Niantic also have a Transformers game called Transformers: Heavy Metal in the works, too.

AR games have had mixed success, however. While Pokémon Go still gets hundreds of millions of players a month, other AR game projects haven’t done so well. For example, Catan: World Explorers, only lasted a year before being shut down.

Microsoft also decided to pull the plug on its AR game Minecraft Earth earlier this year, to free up more ‘resources’ to put into the Minecraft community.

Ministry Id And Suitcase

The Ministry ID displays information about the player’s character. The player can customise their name and surname, title, Hogwarts House, profession, wand and wizarding achievements. Hogwarts Houses do not have an impact of the gameplay, other that changing the character’s robe colour.

The Suitcase is used to access the player’s information. It contains the following:

  • Vault, which contains potions, ingredients, utility and Runestones.
  • Profession, where the player can advance their character’s statistics. The current professions are Auror, Magizoologist and Professor. Each profession has access to different lessons which improve the character in different ways. Changing profession freely is permitted.
  • Potions, where you can brew up to four potions at the time, in either a standard or Goldcauldron.
  • Registry, where collected Foundables appear.
  • Portkeys, were Portkeys are stored.

Improving On A Good Thing

Harry Potter: Wizards Unite

That spans from the game itself to the way that Niantic and WB Games got it ready for primetime.

“Everything from the way that we are preparing to launch it, the way that we are testing the infrastructure, the things that we’d added to ‘Pokémon Go’ over the last two and a half years to improve that product and address things that we felt like it needed,” have been reconsidered for the new game, Hanke said.

For instance: “Pokémon Go” only added social multiplayer features last year, after it began adding Pokémon trading and battling. “Wizards Unite,” however, lets you add friends right out of the box though, in these early days of the game, it’s not clear what benefits doing so confers.

There’s also the fact that “Wizards Unite” actually has a plot: Players are cast as investigators of the Great Calamity, where magical artifacts, creatures, and personages have been scattered across space and time. This is in very deliberate contrast to “Pokémon Go,” which mostly gives players little direction beyond “catch ’em all,” Hanke said.

“We found that that worked for a lot of people, but there were certainly people who wanted a little more structure to understand what to do next and to really measure their progress, so there’s a lot more of that in ‘Harry Potter,'” said Hanke.

What Is Augmented Reality

  • Often referred to as AR, it is when computer images are projected onto things and places in real life
  • For example, through your smartphone or tablet camera, you can see animated characters or magical objects in the game Wizards Unite

The game was the wizarding world’s answer to monster-catching AR game Pokémon Go, and was created by the same company, Niantic Labs.

No specific reason has been given for the decision yet, but Niantic said in a statement that “not all games are meant to last forever”.

They said: “Our goal with Harry Potter: Wizards Unite was to bring the magic of the wizarding world to life for millions of players as they stepped outside and explored their neighbourhoods. We accomplished that together, delivering a two-year narrative story arc that will soon complete.”

It will end on 31 January 2022. It will also be removed from app shops, and the community forums and social media channels will close, too. Niantic has said that there will be no refunds on in-game items and players have until the end of January to spend any remaining in-game currency.

The game will still be playable until the switch off though, with the company saying there will be a number of in-game events for players throughout November. There have also been a number of changes made to gameplay this month, which will last until the shutdown in the New Year.

Wizards Unite will close in January 2022.

Wizards Unite, the Harry Potter mobile game from Pokémon Go developers Niantic, is closing down.

The app plays a lot like its Pokémon cousin, with players finding magical objects and creatures out in the real-world. While no-one would have expected it to capture the lightning in a bottle success of Go‘s launch, which was a worldwide phenomenon, outlets paint a very bad picture overall: $40 million revenue since its 2019 launch, versus Go making $1 billion in 2021 alone so far.

Within its first 24 hours of release, it was installed on 400,000 devices, which paled in comparison to the 7.5 million installations of PokémonGo on its first day.

The AR title, which asks players to explore the real-world in a bid to keep the wizarding world safe, will be removed from app stores on December 6, 2021, and shuttered on January 31, 2022.

Niantic indicated the closure was part of its plan to deliver a “two-year narrative story arc that will soon complete,” adding that “not all games are meant to last forever.”

“Our goal with Harry Potter: Wizards Unite was to bring the magic of the wizarding world to life for millions of players as they stepped outside and explored their neighborhoods,” wrote the company in a blog post.

“Looking ahead, the power of AR allows us to layer many magical worlds on top of the real world, and there is so much potential out there that weve yet to explore.”

Niantic, best known for creating Pokemon Go, recently called time on Catan: World Explorers after hitting a design roadblock. Earlier this week, the company also launched Pikmin Bloom, the first in a series of AR titles created in partnership with Nintendo.

The studio currently has nine games and apps in the development pipeline, and said it will take lessons learned on Harry Potter: Wizards Unite into future projects.

Harry Potter: Wizards Unite Being Shut Down By Pokmon Go Developer

Pokémon GO developer Niantic has announced that its AR mobile game Harry Potter: Wizards Unite will officially be shut down in January 2022.

Mobile game Harry Potter: Wizards Unite is officially being shut down by its developer, Niantic, best known as the maker of Pokémon GO. The Wizarding World game failed to make the same splash as Pokémon GO when it launched back in 2019, and while download numbers at launch were far from a failure for Niantic, it seemed to prove that the mobile release would never quite reach the same popularity as GO.

Harry Potter: Wizards Unite is a mobile app that transforms the real world into a magical one through AR technology. The game gives everyday locations and areas a new magical spin, with points of interest becoming Fortresses, Greenhouses, and other buildings seen throughout the Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts series. Users can also encounter mythical creatures and familiar Wizarding World faces as they unlock spells, brew potions, and visit famous locations from the franchise including Dumbledores Office and Hagrids Hut. The Harry Potter game features all the ingredients for success, but has seemingly failed to capture audiences as well as Pokémon GO.
