Which Side Is Harry Potter’s Scar On

It Was The First Clue To His Connection With Voldemort

Dumbledore was a very clever guy its part of the reason why hes considered one of the greatest wizards of all time. Somebody with his immense amount of brainpower doesnt need much more than the vaguest of hints to pull together a fully-fledged not to mention accurate theory.

Harrys scar is a perfect example of Dumbledores knack for using a minor clue to tease out a major, game-changing revelation. In Order of the Phoenix, Albus divulges that the moment he first saw the lightning bolt-shaped cut on baby Harrys head, he instantly surmised that it signified a lasting connection between the boy wizard and Voldemort.

Fast forward 15 years, and Dumbledores guess was proven correct, when a unique mental bond was discovered to exist between Harry and the Dark Lord. Now, lesser wizards would have chalked up Harrys increasingly surly, temperamental demeanour solely to him being a teenager.

Thanks to the scar, Dumbledore knew that Harrys volatile moods were an indication that Voldemort was capable of reading and even invading the Boy Who Liveds mind. Armed with this knowledge, Dumbledore was able to take steps to guard against a possessed Harry compromising the heroic efforts of the Order of the Phoenix although it did mean keeping the poor kid at arms length.

The Pain Is Actually Caused By:

Harrys scar usually hurts when he senses danger related to Voldemort but the reason this happens is because of the fragment of Voldemorts soul that resides inside Harry. This fragment caused Harry the pain and after the part of Voldemorts soul inside Harry was killed, the pain ended and the scar did not hurt. In the cursed child however it hurts again.

It’s Not In The Center Of Harry’s Forehead

Everyone knows that Harrys scar is located on his forehead but exactly where on his forehead is a subject of some confusion. As with many hotly debated topics in Harry Potter canon, the issue here stems from a discrepancy between the books and the movies.

However, this may well be the only instance where JK Rowling has recognized the film franchise as being closer to her vision for the character than the books.

See, the cover art for both the US and UK editions of the Harry Potter novels generally depicts Harrys scar as near the center of his forehead especially the covers by Mary GrandPré, which always place it smack bang in the middle.

Conversely, in the Harry Potter movies, actor Daniel Radcliffe displays his lightning bolt blemish directly above his right eye. Why is it so off-centrer? Because thats where Rowling told the filmmakers it belonged!

Funnily enough, the author never explicitly specifies in the books themselves where on Harrys forehead his scar can be found. That said, there are clues such as a reference to Harry feeling a stab of pain above his right eye in Order of the Phoenix that confirm that Rowling had its askew alignment in mind when crafting the series.

Growing up with the Dursleys, Harrys scar was The only thing Harry liked about his own appearance. But once he met Hagrid, Harrys relationship with his scar began to change. Not only did he find out that it was a mark made by Dark magic and by his parents murderer, but he also realised that it was a mark that made him recognisable. Time and time again through Philosophers Stone, it was Harrys scar that identified him as the Boy Who Lived, identified him as an orphan, or even a victim, of Lord Voldemort. Harrys scar also changed from dormant to active throughout the first book. Whilst he was growing up, it was merely part of his appearance, but soon after his arrival at Hogwarts it started to cause him physical pain. With his entry into the wizarding world, it was almost as though the scar came alive, and with its awakening came a searing pain in Harrys forehead that would follow him for many years to come.

So Whats The Deal With Harrys Scar

Before we talk about Harrys scar, its important to understand the relationship between him and the original villain in his timeline, Lord Voldemort.

Warning! Spoilers ahead.

Voldemort was an all-powerful dark wizard that waged terror on the wizards of Great Britain. In time, he discovers a prophecy about a boy that will someday be born to defeat him. Voldemort then starts to look further into this prediction but discovers that he only has a fragment of the prophecy, not the entire thing.

To make matters even more complicated, when Voldemort looked further into the prophecy, he found out that there were actually two baby boys that it could be referring to: Neville Longbottom and Harry Potter. Voldemort went after the latter, not realising that once he tried to kill Harry Potter with Avada Kedavra he would be destroyed in the process.

Harry survived with nothing more than a lightning scar on his forehead, and Voldemort was seemingly vanquished

It Changes Position Throughout The Movies

As weve already explained previously, its actually the Harry Potter movies that gets the placement of the boy wizards scar correct. At the same time, across all eight movies in which Harry appears, that little lightning bolt never appears in quite the same part of his forehead every time.

This shouldnt come as much of a shock, when you think about it. The make-up artists who worked on the franchise were required to re-apply the scar prosthesis to the faces of actor Daniel Radcliffe and his stunt doubles a gob-smacking 5,800 times in total.

As such, despite the very best of efforts to maintain continuity, its totally understandable that Harrys scar while still remaining above his right eye would move slightly between scenes.

Given that each Harry Potter flick was filmed out of order, this does lead to instances where the scar prosthesis shifts positions dramatically between shots.

All that said, without a doubt the most obvious not to mention hardest to ignore issue surrounding Harrys scar on the big screen is those occasions when its absent. Thats right, there are a handful of brief moments scattered throughout the franchise when his scar vanishes entirely!

They Often Messed Up In Movies:

In the movies there were more than a few scenes where the position of the scar changed which was simply a careless mistake but occurred too often. It was probably the mistake of the makeup department and even though it is hard to notice this little detail in the movies, fans have noticed and pointed the mistake out.

Does The Scar Do Anything

Why does Prince William have a Harry Potter style scar on his head?

Not on its own. The lightning scar on Harrys forehead was more or less just something that he had during his early childhood when he wasnt aware of his magical ancestry. But after the events of Philosophers Stone, his scar starts to twinge and hurt.

Harry discovers in Prisoner Of Azkaban the story behind his parents murder, which leads to Voldemorts resurrection in Goblet Of Fire where the scar acts as an alarm of sorts, signalling when Voldemort or his influence was near Harry.

More than that, the scar represents the connection between Harry and Voldemort: particularly in how the two of them are destined to destroy each other eventually. A large part of the latter books deals with how Harry struggles to prevent Voldermorts influence on his life and mental psyche, and his scar was always a good indicator of when this presence was particularly powerful.

Eventually, good triumphs over evil and Harry finally destroys Voldemort as prophesied. The scar doesnt disappear with his defeat, but it doesnt twinge or hurt anymore, giving Harry the assurance that Voldemort is gone for good.

Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows

A poignant moment at Bill and Fleurs wedding near the beginning of Deathly Hallows was Harry harking back to time spent with Ginny at the end of Half-Blood Prince. Watching the ceremony, Harry equated having a normal life, with one without a scar: he had been stealing shining hours from a normal persons life, a person without a lightning-shaped scar on his forehead … Harrys relationship with his scar at this point was not one he prized it hadnt been for a long time but one that he wished he didnt have. The scar was now intrinsically linked to finding the Horcruxes, destroying Voldemort, and walking the path Dumbledore set for him.

Interestingly in Deathly Hallows, the connection with Voldemorts thoughts and even actions that so plagued Harry in Order of the Phoenix, started to become a source of strength and knowledge for him. He used the insights into You-Know-Whos emotions and whereabouts to assist in his own hunt for the Horcruxes and Hallows. For the first time since Philosophers Stone, Harrys relationship with his scar became slightly more positive, useful a warning, again. And then, as he buried Dobby, Harry gained something else: control On Harry dug, deeper and deeper into the hard, cold earth, subsuming his grief in sweat, denying the pain in his scar.

It Portrayed Harrys Connection To Voldemort:

Earlier in the movies there are moments when Harrys scar hurts and he can sense danger. He usually feels the pain when Voldemort is either planning something malicious or about to attack him. This portrayed the connection between Harry and Voldemort from the beginning and even though it wasnt unveiled by then why there was a connection but the hints were always there.

Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire

In Prisoner of Azkaban the scar is on the wrong side in ...

Goblet of Fire was the first time that the pain in Harrys scar caused him real anxiety. In his first year at Hogwarts, hed put his scar hurting down to being a warning and then, of course, hed come face-to-face with Lord Voldemort, which had made sense of it all. But in Goblet of Fire his scar started to hurt whilst he was in Privet Drive, with no Voldemort in sight. It was something new and more threatening, and Harrys relationship with his scar shifted again. But despite this, Harrys scar hurting was something he first tried to keep to himself at the beginning of Goblet of Fire he didnt want to worry Ron, Hermione, even Dumbledore the pain alienated him, and he isolated himself with it though he was unable to keep his friends in the dark for long even though he might have preferred to. The pain, coupled by his dreams that seemed to link to Voldemort, started to mean that more than ever Harrys scar was becoming a living link to Lord Voldemort. And when he was finally confronted with He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named in the graveyard, the pain in Harrys scar was excruciating, unbearable something that Lord Voldemort could use against him.

The scar had not pained Harry for nineteen years. All was well.
The connection with Voldemort was destroyed

Although Harry never mastered Occlumency, he did eventually learn to exert moderate control over the connection between himself and Voldemort. While searching for the Horcruxes with Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, he felt his scar burn many times, on the occasions when Voldemort was angry, and was able to glimpse his thoughts and perceptions at those times. For example, when Harry questioned Mr Ollivander about the existence of the Elder Wand, he had seen a vision from the past in which Ollivander was telling Voldemort that Gregorovitch had the Elder Wand. He also saw Voldemort ordering Draco Malfoy to torture Thorfinn Rowle through Voldemort’s eyes. When Harry focused on feelings associated with love, such as his anguish over Hermione being tortured by Bellatrix Lestrange or his grief over Dobby‘s death, he was able to block out his link to Voldemort.

It Was Added To Stained

Part of the joy of being a crewmember on a blockbuster film series like the Harry Potter franchise is sneaking in goofy background gags. These fun little inclusions arent intended to call attention to themselves after all, if they were easily noticed, they would distract the audience but provide an extra layer of detail for eagle-eyed fans.

One such in-joke can be seen on the Marauders Map prop introduced in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Here, the visual effects artists responsible for animating the Maps magical surface intentionally misspelled the name Moony as Mooney. Why did they knowingly commit this error? As a shout-out to their boss, visual effects supervisor Karl Mooney, of course!

On the whole, however, these gags are usually much harder to spot and more than a few dont even make it on-screen. Such was the case with a cheeky tip of the hat to Harry Potters famous scar, which was added to the windows of Gloucester Cathedral.

Before shooting began on Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone, the films set dressers were tasked with transforming the Cathedral which doubled as Hogwarts into a more magical environment. This extended to its ornate stained-glass windows, with alterations made including adding wizarding clothing to Adam and Eve as well as lightning bolt scars for good measure.

It Was Supposed To Be The Last Word In The Series

JK Rowling had the overall narrative for all seven Harry Potter novels planned out far in advance of sitting down to actually write each individual book. Thats how she was able set-up so many plot threads early on in the series, only for them to pay off further down the line.

Sure, things changed along the way like how Rons father Arthur was set to lose his life in Order of the Phoenix, only to be spared by the author at the eleventh hour. But by and large, everything pretty much went down the way Rowling originally mapped it out.

As youd expect given the intricate plotting that characterizes the books, Rowling prepped many chapters in impressively granular detail to the point of even roughing out some of the prose. Famously, this included the epilogue of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, with the author long maintaining in the lead-up to its release that the final word would be scar.

Right up until the final revisions on Deathly Hallows, the last word in the series did indeed refer to Harrys iconic facial blemish.

Ultimately, Rowling decided to re-work the text to more clearly convey her intended meaning, and Deathly Hallows wraps up with the word well instead.
