Differences From The Book

Columbus repeatedly checked with Rowling to make sure he was getting minor details correct. Kloves described the film as being “really faithful” to the book. He added dialogue, of which Rowling approved. One of the lines originally included had to be removed after Rowling told him that it would directly contradict an event in the then-unreleased fifth Harry Potter novel Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

The book’s timeline is not enforced in the film. In the book, Harry’s eleventh birthday is in 1991. On the film set for 4 Privet Drive, Dudley’s certificates from primary school bear the year 2001.

Harry Potter And The Death Hallows

The lowest ranking film in the main Harry Potter timeline is its seventh and penultimate entry, taking up the first half of Rowling’s final novel in the series. Yates’ 2010 film largely takes place outside its usual setting at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry as its main characters hunt for scattered pieces of principal antagonist Voldemort’s soul hidden away in various objects while on the run from his evil followers.

Most of the criticism leveled against the first half of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows decried the film as being incomplete and unable to stand on its own merits without its second half, while praise singled out the performances of its cast and maturing tone. “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is fun escapist fantasy, with a dark, thoughtful thread running through its center,” wrote Annalee Newitz for io9. Joe Williams of the St. Louis Dispatch observed that the film was “slower and stranger than any of the previous films, simultaneously raising hopes for a haunting finale while dimming hopes for a magical one.” The film has a critics’ score of 78 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and a Metacritic score of 65.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 1 currently holds an audience score of 85 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

An A To Z Of Harry Potter

There are many audacious claims made within movie publicity that I hold little sway with I maintain whichever critic submitted the word Fantastic! to be splashed across the poster for Indiana Jones and the Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull should be forcibly barred from ever entering a cinema again. Yet its pretty hard to argue with the use of the sentence the motion picture event of a generation midway through the trailer for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

Like Star Wars and The Lord Of The Rings trilogy before it, theres a whole generation for who Harry Potter is fantasy cinema. Even Im excited to see the two concluding parts, and it took me a half-decade before I decided that I was a fan of the films. I live much of my life by the motto, if its good enough for Jarvis Cocker, its good enough for me . Come to mention it, speaking of Jarvis Cocker, heres that mans Wyrd Sisters to rock some wizard butt. ALRIGHT!

Yet such is the hum of excitement around the conclusion to the saga, chances are that there will be many for whom Deathly Hallows will be their first ever Harry Potter movie. If youre one of those people, I feel for you, I was one of you once youre probably wondering what a Muggle is, right? Thats why Ive pulled together this A to Z of Harry Potter for latecomers a sort of beginners guide to the world of Hogwarts and Quidditch and your guide to navigating a lexicon that contains many silly sounding words.

Every Harry Potter Movie Ranked

As with the Harry Potter books, opinions on which entries in the series are the best are incredibly varied and subjective. As a result, ranking the Harry Potter movies by their IMDb user scores reveals a remarkable consistency in fan response, with all eight instalments clustered between 7.4 and 8.1 out of 10.

The two Fantastic Beasts movies are noticeably the least loved releases spawned from JK Rowling’s Wizarding World, a fact perhaps reflected by the second movie’s near 20% drop at the box office compared to its predecessor .

The more successful of the two, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, made less money than all-but-one of the Potter movies . But, seeing as it had 12 years of inflation on its side, its debatable whether it actually outperformed the earlier film.
