to star in the final three films – The Half Blood Prince and The Deathly Hallows – parts one and two.

She was cast in the film aged 14 after attending a casting call with 15,000 other girls and doing a screen test with Daniel Radcliffe.

Evanna also designed accessories for her character such as her hare-shaped bracelet and lion-head hat.

JK Rowling later said in an interview that Evanna’s personality influenced how she wrote Luna in the final books of the series.

You Have To Fully Commit To The Madness

In 2017 and 2018, Lynch once again graced the stage. She starred in the Irish play Disco Pigs, in the role of Runt, opposite Colin Campbell in the role of Pig. The critically-acclaimed show started its run in London, then moved to the Irish Repertory Theatre in New York City. And as Lynch tells it, the show was fierce. “Until I did Disco Pigs I didn’t realise what an intense physical discipline theatre is,” she confessed in an interview with Schön! magazine. “I was constantly battered and bruised on that play.”

Even though the show was mentally and physically demanding, Lynch absolutely loved the experience, and grew from it immensely. “You just have to fully commit to the madness and let yourself feel your way through,” she continued. And even though she only got fully into the right head space during the last few months of the production, she found it “exhilarating,” and it changed how she approaches acting.

Beginnings And Harry Potter Series

In January 2006, Lynch auditioned at a casting call in London for the role of Luna Lovegood in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, the fifth film in the series adapted from the books. After auditioning against 15,000 other girls, and a subsequent screen test with lead actor Daniel Radcliffe, she was cast at age 14. Producers were impressed with her affinity for the character David Heyman said: “The others could play Luna Evanna Lynch is Luna.” Although uninvolved in the casting process, Rowling believed that Lynch was perfect for the role. She had never acted professionally before the Harry Potter series, her experience having been limited to school plays. While filming Harry Potter, Lynch also made and helped design a number of fashion accessories for her character.

Half-Blood Prince

Harry Potter author J. K. Rowling gave a speech during the premiere of Deathly Hallows Part 2 in London, where she stated that there were seven major cast members in the series, whom she referred to as “The Big Seven”, and she named Lynch as one of the seven members, along with Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, Emma Watson, Tom Felton, Matthew Lewis and Bonnie Wright. Rowling has maintained that, of all the actors in the film series, Lynch had the most influence on how the respective character was subsequently written in 2012, she told Charlie Rose that when writing the final books, “I saw her. got in my head. I even heard her voice when I was writing Luna.”

Saving Harry On The Hogwarts At Express

At the beginning of The Half-Blood Prince, Luna is handing out Quibblers in another one of her unusual outfits, complete with her iconic Spectrespecs. As the students are leaving the train, Harry is attacked by Draco and left stunned under his invisibility cloak. Harry was all set for a long and uncomfortable trip back to London until Luan came to his aid.

It’s ironic that Luna is able to save Harry after seeing wrackspurts through the Spectrespecs. Luna’s stories of strange creatures are often laughed off by those around her but after seeing wrackspurts swarming around Harry, she’s able to save him – and even fixes his nose for good measure.

Why Was Luna Good For Gryffindor In Harry Potter

Introducing Luna Lovegood | Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

Luna is definitely someone who has a lot of insight and intelligence. Even though she might believe in some weird things because of her father, she can also think for herself. This is another main reason why Luna would have made a great Gryffindor. While Ravenclaws can also be good friends, they seem a little more individually-focused.

‘when I Read Things That Upset Me I Think That Gryffindor Hero Kicks In’ Lynch Said Of Why She’s Involved In Animal Rights Advocacy

“When I read things that upset me, I think that Gryffindor hero kicks in,” Lynch told Insider, referring to the experiments. “I can get very fiery and angry, but I strongly don’t believe that’s the most powerful place to do activism from.”

Insider reached out to a rep for Hopkins, but didn’t immediately hear back.

Lynch believes that “effective activism is about finding commonality rather than just placing blame and saying you’re on the wrong side.”

Although the 29-year-old actress can’t help but stand up for what she believes in, the same can’t be said about her “Harry Potter” character, she admitted.

“I always wondered about that would Luna have been an activist? Because she’s not a fiery character. She very much accepts the present moment and kind of seems to go with the flow,” Lynch said. “I don’t know how much good that would have done the animal rights movement.”
