Harry Potter: 10 Things Only Book Fans Know About Nymphadora Tonks
Nymphadora Tonks is a beloved character in the Harry Potter movies, but she has a more fleshed-out role in the books.
Nymphadora Tonks makes her first appearance in a Harry Potter movie in 2007’s Order of the Phoenix. In that blockbuster, fans learn that she’s able to change her appearance at will, has an amusing personality needed in the darkest of times, and is a formidable fighter, taking part in the battle at the Department of Mysteries. Tonks then returns in the Half-Blood Prince, Deathly Hallows: Part 1, and Deathly Hallows: Part 2 blockbusters, tragically dying during the latter.
Inevitably, Warner Bros couldn’t give fans every little detail on Tonks from the book. Here are things only people who have read J.K. Rowling’s novels know about the character.
She’s Always Doing Things With Remus
While their attraction is evident in the films since Tonks outright says they’ve married, calling Remus, who’s never been a joker, “My husband, the joker,” there’s a lot of tension in the books speculating who Tonks might be in love with instead. For some Remus/Tonks fans, this is akin to Dumbledore screaming, “Harry, did you put your name in the Goblet of Fire?!”
Her Father Was Killed By Snatchers
Snatchers appear in the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 movie. They come across Harry, Ron, and Hermione and take the trio to Malfoy Manor, where Death Eaters such as Lucius Malfoy, Bellatrix Lestrange, and Corban Yaxley are there waiting for them. But, in the source material, they’re also responsible for the murder of Ted Tonks–Nympahdora’s father.
As a muggle-born, Ted is forced to go on the run after refusing to register his identity. He meets Griphook the Goblin and Dean Thomas on his travels and Harry overhears the trio talking about himself and their belief he played no role in Albus Dumbledore’s death. Tonks’ mother helps the Boy Who Lived after he leaves Privet Drive but this, again, was something the movies didn’t show.

Battle Of The Department Of Mysteries
Nymphadora Tonks and other four people with her changed the way of Battle of Department of Mysteries in 1996. Tonks teleported to Department of Mysteries and fought against Death Eaters and Lord Voldemort to protect Harry Potter and his friends.
In this battle, right after she neutralized Lucius Malfoy, she seriously harmed by Bellatrix Lestrange in a duel.
The Battle Of Hogwarts
Its not the despair that gets you. Its the hope.
Yes, after all the struggles, all the worries, all the challenges to overcome, both Nymphadora Tonks and Remus Lupin were killed during the Battle of Hogwarts. It was a cruel end: a final, crushing unfairness in a world of unfairness. Why did it have to be them? Why did it have to be now?
One of the saddest things was that Tonks wasnt supposed to be there at all.
Harry looked at Tonks. I thought you were supposed to be with Teddy at your mothers?I couldnt stand not knowing Tonks looked anguished. Shell look after him have you seen Remus? He was planning to lead a group of fighters into the grounds Without another word, Tonks sped off.Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
We never saw Tonks find Lupin. Its uncertain if she even did. The next time Harry saw her she was dead, lying side-by-side with Lupin together, even in death.

- Hermione and Ron after Harry yells at Remus for leaving his wife
Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley were among the students who were very impressed by Remus’ teaching when he was professor of Defence Against the Dark Arts for their third year. Hermione deduced that Remus was a werewolf early in the year, but kept this discovery to herself, not even telling her best friends this is likely because she disapproved of the prejudice against werewolves and knew exposing the truth would hurt Remus. Although Ron initially reacted with fear to the revelation that Remus was a werewolf, he continued to admire and like Remus. In turn, Remus was fond of Ron and Hermione, and was particularly impressed by the latter’s cleverness. Ron and Hermione were shown to be very trusting of Lupin when he appeared at Grimmauld Place, they lowered their wands as soon as he declared his name, something he reproached them for, “speaking as their former Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher.” Also, they both disapproved when Harry yelled at Remus for leaving his wife during her pregnancy, although they did not entirely disagree with Harry’s reasoning.
Theirs Was A Harsh Wartime Romance
From the very beginning, their romance was defined by complications, by challenges to be overcome, by anxiety and fear. For not only did they have to contend with stigma and prejudice, and Lupins doubts and regrets, but the Second Wizarding War.
Has such a love ever been tested quite so fiercely? Even when Tonks became pregnant, the news was overshadowed by Lupins worries. Had he passed his condition on to an innocent child? Had he condemned yet another life to misery? At one point the worry overwhelmed him, and he tried to flee. But in an angry confrontation with Harry, he was convinced to stay.

Things Harry Potter Movie Fans Missed About Tonks
Nymphadora Tonks may be present in the Harry Potter movies, but as with everything in this franchise, the books have so much more…
Don’t call her Nymphadora, but don’t think you know everything about Tonks, either, if you have only seen her in the Harry Potter films! While Natalia Tena is a lovely actress, she just wasn’t given the time or space to develop into the Tonks readers know and love from the Harry Potter series, a complaint that many fans had of the films. She’s never truly explained and exists more as an Easter egg for readers than a fully developed character.
Introduced in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Tonks is a young Auror who is clumsy, cheeky and has a bit of a punk streak. She’s known for things people would completely miss if they haven’t read the books.

Nymphadora Tonks is one of the most important characters in the destiny of Harry Potter and Hogwarts. Nymphadora Tonks, also known as Tonks or Dora too. She took the name of Nymphadora Lupin after she had married. She is the only child of Andromeda Tonk and Ted.
Tonks studied in Hogwarts between 1984 1991. She was a member of Hufflepuff house.
But Their Love For Each Other Was Too Strong
Again, Tonks didnt care about Lupins condition. Inspired by Fleur Delacours love for Bill Weasley who had been bitten by the same werewolf who attacked Remus as a child, Fenrir Greyback Tonks made her feelings perfectly clear:
You see! said a strained voice. Tonks was glaring at Lupin. She still wants to marry him, even though hes been bitten! She doesnt care! Its different, said Lupin, barely moving his lips and looking suddenly tense. Bill will not be a full werewolf. The cases are completely But I dont care either, I dont care! said Tonks, seizing the front of Lupins robes and shaking them. Ive told you a million times …Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

- Hermione Granger: “And she’s more intelligent. She’s an Auror!”

Hermione Granger, her friend
Tonks met Hermione Granger and Ginny Weasley in the summer of 1995. She immediately struck up a friendship with them, acting somewhat like an older sister to the teenagers during their time at Grimmauld Place. Ginny appreciated Tonks since, although she was an adult, she was interested in having fun and taught her how to check if a door had an Imperturbable Charm on it, by flicking objects at the door in question. Hermione liked the fact that Tonks was proof that women could also be successful and get good positions after school. Both liked the fact that she could change her appearance at will, as she entertained them both over dinner by changing her nose into various shapes.
Ginny Weasley, her friend
In 1996, Ginny revealed that she would prefer Tonks rather than Fleur to marry her brother Bill and be part of their family. Ironically, Tonks was, albeit distantly, related to Ginny anyway. Hermione and Ginny felt worried about Tonks being depressed lately, such that it even affected her magical abilities. The two, however, became glad about her marriage with Remus Lupin in mid-1997.
Her Role In Protecting Hogwarts
Even the Nymphadora Tonks continued to work for Order of the Phoenix, but she mandatorily left her duty because of depression. As a result of her depression she wasnt able to control her shapeshifting abilities that caused her to stay in more passive position.
After Voldemorts return accepted by Ministry of Magic, Tonks was appointed into group of Aurors which are responsible to protect Hogwarts. She was also helped Harry Potter to get Hogwarts again when Draco Malfoy put out Harry Potter to send him back to London.

She Tricked The Dursleys
After Harry and Dudley are attacked by Dementors in the Order of the Phoenix movie, the Dursleys then head out, leaving the Boy Who Lived all alone. This is when the good guys make their move, taking the Boy Who Lived away from Number 4 Privet Drive to 12 Grimmauld Place–the headquarters of the anti-Voldemort movement and where the beloved Ron, Hermione, and Sirius are all waiting for him.
What the movie doesn’t reveal, however, is that they leave because of Tonks. She sends them a letter by muggle post saying they’ve been shortlisted for the ‘All-England Best Kept Suburban Lawn Competition’. Everybody is amused at the prospect of Vernon, Petunia, and Dudley all leaving the house only to find out they’ve been had. Funny stuff.

But Then There Was Hope
Teddy Lupin was born with no signs of lycanthropy, but did inherit his mothers ability to change his appearance at will. The night of his birth was one of the few times when Remus Lupin seemed truly happy. He found the Order and, beaming, told them the good news. With nothing but gratitude, he asked Harry to be Teddys godfather. There was a toast. To Teddy Remus Lupin, said Lupin, a great wizard in the making!
Everything had worked out. Remus, Nymphadora and Teddy: a family, living happily ever after. Everything was going to be okay.
Why Lupin And Tonkss Romance Is One Of Harry Potters Greatest Tragedies
The romance of Nymphadora Tonks and Remus Lupin happened, for the most part, off the page. We never witnessed their first meeting we never saw them slowly but surely falling for one another during Order of the Phoenix missions nor did we see their eventual wedding or their deaths.
It was a sub-plot: something happening in the background, a way of showing that the wizarding world didnt just revolve around Harry Potter, that his story was one of many taking place around him. And it was for this reason that perhaps we never fully absorbed the impact of just how sad their romance really was. It was a love story doomed to fail by prejudice and war, but ended up far worse.
This was the tragedy of Tonks and Lupin.

She Was Mentored By Alastor Moody
Being an auror isn’t easy. One has to undergo numerous tests and Tonks reveals she very nearly failed on ‘stealth and tracking’ in order to get into the profession. Fortunately, however, she was mentored by Alastor Moody – perhaps the very best in the game. Moody is successful at hunting down dark wizards during his time with the Ministry of Magic, carving out a formidable reputation for himself in the process.
Tonks is gutted when Moody dies, breaking down when the news filtered through. We find it hard to imagine Moody being a great mentor given his paranoia but it seems he was certainly up to the job, with Nymphadora showcasing her skills on the battlefield throughout the series.

Remus Lupin Was Convinced No One Could Ever Love Him
In Remus Lupin, J.K. Rowling detailed how Lupin and Tonks first met:
Remus, so often melancholy and lonely, was first amused, then impressed, then seriously smitten by the young witch. He had never fallen in love before. If it had happened in peacetime, Remus would have simply taken himself off to a new place and a new job, so that he did not have to endure the pain of watching Tonks fall in love with a handsome, young wizard in the Auror office, which was what he expected to happen.Remus Lupin, Pottermore
This was because werewolf Lupin, conditioned by years of stigma and prejudice, considered himself unworthy of love: that he was somehow too damaged for Tonks to ever return his feelings.
She’s Andromeda And Ted Tonks’s Daughter
The Tonks family dynamic is much more important in the books, and they are mentioned many times, from the demise of Ted to Voldemort’s order for a hit on the werewolf and Metamorphagus to Andromeda babysitting Tonks and Lupin’s son, Teddy, when Tonks seeks Lupin out at the Battle of Hogwarts. This makes it even more chilling when Bellatrix, her own aunt, takes her down.

She Gave Harry A Mini Firebolt
This is just a minor little thing, but it’s neat nonetheless. Tonks is actually a big Quidditch fan, something she reveals to Harry when she comes to rescue him from Privet Drive. And she’s fascinated by his Firebolt broomstick, which is meant to be the very best in the business–even being used by the Ireland and Bulgaria teams at the World Cup during the events of the Goblet of Fire.
For Christmas, Tonks gives Harry a mini model of his Firebolt. It’s a cute gift and the Boy Who Lived likes it, even if he prefers and possesses the real thing. Harry only ever gets gifts from the Weasleys at Christmas in the movies but his present network is significantly bigger in the source material.
