Harry Potter Sites By Train + Day Tours

It is actually easy to see all the sites in this post without needing a car. Heres a quick itinerary.

3 Days in London

Start your Harry Potter adventure with 3 days in London. Wed suggest one full day to see all the Harry Potter sights in London, either on your own or on a walking tour.

Then, use your other two days to take a day trip to the Harry Potter Studio and Oxford, and a day trip to Gloucester and Lacock Abbey.

If you want to see more of London, just add in a day or two check out our 2 day London itinerary for some ideas.

Once you are done in London, take the train up to York. This takes around 2 hours, and youll get the best prices if you buy your tickets in advance.

2 Days in York

York makes a good base for a number of Harry Potter filming locations, plus the city itself is beautiful. Its also said that the film producers visited the Shambles area of the city to get some inspiration for creating Diagon Alley.

From York, you can take a full day tour which includes a visit to Durham Cathedral and Goathland train station. If you want to visit Malham Cove, you could also do this by combination of train and bus from York.

After York, its another 2 hours or so by train up to Edinburgh.

3 Days in Edinburgh

From Edinburgh, we recommend taking a day trip down to see Alnwick Castle. Then take another day trip to experience Glencoe, the Hogwarts Express and other filming locations in Scotland.

In one of the franchises most famous scenes, when Dobby dies in the Deathly Hallows Part 1, which was shot on a beach in Wales, Diane actually fell into Daniel Radcliffes arms and had to pretend to be dead.

The Reptile House At London Zoo

VIDEO: Watch Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert ...

Appeared in: Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone

The Reptile House at London Zoo is the real life location where Harry sets that Burmese python free near the beginning of the veeery first Harry Potter movie.

Allow me to jog your memory if this doesnt sound familiar: the whole Dursley fam is there to celebrate jerkface Dudleys birthday, and when Dudley knocks Harry over to look at the snake, Harrys angry powers get the glass to disappear and Dudley just falls and gets trapped in the snake pit. Classic.

Kings Cross Station London

One of our favourite scenes in the films is when Harry first visits Platform 9 3/4 to board the Hogwarts Express.

In the books and films, this location is clearly stated as being at Kings Cross station, one of Londons major train stations which handles most trains heading north. This makes sense, as Hogwarts is described in the books as being in the north of the UK.

In the movie, Harry goes to the magical platform 9 3/4, which unfortunately cant be visited by non-magical folk. However, if you want to visit the filming location, youll want to head to platforms 4 and 5, which was where the sequence in the first movie was actually shot.

Theres another bonus at Kings Cross train station theres a station luggage trolley, as found in the books, cunningly embedded in the wall as a photo opportunity. This was once a hidden gem, but those days are long gone, so now expect to queue for about 1 hour if you want your photo taken here.

Instead, our suggestion would be to head to the next stop on our tour of Harry Potter filming locations in the UK, where you can have the same photo opportunity but with much less of a wait.

Best Way To Get To Harry Potter Filming Locations

How Did Molly Weasley KILL Bellatrix? What Spell? – Harry Potter Theory

The best way to get around to most of the filming locations is by car as it gives you the most flexibility. You can also visit the most popular locations by taking a day tour, such as this one from Edinburgh, which is great for those limited on time but want to see the highlights.

Car hire is available in a number of locations in Scotland with the most selection in the larger cities like Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen, and Inverness. There are a lot of car rental companies, we normally use Enterprise for rental cars.

But many of the Harry Potter movie locations can also be visited by taking a public bus or train. Some are a short walking distance away from a public transit stop, but some do require longer walks to reach or a taxi ride. So plan ahead if you want to travel by public transportation to find out whats possible.

If you want to travel by public transit in Scotland , we recommend using the Traveline website to help plan your journey.

Lacock Village And Abbey

This 13th-century abbey in Wiltshire and the pretty nearby village were used extensively for Harry Potter filming locations in England.

In The Philosopher’s Stone, the village of Godric’s Hollow and Godric’s Hollow Parish Church can be recognised in Lacock, and Harry’s parents cottage was filmed at the end of Church Street.

Lacock Abbey was yet another stand-in for Hogwarts, with the most recognisable location being the cloisters which were used as the halls of Hogwarts Castle. The Abbey ‘s Warming Room, containing a giant cauldron, was Professor Quirrell’s Defence Against the Dark Arts classroom, Professor Snape’s Potions Class was held in the Sacristy, and the Chapter House was where Harry found the Mirror of Erised in The Philosopher’s Stone.

Hampstead Garden Aka Hermiones Hood

Appeared in: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1

How can we forget that sad little scene in Deathly Hallows Part 1 when Hermione takes running away from home to the next level by using Obliviate on her parents and erasing herself from their memory?

Well, the real-life house that stood in as Hermiones swanky pad is actually located in the suburb of Hampstead Garden in Heathgate, London. Since the Grangers are dentists, this is a very nice neighbourhood, and when the house went on sale a few years back, it had a tidy little asking price of £2,400,000. No charm could make me Obliviate the fact that I cant afford that.

PS: Random geek out moment, did you ever notice that Hermiones mom is Catelyn Stark from Game of Thrones? Does that technically make Hermione Robb Starks half-sister in the twisty universe of nerdy fiction? Anyway

Freshwater West Beach Pembrokeshire Coast Wales

7 Films You Didn

Last on our list of Harry Potter filming locations in the UK is Freshwater West beach, found on the beautiful Pembrokeshire Coast of Wales.

This was the location of the sad scene at the end of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 where Harry, Ron, and Hermione bury Dobby the House Elf following their battle at Malfoy Manor. Its only the opening scene of Part 2 of the Deathly Hallows.

As well as being Dobbys burial site, this was also the filming location of the outside of Shell Cottage. The cottage was built on this location and used for exterior shots.

Today nothing remains of the cottage. For a long time there was a real life Dobbys Grave on this location, constructed by fans. Unfortunately, the number of visitors to this location started to cause erosion, and so it was decided to remove it to protect the delicate environment here.

However, the beach is still spectacular and well worth a visit. Whilst you cant see anything of Dobbys grave or Shell Cottage today, the location is about midway along the beach in the dunes.

Harry Potter Filming Locations In Oxford

Alright next up, lets do Oxford. Honestly, visiting Oxford feels like prancing around one giant Harry Potter film set so you dont need too much of a guide, but there are several hotspots around town that were both used for filming and as clear inspiration for many of the sets in the franchise. Here are some spots you definitely need to check out:

Harry Potter And The Philosopher’s Stone

Harry Potter is an orphaned boy brought up by his unkind Muggle aunt and uncle. At the age of eleven, half-giant Rubeus Hagrid informs him that he is actually a wizard and that his parents were murdered by an evil wizard named Lord Voldemort. Voldemort also attempted to kill one-year-old Harry on the same night, but his killing curse mysteriously rebounded and reduced him to a weak and helpless form. Harry became extremely famous in the Wizarding World as a result. Harry begins his first year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and learns about magic. During the year, Harry and his friends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger become entangled in the mystery of the Philosopher’s Stone which is being kept within the school.

The Leaky Cauldron: Leadenhall Market London England

Wizard pub, The Leaky Cauldron, was set in what is now an opticians in Bulls Head Passage, Leadenhall Market. Behind that was where the glittering Diagon Alley shopping street was imagined, selling spell books and potions so enticing that Harry wished he had eight eyes to see.

Whilst you probably wont find any magic shops, the ornate Victorian marketplace is a splendid place to pick up some Harry Potter inspired British fashion. Bag yourself a classic wax Barbour jacket, as sported by Ron Weasley in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.

The Origins Of Harry Potter In Edinburgh

After her years in Porto, Rowling moved to Edinburgh. It was here, frequenting quaint coffee shops, that she finished the first novel in the series. In fact, ten years later she also finished the last lines of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows in a hotel in Edinburgh.

Youll be surprised to see the interesting comparisons between Edinburghs Victoria Street, and the famous Diagon Alley. You can discover all this and much more during the Harry Potter Free Tour.
