Irish actor Richard Harris assumed the role of Dumbledore for the first two films and was replaced after his death by Michael Gambon for the remainder of the series. Voldemort was played by Ralph Fiennes, and his followers included Tom Felton as Draco Malfoy and Helena Bonham Carter as the mad witch Bellatrix Lestrange, among others.

Then She Released A Treasure Trove Of Trivia

Rowling had long promised an encyclopedia that would index every factoid from her wide-ranging magical universe. In late 2011, it came in a different form than expected: as a website. Pottermore launched as a sort of hybrid game and “Harry Potter” Wikipedia, where users could sign up, get sorted into a Hogwarts house, and win points while also reading bits of information about different elements of the “Harry Potter” universe.

Some of the entries were illuminating, like the tragic backstory on Professor McGonagall. Others, like the ingredients that go into different potions, were more trivial. Still, it delighted hardcore fans. Since 2011, Pottermore has moved away from the game component and acted more as a depository for Rowling’s material. She’s expanded it, and added things like short stories about the founding of Ilvermorny, the American wizarding school, and a family history for Harry Potter.

Both parts of the stage play’s script have been released in print and digital formats as Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Parts I & II.

The first edition, the Special Rehearsal Edition, corresponded to the script used in the preview shows and was published on 31 July 2016, the date of Harry’s birthday in the series and Rowling’s birthday, as well. Since revisions to the script continued after the book was printed, an edited version was released on 25 July 2017, as the “Definitive Collector’s Edition”. According to CNN, this was the most preordered book of 2016.

JK Rowling has revealed where she started writing the Harry Potter books, contradicting fans who believed for years that Edinburgh was its birthplace.

The Elephant House Cafe in Edinburgh is widely regarded as the place the now 54-year-old author wrote the first of the seven fantasy novels.

While it is true that Rowling used to frequent the cafe in the early days of her writing career, the author revealed yesterday that she actually started the series in London, in a flat above a sports shop in Clapham.

Referring to the sign on Elephant House which reads birthplace of Harry Potter, Rowling tweeted: Id been writing Potter for several years before I ever set foot in this cafe, so its not the birthplace, but I *did* write in there so well let them off!

Rowling then shared a picture of the Clapham flat where she started her writing process. This is the true birthplace of Harry Potter, she said. If you define birthplace as the spot where I put pen to paper for the first time.

She Lived In A Small Flat While Going To Cafes To Write Harry Potter And The Sorcerer’s Stone

Without a job, Rowling visited different Edinburgh cafés and hunkered down to write her first novel on a typewriter. She often brought along Jessica, who slept in a pram next to her.

During that period, Rowling lived off government welfare.

“I couldnt have written this book if I hadnt had a few years where I d been really as poor as its possible to go in the UK without being homeless,” Rowing said in 2012. “We were on welfare, what we call welfare, I would call benefits, for a couple years.”

The experience helped define her political activism later in life. She frequently criticizes politicians who attempt to cut back on government welfare programs. She’s also talked about how the “single mother” label followed her throughout her career, and became the president of Gingerbread, a 100-year-old organization that supports single parents and their children.

“I was a Single Parent, and a ‘Single Parent On Benefits’ to boot. Patronage was almost as hard to bear as stigmatization.” she wrote in an essay. “I would say to any single parent currently feeling the weight of stereotype or stigmatization that I am prouder of my years as a single mother than of any other part of my life.”

After Graduating From College She Had A Stint Working For Amnesty International

The author studied French at the University of Exeter, graduating in 1986. According to her official biography, she “read so widely outside her French and Classics syllabus that she clocked up a fine of £50 for overdue books at the University library.” Her Classics knowledge was later used when she came up with the names for spells in the “Harry Potter” series.

After graduating, Rowling worked at the research desk for Amnesty International, doing translation work. She found the work important “I read hastily scribbled letters smuggled out of totalitarian regimes by men and women who were risking imprisonment to inform the outside world of what was happening to them,” she said but it didn’t suit her, as she said in a later interview.

“I am one of the most disorganized people in the world and, as I later proved, the worst secretary ever,” she said. “All I ever liked about working in offices was being able to type up stories on the computer when no-one was looking. I was never paying much attention in meetings because I was usually scribbling bits of my latest stories in the margins of the pad, or choosing excellent names for the characters.”

JK Rowling has revealed she did not use her full name when publishing the first Harry Potter book because she was paranoid following a difficult marriage

JK Rowling has revealed she did not use her full name when publishing the first Harry Potter book because she was paranoid following a difficult marriage.

The author previously said she decided against including Joanne her real name because the publisher feared an audience of young boys would not want to read books by a woman.

Rowling has now revealed another reason for the change to her name on the cover of 1997s Harry Potter And The Philosophers Stone.

Harry Potter author JK Rowling has revealed paranoia over her first marriage stopped her putting her full name on the books that made her famous

Speaking to Simon Armitage on his The Poet Laureate Has Gone To His Shed podcast, the writer said she did not want to catch the attention of her Portuguese first husband, Jorge Arantes, who she married in 1992 before splitting a year later.

She said: Ive actually never said part of this before, it is true that my publisher felt that this was a book that boys would also like and they were definitely keen to unisex me a bit.

This is the bit Ive never actually said before: I actually wanted to be published under a completely different name because Id come out of this very difficult marriage and I was a little bit paranoid.

TRANS activists came down on Harry Potter author JK Rowling for a tweet she posted in 2020.

In July 2021, she claimed she was still receiving backlash, and even death threats, from her comments.

The Harry Potter author questioned womens safety in changing rooms in 2020.

She was accused of transphobia last summer when replying to an article with the headline: Opinion: Creating a more equal post Covid-19 world for people who menstruate.

She tweeted: People who menstruate. Im sure there used to be a word for those people. Someone help me out. Wumben? Wimpund? Woomud?

Several people hit back to point out it was not only women born women who menstruate.

Her remarks led to an angry backlash, including criticism from Potter actors Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint and Eddie Redmayne.

Rowling, who is said to be worth hundreds of millions, responded: My life has been shaped by being female.

“I do not believe its hateful to say so.

Open Letter On Justice And Open Debate

In July 2020, Rowling signed an open letter published in Harper’s Magazine titled “A Letter on Justice and Open Debate“, with 150 other public figures, largely writers and academics. The letter states in part, “The free exchange of information and ideas, the lifeblood of a liberal society, is daily becoming more constricted”, criticises “a vogue for public shaming and ostracism” and “a blinding moral certainty”, warns of fear spreading in the arts and media, and denounces President Donald Trump as “a real threat to democracy”. The letter sparked much debate about cancel culture . Rowling stated she was proud to sign the letter to defend “open debate and freedom of thought and speech”.

Objections to the letter included accusations that Rowling and the other signatories had powerful means to publish their opinions, and that it was disingenuous to attempt to silence others who might offer criticism of their views. Some thought that Rowling was trying to specifically suppress criticism about her statements concerning transgender topics. After learning who also signed the letter, Jennifer Finney Boylan expressed regret over her support, and stated she would not have signed had she known who the other signatories were. Rowling then sarcastically tweeted that Boylan should incur public penance for the association with her.

The Names Of The Houses At Hogwarts Were Originally Written On A Barf Bag

Rowling likes to write her first drafts in longhand, preferably in black ink. Sometimes she found herself inspired, but short on paper. So she wrote on anything she could find. She told Amazon UK that she used a truly novel paper substitute when she was concocting the name of the Hogwarts houses: The names of the Hogwarts Houses were created on the back of an aeroplane sick bag. Yes, it was empty.

Rowling Was Heavily Involved With The Wizarding World Of Harry Potter At Universal Studios Orlando

Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling accused of making ...

In 2010, Universal Studios opened The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, a theme park that recreated Hogsmeade, let attendants pick a magical wand, and ride a roller coaster through Hogwarts or on a Hippogriff. It’s so popular that attendance at Universal Studios increased by 66% at its first full year, and it’s now within striking distance of Disney, which ruled the theme park industry for decades.

Bloomberg reported that Rowling involved herself in every minutiae of the project, banning hamburgers, pizza, and Coca-Cola and instead ensuring that only British-style food would be served. Engineers proclaimed Rowling’s sketches for Hogsmeade’s wonky, surrealistic buildings as architecturally impossible, but eventually they figured it out anyway.

Accusations Of Conservative And Sexist Themes

The critic Anthony Holden wrote in The Observer on his experience of judging Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban for the 1999 Whitbread Awards. His overall view of the series was negativeâ”the Potter saga was essentially patronising, very conservative, highly derivative, dispiritingly nostalgic for a bygone Britain.” A review in The Guardian echoed this interpretation and stated that “despite all of the books’ gestures to multiculturalism and gender equality, Harry Potter is a conservative a paternalistic, One-Nation Tory, perhaps, but a Tory nonetheless.” critic Christine Schoefer has also criticised the books as sexist, claiming that the series presents a patriarchal world filled with stereotypes and adherence to “the conventional assumption that men do and should run the world”.

When an interviewer suggested her books portrayed a conservative world, Rowling replied, “So I’m told repeatedly. The two groups of people who are constantly thanking me are Wiccans and boarding schools. And really, don’t thank me. I’m not with either of them. New ageism leaves me completely cold, and would never go to boarding school. I went to a comprehensive.”

Book Seven: Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows

Even with enormously high expectations, book six was a success, and Rowling immediately began working on the seventh.

Deathly Hallows was the series finale, but Rowling had many other responsibilities to fulfill besides writing: being a mother to three children, giving interviews, overseeing the Harry Potter movies, and running her charities, to name only a few.

Ironically, Rowlings notoriety and wealth had cut her writing time in halffrom five days a week to two and a half:

There are timesand I dont want to sound ungratefulwhen I would gladly give back some of the money in exchange for time and peace to write.

The media marathon hadnt slowed down either, which was exceptionally draining for her:

Fame is a very odd and very isolating experience. And I know some people crave it. A lot of people crave it. I find that very hard to understand. Really. It is incredibly isolating and it puts a great strain on your relationships.

One of the medias particular criticisms of Rowling was her appearance:

I found it very difficult, when I first became well known, to read criticism about how I look, how messy my hair was, and how generally unkempt I look.

Rowling worried about how such criticisms might affect her children:

Somehow, in the middle of all this cacophony, Rowling finished her seven-book Harry Potter series. After nearly two decades, it was over. Rowling said:

Politics Of J K Rowling

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s StoneWhite House

The British author J. K. Rowling, writer of Harry Potter and other Wizarding World works, has shared a variety of political views. Rowling stated in 2000 that she is left-wing and said “there is a certain amount of political stuff in . But I also feel that every reader will bring his own agenda to the book. People who send their children to boarding schools seem to feel that I’m on their side. I’m not. Practicing Wiccans think I’m also a witch. I’m not.” In 2002, she said her biggest literary influence was muckrakerJessica Mitford, whom she described as a “self-taught socialist”.

Rowling has garnered attention for her support of the Labour Party under Gordon Brown and her criticism of the party under Jeremy Corbyn, as well as her opposition to the Conservative Party and the Republican Party under Donald Trump. She opposed Scottish independence in a 2014 referendum and Brexit during the 2016 referendum to leave the European Union.

Since late 2019, Rowling has publicly voiced her opinions on transgender people and related civil rights. These views have been criticised as transphobic by LGBT rights organisations and some feminists, but have received support from other feminists.
