Why Was Hermione Chosen As A Gryffindor And Not A Ravenclaw

Home Renovation House Tour | Mid-Way Through Renovation | DIYary 6

So I just reread the first book, and I realized that Hermione, at the time of the sorting, fit far ore into Ravenclaw than she did into Gryffindor. The hat searches for personality traits, and sorts you according to your most prominent attributes. And Hermione is know for being extremely studious, a trait which is usually given to Ravenclaws. Furthermore, she shies away from adventure until until after she befriends Harry and Ron months after the sorting. Even so, throughout the series she continuously has reservations about doing anything dangerous.

So why then did someone so intelligent not be placed in the house for extremely intelligent people, but instead be sorted into the house for courageous students, despite, especially at the time of the sorting, being somewhat cowardly or shy?

Did I miss something explaining this? It just seems like JKR wanted them all to be in the same house, even if Hermione doesn’t fit.

Why Is Hermione Granger Not In Ravenclaw

And this is why Hermione does not fit into Ravenclaw, since she lacks their creativity of thought. When you also add in her fearlessness and her strong convictions about right and wrong, which are inherently Gryffindor traits, then there was even less of a chance shed end up wearing blue and bronze.

Hogwarts Students Who Could Have Been Sorted Into Different Houses

The Sorting Hat was the supreme authority of who got sorted where at Hogwarts it was very rarely wrong. But thats not to say that there werent exceptions. Of course, even in trickier scenarios, there was always wisdom and logic behind the Sorting Hats decision a trait or a hidden depth in a student that nobody else could sense. Even so, here are some of the Hogwarts students who definitely gave the Sorting Hat a hard decision to make.

2 BEST OF SLYTHERIN

Speaking of stereotypes, Slytherin is undoubtedly the house that gets the most negative rep and is often called an evil house, or at least a bad house that only produces dark wizards with little to none redeeming attributes. This is not true, however, as Slytherins have a lot of great traits.

Married Ron And Had Two Kids

Hermione Grangers family home is up for sale for £2.4 million

Hermione eventually settled down and married her long-time friend and partner Ron Weasley. Ron and Hermione have two children, Rose and Hugo. At the end of The Deathly Hallows Part II, Hermione and Ron reunite with Harry and Ginny to watch their children depart for Hogwarts. It’s natural for a child to gravitate to a specific parent over the other as Rose seems to have a special bond with her mother. In Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Ron ironically says – “I have no idea where Rose gets her ambition from.” Yes, you do Ron and so do we.

Not only is Hermione a mother, it seems as though she’s particularity good at it too. We wouldn’t have thought otherwise though. Hermione is caring and intelligent, which are two excellent qualities for a mother to have. Hermione and Ron encourage Rose to make amends with Albus, who Rose was quarrelling with for befriending a Malfoy. Albus and Rose are cousins and managed to have a strong friendship, before it fell apart in their first year at Hogwarts. Hermione could tell that Albus was struggling and encouraged her daughter to make amends and try to re-friend Albus.

Does That Mean Jk Rowling Was Also Wrong Yes Yes It Does

Its rare that the Sorting Hat ever gets a sorting wrong , but when it comes to Hermione Granger, the hat definitely made a mistake.

It isnt that Hermione shouldnt be in Gryffindor, or shouldnt be in Ravenclaw , its that Slytherin is the best fit for her. The only reason Hermione wasnt put in Slytherin is because shes muggleborn. Way to perpetuate Slytherins elitist mentality, Sorting Hat

A singular trait isnt enough to place you in a house, no matter how dominant it is. Hermione is intelligent, but that doesnt automatically mean shes a Ravenclaw. Hermione is brave, but that doesnt automatically mean shes a Gryffindor. Ambition, resourcefulness, cunning, cleverness, and fraternalism are all traits Hermione Granger possesses. They are also all traits of a Slytherin.

She Nearly Had A Sister

When Harry and Ron first met Hermione on the Hogwarts Express, she told them: Nobody in my familys magic at all. While its possible she meant her extended family, there may be a reason Hermione didnt say: My parents arent magic. In a 2004 interview with the BBC on World Book Day, J.K. Rowling revealed the following:

I always planned that Hermione would have a younger sister but shes never made an appearance and somehow it feels like it might be too late now.

Darn.

Ron and Harry know they wouldn’t survive in their battle against Voldemort without Hermione. Just a few of the things she contributed throughout the years include figuring out Snape’s potions riddle, leading them to the Basilisk, punching Draco, using the Time-Turner, helping Harry with the Triwizard Tournament, using an undetectable extension charm on her bag during their hunt for Horcruxes, and risking her life, just to name a few.

Hermione is more successful in school than Harry in every subject except one. Harrys O.W.L. is in the books. DADA results are better than Hermioness, which is the only exam where he has outperformed her. The young wizards defensive skills are an advantage that gives him an edge in combat over his best friend.

Why Hermione Is Not A Ravenclaw

Its easy to look at Hermione Granger and say she should have been a Ravenclaw. After all, shes the top of all her classes, seems obsessed with studying, and is frequently described as the brightest witch of her age. However, despite her academic success, Hermione Granger is not a perfect fit for Ravenclaw.

The first reason shes not a Ravenclaw relates to a common misunderstanding about the House itself. Despite what many people believe, Ravenclaw doesnt necessarily mean good grades. People tend to write it off as the smart House and assume that everyone in it is as obsessed with academics as Hermione, if not more so. But just because youre intelligent doesnt mean you get good grades. Theres more than one way to be smart. So just because Hermione is a good student doesnt automatically make her a good Ravenclaw.

But if academics doesnt make a good Ravenclaw, what does? According to the Sorting Hat, you belong in Ravenclaw if youve a ready mind,/ Where those of wit and learning,/ Will always find their kind. Looking at this description, it seems like Ravenclaw is less about getting good grades and more about creativity and openness of thought. A ready mind is one thats eager and prepared to accept new ideas. Wit doesnt just mean intelligent it also means creativity and inventiveness. And learning doesnt just apply to classes.

Hermione Is The Brightest Witch Of Her Age

So this one is pretty obvious, but it’s definitely significant as to why Hermione would be excellent in the house of Ravenclaw. Rowena Ravenclaw, the founder of the house, favors education and intelligence above all else, and Hermione has been considered to be “the brightest witch of her age”. It seems only fitting that she would be placed in the house of Ravenclaw instead of Gryffindor because she is just so brilliant and all-knowing.

She Is A Person Who Takes Action And Speaks Up

Hermione Grangers House Is on the Market

Hermione has never been shy when it comes to expressing her beliefs and she will announce her values to the entire world without an ounce of fear as to how others will see her. To Hermione, taking action is necessary in order to make a change and her take-charge mentality is very common in Gryffindors. One of the clearest examples of this is when Hermione creates an organization at the young age of fourteen, called S.P.E.W: Society for the Promotion of Elfish Welfare. When most of us were fourteen, the cause that we were most actively passionate about was finally getting our braces taken off! Her activism is a clear sign of a true Gryffindor.

Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban

Hermione buys a cat named Crookshanks, who takes to chasing Ron’s pet rat, Scabbers. Before the start of term, Professor McGonagall secretly gives Hermione a Time-Turner, a device which enables her to go back in time and handle her heavy class schedule, though this is not revealed until the penultimate chapter. Much tension comes into play between Hermione and her two best friends Harry is furious with her because she told McGonagall that he had received a Firebolt, which was confiscated to be inspected for traces of dark magic. Ron is angry because he feels Crookshanks is responsible for Scabbers’ disappearance, while Hermione fiercely maintains that Crookshanks is innocent.

While filling in for Remus Lupin in one Defence Against the Dark Arts class, Snape labels Hermione “an insufferable know-it-all” and penalises Gryffindor after she speaks out of turn in her attempt to describe a werewolf when no one else does. She correctly deduces Lupin’s secret after completing Snape’s homework assignment from the class. Crookshanks proves vital in exposing Scabbers as Peter Pettigrew, an erstwhile friend of James and Lily Potter, who revealed their whereabouts to Lord Voldemort the night of their murders, and was able to wrongly implicate Sirius Black in the Potters’ deaths. The Time-Turner enables Hermione and Harry to rescue Sirius and the hippogriff Buckbeak.

Hermione attending Potions class in her sixth year

  • Potions: Hermione was exceptionally gifted in the field of potion-making. She was able to identify potions and their effects quickly after having only read about them. She was able to brew the very advanced and difficult Polyjuice Potion in second year for her, Harry, and Ron to find the truth about the Chamber of Secrets from Draco Malfoy by disguising themselves as his friends. She achieved an ‘Outstanding’ on her Potions O.W.L. and was only one of twelve to advance to N.E.W.T.-level. Hermione was the only one in her sixth year class who understood Golpalott’s Third Law, without need for further explanation and was able to compose an antidote containing fifty-two ingredients, including a chunk of her own hair. The only time she was ever out-smarted in potions was in her sixth year by Harry Potter because he was using the Half-Blood Prince’s old copy of the Advanced Potion-Making textbook that was full of hints and scribbles that helped Harry excel. This frustrated her greatly.

Albus Dumbledore

Albus Dumbledore, her former headmaster

As with most aspects of the wizarding world, Hermione read about Albus Dumbledore shortly after learning that she was a witch. Hermione on her very first train journey revealed she wanted to be in Gryffindor because it was the house that Dumbledore belonged to. She first met the Hogwarts headmaster during her her first year at the school, in 1991, and quickly came to respect Dumbledore’s immense power and seemingly infinite wisdom. Although Dumbledore was not as close with her as he was with Harry Potter, he showed great insight into her character very early on. She was one of only three students Dumbledore bequeathed a personal item, as he believed her to be, along with Ron Weasley, trustworthy of accompanying Harry on his mission to destroy Voldemort‘s Horcruxes.

He respected her intellect, perspicacity, and level-headedness, admitting to Harry that he had counted on Hermione to keep things in perspective when the trio finally discovered the existence of the Deathly Hallows. Hermione was devastated when Dumbledore was killed, and visited his portrait with Harry and Ron after the Battle of Hogwarts to determine the fate of the Hallows.

Something Made Her Blush During Potions

You might have noticed that Hermione detected an unnamed third scent in the Amortentia:

Its the most powerful love potion in the world! said Hermione.Quite right! You recognised it, I suppose, by its distinctive mother-of-pearl sheen? And the steam rising in characteristic spirals, said Hermione enthusiastically, and its supposed to smell differently to each of us, according to what attracts us, and I can smell freshly mown grass and new parchment and But she turned slightly pink and did not complete the sentence.Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

In a 2007 webchat, J.K. Rowling identified the smell as being Rons hair, saying: Every individual has very distinctive-smelling hair, dont you find? No wonder Hermione went quiet!

Hermione Granger : Ravenclaw

All due respect to the Harry Potter source material, but Hermione Granger never should have wound up in Gryffindor. Hermione was as Ravenclaw as they come.

She was incredibly brave, so the sorting hat cant disagree with her having Gryffindor tendencies. Hermione, however, always wanted to know more. Despite being a Muggleborn, she wanted to take Muggle Studies to learn about non-magical people from a wizards point of view! She used a time turner to create enough time to take all of the classes she wanted. Hermione spent more time in the library learning about every aspect of the wizarding world than she did anywhere else. There wasnt a subject she wasnt interested in, so we cant imagine a better fit for her than Ravenclaw.

She Is Never Afraid To Speak Her Mind

Hermione is often considered to be a “know it all” not only by Harry and Ron but also by her professors. Remember when Snape straight-up said right to this thirteen-year-old girl’s face, “Do you take pride in being an insufferable know-it-all?”. That’s just unacceptable.

Although it seems as though everyone at school would prefer that Hermione tone it down a notch, Hermione will never succumb to what others think is best. She will speak her mind and fight for her beliefs because she is a pure badass Gryffindor. Godrick would be proud.

Improved The Life Of House

A kind of magic? Hermione Granger

One of Hermione’s first positions with the Ministry of Magic was in the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures. One might think that Hermione would want to hunt former Death Eaters with Ron and Harry, but she decided to go to this department as the treatment of house-elves was always a cause Hermione cared deeply about. Hermione created S.P.E.W or the Society for the Promotion of Elfish Welfare while at Hogwarts, which seemed to be a cause she carried with her into the Ministry of Magic. Other students mocked Hermione for creating S.P.E.W and even her own friends, like Ron, were reluctant supporters.

J.K. Rowling was the person to inform readers that Hermione had used her position within the Ministry to dramatically improve the lives of House-Elves. House-Elves were bound by different magical rules, which allowed Dobby and even Kreacher to help save Hermione and her friends on more than one occasion. House-elves in Harry Potter were treated as slaves, which seem to ground the Wizarding World as not an altruistic place, but, more so a complicated place with its own shortcomings and challenges. We’re glad Rowling finally addressed a massive social injustice in the Harry Potter universe.

What Would Happen If Hermione Was A Ravenclaw

Hermione wouldnt be close friends with Harry and Ron, at least in the beginning. The series focus a lot on how important it is to read and learn, intelligence and knowledge, and with Hermione in Ravenclaw, the books would tend to focus on Harry and Rons brawn and how they blustered through half-made plans.
