Hbo Max Losing All Eight Harry Potter Movies In August

Expelliarmus redux!

HBO Max is, once again, saying goodbye to the octet of original Harry Potter fan-favorite movies.

More from Variety

As of Aug. 31, all eight Warner Bros. titles will be leaving the streamer: Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Parts 1 and 2.

In the U.S., fans of the Wizarding World can stream the eight Potter movies on NBCUniversals Peacock, which added them to the service as of July 1.

The Harry Potter film franchise has bounced between HBO Max and Peacock over the last two years illustrating the power of enduringly popular titles to attract and retain subscribers amid the ferocious competition among streaming services.

When HBO Max launched in May 2020, it featured the eight Potter flicks. But they were gone after a 90-day window, flying over to Peacock that fall. Then HBO Max snared the rights back as of September 2021 but that was evidently only for a 12-month term, and the Boy Who Lived has now returned to Peacocks nest.

What About The Fantastic Beasts Films

The rights for those are more simple. Warner Bros retained the streaming rights, meaning that Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Crimes of Grindelwald and Secrets of Dumbledore are all staying put on HBO Max.

HBO Max is also the home of all the other Harry Potter content. At the start of 2022, it released the Harry Potter 20th anniversary special, which brought back together much of the cast . The streamer also hosted the Harry Potter: Hogwarts Tournament of Houses game show hosted by Helen Mirren.

‘harry Potter’ Films Leaving Hbo Max In August

Bad news for Potterheads: all eight Harry Potter movies will be removed from HBO Max on August 31. However, the good news is that the films can be found on another well-known streaming platform. Peacock added all Harry Potter films to its library on July 1, a shock to no one. The Harry Potter franchise has been used as a popular series attraction for both streaming services for a while now, with the movies disappearing from one platform only to show up on the other.

With all that being said, Potterheads can expect Fantastic Beats and Where to Find Them, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, and Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore to remain on HBO Max. Also, the platform still offers viewers the chance to watch the reunion of the Harry Potter cast and director Chris Columbus as they discuss the making of the films in Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts.

For those unfamiliar or curious about the film series, Harry Potter is based on author J.K. Rowlings childrens fantasy book series by the same name. It follows the story of protagonist Harry Potter and his two best friends, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, as they navigate the mysteries and turmoil of the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry as Harry prepares for the final showdown with Lord Voldemort, a dark wizard who plans to become immortal and ultimately dominate the wizarding and muggle, non-wizarding, worlds.

Harry Potter Is Leaving Hbo Max Here’s Where You Can Watch

The Harry Potter franchise has activated a portkey and is set to leave one of its current streaming services.

The eight films are currently streaming on HBO Max, but that is set to change thanks to a previous contract agreement made before Warner Bros launched its streaming service.

This isn’t the first time the Harry Potter movies have left a streaming service. In fact, they have moved every few months since HBO Max’s launch in 2020. That’s in contrast to other films in the so-called “Wizarding World” franchise, which stays in one place while its older sister keeps moving around.

When HBO Max launched in May 2020, it included the octet of Harry Potter movies but that was only a three-month carve-out on streaming rights the studio had sold to NBCU. In October 2020, Peacock began streaming the Harry Potter movies now WarnerMedia has again reclaimed the rights to the magical film series for HBO Max.

Such popular library fare has proven to be a reliable way to attract and retain subscribers amid the fiercely competitive streaming wars. The eight Harry Potter films, released between 2001 and 2011, rank as the third highest-grossing movie franchise with a worldwide haul of $7.7 billion .

How To Watch All Eight Harry Potter Movies Once They Leave Hbo Max Next Month

The competition among steamers to hold onto enduringly popular titles continues. For now, Peacock is winning the struggle to retain the Harry Potter franchise to the dismay of HBO Max, who will lose all eight films next month. .

As of Aug. 31, all eight Warner Bros. titles will be leaving HBO Max: Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Parts 1 and 2.

    More from Variety

HBO Max will still have some magic come August, though. The streamer will still continue to host the three Fantastic Beasts movies Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald and Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore. Also available to stream is the Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts special, which sees an emotional reunion of stars Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson with director Chris Columbus.

In order to stream the prequel series and reunion special, youll have to subscribe to HBO Max, with plans starting at $9.99/month. On the streamer youll find a slew of Emmy-nominated series such as Euphoria, Succession, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Hacks and White Lotus.

Why Do The Harry Potter Films Keep Moving

The main reason seems to be because of deals made before either HBO Max or Universal had streaming services.

In 2016, the TV rights for the films were set to expire after being held by ABC for many years. At that time, the rights were divided, with NBCUniversal getting cable rights to show the films on SyFy and USA, while HBO bought the streaming rights to have the films on its HBO Go / HBO Now platforms.

Crucially, though, the NBC deal also allowed the films to appear on the SyFy and USA digital platforms. This essentially means that each service has a claim to the digital rights to the films, explaining why they keep moving around.

This is something that looks likely to continue. The NBC deal doesn’t expire until 2025, meaning that things are not likely to change for a few years.

The eight Harry Potter movies are leaving HBO Max in the latest installment of the streamer’s tennis match with Peacock over the rights to stream the films. As of Aug. 31, fans of the franchise will need to visit rival service Peacock, which got the films at the start of July, to stream them.

HBO Max subscribers won’t be completely bereft of Potter-related content. All three movies in the Fantastic Beasts saga will still stream there. HBO Max is also the streaming home of the 20th anniversary Harry Potter special.

WarnerMedia’s Warner Bros. signed a licensing deal with NBC Universal years ago, though WarnerMedia’s HBO Max has pulled back the rights several times over the last few years, as each platform seeks the boost a popular franchise can give.

Until any future license swap, you’ll need two platforms to stream the movies in order of CNET’s definitive rankings.
