Theyre Difficult To Cast

Additionally, only wizards with a certain level of skill and power can cast Unforgivable Curses. As Snape tells Harry, casting Unforgivable Curses requires both nerve and ability.

âCrucââ yelled Harry for the second time, aiming for the figure ahead illuminated in the dancing firelight, but Snape blocked the spell again Harry could see him sneering.

âNo Unforgivable Curses from you, Potter!â he shouted over the rushing of the flames, Hagridâs yells and the wild yelping of the trapped Fang. âYou havenât got the nerve or the ability ââ Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Chapter 28

âNerveâ likely refers to the desire to use the Curse, something thatâs particularly important with the Cruciatus Curse. Crucio can cause varying degrees of pain, and the more you want to cause pain, the more effective itâll be. A Cruciatus Curse that doesnât have that desire behind it will be ineffective, so wouldnât help much in a battle.

Avada Kedavra has only two possible effects it either works or it doesnât, it canât kill someone any more dead if cast more skillfully than necessary, but it takes a certain level of skill and power to cast it effectively. If it fails, then it fails entirely.

For a wizard thatâs not skilled enough to use the Unforgivable Curses, itâd be more effective to cast a spell that theyâd be successful at using that attempting to use an Unforgivable Curse unsuccessfully.

Why Do Wizards Use Such Ineffective Spells During Serious Situations In Harry Potter

In Harry Potter, we can see many wizards in many really important situations/fights using very ineffective spells, and so later on they pay the price for that .

For example, in the Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Harry used Expelliarmus on Lucius Malfoy, even though he had two magic wands at the time , so he was able to keep fighting even though he could have been put out of the fight, using e.g. Stupefy. Then, after Sirius gets killed by Bellatrix, Harry goes after her and uses crucio one of the three Unforgivable Curses, same as the Avada Kedavra, and he could have gotten rid of one of the most important of Voldemorts servants.

Is it due to it being hard to cast such a powerful spell, and they are afraid they would fail the spell in such a serious situation, or dont they want to hurt somebody?

Why would one prefer Expelliarmus, while Stupefy is more powerful/effective in the most cases? There are also many other spells, which are very poorly used in the fights , but would put enemy out of fight more effectively than Expelliarmus.

As few people found this question duplicate, I would like to explain why did I ask another question about this topic. In this question author explicitly asked about why dont Death Eaters always use Avada Kedavra which is obvious to me. Im asking why wizards generally dont use more powerful spells during the fight, not necessarily the Avada Kedavra spell to kill enemy.

Are they actually very ineffective? Not necessarily.

The Very Useful Harry Potter Spells

24. Ferula

Even the most indoors-y of wizards will need to be bandaged up every now and then.

23. Lumos

Turning the tip of your wand into a light sounds sort of redundant in the age of smartphones, doesnt it? But then again, would wizards really need smartphones? Probably not. Which means Lumos is still a handy one to know.

22. Nox

If youre going to turn your wand into a light, you need the counter spell to extinguish it, too.

21. Impervius

A spell that waterproofs stuff! No, its not the most exciting thing in the world, but think of the practical uses! In the books this ones mainly used for Quidditch, but in rainy old England it would be pretty essential day-to-day, particularly for people who wear glasses like Harry.

20. Engorgio

Ah, the growing charm. Perfect if youre tending to a burgeoning vegetable patch, but definitely one to avoid using on animals.

19. Salvio Hexia

Hermione uses this spell which protects an area against hexes in order to safeguard the trios woodland camps in The Deathly Hallows. Its probably the magical equivalent of a good guard dog, which is handy if youre worried about getting ambushed.

18. Obliviate

A spell for erasing memories does sound a little on the evil side, but its also a crucial tool for wizards who need to stay hidden from pesky muggles.

17. Repello Muggletum

Speaking of pesky muggles, this one repels them! Absolutely crucial if youre trying to hide out in a magical forest camp or host a giant Quidditch tournament .

Stupefy is probably used most commonly in the fifth of the Harry Potter series, with both good and bad results. Harry and his many friends from Dumbledores Army learn the spell so they can be ready to fight Voldemort and his followers, because Professor Umbridge refuses to teach them any defensive spells or magic. Stupefy is used for the first serious time on the head of Gryffindor house, Professor McGonagall when she tries to save Rubeus Hagrid, Hogwarts Gamekeeper and teacher of Care for Magical Creatures from being taken away by Umbridge along with Draco Malfoy and the rest of the Inquisatorial Squad. The spell is also used in the Department of Mysteries several times by Harry and his friends Ron, Hermione, Luna, Ginny, and Neville on Voldemorts Death Eaters in the battle for the prophecy containing important information about Harry and Voldemort.
