How Does Jk Rowling Use Latin And Other Classical Languages In Harry Potter

Dumbledore Etymology | What Does Dumbledore Mean?

To create a sense of the long history of wizardry in the Potterverse, JK Rowling drew heavily on classical languages. The OU’s Joanna Paul explores.

Draco dormiens nunquam titillandus classical scholars might struggle to find this Latin phrase in their texts of Cicero or Virgil, Ovid or Juvenal; but ardent readers of J.K. Rowlings Harry Potter series will know exactly what it means. Never tickle a sleeping dragon is the translation of the motto that Rowling devised for the Hogwarts school crest: a useful and practical piece of advice for aspiring wizards, she explained.

School mottoes especially for old-fashioned boarding schools like Hogwarts have often borrowed the cultural resonances of Latin. But in Rowlings wizarding world, this quite conventional use of Latin is just one part of the rich tapestry of magical language that she weaves. The spells that Harry and his friends learn, for example, are often real Latin words such as accio, I summon or blends of Latin words, or Latin with other languages: expelliarmus, the disarming charm, sounds like real Latin, but is a mixture of expello, I drive out, and arma, weapons, while the light charm lumos is an adaptation of the Latin lumen, light.

Harry Potter: Every Main Characters Name

Harry Potter fans know almost everything there is to know about the main characters, but what about the meaning of their names?

In the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, a name is more than what the character makes it. The name makes the character. Many authors take precious time to make sure they choose just the right name to convey what they want, and J.K. Rowling is no exception. Sometimes, choosing the name is the most difficult part of writing a character.

Names can be made up or taken from an author’s own childhood or influences. They can be used as fun little discoveries or to hide deep secret revelations in plain sight.

What Does Aurelius Mean? Credence

Cedric is a common incorrectly spelled version of “Cerdic,” a sixth-century Saxon king.

His last name may come from “Sir Degare,” an obscure Middle English poem. It might also be a reference to;Digory Kirke, a character from C.S. Lewis’s “The Chronicles of Narnia,” of which Rowling is a fan.

Amos, Cedric’s father, is named after a Biblical prophet. In Hebrew, the name is related to the word “burden,” which Amos must carry after his son’s death.

Godric Gryffindor Is Definitely Rowling’s Favorite Hogwarts Founder

“Godric” is derivative of the Old English name “Godrich,” which basically means “good person.”;So no mystery there about which Hogwarts house Rowling sided with the most.

The last three letters of “Gryffindor” “d’or” are French;”golden,” one of the colors of the house. A griffin is a mythological beast that’s part lion and part eagle.

Rowling Picked The Dursley Family Names Because She Didn’t Like Them

Both “Dudley” and “Dursley” are the names of areas in England Rowling got them by looking at a map.

“The surname Dursley was taken from the eponymous town in Gloucestershire, which is not very far from where I was born,” Rowling wrote on Pottermore. “I have never visited Dursley, and I expect that it is full of charming people.”

She’s also acknowledged that naming such an unlikable family after the town might have its consequences.

“I don’t imagine I’m very popular in Dursley,” Rowling once said in an interview.

As for Dudley’s parents, the names were chosen because of their emotional associations.

“Vernon is simply a name I never much cared for. Petunia is the name that I always gave unpleasant female characters in games of make believe I played with my sister, Di, when we were very young,” Rowling wrote.

Where Does Dumbledore Come From

The first records of the word dumbledore come from the late 1700s. The word is a combination of dumble-, a term used in the names of buzzing insects, and a variant of the word dor, which is used as a name for several insects that buzz when they fly. Dor itself comes from the Old English dora, which means bumblebee and is related to Middle Low German dorte, meaning drone. The verb drone can mean the same thing as hum or buzzto make a low and continuous humming sound. The first part of the word, dumble-, is a variant of drumble, meaning to move sluggishly or clumsily . Although drumble sounds very similar to bumble, the bumble in bumblebee comes from the Middle English bomblen, from bomben, meaning to boom or to buzz. The word bumble can mean to make a humming sound.

In the Harry Potter series, Dumbledore is a powerful wizard and the headmaster; of the Hogwarts school. Harry Potter author J. K. Rowling has said that the inspiration to name the character Dumbledore was based on the fact that she always imagined him as humming to himself . His full name is Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore. The Latin word albus means white.

Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger were Harry Potter‘s best friends and, like Harry, they thought Dumbledore was a great wizard. Dumbledore liked them too, despite that he wasn’t as close to them as he was to Harry.

After his death, he left Ron his Deluminator and Hermione his copy of The Tales of Beedle the Bard. These gifts were proven very useful, as Ron abandoned Harry and Hermione formerly to find his family, and, when he wanted to come back to Harry and Hermione, the Deluminator showed him the way. The trio also read the Tales of Beedle the Bard and learned about the Deathly Hallows. Harry, Ron and Hermione also visited Dumbledore’s portrait, after the Battle of Hogwarts.

Dolores Jane Umbridge Is One Of The Most Despised Characters Rowling Ever Invented

Rowling modeled her most detestable character after a teacher she hated, as she wrote in Pottermore. Her name is a reflection of her characteristics.

“Umbridge’s names were carefully chosen,” Rowling wrote.

‘Dolores’ means sorrow, something she undoubtedly inflicts on all around her. ‘Umbridge’ is a play on ‘umbrage’ from the British expression ‘to take umbrage’, meaning offence. Dolores is offended by any challenge to her limited world-view; I felt her surname conveyed the pettiness and rigidity of her character. It is harder to explain ‘Jane’; it simply felt rather smug and neat between her other two names.

Rowling Found Gilderoy Lockhart’s Name On A Random War Memorial

“I was looking for quite a glamorous, dashing sort of surname, and Lockhart caught my eye on this war memorial, and that was it,” Rowling told the BBC.

She said she found “Gilderoy” while looking through the Dictionary of Phrase and Fable. She found the name “Gilderoy” as belong to;”a highway man, and a very good-looking rogue.”

“Gilderoy Lockhart, it just sounded perfect,” Rowling said. “Impressive, and yet, in the middle, quite hollow, of course.”

He Who Must Not Be Named/ You

Considering how much thought he put into it, Voldemorts name wasnt actually used that much. Even 11 years after his apparent defeat, Hagrid struggled to voice it, saying: Gulpin gargoyles, Harry, people are still scared.

He wasnt the only one. Rons reaction to hearing Harry say Voldemort shows how widespread the practise of not using it had become so much so, Harry felt it as a sign of his ignorance.

Im not trying to be brave or anything, saying the name, said Harry. I just never knew you shouldntHarry Potter and the Philosophers Stone

So Voldemort gained new aliases: He Who Must Not Be Named, You-Know-Who, The Dark Lord . It seems Dumbledores words to Harry about fear of a name increasing fear of the thing itself were true for most of the wizarding world.

Not Dumbledore, though. In Voldemorts presence, he insisted on calling him Tom Riddle, subtly reminding the Dark Lord of his past. But when talking to others, it was always Voldemort. In doing so, he forced people to face the truth: that Voldemort remained a man of humble origins even if he was also a dangerous, Dark wizard.

Using his own name to trap those working against him must have given the former Tom Riddle a twisted satisfaction. And yet, while it did lead to Harrys capture, the Taboo also showed Voldemorts motivation had never changed. As a commonly-named child in a Muggle orphanage hed longed to stand out; as the Dark Lord of the wizarding world he wanted much the same thing.

The magical world of J. K. Rowling is known by millions of children, teens, and adults. Especially; those who grew up reading the books and then watched the magic come to life of the silver screen later on. J.K. Rowling created the world of Harry Potter from her vast imagination ;and perhaps from other sources.; These included Dickens and Tolkien, which she says filled her free time during her college years.

J.K Rowling attended University of Exeter and received her BA in French and Classics. It is evident that she received a degree in Classics, because the Harry Potter series is filled with Latin words and ancient mythology. While the mythological references may be easier to see in character names;; the Latin reference may not be as discernible.

What Does Dumbledores Full Name Mean

Posted: 14 years ago

Dumbledore’s full name is Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore, as he states during the fifth instalment in the series, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. The name “Dumbledore” is an old Devon word for “bumblebee” and was picked by Rowling because she imagines him wandering around the castle humming to himself.

The name Albus is the Latin word for ‘white’, a frequently used symbol for good, which marks the character out as an enemy of the ‘Dark Lord’.

Percival is a name from old French, meaning “pierce the veil”. It was the name of one of King Arthur’s knights. While Galahad was the only knight pure enough to be permitted to hold the Grail, Percival was permitted to see it. The oldest recorded version of Percival’s story is Chrtien de Troyes’ Conte du Graal, from the 12th century. In Alfred, Lord Tennyson’s “The Holy Grail”, one of the Idylls of the King,

Percival is both hero and narrator of the tale, as is the case for Dumbledore in parts of the Harry Potter books. And as revealed in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, this is also his father’s name.

The name Wulfric means “wolf-power” and is reminiscent of the legendary hero Beowulf , who, in his early years, slew the monster Grendel .

It has also been noted that the name ‘Albus’ bears a resemblance to the name of a 19th-20th century stage magician, ‘The Great Albini’, who was a friend and rival of the less proficient magician Horace Goldin .

Rufus Scrimgeour Wasn’t Afraid To Take On Voldemort

In the books, Scrimgeour replaced Fudge and Pius Thicknesse as the Minister for Magic one who tried to hunt down Voldemort head on instead of cowering before it. The name makes sense. “Scrimgeor” is a Scottish clan name derived from a phase that means “someone who skirmishes.”;”Rufus” comes from the Latin;word meaning “red-haired.”

The Different Meanings Behind Lord Voldemorts Many Names

What does et cetera mean literally in Latin?

Harrys introduction to the artist formerly known as Tom Riddle came from Hagrid, but with most of the wizarding world refusing to discuss the self-styled Lord Voldemort, it was Dumbledore who first named him for us.

It all gets so confusing if we keep saying You- Know-Who. I have never seen any reason to be frightened of saying Voldemorts name, he told Professor McGonagall at the beginning of Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone. Later he explained to Harry: Fear of a name increases fear of the thing itself.

As feats of defiance go it might seem a small thing, but given that inciting fear was a key Voldemort tactic, Dumbledores casual treatment carried a certain kind of resistance. But if Dumbledores resistance was, at least initially, subtle, Voldemorts was definitely not…

James and Lily Potter, his friends and former students

Dumbledore first met James Potter and Lily Evans during their first year at Hogwarts, where he was the Headmaster. Dumbledore had a good relationship with both of them, knowing them both to be pure souls. James had lent Dumbledore his Invisibility Cloak one of the three Deathly Hallows. After James’s death Dumbledore returned the cloak to James’s son, Harry.

When the Potters became Voldemort’s targets due to a prophecy made about their son and the Dark Lord, Dumbledore attempted to protect them by casting the Fidelius Charm and offering to be their Secret Keeper, but the role of Secret Keeper went instead to Peter Pettigrew, which turned out to be a fatal mistake, as Peter turned out to be a spy, and he betrayed Lily and James to Voldemort, who killed them. Dumbledore was very saddened by their deaths and dedicated the rest of his life to protecting their son, Harry, without giving him any happiness in his childhood. He often told Harry about the great goodness of his parents, and repeatedly consoled him with the assurance that his parents would never ever truly leave him because of their love for him. Dumbledore also believed that Harry’s love for his parents was his greatest power.

Harry Potter regarding Dumbledore’s magical skill

Dumbledore was an outstandingly talented wizard, even while still only a student of Hogwarts, excelling in many fields of magic to the point of being recognised by his friend Elphias Doge as the most brilliant student to ever attend the school, possibly rivalled only by the prodigiously brilliant Tom Riddle, and attaining many awards and prizes that required incredible magical capability to obtain. As an adult, Dumbledore had become an extraordinarily powerful and accomplished wizard of nearly unrivalled abilities and powers, to the point that he was admired and feared by even others of outstanding magical talent, considered to be the greatest wizard of all time by many. Indeed, Dumbledore was the only wizard capable of defeating Gellert Grindelwald and later forcing Lord Voldemort himself on the defensive.
