In an unexepcted development, all eight movies in the Harry Potter series are already available to stream through HBO Max on its launch day.
Surprisingly, all eight movies in the Harry Potter series are available to stream through HBO Max on its launch day. Released from 2001 to 2011, the film adaptations of J.K. Rowling’s best-selling fantasy novels were extremely lucrative for Warner Bros., grossing a collective $7.7 billion at the box office. The majority of them were equally well-received critically and have remained a popular draw since they became available for viewing at home. Hoping to tap into that demand, NBCUniversal reached a deal with WB to air the movies on NBCU networks, beginning in 2016.
Leading up to streaming service’s launch, HBO Max Content Chief Kevin Reilly said getting the rights to the Harry Potter movies was “high on our priority list”. It was speculated the films would go to NBCU’s upcoming Peacock streaming service in the meantime. Instead, HBO Max users were surprised to find them already available on the service this morning, May 27.

David Zaslav, the head of the recently formed media giant Warner Bros. Discovery, is making a push to create more Harry Potter content, it seems. The Wall Street Journal reported that Zaslav is “looking to make fresh Harry Potter-related content” for HBO Max going forward.
Zaslav is reportedly planning to meet with series creator J.K. Rowling in the coming weeks to discuss the possibility of more Harry Potter content. No further details were revealed about what the potential new Harry Potter projects might be, if they do indeed come to fruition.
Zaslav was one of the key players in the combining of WarnerMedia and Discovery in April 2022 to create Warner Bros. Discovery, which he now heads up.
Before that deal, previous management also reportedly had an interested in creating more Harry Potter content for HBO Max. It was reported in January 2021 that HBO Max was looking to develop a live-action Harry Potter series, though whether or not it’s still happening is unclear.
The eight mainline Harry Potter films made more than $7 billion at the global box office, and the franchise remains a juggernaut, even with the latest Fantastic Beasts movie coming up short.

In January 2021, it was reported that a live-action Harry Potter TV series was in development.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, sources say “that executives at the WarnerMedia-backed streamer have engaged in multiple conversations with potential writers exploring various ideas that would bring the beloved property to television. Sources say broad ideas have been discussed as part of the early-stage exploratory meetings.”
This came as major news to fans of the franchise, as things have been kept in the pages and on the big screen up to this point. A TV show could legitimately take things in any direction and be set in any period, meaning that more aspects of the Wizarding World itself could be unlocked.
Numerous franchises have taken to the small screen to expand their respective universes, and the Wizarding World could be a perfect fit on HBO Max, which is looking to grow and compete with other streaming services.
As The Hollywood Reporter notes, “HBO Max launched last year and is the home all of the companyâs most valuable intellectual property. The platform is the streaming home of DC Comics films, with multiple TV spinoffs and originals already in the works.
