Harry Potter Movies In Order Of Chronological Events

Harry Potter Movie Scenes That Weren’t From The Books

Now, here’s where things get slightly tricky. The Fantastic Beasts films are prequels, so they take place decades before the events of the original Harry Potter movies.

Those take place during Harry’s time at Hogwarts, so each book/movie corresponds to a school year. The final two movies split the final book and school year.

Here’s the list of Harry Potter movies and the year in which they are set:

  • Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
  • Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald
  • Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone
  • Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
  • Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
  • Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
  • Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
  • Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
  • Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1
  • Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2
  • Fantastic Beasts 3 is likely to be set right after the second film in that series and before the events of Sorcerer’s Stone.

And if the Harry Potter stage play, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, is made into a movie, it would fall at the end of both the release order and chronological order since it’s set circa 2017.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone ruined Daniel Radcliffes expectations for what is normal on a film set.

The Great Hall, where he shot many of the scenes from the first of eight films based on the J.K. Rowling series, was a phantasmagoria of detail. Platters of real lamb chops, roasted potatoes and puddings sat alongside 400 hand-lettered menus and for at least one scene hundreds of real, glowing candles. The hall set took 30 people a little over four months to construct.

I can count on the fingers of one hand the number of sets Ive been on since in my career that are of that scale, Radcliffe said in a video interview from his New York apartment in October.

Directed by Chris Columbus, the story of a boy who, upon turning 11, discovers hes a wizard and goes off to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry opened Nov. 16, 2001, and went on to gross more than $1 billion worldwide.

When Radcliffe and the young actors who played his friends, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson were making the film, they werent just pretending to have the time of their lives they were, Columbus said.

I thought, I have to make a movie out of this, he said.

International Box Office: Fantastic Has A Beast Of An Opening With $1433 Million

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them opened in first place on the international chart with $143.3 million in 63 markets. The film had the biggest opening of the Harry Potter franchise in 16 of those 63 markets, but ironically not in the U.K., where it had its biggest opening. The film debuted in first place there with $18.90 million in 666 theaters. This is the third best in the franchise behind the two DeathlyHallows films. Some of the markets where Fantastic Beasts set the franchise record include South Korea, where it made $10.64 million on 1,431 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $14.15 million. It did the same in Russia with $10.29 million on 1,173 screens and in Brazil with $6.4 million. More…

The Studio Cut Madam Hoochs Character Because They Were Stingy

The first Harry Potter movie had a number of iconic scenes, one of them being Harrys first flying lesson. Moviegoers were introduced to flying by Madam Hooch, the Hogwarts flying instructor and Quidditch referee.

Although her character appeared throughout the rest of the series in the books and remained one of the more prominent professors within the novels, the actress playing Hooch only appeared in The Sorcerers Stone.

According to Zoe Wanamaker, the actress who played Hooch, Warner Bros. was incredibly stingy with her salary. In an interview, she said that the studio would have to up their rates if they wanted her in the second movie.

Clearly, Warner Bros. didnt think that her character was important enough to increase her wages and her character was written out of the franchise.

Released in theaters two decades ago, on Nov. 14, 2001, Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone was the first of an eventual eight-film franchise based on Rowlings seven-book saga about a young wizard attending the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The film which just last year surpassed $1 billion at the global box office after a 4K rerelease in China and other markets would not only launch the careers of then-newcomers Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson as Harry, Ron and Hermione but spawn franchise spinoffs Fantastic Beasts and a Broadway play, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, based on an original story by Rowling, John Tiffany and Jack Thorne.

To mark the films 20th anniversary, Warner Bros. will debut two new Potter-inspired TV projects: a four-part competition series, Harry Potter: Hogwarts Tournament of House, hosted by Helen Mirren and a retrospective special to follow.

Columbus, 63, spoke to The Hollywood Reporter and took a trip down Hogwarts memory lane, reflecting on his approach to adapting Rowlings source material, working with Radcliffe, Watson and Grint, why he eventually left the franchise, and why hed return to direct a Cursed Child adaptation.

Did They Film Lord Of The Rings All At Once

Lord of the Rings trilogy was filmed all at once, with no separation between different movies. The best example of this approach to work is the scene from the Return of the King in which Frodo is sending Sam back home because he believes Sam has betrayed him.

The conversation between the two was filmed almost a year apart. Although the viewers will not notice it unless looking for it, the slight difference in the lighting is telling that the scene was filmed in blocks.

This order of filming was used because Jackson had a clear idea of what he wanted to do with the reference material and what he wanted the movies to be. The majority of the movie was filmed this way but in the end, a bit of additional filming had to be done.

Another contributing factor was the directors decision to film entirely in New Zealand as he felt that the locations were perfect because New Zealand is practically real-life middle earth. To make this possible, at the height of its production the movie had over two thousand four hundred people involved in the filming process.

Analysis: Why Havent There Been Fifty Shades Of Grey Copycats

This weekend the Fifty Shades franchise is expected to surpass $1 billion in total worldwide box office with the release of the final installment, Fifty Shades Freed. All that income comes from films with an estimated combined budget for all three films of $150 million. The last time Hollywood saw this kind of success with an erotic drama/thriller, it created an entire subgenre that ate its way all through the 90s. Yet, after this year, it seems Valentines Day weekend will be left without a Fifty Shades replacement. So why the hesitancy from Hollywood to step up to the challenge this time?

The Actor Playing Crabbe Was Fired

As many fans noticed, Vincent Crabbes character was replaced in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows with Blaise Zabini, another Slytherin from Dracos year. While Blaises character appeared in the books, he wasnt originally in the Room of Requirement scene.

Jamie Waylett, the actor who played Crabbe, was meant to appear in the scene, but he was not asked to return to the franchise since he got arrested in 2009 for growing some illegal substances.

Although he was already removed from the cast, in 2011 he was arrested again for stealing from a supermarket during the London Riots. It seems that the troublesome Slytherin actor was equally troublesome off-set.

Its an exciting proposition, but how long would it take to watch all the Harry Potter movies?

Are you welcoming plans to help pass the time?

Well, theres no better way to spend a day than parking yourself on the sofa with snacks and a film marathon!

During the lockdown, weve seen so many people announce their own marathons across social media, with such franchises as the MCU, Star Wars, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Lord of the Rings, Mission: Impossible and more encouraging people to chronicle the journey in full.

Of course, some need much more than a day to complete , but some may be wondering if its possible to work through the Harry Potter films in a row without having to call it a day towards the end.

Essentially, it boils down to how many hours of the day the entire series takes up.

    Lets take a look

The Making Of The Seven Harrys

As a precautionary measure, six people all take polyjuice potion to transform themselves into Harry look-alikes. Its a wonderful scene to watch, but it was particularly difficult to shoot. In fact, the scene broke the record for the number of takes for all of the Harry Potter movies. The Seven Harrys scene required an astronomical 95 takes to film.

But just how was this scene accomplished? In the behind-the-scenes footage for the film, the cast and crew revealed how the scene was executed. Basically you have a motion control camera and its programmed by computer so that it does exactly the same moves each time. Wed shoot one version with me as one of the characters and we shoot another version with me as another character. And it was very specific stuff so like if youve moved too far an inch to your left, it was unusable because then you would, in theory, be standing on a version of me, Daniel Radcliffe revealed.
