A Growing Affinity For Snakes

How Voldemort lose his nose.

Growing up in a world without magic was a defining experience for Voldemort. He wasn’t just surrounded by what he would go on to view as the mundanities of the muggle world, he was trapped at one of the lowest and most pitiable levels of it: an early 20th-century orphanage. He was alone, with no one to guide him but distant matrons and teachers whose intelligence did not match his own. Sure, he could probably tell he was uncommonly clever and good-looking from an early age, but given how fervently he proclaimed to Dumbledore that he knew all along that he was “special,” it is likely that his sense of self was bigger than even those formidable talents.

He was not, however, without any magical experiences during this time. As he told Dumbledore upon learning of his abilities, he had already been speaking to snakes for some time. In a life as lonely as his had been, this was probably a great comfort, in addition to being a confirmation of the greatness he so dearly wanted to embody. Snakes were friends, proof of his special talents, and could be coerced into doing his bidding. Years later, Voldemort would disfigure himself in a strikingly snake-life way, transforming his nose into flat, colorless slits and ridding himself of hair. He didn’t just want to inspire fear he wanted to honor the creatures he’d felt an affinity towards for decades.

Its probably something youve never considered before, but James and Lily Potter were actually only 19 years old when they married and 20 years old when they gave birth to Harry. In the Muggle world, the iconic house at 4 Privet Drive, Little Whinging, Surrey is actually located at 12 Picket Post Close, Bracknell, Berkshireabout 40 miles west of London.

In the J.K. Rowling books, Harry Potter spent his first 11 years in the cupboard under the stairs of the Dursleys homewith his cruel uncle Vernon, nosy aunt Petunia, and gluttonous cousin Dudley.

The residence sits in the same suburban county as Windsor Castle and Ascot Racecoursewhere Kate Middletons parents and U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May own homes.

Warner Brothers actually only filmed in the house for two weeks of Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stoneafter which the production company built a Privet Drive set.

A Handsome Father And An Unfortunate Mother

The man who would become Voldemort came from two vastly different lineages. His father was a patrician heir, born to the wealthy Riddle family of Little Hangleton. An only son, Tom Sr. was, according to his neighbors, quite the snob. He and his parents were accordingly disliked, but that didn’t seem to matter much in the grand scheme of things: they were blue-blooded landowners, and he was widely known as handsome. His tall, dark looks had already netted him a paramour, described only as a young woman named Cecilia, when Voldemort’s mother became besotted with him.

Merope Gaunt, in contrast to the man she had fallen for and the son she would go on to bear, was deeply unattractive. The result of generations of inbreeding, she was a neglected wretch with a lazy eye, a “plain, pale, rather heavy face,” and a cringing, defeated demeanor. Merope had likely lived her entire life under the thumb of her father and brother, slave to the former’s ideals of blood purity and target of the latter’s cruelties. It’s no wonder that she found herself attracted to the beautiful young man who rode past their cottage but the lengths to which she went to put him under her literal spell were shocking. After Tom Sr. emerged from the mind-controlling haze Merope had cast, she fled, gave birth to Tom Riddle Jr., and prayed that he’d look like his father before she passed away.

Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban

How Did Voldemort Lose His Nose

Voldemort does not appear in the third book, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, either in person or as a magical manifestation. He is, however, heard when Harry passes out from the harsh effects of a Dementor. Towards the end of the story, Sybill Trelawney, the Divination professor, makes a rare genuine prophecy: “The Dark Lord lies alone and friendless, abandoned by his followers. His servant has been chained these twelve years. Tonight, before midnight, the servant will break free and set out to rejoin his master. The Dark Lord will rise again with his servant’s aid, greater and more terrible than ever before. Tonight… before midnight… the servant… will set out… to rejoin… his master…” Though it is initially implied that the prophecy refers to Sirius Black, the book’s ostensible antagonist, the servant is eventually revealed to be Peter Pettigrew, who, for the 12 years since Voldemort’s fall, has been disguised as Ron’s pet rat, Scabbers.

Dark Magic Makes You Less Human

Voldemort’s outward appearance became more snake-like as he experimented more and more with Dark Magic and tearing his soul apart repeatedly. Every time he murders someone, he becomes less a human and more a monster*, if you will.

To quote Slytherincess’s answer on a related question:

There is a scene where Dumbledore shows Harry a memory of Voldemort after he resurfaced after being gone for ten years. He came to hide the Ravenclaw Horcrux and to ask Dumbledore, who was newly appointed headmaster, for the Defence Against the Dark Arts position, and his appearance is drastically changed … from when he had gone to work at Borgin and Burkes ten years prior. … Voldemort was deeply involved in Dark Magic

As to exactly how he changes, the books don’t specify it’s a general combinations of Dark Magic related deeds including murder, creating horcruxes, practicing Dark Magic, and doing other evil things. His physical transformation is a result of his spiraling descent into the unnatural horrors that Dark Magic brings.

Why Cant Voldemort Use Harrys Wand

St Mungos Hospital For Magical Maladies And Injuries

Voldemort lost his nose! Where did it go

St Mungos Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries is a hospital within the Harry Potter universe. Medics at the hospital are not called doctors, but are known as Healers and wear lime-green robes. Founded by famous wizard Healer Mungo Bonham, St Mungos is located in London. It was established to treat magical maladies, injuries or illnesses endemic to the Wizarding World. To enter the premises, one has to step through the window of what appears to be a derelict department store called Purge & Dowse Ltd. The exteriors of the hospital are red-bricked and dirty, which is the complete opposite of the interiors. Inside, everything is very neat and looks exactly as a hospital should. There are six floors. The emblem of St Mungos is a magic wand crossed with a bone. This is the hospital where Arthur Weasley is sent after he was attacked by Voldemorts snake, Nagini, in the Ministry of Magic and Minerva McGonagall is hospitalised from severe stunning when Hagrid is forced out of Hogwarts. During one visit, Harry and company happen across Neville Longbottom, who has come with his grandmother to visit his parents in the long-term care ward. They also find former professor Gilderoy Lockhart there, still suffering from the effects of a backfired Memory Charm.

What Is The Purpose Of A Horcrux

Why Voldemort Didn’t Have a Nose – Harry Potter Explained

According to J.K. Rowling, Horcrux is the object in which a Dark wizard has hidden a fragment of his soul for the purposes of attaining immortality. Horcrux is usually an object, but it can also be a living creature, having in mind that it is risky to do so.

The purpose of the Horcrux is to protect a soul from anything that can happen to the body. As long as Horcrux exists, the person whose soul is in her will be immortal, moreover indestructible.

No matter if the body is destroyed, the soul will remain intact and connected to the world of the living. Rarely will anyone choose such a way of life over death? It is known that such an act was performed only by two wizards, Herpo the Foul and Lord Voldemort.

Horcrux is known to have the ability to live independently without its creator. It has some kind of mind that thinks independently of its creator and can be strengthened by feeding on other peoples lives and negative emotions. Horcruxes that have been intact and hidden for years do not have such capabilities. Most Horcruxes, however, are well hidden to protect them from the risk of destruction.

The nature of Horcrux was considered extremely repulsive, so wizards were not taught about this spell and it was kept secret. Moreover, in the Hogwarts Scholl of Witchcrafts and Wizardly, it was a forbidden material. Only a few wizards knew what Horcrux was, and almost no one knew how to perform that spell.
