What Year Was The First Harry Potter Movie

Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix

The Origins Of Albus Dumbledore

Harry’s fifth year begins with him being attacked by Dementors in Little Whinging. Later, he finds out that the Ministry of Magic is in denial of Lord Voldemort’s return. Harry is also beset by disturbing and realistic nightmares, while Professor Umbridge, a representative of Minister for Magic Cornelius Fudge, is the new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher. Harry becomes aware that Voldemort is after a prophecy which reveals: “neither can live while the other survives.” The rebellion involving the students of Hogwarts, secret organisation Order of the Phoenix, the Ministry of Magic, and the Death Eaters begins.

Design And Special Effects

Judianna Makovsky served as the costume designer. She re-designed the Quidditch robes, having initially planned to use those shown on the cover of the American book, but deemed them “a mess.” Instead, she dressed the Quidditch players in “preppie sweaters, 19th-century fencing breeches and arm guards.” Production designer Stuart Craig built the sets at Leavesden Studios, including Hogwarts Great Hall, basing it on many English cathedrals. Although originally asked to use an existing old street to film the Diagon Alley scenes, Craig decided to build his own set, comprising Tudor, Georgian and Queen Anne architecture.

Columbus originally planned to use both animatronics and CGI animation to create the magical creatures, including Fluffy. Nick Dudman, who worked on Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace, was given the task of creating the needed prosthetics, with Jim Henson’s Creature Shop providing creature effects. John Coppinger stated that the magical creatures that needed to be created had to be designed multiple times. The film features nearly 600 special effects shots, involving numerous companies. Industrial Light & Magic created Lord Voldemort‘s face on the back of Quirrell, Rhythm & Hues animated Norbert and Sony Pictures Imageworks produced the Quidditch scenes.

Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part 2

The final movie in the initial Harry Potter franchise came in 2011 as Harry Potter, and his friends joined forces with the wizards that had survived the Death Eaters to this point. It was the Battle of Hogwarts, and everyone gathered to take on the villains and save their school.

Did you spot this father and son duo?

Domhnall Gleeson, who plays Bill Weasley in the film, is actually the son of Brendan Gleeson, who plays Mad Eye Moody.

The Irish actors both appeared in the same movie together, although their roles were very different.

Since then Domhnall has gone on to experience a lot of success in Hollywood.

Hes now part of another big franchise Star Wars but his dreams came true during filming for Harry Potter after he got to act alongside his dear old dad.

Speaking about the effects of his career on his family, Brendan recently stated in an interview that:

You have to be true to the work but at the same time I dont want to lose my family.

If you are working with family, well you have to put the family at the top of the tree.

You dont want the work to suffer and so it can get a bit ropey.

Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix Set In 1995/96

The Order Of The Phoenix was the longest of all the Potter books, and it got impressively condensed into the shortest of all the movies. However, to many, that is the biggest issue of the film.

It takes place, once again, at Hogwarts, during Harry’s fifth year, where Hogwarts is a very different place under the Ministry of Magic control. It lacks a lot of what the book does brilliantly, but there is no denying how entertaining it can be, and that whole final stretch is terrific.

Completion Of The Series

In December 2005, Rowling stated on her web site, “2006 will be the year when I write the final book in the Harry Potter series.” Updates then followed in her online diary chronicling the progress of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, with the release date of 21 July 2007. The book itself was finished on 11 January 2007 in the Balmoral Hotel, Edinburgh, where she scrawled a message on the back of a bust of Hermes. It read: “J. K. Rowling finished writing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows in this room on 11 January 2007.”

Rowling herself has stated that the last chapter of the final book was completed “in something like 1990”. In June 2006, Rowling, on an appearance on the British talk show Richard & Judy, announced that the chapter had been modified as one character “got a reprieve” and two others who previously survived the story had in fact been killed. On 28 March 2007, the cover art for the Bloomsbury Adult and Child versions and the Scholastic version were released.

In September 2012, Rowling mentioned in an interview that she might go back to make a “director’s cut” of two of the existing Harry Potter books.

Jason Isaacs Almost Didnt Sign On For The Film

Jason Isaacs nearly didnt sign up to the film because he was worried about his involvement in the main storyline. Imagine that!

Fans will remember that, at the end of The Order of the Phoenix, Lucius Malfoy is in prison.

Therefore Jason Isaacs feared that he wouldnt get much screen time.

Instead he went straight to the source and reportedly begged J.K. Rowling to write him back in!

The author subsequently reassured him that hed be out of prison before the end of the first chapter.

Luckily in real life, the actor wasnt overstepping his mark because the pair are actually quite close and Isaacs refers to the author as Jo.

Were definitely glad that he got more screen time as Lucius!

Differences From The Book

In the first Harry Potter movie, Harry, Ron, and Hermione ...

Prisoner of Azkaban was, at the time of publication, the series’ longest book. The increasing plot complexity necessitated a looser adaptation of the book’s finer plot lines and back-story. The connection between Harry’s parents and the Marauder’s Map is only briefly mentioned, as is Remus Lupin‘s association to the map. Additionally, it was never mentioned who the Marauders were or who the nicknames Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot, and Prongs referred to. Some exposition was removed for dramatic effect: both the Shrieking Shack and Scabbers the rat are mentioned only very briefly in the film, while they receive a more thorough coverage in the novel. Most of Sirius Black‘s back story is also cut, with no mention of how he escaped from Azkaban.

On account of pace and time considerations, the film glosses over detailed descriptions of magical education. Only one Hippogriff, Buckbeak, is seen, and only Malfoy and Harry are seen interacting with the Hippogriff during Care of Magical Creatures lessons, and most other lessons, including all of Snape‘s Potions classes, were cut from the film. The Fidelius Charm’s complicated description is removed entirely from the film, with no explanation given of exactly how Sirius is supposed to have betrayed the Potters to Lord Voldemort. Many of this scene’s lines are redistributed amongst Cornelius Fudge and Minerva McGonagall in compensation, McGonagall’s exposition of the Animagus transformation is instead given by Snape.

Jk Rowling Was Offered The Role Of Lily Potter

J.K. Rowling could have had a minor part in her own film franchise.

The best-selling author herself was offered the part of Lily Potter in the scene where Harry sees his parents in the Mirror of Erised.

Rowling has later stated that this was one of her favourite chapters in the books, so producers were convinced that she would accept the role.

However, the author turned it down and the part went instead to Geraldine Somerville.

Rowling explained that she turned down the role of Lily because she wasnt cut out to be an actress and was convinced that shed mess up the scene somehow.

Instead Somerville did an excellent job in the role so we think everything worked out for the best!

J K Rowling would probably agree too.

Instead shes continued to write and has gone on to produce several books outside the Harry Potter universe.

Good for her!

He Also Shared Some Personal Details And Stories From His Experience On Set

When he first saw Professor McGonagall on screen, Felton sighed and said, “She’s my hero.” It’s unclear if he meant the character or the actor who plays her, Dame Maggie Smith.

During his second video on Wednesday, the actor also shared that he got to keep one of the envelopes from the scene where the owls bombard the Dursley house while trying to deliver Harry his Hogwarts letter.

Felton has yet to see his own character, Draco Malfoy, on screen, but he should be encountering him soon. The character’s first scene is on the Hogwarts Express, and the actor left off at the scene on Platform 9 3/4.

Alfonso Cuarn Ditched The School Robes

Harry Potter Auditions And How The Cast Landed The Role

Alfonso Cuarón took over directing duties for the Prisoner of Azkaban in 2004.

The new director to the franchise thought that it was unrealistic that students would wear their school robes all the time.

As such, we see our characters in normal clothes much more than the previous two films

He also wanted to capture what a real school was like, so some students can be seen with their ties off, their shirts untucked and not looking their best.

This makes a lot of sense, especially if you remember your old school days when most people paid no attention to following uniform rules.

Harry, Ron and co suddenly became a lot more casual in later films thanks to Cuarón.

Did you notice the change to the costume department?

We think it was a great touch on the directors part and really helped viewers to relate to the main characters more.

Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire Set In 1994/95

Today, mainstream audiences are finally coming around to Robert Pattinson and appreciating him for the fantastic actor he is, acknowledging all the great work he has done post-Twilight. Pre-Twilight, though, he had a great outing in this Potter film.

Of course, Cedric Diggory is not the main focus of the fourth Potter movie but is a crucial element to it. Many fans remain disappointed at the lack of tournament we get to see, which is a fair criticism. However, this movie, set in Harry’s fourth year, is another solid entry to the franchise.

Content That May Disturb Children

Under 8

In addition to the violent scenes mentioned above, this movie contains some scenes that could scare or disturb children under eight. For example:

  • The shadowy/silhouetted image of a cat transforms into a woman.
  • Aunt Petunia and Dudley hold each other and scream hysterically as their house shakes and a storm of magical letters bursts out of the fireplace and swirls around them.
  • Harry, Uncle Vernon, Aunt Petunia and Dudley are in a small cabin. Someone bangs on the wooden door very loudly, then smashes it in. A very large, hairy, wild-looking man comes through the door.
  • The movie features scary characters including goblins, a three-headed dog, a green scaly troll and a centaur.
  • There is a flashback image of Voldemort murdering Harrys parents.
  • Transparent images of ghosts float through the air and through walls at Hogwarts. One ghost almost pulls his own head off. The head stays attached by a thread of skin, with some blood and gore on the neck wound.
  • Harry opens a magical book and a creepy face tries to push its way out while screaming.
  • While doing detention in the forbidden forest, Harry and another boy come across a dead unicorn with a cloaked figure sucking its blood. We see a quick image of silver blood dripping from the sides of the mouth beneath the hood.
  • Professor Quirrell unwraps his turban to reveal Voldemorts scary face pushing out of the back of his head.

From 8-13

Over 13

Most children over 13 are unlikely to be disturbed by anything in this movie.
