Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald

“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2” Trailer 2

The final movie so far in the Harry Potter world hit theaters in 2018. This was the second movie in the Fantastic Beasts series. While Newt Scamander was still the main protagonist, there was a lot here to set up a battle mentioned in the original Harry Potter movies between Albus Dumbledore and his greatest rival, Gellert Grindelwald.

The Death Of Harry Potter

The scene where Harry Potter actually dies happened in the seventh book, Deathly Hallows, during the Battle of Hogwarts. After a lot of fighting and several losses, Harry decided to accept Voldemorts previous offer to give himself up to save the lives of his friends and colleagues. He went on to the Forbidden Forest, where Voldemort was waiting for him with his Death Eaters.

As they faced each other, Harry Potter gave himself up without a fight, an act Voldemort punished by casting the Killing Curse at Harry.

Harry Potter fell to the ground and awoke in a place called the Limbo. There, he met his old mentor, Albus Dumbledore, who apologized for his behavior and explained his actions. Dumbledores spirit further explained to Harry that he wasnt actually dead, but could choose to stay there or return to the real world.

Dumbledore explained that due to the fact that Voldemort used Harrys blood to resurrect , the two were intrinsically bound, which protected Harry from being killed by Voldemort.

Also, after the incident in Godrics Hollow, Harry unwillingly and unknowingly became a Horcrux, since he had a part of Voldemorts soul inside him Harry met that crippled piece in the Limbo.

After torturing Harrys corpse with the Cruciatus Curse, Voldemort ordered Rubeus Hagrid to bring the corpse back to Hogwarts and claim his ultimate victory.

/10 Voldemort’s Rise Is An Important Political Message

Harry Potter is centered around the conflict between Voldemort and Harry as the Dark Lord emerges once again. The films appeal to a more mature audience with their political allegories, primarily explored through Voldemort’s rise to power.

The Harry Potter franchise poses important questions about how such dark figures are able to attain massive followings and, as a direct result, massive power. The various authority figures in the Wizarding World, and specifically how these figures fail, are incredibly impactful in sending social and political messages to viewers.

How To Watch The Harry Potter Movies In Release Order

Harry Potter Cast

There are no complicated interweaving timelines to deal with if you watch the Potter movies in release date order. Its two distinct series, with an incomplete set of prequels following on from the parent franchise.

That means theres no need to introduce any kind of Star Wars-style ‘Machete Order’ just yet. But, if we get some massive revelation in Fantastic Beasts 3, 4 and 5, that may change.

Its also interesting to note that there are more Harry Potter movies than there are books, with final novel The Deathly Hallows split into two parts because there was so much story to fit in.

  • Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone
  • Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
  • Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

The Decision To Split Deathly Hallows Helps The Story

The first printing of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is about 607 pages, a large book as the result of being the last entry in the franchise there are many storylines that needed to be wrapped up. The filmmaker’s decision to split the book into two movies helps both, as nothing feels compressed while also allowing each its own unique feel, with Part 1 breaking from the franchise convention and going for a fugitive-type story and Part 2 primarily being a war movie.

The decision to split the books also comes organically, as it allows Deathly Hallows Pt. 1 to primarily focuses on the horocrux and the characters are given the new information about the Deathly Hallows towards the end, making for a shift in the narrative quest. Dobby’s death makes for the perfect endpoint for Part 1 as it puts the heroes at their lowest point, giving the story its Empire Strikes Back moment. This allows Deathly Hallows Pt. 2 to be one giant war film at Hogwarts.

/10 Harry Grapples With Classic Teenage Angst

Harry’s adolescent angst is most apparent in the franchise’s fifth entry, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. The Boy Who Lived struggles with his identity as the Chosen One, facing imminent danger from every direction. The authority figures in his life, especially Dumbledore, still treat him like a child, often attempting to hide things from him.

Though Harry’s angst is tied to the story’s fantasy elements, his difficulties are deeply relatable for fans going through their adolescence. The back and forth of being told that it’s time to grow up while simultaneously being treated like a child is a pervasive conflict for many teenagers.

/10 Harry Potter And The Half

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince may not have been the most faithful adaptation of the book, but it remains one of the middle-earning movies in the series and was an important part of the overall story. Featuring the death of a very important character, The Half-Blood Prince feels like a penultimate pitstop before the final phase of the story.

Production Budget: $250,000,000

Domestic Box Office Earnings: $302,089,278

Worldwide Box Office Earnings: $929,411,069

This movie features new creatures and spells and even finds time to feature a Quidditch match amidst all of the Harry and Dumbledore stuff. It feels like Harry is truly trusted enough to be taking on Voldemort and delving into the truth behind his parent’s death in this movie as well as the worst things Dumbledore has done.

Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 1 & Part 2

Finally, the last book had been so big that it was actually split into two movies.

This is Harrys seventh and final year of what was supposed to be a full study at Hogwarts.

With so many enemies abound, this turns out not to be the case.

These two movies contain some of the biggest adventures in the series as they take place in various locations.

Our sensational wizard in both of these movies is seventeen going on eighteen.

Keep in mind, as with all the movies, that his birthday is shortly after the beginning of the movie.

So, in the case of the first movie, hes briefly sixteen years old, and in the second hes seventeen throughout the whole picture.

/10 The Stakes Grow Higher & Higher

As the Harry Potter franchise develops, the plot of each film becomes tied to a larger story that spans several movies. In the first three movies, the plot is largely wrapped up by the end, and Harry peacefully returns for a summer at Privet Drive while he awaits a return to Hogwarts.

From Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire onward, the ends of each film grow more ominous. A major character is killed towards the end of each of the later films. The stakes simply get higher with every movie, rather than providing a clear conclusion.

Would The Harry Potter Cast Return

While recasting the beloved original cast of the Harry Potter franchise would prove a challenging endeavor, the studio might have to for story continuity. The characters are considerably older in the play Harry, Ron, and Hermione are in their late 30s when the play takes place. The original three actors of Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint are all in their early 30s, still a bit too young to convincingly be just a stone’s throw away from 40. However, should the studio decide to adapt Harry Potter and the Cursed Child sometime in the future, they need only wait a few years for their original trio to fit the roles.

Another thing to consider is how Harry Potter and the Cursed Child was originally cast, which had caused inevitable controversy back in 2016: Hermione Grangers role was cast with a Black actress, which Rowling defended by saying that Hermiones skin color had never been described in detail in the novels. Perhaps Rowling was asserting that anyone could play Hermione so long as she embodied the essence of the character, but if the studio decides to recast the main trio, they should lean into fully recasting every role.

/10 Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban

The third movie in the series and the only one not to feature Voldemort, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is the lowest-earning movie out of the series. This movie introduced important characters such as Sirius Black and Remus Lupin as well as played with elements such as time travel and showing needlessly dangerous parts of Hogwarts.

Production Budget: $130,000,000

Domestic Box Office Earnings: $249,757,726

Worldwide Box Office Earnings: $789,592,708

Despite being the lowest-earning Harry Potter movie, The Prisoner of Azkaban remains a great viewing experience that feels a lot lighter-hearted than the others.

Chris Columbus Wants To Make A Cursed Child Movie

Chris Columbus first mentioned his interest in making a Harry Potter and the Cursed Child movie during an interview with Variety. The interview itself was for a special 20th-anniversary celebration of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. Columbus stated “I would love to direct The Cursed Child. Its a great play and the kids are actually the right age to play those roles. Its a small fantasy of mine. While it’s true that the Harry Potter trio may be the right-ish age to play their adult counterparts, the entirety of this Chris Columbus fantasy hinges on whether or not the cast wants to return. A Cursed Child movie simply wouldn’t be the same without the original cast, and it’s doubtful Warner Bros. would agree to a film without them. All of that being said, the idea of making the HP sequel is a decent one. The Fantastic Beasts prequel has gotten a lot of flack, therefore it might be a better idea to fast-forward in the timeline, rather than go back. There were many fans of the Harry Potter franchise that didn’t get to see the play for themselves. The Cursed Child could be looking at sky-high presales.

Who Do You Think Was The Biggest Miscast In The Movie

Hermione. Sometimes its hard to predict how child actors will grow up, but Emma Watson was overacting in the first movie already, they should have seen where that was going.

She’s literally cringe in gof

Mrs. Figg. Nothing against Kathryn Hunter but she’s not Mrs. Figg.

In Fantastic Beasts it was Johnny Depp. The adults in HP were mostly aged up but pretty solid performances. Young newcomers in main roles can always go either way, Emma Watson wasn’t that great in acting imo.

I also think that Jude Law is to handsome for Dumbledore. The sober elegance is also weird, but that is fault of the production/direction.

Whom would you pick instead of her?

Sirius. Gary Oldman did a fine performance, but appearance-wise I don’t see the striking looks that I imagined from the books. Not even when he cleaned up and dressed nice in OOTP. I feel like Gary Oldman has a more of a “guy next door”-ish nice looks, but not dashing/handsome. Like, if they had casted him as a role that required a more “normal guy” look, like Lupin, it would’ve made more sense.
