Chapter Book Read-a-long: Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone-Chapter 5 part 1

Rowling worked as a researcher and bilingual secretary in London for Amnesty International, then moved with her boyfriend to Manchester where she worked at the Chamber of Commerce. In 1990, she was on a four-hour delayed train trip from Manchester to London when the idea came fully formed into her mind for a story of a young boy attending a school of wizardry. When she reached her Clapham Junction flat, she began to write immediately.

In December 1990, Rowlings mother Anne died after ten years suffering from multiple sclerosis. Rowling was writing Harry Potter at the time and had never told her mother about it. Her mothers death heavily affected Rowlings writing, and she channelled her own feelings of loss by writing about Harrys grief in greater detail in the first book.

For Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Columbus stayed on as a producer, but there is a new director, Alfonso Cuaron, whose previous work has demonstrated ferocious visual flair and great sensitivity in working with and portraying children and teens . He has kept the best of the first Potter films and enriched it with his own splendid vision, meshing perfectly with the tone of the story and the increasing complexity of the themes and characters. The third in the series is darker than the first two, but it possesses the same magical qualities that Potter fans will love.

This difference creates a continuity error in the seventh film when Lupin interrogates Harry after the Battle of the Seven Potters holding his wand to Harrys face and asking him what creature sat in the corner the first time Harry Potter visited my office in Hogwarts. A deleted scene is assumed to show this, before the two of them went for a walk on the Wooden Bridge.

Director Chris Columbus has revealed the original cut of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone shown to test audiences ran almost three hours long. Columbus convinced Warner Brothers to let him direct the first movie based on the strength of his filmography, which includes the Christmas classics Home Alone and Home Alone 2: Lost in New York and Robin Williams’ hit comedy Mrs. Doubtfire. The first Harry Potter film was a smash hit, making almost $1 billion worldwide, and saw Columbus return for the first sequel, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

That movie was similarly successful, but Columbus didn’t return to helm any of the other films in the franchise, with WB favoring filmmakers who could age up the content along with the characters. Though, Columbus’ efforts stand the test of time as two classic children’s adventure movies and an appropriate introduction to the iconic characters from . One of the most common criticisms of the movies is their runtime, unusually long for children’s movies. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone runs 152 minutes, while Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets is even longer at 161 minutes. They both pale in comparison to the first cut of the former movie.

Harry Potters Us Publication Made It A Bonafide Phenomenon

Harry Potter did fine when it first emerged in the UK 20 years ago, winning a Smarties Award and garnering respectable sales for its publisher, Bloomsbury. But it only started to approach phenomenon levels when Scholastic bought the US publication rights for an astonishing $105,000, about 10 times more than the average foreign rights sale at the time.

Arthur Levine, the Scholastic editor who acquired the books, had an excellent eye for British books that would work in the US, having already acquired the US rights to Redwall and His Dark Materials. But even he didnt know that Harry Potter would grow as big as it did. He just knew that he loved it and wanted to publish it. Scholastic President Barbara Marcus Barbara Marcus kept saying do you love it? and Arthur said yes, so we went for it, a Scholastic spokesperson recalled in 2002. I would have been willing to go further than that if I had to,” Levine said in 2007.

The $105,000 sale granted Harry Potter two things: a built-in publicity hook, and a big budget.

The hook came from the press: Newspapers featured articles about the little English book that had garnered such a huge sale. Reviewers wanted to know what kind of book would justify that kind of money. It was a curiosity, and as such, it was a story.

Harry Potter Director Confirms Initial Cut Of Debut Film Was Nearly 3 Hours Long

A Harry Potter primer from Sorcerers Stone to ...

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, the first film in the massive Harry Potter movie franchise, is by no means a short movie. The fourth longest of all eight of the films, the story clocks in at a beefy 152 minutes — over two and a half hours. It’s a substantial length for a film based off of a children’s novel, but it turns out that the original, first cut of the film was even longer coming in at 172 minutes — nearly three hours.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone director Chris Columbus recently told Collider that even at nearly three hours, the film was a hit with kids and it was the parents who screened that version who thought it was just too long.

“By the time we finished the film and we screened it in Chicago — it’s good luck for us to screen our films in Chicago, so back in the day when we could go to a movie theater we would fly to Chicago and show films to an audience — the audience loved it. The audience just ate up the film,” Columbus said. “The film was two hours and fifty minutes long at that point and the kids thought it was too short and the parents thought it was too long.”

As for what happened to the additional minutes that didn’t make it to the theatrical cut, an extended version was released on Blu-ray adding an extra seven minutes to the runtime, but the rest of the deleted material is available in special features on the Blu-ray and DVD releases of the film.

Harry Potter And The Sorcerers Stone: How It Launched A Franchise

On the anniversary of the original release of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone movie, we take a look back…

This Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone article originally ran on Den of Geek UK.

The Harry Potter films are to the Noughties what Star Wars was to the generation that grew up in the Seventies and Eighties. In many ways, that would be a shame for George Lucas, who presumably hoped his prequels would make Star Wars into the Star Warsfor the Noughties.

On a personal level, I can trace my interest in films back to the production of the first film in the series, Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone. Having loved all of the books released at that point, I absorbed every nugget of information I could find about the big-screen version, before the films release in November 2001.

Its for that reason that, while I might forget my PIN number or when my birthday is, I can recall the name of the actor who played Quidditch captain, Oliver Wood, at will. These were the beginnings of my film geekdom. But its in retrospect, and with the added capacities that come with being older than 11, that you notice these arent flawless films.

So, with the anniversary of the films initial release coming around again , it seems as good a time as any to look back on the big old mega-franchise, which brought in four directors in eight films, keeping most of the same cast, in just under a decade.

It Was Going To Have An American Cast

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, Chapter 10 (audio book read by Tom Wiseman)

While plenty of British actors play American characters, the reverse is less common. Few American actors take on roles where they need to don an English accent.

However, when youre casting for a surefire blockbuster like Harry Potter, youd probably want to cast well-known actors wholl bring in even more audience members and, in turn, revenue. With that in mind, many of the actors originally considered for main roles in the franchise were American.

One of the biggest names that was attached to the first movie was Robin Williams. Apparently, he was Warner Bros.’ first choice to play Hagrid, but J.K. Rowling was adamant about keeping the cast primarily British.

While Robin Williams’s take on the role would have undoubtedly been a treat, the role ultimately went to Robbie Coltrane who, for many, is the perfect Hagrid. Another American actor who was considered for a role in the first film was Liam Aiken, who was Christopher Columbuss first pick for Harry.
