Re-Reading Harry Potter at Age 30 | Book 2 The Chamber of Secrets
  • Age: 12+
  • Grade: 7+

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is the stage for the ultimate battle between Harry and Voldemort. In addition to the gravity of this battle both physically and emotionally, keep in mind that Harry and their friends are now 17 years old and the novel is nearly 800 pages. So, a child should really be nearing high school to read this final book in the Harry Potter series.

There are many deaths , including violence, murder, bloodshed, and even the death of a pet.

The life lessons in the series, as well as character motivations, are also shared with much more depth, showcasing the meaning of life and death, courage, and loyalty in much more advanced ways.

In other words, it’s not just about Harry’s magical battle between good and evil, but also what it all means in the grand scheme of life, and how Harry has changed and matured over the course of the series.

What Age For Harry Potter Books: Our Familys Experience

What Age to Read Harry Potter Aloud

The first time we read Harry Potter aloud as a family, my kids were 6, 4, and 2. Our 6 year old had already read the 1st book on his own at that point, so he was very invested. My 4 year also loved it. The 2 year old didnt catch much of anything, but was happy to listen in.

Weve read them on and off several times since then. Were currently reading the first 3 books aloud again . Ive never read books 4 and beyond aloud my kids have always been too excited by that point to wait for me to read them aloud, so they just dive in on their own and devour them.

Right now, my 3rd kiddo is 5 years old and is very into the read alouds. While he doesnt catch everything and we occasionally need to review important plot points, he catches most of it. And he LOVES all the magic and funny parts, and always asks for more. So were going with it. Our current 2 year old gets very chatty during reading time so one of the adults will usually read him other books in another room.

My current 9 and 7 year olds are delighted to hear Harry Potter as many times as possible theyve each read the first 3 books at least 4-5 times and dont tire of them.

With all that said, ages 5-6+ have seemed to work really well for our family to start reading the first few books aloud.

Again a bit surprisingly for a childrens fantasy fiction series, theres a lot of wisdom in the Harry Potter books. Both Harry and other characters like Dumbledore or Professor Snape have a pretty good number of lines that are worth remembering.

is an extremely easy and enjoyable task if youre using a reading app like Basmo.

Heres how you do it:

  • Start a reading session.
  • If you find a line or a quote you want to remember or share on social media, you have two options: you can either add a note manually while reading or you can use the apps scanning feature, which allows you to can scan whole pages of a book or just paragraphs, extract the text and then format it as you see fit.
  • You can even save the quote as an image and share it on any social media platform

Human And Animal Rights And Informed Consent

Lancaster Universitys Ethics Committee approved the questionnaires and parent/participant information sheets prior to commencing fieldwork. Parents were informed that we required their consent for their childrens involvement, and we did not involve in this research children who had been withdrawn. Names were retained in the data only until focus group participants had been identified and will not appear in any publications. All computers storing data are encrypted. While primary school questionnaires were administered in class, the secondary school ones were administered electronically. In both cases, students participation was entirely voluntary. Researchers involved in administering questionnaires and running focus groups had CRB clearance.

    The Fantastic Beasts Screenplays

Unless you’ve been living under a rock this entire time, you’ve probably heard of the two new Wizarding World movies that have hit Hollywood in the past few years. Led by actor Eddie Redmayne and an all-star ensemble cast, the Fantastic Beasts films tell the story of Newt Scamander, Albus Dumbledore, and the dark battle against Gellert Grindelward in the blackened days before Lord Voldemort entered the scene.

Of course, you can choose to simply watch the continuation of the Wizarding World on-screen but reading the screenplays of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them: the Original Screenplay and Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald The Original Screenplay will undoubtedly give you that extra level of depth and insight into the characters.

So Here Goes Here Are 7 Things To Do When It Comes To Reading Harry Potter To Your Kiddo:

    1. Do NOT start too early. I know youve been chomping at the bit to do this for years, but it is imperative that you wait until they are ready. Ask yourself: does your kid have an amazing attention span? There are 4,224 pages in the Harry Potter series, 223 in the first book. Thats a lot of Fing pages . But seriously, can your kid sit through that many pages? If they can, AWESOME. If not, wait wait wait. I had one kid who was ready at 5 ½ and the other who wasnt ready until 7.

    2. Youuuuuuu wannnnnttttt toooooooo readddddd theeeeeeee firssssstttttt boooooooook realllllllyyyyyy slowwwwlllllllyyyyy.Sorry, thats as annoying as Colin Creevey. But heres the thing, Harry Potter is not easy. There are lots of characters, difficult names, weird accents, complicated plots, and lots of big vocabulary words. When I started reading it to both of my kiddos, not only did I go verrry slowwwly, but I even changed a difficult word here or there. Yes, I know you want them to learn words like incredulously and disgruntled, and they will, but if they cant understand the story, whats the point?

    3. Pause once in a while to talk about what youve read.Ask them questions just to make sure they understand whats going on. Easy questions like why does Harry have a scar? or what do you think about Harrys cousin? I actually did this with my son and quicky realized he had no Fing clue what was happening, and we put the book down and picked it back up about 6 months later.

    Completion Of The Series

In December 2005, Rowling stated on her web site, “2006 will be the year when I write the final book in the Harry Potter series.” Updates then followed in her online diary chronicling the progress of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, with the release date of 21 July 2007. The book itself was finished on 11 January 2007 in the Balmoral Hotel, Edinburgh, where she scrawled a message on the back of a bust of Hermes. It read: “J. K. Rowling finished writing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows in this room on 11 January 2007.”

Rowling herself has stated that the last chapter of the final book was completed “in something like 1990”. In June 2006, Rowling, on an appearance on the British talk show Richard & Judy, announced that the chapter had been modified as one character “got a reprieve” and two others who previously survived the story had in fact been killed. On 28 March 2007, the cover art for the Bloomsbury Adult and Child versions and the Scholastic version were released.

In September 2012, Rowling mentioned in an interview that she might go back to make a “director’s cut” of two of the existing Harry Potter books.

The Underland Chronicles By Suzanne Collins

Sheltered Homeschooler Reads Harry Potter: Book #4 ð?

Hunger Games author Suzanne Collins penned The Underland Chronicles for a middle school audience. The five books feature Gregor, who falls through a grate in his apartment buildings laundry room and finds himself among an army of giant rats in The Underland. Gregor learns he has a role to play in the Underlands future and will uncover the mystery surrounding his fathers disappearance.

My non-reader son DEVOURED it and begged for the next book, writes an Amazon reviewer. The first book in the series is Gregor the Overlander, followed by The Prophecy of Bane, The Curse of the Warmbloods, The Marks of Secret, and The Code of Claw.

Harry Potter And The Cursed Child By Jk Rowling Jack Thorne And John Tiffany

Nineteen years after Harry, Ron, and Hermione leave Hogwarts, Harry is working in the Ministry of Magic and raising three kids with his wife Ginny. While the original trio are important characters in this direct sequel to the Harry Potter series, the spotlight in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child shines brightest on Harrys son Albus and Albuss best friend, Scorpio Malfory, who both must wrestle with their families legacies.

Sometimes called the eighth Harry Potter book, The Cursed Child is different from all the others because its a stage play rather than a novel. It doesnt read like a Harry Potter book, but it is an official continuation of the Hogwarts story. See it on the stage in person if you can, but if you cant, the official playscript of the original West End production is a good substitute.

Book #: Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets

    • Age: 8+
    • Grade: 3+

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets is the book in which Harry and his friend Ron return to Hogwarts in a flying car. There, a rumor spreads that the Chamber of Secrets has been opened to release a deadly monster.

In the Forbidden Forest, they meet a giant spider, and there’s also a ghost in the bathroom. Harry then enters the Chamber of Secrets in an attempt to save Ron’s sister, Ginny, where Voldemort sets a giant serpent on Harry, and a battle ensues.

A few other content warnings include blood and petrification of students.

It’s pretty similar in terms of content level to the first book, so both can be read by younger readers around age 8+ and grade 3+. If a child had no problem with book #1, it’s likely they will do just fine with book#2 as well.

Percy Jackson And The Olympians By Rick Riordan

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban: â Gryffindor Edition

Rick Riordans Percy Jackson and the Olympians is one of the most popular series to read after Harry Potter. Like the characters in the Harry Potter books, Percy Jackson grows older as the series progresses, with Percy starting as a 12-year-old in the first book and growing older with each book. In the first book, Percy discovers that his father is the Greek god Poseidon and is sent to Camp Half-Blood with other kids of divine parentage. From there, he goes on a quest to the Underworld to retrieve a stolen lightning bolt. The five-book series consists of The Lightning Thief, The Sea of Monsters, The Titans Curse, The Battle of the Labyrinth, and The Last Olympian.

If you are a Potterhead, or if you like magic-related books, youll definitely not get bored, raves one reviewer on Amazon, though others note that this series is less likely to appeal to older teens and adults than J.K. Rowlings more complex Harry Potter books.

Our study involved two primary and two secondary schools in the North West of England and was carried out between November 2012 and June 2013. All four schools were co-educational and state funded. Both primaries and one secondary were affiliated to, and partially funded by, Christian denominations, which is characteristic of schools in the area. The first phase of this study involved a questionnaire with 621 respondents in which 56 % of primary and 48 % of secondary pupils self-identified as Potter readers, meaning they had read at least one of the books.Footnote 1 From this subsample we invited 76 enthusiasts to participate in single-sex focus groups. Enthusiasts were defined as children who reported on their questionnaire that they had read four or more Potter novels, though in order to have sufficient participants, we lowered the bar to two novels for boys and girls in PS1 and for boys in PS2 and SS2. We ran 11 single-sex focus groups facilitated by a same-sex researcher: one of boys and one of girls in each primary, and four of girls and three of boys in the two secondary schools. Groups ranged from three to ten pupils equal-sized groups were not possible because of absences or because subject teachers did not permit children to attend an entire session.
