On film Harry Potter was portrayed by Daniel Radcliffe, at the time a relatively unknown child actor. His friends Ron and Hermione were played by Rupert Grint and Emma Watson, respectively. Irish actor Richard Harris assumed the role of Dumbledore for the first two films and was replaced after his death by Michael Gambon for the remainder of the series. Voldemort was played by Ralph Fiennes, and his followers included Tom Felton as Draco Malfoy and Helena Bonham Carter as the mad witch Bellatrix Lestrange, among others.

Rowling had long promised an encyclopedia that would index every factoid from her wide-ranging magical universe. In late 2011, it came in a different form than expected: as a website. Some of the entries were illuminating, like the tragic backstory on Professor McGonagall. Others, like the ingredients that go into different potions, were more trivial. Still, it delighted hardcore fans. Since 2011, Pottermore has moved away from the game component and acted more as a depository for Rowling’s material. She’s expanded it, and added things like short stories about the founding of Ilvermorny, the American wizarding school, and a family history for Harry Potter.

Both parts of the stage play’s script have been released in print and digital formats as Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Parts I & II.
The first edition, the Special Rehearsal Edition, corresponded to the script used in the preview shows and was published on 31 July 2016, the date of Harry’s birthday in the series and Rowling’s birthday, as well. Since revisions to the script continued after the book was printed, an edited version was released on 25 July 2017, as the “Definitive Collector’s Edition”. According to CNN, this was the most preordered book of 2016.

JK Rowling has revealed where she started writing the Harry Potter books, contradicting fans who believed for years that Edinburgh was its birthplace.
The Elephant House Cafe in Edinburgh is widely regarded as the place the now 54-year-old author wrote the first of the seven fantasy novels.
While it is true that Rowling used to frequent the cafe in the early days of her writing career, the author revealed yesterday that she actually started the series in London, in a flat above a sports shop in Clapham.
Referring to the sign on Elephant House which reads birthplace of Harry Potter, Rowling tweeted: Id been writing Potter for several years before I ever set foot in this cafe, so its not the birthplace, but I *did* write in there so well let them off!
Rowling then shared a picture of the Clapham flat where she started her writing process. This is the true birthplace of Harry Potter, she said. If you define birthplace as the spot where I put pen to paper for the first time.

She Lived In A Small Flat While Going To Cafes To Write Harry Potter And The Sorcerer’s Stone
Without a job, Rowling visited different Edinburgh cafés and hunkered down to write her first novel on a typewriter. She often brought along Jessica, who slept in a pram next to her.
During that period, Rowling lived off government welfare.
“I couldnt have written this book if I hadnt had a few years where I d been really as poor as its possible to go in the UK without being homeless,” Rowing said in 2012. “We were on welfare, what we call welfare, I would call benefits, for a couple years.”
The experience helped define her political activism later in life. She frequently criticizes politicians who attempt to cut back on government welfare programs. She’s also talked about how the “single mother” label followed her throughout her career, and became the president of Gingerbread, a 100-year-old organization that supports single parents and their children.
“I was a Single Parent, and a ‘Single Parent On Benefits’ to boot. Patronage was almost as hard to bear as stigmatization.” she wrote in an essay. “I would say to any single parent currently feeling the weight of stereotype or stigmatization that I am prouder of my years as a single mother than of any other part of my life.”

The author studied French at the University of Exeter, graduating in 1986. According to her official biography, she “read so widely outside her French and Classics syllabus that she clocked up a fine of £50 for overdue books at the University library.” Her Classics knowledge was later used when she came up with the names for spells in the “Harry Potter” series.
After graduating, Rowling worked at the research desk for Amnesty International, doing translation work. She found the work important “I read hastily scribbled letters smuggled out of totalitarian regimes by men and women who were risking imprisonment to inform the outside world of what was happening to them,” she said but it didn’t suit her, as she said in a later interview.
“I am one of the most disorganized people in the world and, as I later proved, the worst secretary ever,” she said. “All I ever liked about working in offices was being able to type up stories on the computer when no-one was looking. I was never paying much attention in meetings because I was usually scribbling bits of my latest stories in the margins of the pad, or choosing excellent names for the characters.”

She said: Ive actually never said part of this before, it is true that my publisher felt that this was a book that boys would also like and they were definitely keen to unisex me a bit.

Open Letter On Justice And Open Debate
In July 2020, Rowling signed an open letter published in Harper’s Magazine titled “A Letter on Justice and Open Debate“, with 150 other public figures, largely writers and academics. The letter states in part, “The free exchange of information and ideas, the lifeblood of a liberal society, is daily becoming more constricted”, criticises “a vogue for public shaming and ostracism” and “a blinding moral certainty”, warns of fear spreading in the arts and media, and denounces President Donald Trump as “a real threat to democracy”. After learning who also signed the letter, Jennifer Finney Boylan expressed regret over her support, and stated she would not have signed had she known who the other signatories were. Accusations Of Conservative And Sexist Themes
The critic Anthony Holden wrote in The Observer on his experience of judging Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban for the 1999 Whitbread Awards. His overall view of the series was negativeâ”the Potter saga was essentially patronising, very conservative, highly derivative, dispiritingly nostalgic for a bygone Britain.” A review in The Guardian echoed this interpretation and stated that “despite all of the books’ gestures to multiculturalism and gender equality, Harry Potter is a conservative a paternalistic, One-Nation Tory, perhaps, but a Tory nonetheless.”Salon.com critic Christine Schoefer has also criticised the books as sexist, claiming that the series presents a patriarchal world filled with stereotypes and adherence to “the conventional assumption that men do and should run the world”.
When an interviewer suggested her books portrayed a conservative world, Rowling replied, “So I’m told repeatedly. The two groups of people who are constantly thanking me are Wiccans and boarding schools. And really, don’t thank me. I’m not with either of them. New ageism leaves me completely cold, and would never go to boarding school. I went to a comprehensive.”

But she was not able to write it as in the same year, her mother passed away. In 1992, she moved to Portugal to teach English as a foreign language along with different other plans in her life.
