How Did Harry Potter Get His Scar

Don't Miss

So Whats The Deal With Harrys Scar

What Happened The Night Harry Got His Scar

Before we talk about Harrys scar, its important to understand the relationship between him and the original villain in his timeline, Lord Voldemort.

Warning! Spoilers ahead.

Voldemort was an all-powerful dark wizard that waged terror on the wizards of Great Britain. In time, he discovers a prophecy about a boy that will someday be born to defeat him. Voldemort then starts to look further into this prediction but discovers that he only has a fragment of the prophecy, not the entire thing.

To make matters even more complicated, when Voldemort looked further into the prophecy, he found out that there were actually two baby boys that it could be referring to: Neville Longbottom and Harry Potter. Voldemort went after the latter, not realising that once he tried to kill Harry Potter with Avada Kedavra he would be destroyed in the process.

Harry survived with nothing more than a lightning scar on his forehead, and Voldemort was seemingly vanquished

A Fragment Of Voldemort’s Soul Is Responsible For The Pain It Causes

Easily the biggest downside to Harrys otherwise awesome-looking scar is the splitting migraines it has caused the boy wizard over the years. This pain is chalked up to the unique connection shared between Harry and Voldemort, forged when the Dark Lord accidentally transformed his hated enemy into a soul fragment receptacle called a Horcrux.

Thanks to this unwittingly established bond, Harry is able to sense Voldemorts moods and even read his thoughts which, while something of a mixed blessing, has come in handy at times. The downside to this phenomena is that more often than not most notably, when the Dark Lord is in a deadly rage Harrys scar throbs with pain for the entire duration.

Interestingly, JK Rowling has revealed that theres more to these splitting headaches than just Voldemort is thinking mean thought.s. No, it turns out that the source of this intense discomfort is the piece of Voldemorts maimed soul that resides within Harry.

Given the intensity of the Dark Lords feelings, its no surprise that his soul shard is able to sense them via his connection to Harry.

Upon making contact albeit indirectly with Voldemort, the soul fragment immediately desires to be reunited with its owner, and forcefully tries to escape Harrys body via his scar!

Over 5000 Scar Templates Were Used During Filming

Any true Potterhead will tell you that Harry Potter’s scar is pretty freaking important, so it was absolutely crucial for the filmmakers to get the placement and the look of Harry’s scar juuuuuust right. So how did they do it? Special templates were strapped to Daniel Radcliffe and his stunt doubles’ heads and the scar was carefully applied approximately 5,800 times during filming! That’s a lot of work for one little detail, but the fandom wouldn’t have it any other way.

At Hogwarts, the Study of Ancient Runes, more specifically Runology, is an elective course taken by Hermione herself. In the Harry Potter Universe, ancient runes are an old form of writing once used by wizards and witches, similar to hieroglyphs. Although there are many magical things in Harry Potter that we wish were real, ancient runes actually DO exist in the real world. One particular rune symbol, the Sowilo, is shaped suspiciously like Harry’s famous scar. Interestingly enough, Sowilo means “sun” and represents victory and protection. Coincidence?

What Is Harry Potter

In the simplest terms, its a franchise. In more elaborate terms, its like a tidal wave of literary influence that has defined a generation or two, and has spawned everything from:

  • Movies
  • Memes
  • Plays
  • Spinoffs
  • Internet quizzes
  • And much more

No one ever knew that the story about a little boy with glasses and a scar would turn out to be so popular the books were initially rejected for publishing and didnt really take off until the release of the second book Chamber of Secrets. But from that point onwards, the books became an unstoppable literary phenomenon until the series ended.

But the franchise itself is far from over, and it looks like JK Rowling still has a lot to offer fans in terms of material. As of the moment, the franchise has steered away from the British story setting of Hogwarts and into the international wizarding world, courtesy of the film series Fantastic Beasts.

It’s Not A Lightning Bolt At All

Prince William Has A Harry Potter Scar On His Forehead And ...

Although Harry’s scar is described by many as a lightning bolt, its shape just so happens to also be the hand motion used to cast Avada Kedavra, or “The Killing Curse,” one of the strongest spells in the wizarding world. So what’s the connection?

Avada Kedavra was used by Voldemort to murder Harry, only the spell rebounded and Harry’s scar was the direct result of surviving the curse. So did the spell literally leave its mark upon Harry’s brow? Sure looks like it.

Lily’s Protection In Voldemort’s Blood Saved Harry

When Lord Voldemort rebuilt his physical body in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, he used Harry’s blood. That ingredient would go on to aid in the Dark Lord’s downfall. At first it seemed that the love protection was canceled out when Voldemort used Harry’s blood, since Voldemort was able to touch Harry without experiencing pain – but that wasn’t the case. The protection, first created by Lily, actually lived on through Voldemort when he received a new body. As Dumbledore explained, “His body keeps her sacrifice alive, and while that enchantment survives, so do you.”

When Voldemort hit Harry with the Killing Curse in the forest, it destroyed the Horcrux that resided in Harry, but left Harry himself alive. Since Voldemort was still alive, Lily’s love spell was still in effect. Harry was sent to limbo, where he encountered Dumbledore. He was given a choice to die and finally rest, or return home, and he chose the latter. Nagini remained as Voldemort’s last Horcrux until Neville destroyed her with the Gryffindor’s Sword. With no Horcruxes remaining as Voldemort’s primary defenses, this left the Dark Lord vulnerable.

It Was Supposed To Be The Last Word In The Series

JK Rowling had the overall narrative for all seven Harry Potter novels planned out far in advance of sitting down to actually write each individual book. Thats how she was able set-up so many plot threads early on in the series, only for them to pay off further down the line.

Sure, things changed along the way like how Rons father Arthur was set to lose his life in Order of the Phoenix, only to be spared by the author at the eleventh hour. But by and large, everything pretty much went down the way Rowling originally mapped it out.

As youd expect given the intricate plotting that characterizes the books, Rowling prepped many chapters in impressively granular detail to the point of even roughing out some of the prose. Famously, this included the epilogue of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, with the author long maintaining in the lead-up to its release that the final word would be scar.

Right up until the final revisions on Deathly Hallows, the last word in the series did indeed refer to Harrys iconic facial blemish.

Ultimately, Rowling decided to re-work the text to more clearly convey her intended meaning, and Deathly Hallows wraps up with the word well instead.

It Was Almost The Last Word In The Series

HOW HARRY POTTER REALLY GOT HIS SCAR !!

Before she ended the Harry Potter series with the words “all is well,” the final word of the Harry Potter series was almost “scar.” In an interview with Dateline, Rowling explained that for the longest time, the last line was something like ‘only those whom he loved could see the lightning scar.’ This would reference the final platform scene, when Harry was surrounded by his loved ones who were the only ones close enough to see it. This would have also made the scar’s fate somewhat ambiguous, leaving readers to wonder whether the scar was still there at all.

It has been made very popular due to its use in registering users for the closed beta of Pottermore.

How Did Voldemort Get His Wand Back

Cedrics murder and the ritual

Bone of the father, unknowingly given, you will renew your son. Flesh of the servant, willingly given, you will revive your master. Blood of the enemy, forcibly taken, you will resurrect your foe.
Peter Pettigrew conducting the ritual to restore Voldemort

Harry and Cedric were both transported to the graveyard of Little Hangleton. Voldemort ordered Pettigrew to kill the spare, and Cedric was struck with the Killing Curse. To his horror Harry saw a flash of green light then heard the sound of a body hitting the graveyards ground. He was then restrained to Tom Riddle Snrs grave marker so that Pettigrew could cut his arm open and take some of his blood to use in a Darkpotion to restore Voldemort to full power and strength. While taking Harrys blood Pettigrew refused to make eye-contact, possibly feeling some reluctance regarding his actions.

The rebirth in progress, Voldemort emerging from the cauldron

Pettigrew also took a bone from the grave of Tom Riddle Snr and his own hand as part of the potion. Voldemort regained a corporeal body and therefore was returned to full power. He ordered Pettigrew to stretch out his uninjured left arm, bearing the Dark Mark. Voldemort touched it and at once Death Eaters who were loyal or evaded capture came to him at once.

How Did Wormtail Get Voldemorts Wand

This isnt directly addressed in the books or the movies, but its still a very common question fans of Harry Potter have. After he attempts to kill Harry Potter, Voldemort is exiled and no one is sure where his wand was during that time.

The next time his wand makes a reappearance is in Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire when Wormtail returns the wand to Voldemort. Many fans have been left wondering if Wormtail had somehow hidden or stored the wand for the years of Voldemorts exile.

In a web chat in 2007, the book series author JK Rowling stated that Wormtail retrieved the wand from the wreckage in a desperate attempt to regain favor with Lord Voldemort. The way she phrases her answer to the question still leaves some fans debating if Wormtail retrieved the wand right after Voldemorts fall or not.

Wormtail, desperate to curry favour, salvaged it from the place it had fallen and carried it to him. I admit that would have been a bit of a feat for a rat, but they are highly intelligent creatures!

JK Rowling, JK Rowling And The Live Chat

It seems more commonly believed that Wormtail returned to the Potter house when he realized Voldemort had returned, instead of right after his defeat while trying to kill Harry. Because he lived as a rat for so many years most fans agree it was impossible that he wouldve been able to hide the wand without being detected.

Harry Potter And The Philosophers Stone

Harry Potter Fans Shocked After Learning Iconic Scar Isn

Growing up with the Dursleys, Harrys scar was The only thing Harry liked about his own appearance. But once he met Hagrid, Harrys relationship with his scar began to change. Not only did he find out that it was a mark made by Dark magic and by his parents murderer, but he also realised that it was a mark that made him recognisable. Time and time again through Philosophers Stone, it was Harrys scar that identified him as the Boy Who Lived, identified him as an orphan, or even a victim, of Lord Voldemort. Harrys scar also changed from dormant to active throughout the first book. Whilst he was growing up, it was merely part of his appearance, but soon after his arrival at Hogwarts it started to cause him physical pain. With his entry into the wizarding world, it was almost as though the scar came alive, and with its awakening came a searing pain in Harrys forehead that would follow him for many years to come.

Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix

This idea of his scar as a weakness was something that solidified in Order of the Phoenix. Whilst Harry had previously viewed his scar as something to be proud of, the scar was now not only causing him physical pain, but emotional trauma too. Throughout his fifth year at Hogwarts, the Ministry of Magic used it as a way to discredit and mock him. The Daily Prophet, following Rita Skeeters article about Harry collapsing all over the place, included lines such as, Lets hope he hasnt got a scar on his forehead or well be asked to worship him next. Whilst in previous years, pain in Harrys scar had been something unusual, in Order of the Phoenix, the prickling sensation in his forehead became commonplace, a constant reminder that Lord Voldemort had returned contrary to the lies the Ministry were disseminating. In short, Harrys relationship with his scar with the varying levels of pain that came with visions, dreams, Voldemorts emotions, and Ministry mockery took over his whole life. This was something that came out in anger when Hermione urges him to tell Dumbledore that its hurting: Yeah, said Harry, before he could stop himself, thats the only bit of me Dumbledore cares about, isnt it, my scar? He wasnt the boy with the scar anymore, the scar was defining him.

He Was The Most Powerful Dark Wizard In The World

Before Voldemort, the two greatest wizards in the Harry Potter universe were easily Albus Dumbledore and Gellert Grindelwald.

As a matter of fact, the greatest wizarding battle in history was reportedly one between the good Dumbledore and the dark Grindelwald.

When Voldemort rose to power, he soon surpassed even the power of Grindelwald who was spending the rest of his life in prison after his capture.

Voldemort has mastered countless Dark Arts spells and is strong enough when casting them to overpower even the most powerful wizards.

For example, hes even able to control Bartemius Crouch Senior for almost half a year.

He also cursed all of the Defense Against the Dark Arts teachers at Hogwarts after he was rejected the job, which involved a spell so powerful that not even Dumbledore could lift it.

It’s Not His Only Prominent Scar

A life filled with adventure is simultaneously a life beset with physical peril for evidence of this, consider Harry Potters mark-covered body. In addition to the scar on his forehead which hes carried with him since he was only one year old the boy wizard has several other prominent reminders of his many near-fatal scrapes.

Although none of these scars is as idiosyncratic as the lightning bolt that adorns Harrys melon, a couple come close. Take the disfigurement on the back of his right hand, which spells out I must not tell lies in handwritten script. This came from Dolores Umbridge more specifically, from her enchanted quill, which magically carved the detention lines he wrote on parchment into his flesh.

Theres also an oval-shaped burn on the Boy Who Liveds chest, left by Salazar Slytherins Locket. At the same time he was branded by the locket, Harry was bitten by the snake Nagini, too and this presumably left a scar behind, as well. Hermione Granger treated these injuries with a dittany-based potion, which kept the wounds clean and closed. Unfortunately, there are limits to dittanys healing properties, and the scars from both almost certainly never fully disappeared.

More recently, Pottermore reported that the adult Harry was seen with a cut over his right cheekbone, which is certain to leave a scar. The origins of this disfigurement remain a mystery, but its likely related to his work for the Department of Magical Law Enforcement.
