After you have figured out what you want your wand to look like, its time to bring out the hot glue gun.

This is probably the most tedious part of the craft, especially if you are trying to make little knots in the wand like I did for the Elder Wand. These knots are created out of the glue.

If you want to do this, it will take a lot of spinning the wand and several additions of glue. However, you can do pretty much anything you want with the design whether it be swirls, texture, or wand handles.

Step 3 DIY Harry Potter Wand Craft

After your glue has dried, and your wand is the desired shape, now you can paint it however you like!

Dont forget to decide what type of wood its made out of and what core it has!

What About The Wand

If you dont have an official interactive wand from the park , dont worry! You can easily make your own wand by gluing a sequin to the end of a stick. Any wand-like object will work fine it only needs a reflective tip that can be used to reflect infrared light. Just make sure the sequin is shiny and flat the faceted ones dont work well. You can also use a pearl sticker such as these.

We 3D-printed this wood-grained wand from Thingiverse and it turned out OK . The Make: Labs used these cool-looking ones from Etsy, intended as party favors. Or check out the Raspberry Potter website for a link to my new book with detailed instructions for making your own wand.

They arent exact replicas of the wands in the film, but rather, theyre inspired by the wands we saw on our tour of the Harry Potter Studios in London. The original designs are quite varied and I can imagine that our DIY Harry Potter wands would fit right in.

The real prop wands used in the making of the Harry Potter Movies

We did stray a little from some of the more austere designs by adding a few sparkly gems. After all, we needed to consider that these wands were to be used by a gaggle of nine year old girls, you cant blame us for adding a little bit of bling.

Of course wands in the real Wizarding World arent just made of wood, they have magical wand cores like Unicorn Hair, Dragon Heartstring or the most powerful of all, Phoenix feather. We are only amateur wand makers so I dont expect well produce a wand as powerful as the Elder Wand!

Even so, these DIY Harry Potter Wands are a fun project to make with your little witch or wizard.

Pop over and take a look at the photos from Emmas Harry Potter Party. We had a wand presentation at Ollivanders Wand Shop, and then the girls had a ton of fun running around and casting spells.

Connect The Pi To The Particle

Now that our Raspberry Pi is ready to go, well wire the Pi to the Photon. Figure J is a wiring diagram showing how to connect the two. Youll also notice the commented pin references in the Photon code we downloaded earlier. Basically, connect pins A0, A1, and A2 on the Photon to pins 15, 16, and 18 respectively on the Pi. Make sure that 3.3V and GND from the Pi are connected to the Photon as well otherwise it wont get power!

When were done, it should look something like Figure K. Figure L shows the Raspberry Pi successfully powering the Internet Button!

Making A Wand Out Of Paper

  • 1Start to roll a sheet of paper into a thin, tight stick. Start at the bottom left corner of the paper and roll it towards the upper right corner. Stop when you reach past the widest point of the paper.
  • 2Apply some liquid glue on the last third of the paper. To avoid making the paper too soggy, apply the glue in a thin layer with a brush. At this point, you can also add a core to your wand. Here are some options:
  • Phoenix feather: red, orange, or yellow feather.
  • Dragon heartstring: piece of red yarn.
  • Unicorn hair: silver or iridescent thread or tinsel.
  • 3Finish rolling the paper and hold it until the glue dries. This can take 20 to 30 minutes. If you do not wish to hold your wand for that long, you can secure it with some string or twist ties. The glue must be dry before you move on.
  • 4Trim the ends off. The tightly-rolled paper is probably very pointy at both ends. Use a pair of scissors or a craft knife to trim off both of the pointy ends. You will want to trim off one end more than the other. This will make the end wider, suitable for the base of your wand.
  • 5Apply some hot glue to both ends of the wand. This will seal the tube further, and prevent it from unraveling. For an extra touch, hot glue a small fancy bead or button to the bottom of your wand. Make sure that the bead or button is the same width as your wand it shouldn’t go past the edges.
  • If you’d like, you can hot glue fancy beads or buttons to the handle to make fancy designs.
