The Quidditch World Cup
- The Veela mascots are omitted from the film entirely, while Leprechauns as mascots was minimised heavily. Instead, the Irish National Quidditch team creates a glittering firework of a leprechaun, which is obliterated by the Bulgarian National Quidditch team flying through it.
- The film only shows the teams entering the pitch and Fudge starting the match, with just a vague reference in the following scenes as to who “won” the match .
- The Weasleys only stand in the normal areas and not in the Top Box, and appear to support both sides.
- Narcissa Malfoy does not appear in the film.
- The scene in which the Death Eaters attack the camp is slightly different:
- In the film, the family is already awake and dancing around the tent, while in the book, they are all asleep until Arthur Weasley goes and wakes them up.
- It was originally filmed with Arthur needing to go and wake people up.
Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire
|Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire|
|Theatrical release poster|
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire is a 2005 fantasy film directed by Mike Newell and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, based on the 2000 novel of the same name. Produced by David Heyman and written by Steve Kloves, it is the sequel to Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and the fourth instalment in the Harry Potter film series. The film stars Daniel Radcliffe as Harry Potter, alongside Rupert Grint and Emma Watson as Harry’s best friends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger respectively. Its story follows Harry’s fourth year at Hogwarts as he is chosen by the Goblet of Fire to compete in the Triwizard Tournament.
Principal photography began in early 2004, and the film premiered worldwide on 18 November 2005. Five days following release, it had earned over US$102 million at the North American box office, the third-highest first-weekend tally for a Harry Potter film behind Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 and Part 2. Goblet of Fire enjoyed an immensely successful run at the box office, grossing $896 million worldwide, the highest-grossing film of 2005 and the sixth-highest-grossing film in the series.
/10 Barty Crouch Jr’s Fate
Barty Crouch Jr. suffers a dark fate in the book, as he receives a Dementor’s Kiss, meaning that his soul is forever sucked out of his body. This makes him nothing more than a living vegetable and he is unable to testify before the Wizengamot or provide any useful information about Voldemort and his return to power.
The movie makes it clear that Crouch Jr. will be sent to Azkaban. The audience is never shown or told that he receives a Dementor’s Kiss in any of the films, including The Goblet of Fire.

Differences From The Book
With the Goblet of Fire novel almost twice the length of Prisoner of Azkaban, the writers and producers reduced certain scenes and concepts to make the transition from page to screen. Director Mike Newell described the problem as one of “compressing a huge book into the compass of a movie”. This was achieved by “putting aside” all the components of the novel which did not directly relate to Harry and his journey.
Goblet of Fire is the first film adaptation not to begin at Privet Drive after the opening sequence, Harry awakens at the Burrow on the morning of the Quidditch World Cup.
The gameplay at the Quidditch World Cup was removed for timing reasons, leaving an abrupt temporal jump that some reviewers considered awkward or “rushed”. In the book, Harry and many of the Weasleys support Ireland, while in the film Harry and Ron support Bulgaria. Nonetheless, both of them admire the Bulgarian seeker Viktor Krum.
The Parting Of The Ways
- The fate of Barty Crouch Jnr is unknown, as he is last seen being held prisoner by his former comrade Severus Snape and his being kissed was a critical part of Fudge’s denial that Voldemort was back.
- Since the Hospital Wing scene was omitted, in which Fudge is claimed to have performed the Dementor’s Kiss and was doubting the story purported by Dumbledore and Harry, it creates a strange consistency error in the next film that just makes it seem like Fudge wanted to create a random smear campaign against Harry, even though he had not been told that Voldemort had returned at any point, yet he seemed to already know this during Harry’s later hearing. However, the only hint of the Ministry wishing to cover up the truth was mentioned during Dumbledore’s memorial speech for Cedric.

Aboard The Hogwarts Express
- The scenes on the Hogwarts Express are slightly different in the film. In the book, the compartment that the trio are sitting in is right next to Draco Malfoy, who overhears their conversations and drops subtle hints about the Triwizard Tournament. Additionally, several of Harry’s friends enter the compartment before Malfoy enters.
- Ron attempts to purchase a packet of Drooble’s Best Blowing Gum and a Liquorice Wand, but only has enough for the Drooble’s.

/10 Rita Skeeter As An Animagus
While the sensationalist journalist Rita Skeeter does appear in the film, she plays a smaller role than in the book. The movie also omits the most intriguing part of her story which is that she is an unregistered Animagus who can transform herself into a beetle.
Being a beetle allows her to eavesdrop on all manner of conversations and find juicy tidbits for her stories. Hermione uncovers the truth, and the threat of reporting Rita’s unregistered Animagus status to the Ministry puts her in check for the time being.
Costume And Set Design
Costume designer returned as costume designer for Goblet of Fire.:39 Temime made the Beauxbatons uniforms out of french blue silk,:13 which stood out from the muted colours of the other schools. The fabric of the uniforms “clings to their form, in complete contrast to the restrictive uniforms the Hogwarts girls wear.” The hat was designed by millinerPhilip Treacy. The Durmstrang uniform was made of thick wool,:13 with crimson robes and fur hats and capes. Temime drew inspiration from Habsburg and Russian folklore. For the Yule Ball, Temime created more than 300 costumes. Hermione’s dress, which took three months to make, was designed to be a “fairy-tale dress”, balancing “sweetness and allure” and keeping it “very prudish”, in order for it to be “slightly sexy” while still appropriate for a teenager. Moody’s coat was inspired by spaghetti westerns, with a team spending a week “aging and distressing the coat to give it a lifetime’s worth of wear.”
The local area surrounding Leavesden Studios was used for the site of the Quidditch World Cup, filmed in Ivinghoe Beacon, and Ashridge Wood, while the cliff where the characters land with the Portkey was located in Seven Sisters Country Park in Seaford, East Sussex.Kirby wires were used to suspend the actors in the air during the landing scene.

/10 Dumbledore’s Reaction To Harry Putting His Name In The Goblet Of Fire
Fans love to make fun of Dumbledore’s over-the-top reaction to Harry putting his name into the Goblet of Fire. He runs toward Harry, grabs him by the shoulders, and accusingly shouts at him.
This is a stark contrast to Dumbledore calmly asking this question in the book. It’s a strange moment in the film, as it blatantly contradicts Dumbledore’s normally composed, compassionate, and calculated personality.
The Madness Of Mr Crouch
- Crouch Snr’s death is portrayed a little differently in the film. Instead of being killed simply for escaping and to be prevented from warning Dumbledore, he is killed by Moody to hide the fact that Crouch Snr had discovered who Moody actually was. Additionally, his body is found by Harry while hiking with Ron, Hermione and Hagrid, rather than being eradicated and transfigured into a bone to cover up his death.

/10 Neville Gives Harry The Gillyweed Instead Of Dobby
Harry needs outside help to figure out how to breathe underwater during the Second Task of the Triwizard Tournament. The book has that help come in the form of Dobby as he gives Harry Gillyweed, a magical plant that will allow Harry to breathe underwater. Barty Crouch Jr.–while disguised as Mad-Eye Moody–manipulates Dobby into stealing the Gillyweed to ensure that Harry will make it through the Second Task.
In the movie, Neville is the one to give Harry the Gillyweed instead. Barty Crouch Jr. gives Neville a book that he knows will give Neville the idea for the Gillyweed.
/10 Beauxbatons And Durmstrang
The movie depicts Beauxbatons as an all-girls school and Durmstrang as an all-boys school. This is not true in the books, as there are male and female students at both Beauxbatons and Durmstrang.
In fact, one of Beauxbatons’ most famous alumni is the legendary alchemist Nicolas Flamel. The film’s gender-stereotyped depiction of the schools makes them seem more one-dimensional than they actually are.

The Weighing Of The Wands
- Harry and Draco’s attempted attacks on each other with the spells Furnunculus and Densaugeo, respectively, are omitted.
- Harry receives the letter from Sirius in the Gryffindor Tower in the book, but in the film, he receives it in the Owlery. Additionally, the owl in the film has a tendency to bite people, which the owl in the book does not do.

- Most of the scenes that take place in the Burrow after the World Cup are omitted from the film, with the newspaper report about “Ministry Messups” being mentioned by Hermione on the train to Hogwarts instead.
- Ron receives his dress robes via Errol in the film from Nigel Wolpert, rather than being given to him by Mrs Weasley, as she was omitted.

/10 Missing Obstacles From The Third Task
The book features a number of difficult obstacles during the Third Task of the Triwizard Tournament, most of which aren’t included in the movie. There is a Sphinx guarding the closest route to the Triwizard Cup, who will only move aside and refrain from attacking if a riddle is answered correctly.
Other obstacles include Blast-Ended Skrewts, Boggarts, an Acromantula, and a golden mist that turns things upside down. Omitting all these obstacles makes the Third Task much less exciting in the movie.
