Harry Potter Cast Members You May Not Know Passed Away

Every Death in Harry Potter: A Tribute to 104 Fallen Characters (HP Explained)

After the original series of Harry Potter novels started topping bestsellers’ lists in the late 1990s, a film franchise was pretty much an inevitability. The first movie, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone , was released in 2001, leading to a decade-long Potter marathon at theaters and box offices across the globe.

With child stars Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint leading the films as Harry himself and his two best friends Ron and Hermione, the younger actors in the Potter franchise were supported by some of England’s finest actors, including Dame Maggie Smith, Michael Gambon, Jim Broadbent, Emma Thompson, and more. However, during and since the ten-year run of the Harry Potter film franchise, some members of the cast unfortunately passed away and no matter whether these actors left fans behind during the franchise or after it had concluded, these losses still left Potter fans devastated. From Potions masters to Ministry officials to magical creatures, here’s a list of Harry Potter cast members you may not know passed away. Spoilers for theHarry Potterseries to follow!

Sirius Blacks Tragic Death Leaves Harry Utterly Shattered

If there’s one character in the series more tragic than Severus Snape, it’s Sirius Black. Raised in the abusive Black family, he finds refuge with the Potters, only to lose his friends and his freedom after Peter Pettigrews betrayal. He spends practically one-third of his life in Azkaban, and even when he finally escapes, his innocence is never proven. Even if Harry cares about his dead parents, Sirius is clearly the closest thing he has to a parental figure.

Sirius is killed by Bellatrix Lestrange in the battle at the Department of Mysteries, at the end of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Its notable that the movie deliberately mutes Daniel Radcliffes cry of grief, as it was considered too heart-wrenching to even include. Additionally, Bellatrix casts Avada Kedavra in the movies, whereas the spell she uses in the books is unclear and simply propels Sirius into the Veil.

Between Fantastic Beasts And Harry Potter

  • Evan Rosier – Killed by Alastor Moody.
  • Regulus Black – Killed by the army of Inferi for trying to destroy the Slytherin’s locket, one of Voldemorts Horcrux.
  • James Potter – Killed by Voldemort with Avada Kedavra while defending Harry.
  • Lily J. Potter – Killed by Voldemort with Avada Kedavra while defending Harry.

One such painting is of the “fat lady,” and the original actress to fulfill the role was legendary stage actress Elizabeth Spriggs.

As noted by The Guardian, Spriggs made a career out of performances in iconic works like Work is a 4-Letter Word and Sense and Sensibility. She had been a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company, had starred in London’s West End theater scene, and continued working later in her career in both film and television. The Series Of Events In Godrics Hollow

It was Professor Sibyl Trelawney who recited the prophecy that Harry Potter was meant to obliterate the terror of Lord Voldemort. One year after this prophecy was made, the threatened Voldemort, who also led the crew of Death Eaters, went to Godrics Hollow to kill the infant Potter.

Despite James and Lilys best efforts to guard their son against his evil objective, Voldemort soon reached Harry and approached to kill him. However, his Killing Curse backfired and instead, he ended up killing himself during the incident, while leaving his victim with his legendary thunder-like scar.

It was not revealed until later that Lord Voldemort never really died. He simply disappeared, while Harry started living with his maternal Muggle relatives until he received an admission letter to enter Hogwarts.

Spoiler alert, obviously

Warner Bros.

With the “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” film celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, and since we’ve reached that point in the holiday season where marathons of the franchise run constantly on TV , what better way to think back on the franchise’s impact as a whole than revisit the most devastating characters of the series? Ok yes, that’s kind of not exactly the Christmas spirit, but we’ve done it anyway. Read on.

9. Harry’s Parents – Lily and James Potter

While we would not really have a story without Lily and James murder by Lord Voldemort, their absence from the series also makes things so hard on Harry. Their loss is almost a character in and of itself.

8. Hedwig

One of Harrys first friends upon learning that he was a wizard, Hedwig was a Very Good Owl indeed. Hedwigs protection of Harry during the Orders moving of him in the beginning of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1” hurts. Her death, being the first in the film, sets the tone for all of the others that follow.

7. Cedric Diggory

Cedrics murder deserves recognition because it was so nonchalant. it not only shocks the hell out of Harry , it firmly establishes, in case there was any doubt, that Voldemort does not value human life in the slightest.

6. Severus Snape

5. Dumbledore

4. Remus Lupin and Nymphadora Tonks

3. Fred Weasley

2. Sirius Black

1. Dobby the House Elf

Harry Potter Deaths: Ranked

Murder, curses and surgery complications

We all think of J.K. Rowling as the benevolent ruler of our hearts and kind-hearted steward of our childhoods, but in fact, she is really a MASS MURDERER. According to Wikipedia, over 158 characters died over the course of the Harry Potter books, and while that number includes deaths as insignificant as the spider Mad Eye Moody Avada Kedavrad , that still leaves us with a pretty significant body count. To help sort through the carnage, please refer to the following list, ranking HP deaths from the ones we forgot about to the ones that will haunt us forever.

33. Nearly Headless Nick: If anything, derived his entire sense of self from beheading. The one death to actually give laughs, rather than tears.

32. Bellatrix Lestrange: Just thinking about it makes me want to stand up and repeat Molly Weasleys immortal words.

31. Quirinus Quirrell: Hands up if the first time you read Philosophers Stone, you didnt even realize he had died.

30. Nicholas and Perenelle Flamel: They were cool with it.

29. Hagrids Flobberworms: Fed too much, loved too little.

28. Moaning Myrtle: Sure, she was cut down before her time, but she was also kind of the worst.

27. The Gaunt Family: Okay, Merope was kind of sad, but Marvolo and Morfin werent exactly contributing to the net good of the universe.

26. Binky the Rabbit: I mean, the real casualty here was Hermiones friendship with Lavender and Parvati. The girls dormitory must have been a real tough place for her, post-Binky.

Alan Rickman The Famed Actor Who Brought Harry Potter’s Snape To The Screen Died In 2016

Of all the characters who made a lasting impact on the Harry Potter series, Severus Snape, the man who gave his life to protect Harry Potter, is the pinnacle. Distinct in his dress, his dialect both drawn out and sharp as a sword, he is, without question, a staple character in the series, who was brought to life on screen by actor Alan Rickman, who sadly died from cancer in 2016, as noted by BBC News.

Costars and collaborators, including series writer J.K. Rowling, reflected on Rickman after his death. “There are no words to express how shocked and devastated I am to hear of Alan Rickman’s death,” she tweeted. “He was a magnificent actor & a wonderful man.” Fellow stars of Harry Potter, including Daniel Radcliffe, shared their memories of the late actor. “As an actor he was one of the first of the adults … to treat me like a peer rather than a child,” he wrote, as noted by Elite Daily. “I will carry the lessons he taught me for the rest of my life and career.”

Deaths In Dumbledore’s Army And Their Allies During The Battle Of Hogwarts

Severus Snape: Voldemort met with Snape in the Shrieking Shack on the night of the Battle of Hogwarts. The Dark Lord thought Snape was the master of the Elder Wand so he used Nagini to kill him. Voldemort lifted Nagini’s cage over Snape so the snake could inject him with a venomous bite. As Snape was dying, he released a series of memories to Harry who later learned of Snape’s true allegiance. The death also set off Harry’s journey in destroying Voldemort once and for all.

Remus Lupin: Remus was one of the various members of the Order of the Phoenix to answer Neville’s call for assistance in the upcoming battle. He helped lead the Hogwarts’ forces against the Death Eaters on school grounds. Remus dueled Death Eater Antonin Dolohov and was killed during the early stages of the battle.

Nymphadora Tonks: The wife of Remus Lupin intended to stay out of the Battle of Hogwarts to instead care for their infant son. Tonks couldn’t stand by and let him fight alone so she arrived just in time to help defend against the Death Eaters. As she worried about the fate of Remus, she ended up being killed by her aunt, Bellatrix Lestrange.

Colin Creevey: Colin was forced to leave Hogwarts after Snape and the Death Eaters took over as Muggle-borns were not allowed to attend. The young wizard returned to assist Dumbledore’s Army but was sent away by McGonagall for being too young. Colin must have ignored her warning since his body was found by Neville outside of the Great Hall.
