Harry’s first Christmas at Hogwarts is a happy one. Its the first time that he gets a few presents of his own, the best of which is a magical heirloom left by his father. He also gets a few other things like a few pence from his aunt Petunia Dursley and a dazzling sweater from Mrs. Weasley. If you read the UK version of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, he receives a “jumper” from Mrs. Weasley.
Once again, this is simply a Britishism being corrected for a US audience – as in the US, a ‘jumper’ is a type of sleeveless dress, and it would be very odd for Mrs Weasley to have sent that to Harry! However, in the UK, a ‘jumper’ is what Americans would call a ‘sweater’.

A new, separate game Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was made for newer consoles in 2003 by Warthog Games, 2 years after the original versions. Its gameplay differed greatly from the other versions, followed the film far more closely than the other games, though it was criticised for reusing the spells and world map from the Chamber of Secrets version of the game.
At school, Harry begins his training as a wizard and learns more about his past. After retrieving a remembrall while riding on a broomstick, for his classmate Neville Longbottom, Harry is appointed seeker of the Gryffindor Quidditch team.
Harry, Ron and Hermione believe that one of their teachers, Professor Snape, is planning to steal the Philosopher’s Stone, a magical object which grants the user immortality, and set out to stop him. The three face a series of obstacles that protect the stone, including a three-head dog, surviving a deadly plant, catching a flying key, playing a life-sized game of Chess and choosing the correct potion to get through a magical fire. Harry, now alone, expects to face Snape but instead finds Professor Quirrell, the Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher. Quirrell removes his turban and reveals that Voldemort was living on the back of his head. Harry retrieves the stone and Voldemort tries to get it from him but touching him burns Quirrell’s skin. Harry passes out from the struggle of the battle.
Dumbledore Wanted To Test Harry & Voldemort With The Sorcerer’s Stone
At the end of Sorcerer’s Stone, Harry suspected while talking with Dumbledore in the Hospital Wing that the headmaster had allowed Harry to go after the Stone and test his strength. Dumbledore confirmed that he felt that Harry had the right to face Voldemort, but his words in later books imply that there was more to it. From the moment that Voldemort acted on Professor Trelawney’s prophecy and Harry survived, Dumbledore had guessed that Harry would be something special. He gave Harry and Voldemort an opening to confront each other at Hogwarts and sat back to watch.
The Sorcerer’s Stone made the perfect bait for Voldemort, who sought to sustain his wandering soul in Harry Potter. So, by allowing Hagrid to bring the Stone to Hogwarts, he guaranteed that the Dark Lord would eventually hear about it. Then, he ensured that Harry could get through by directing the teachers to place easy protections leading up to the Stone. Finally, Dumbledore’s final measure was the Mirror of Erised, which he allowed Harry to discover and told him what it did. The Mirror would test Harry’s intentions while keeping Voldemort from actually getting his hands on the Stone.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone ruined Daniel Radcliffes expectations for what is normal on a film set.
The Great Hall, where he shot many of the scenes from the first of eight films based on the J.K. Rowling series, was a phantasmagoria of detail. Platters of real lamb chops, roasted potatoes and puddings sat alongside 400 hand-lettered menus and for at least one scene hundreds of real, glowing candles. The hall set took 30 people a little over four months to construct.
I can count on the fingers of one hand the number of sets Ive been on since in my career that are of that scale, Radcliffe said in a video interview from his New York apartment in October.
Directed by Chris Columbus, the story of a boy who, upon turning 11, discovers hes a wizard and goes off to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry opened Nov. 16, 2001, and went on to gross more than $1 billion worldwide.
When Radcliffe and the young actors who played his friends, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson , were making the film, they werent just pretending to have the time of their lives they were, Columbus said.
I thought, I have to make a movie out of this, he said.
Luggage On Platform 9 3/4
Harry conspicuously wheels his own luggage rack in Kings Cross Station in order to get to Platform 9 3/4. This rack containing his spellbook and his owl, Hedwig, is called a “cart” in the US Edition of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, while in the UK version, Harry is pushing a “trolley”.

Likewise, the Hogwarts candy cart is called the trolley in the UK version, though, they did choose to keep that verbiage in the US version of the movies as well. This was likely to give more of a British flair to the language, as it’s not a change that would cause confusion.

Was Dumbledore Recklessly Risking Harry’s Life
Dumbledore sometimes acted like a villain in Harry Potter, and looking at many of his actions would make it seem as if he had no regard for the safety of his students. However, Dumbledore had a deeper understanding of the laws of destiny than other wizards and always seemed to know that Harry would survive. Of course, he was also aware that his suspicions could be wrong, so whenever he allowed Harry to test his strength, he let the boy risk his life.
Dumbledore suspected early on that Harry would eventually have to die if Voldemort were to be killed. Still, he knew that Harrys survival had been no accident and that Lily’s sacrifice was the key to how Harry and the Dark Lord’s rivalry would play out. There were always layers of protection surrounding the child, and Dumbledore had a kind of clever omniscience that allowed him to understand that Harry would live. So, while it can be argued that Dumbledore gambling with Harry’s life in Harry Potter was an irresponsible risk, the fact that it all worked out in the end indicates that he knew what he was doing.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone is a 2001 fantasyfilm directed by Chris Columbus and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, based on J. K. Rowling‘s1997 novel of the same name. Philosopher Versus Sorcerer’s Stone
And the most popular question that fans have, concerns the title differences between Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone and Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. It seems strange enough that book publishers are willing to change such minimal details in the books in order to make it more understandable for the children, however having completely separate book titles is something that is rarely done.
The simple fact of the matter is that American publishers think that the word “sorcerer” sounds more enticing and magical than the word “philosopher.” At the time, the belief is that American kids would have more familiarity with the term “sorcerer” than they would “philosopher”, therefore, making it more likely for them to pick up the book at the store.
Uses In Education And Business
Writers on education and business subjects have used the book as an object lesson. Writing about clinical teaching in medical schools, Jennifer Conn contrasted Snape’s technical expertise with his intimidating behaviour towards students. Quidditch coach Madam Hooch on the other hand, illustrated useful techniques in the teaching of physical skills, including breaking down complex actions into sequences of simple ones and helping students to avoid common errors. Joyce Fields wrote that the books illustrate four of the five main topics in a typical first-year sociology class: “sociological concepts including culture, society, and socialisation stratification and social inequality social institutions and social theory“.
Stephen Brown noted that the early Harry Potter books, especially Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, were a runaway success despite inadequate and poorly organised marketing. Brown advised marketing executives to be less preoccupied with rigorous statistical analyses and the “analysis, planning, implementation, and control” model of management. Instead he recommended that they should treat the stories as “a marketing masterclass”, full of enticing products and brand names. For example, a real-world analogue of Bertie Bott’s Every Flavour Beans was introduced under licence in 2000 by toymaker Hasbro.

Design And Special Effects
Judianna Makovsky served as the costume designer. She re-designed the Quidditch robes, having initially planned to use those shown on the cover of the American book, but deemed them “a mess.” Instead, she dressed the Quidditch players in “preppie sweaters, 19th-century fencing breeches and arm guards.” Production designer Stuart Craig built the sets at Leavesden Studios, including Hogwarts Great Hall, basing it on many English cathedrals. Although originally asked to use an existing old street to film the Diagon Alley scenes, Craig decided to build his own set, comprising Tudor, Georgian and Queen Anne architecture.
Columbus originally planned to use both animatronics and CGI animation to create the magical creatures, including Fluffy. Nick Dudman, who worked on Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace, was given the task of creating the needed prosthetics, with Jim Henson’s Creature Shop providing creature effects. John Coppinger stated that the magical creatures that needed to be created had to be designed multiple times. The film features nearly 600 special effects shots, involving numerous companies. Industrial Light & Magic created Lord Voldemort‘s face on the back of Quirrell, Rhythm & Hues animated Norbert and Sony Pictures Imageworks produced the Quidditch scenes.
