Why is Harry Potter SO popular? | Harry Potter

One of the prominent reasons the series is considered so good is the author J.K. Rowling. She managed to create a magical world with such special characters that people all around the world fell in love with them. The personality of the characters was built in such a way that people kept rooting for them throughout the story. Another aspect is how she wrote the book new information was revealed throughout the series, which kept the fans invested in the characters and the storyline.

The popularity of Harry Potter rose once Warner Bros picked up the rights of the franchise and transferred the story into the big screen. The scriptwriting was also very exceptional as it captured the essence of each character and cast hand-picked by the author, which made a perfect match with the book characters.

Apart from the child actors, the movie franchise had some of the industrys most revered and talented actors. They allowed the child actors to create their own persona and groomed their talent to produce a beautiful final project.

The Wizarding World Of Harry Potter Theme Park At Universal Studios Has Drawn In Millions Of Visitors

The theme park opened in June 2010 and six months of Harry Potter was already enough to lift Universal Orlando’s full-year attendance by 20 percent, reports the Orlando Sentinel. Universal said it drew 11.2 million visitors in 2010, an increase of nearly 2 million from 2009, as huge crowds descended on the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, in the resort’s Islands of Adventure theme park.

Tourists plunking down cash for food, magic wands, and other Potter-themed souvenirs also helped push the annual revenue up 41 percent to $1.1 billion.

Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban

In the third book, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Rowling uses a time travel premise. Harry learns that his parents were betrayed to Voldemort by their friend Peter Pettigrew, who framed Harry’s godfather Sirius Black for the crimes, condemning him to Azkaban, the wizard prison. When Sirius escapes to find Harry, Harry and Hermione use a Time Turner to save him and a hippogriff named Buckbeak. When Pettigrew escapes, an innocent Sirius becomes a hunted fugitive once again. Harry learns how to create a Patronus, which takes the form of a stag, the same as his late father’s.

Stories of not only romantic love, but sacrificial love, parental love, compassionate love, discreet love, unconditional love, and unrequited love. A husband dying for a wife, a loyal servant dying for their master, and even a twin brother dying for the other are all intertwined in this intricate story.

Why Was Harry Potter So Special

Why are the Harry Potter books so popular?

Harry also had the unusual ability to speak and understand Parseltongue, a language associated with Dark Magic. This, it transpires, is because he harbours a piece of Voldemorts soul. He loses this ability after the part of Voldemorts soul inside him is destroyed at the end of The Deathly Hallows.

Transitioning To The Silver Screen

From the seven original books that J. K. Rowling wrote, eight movies have been based on the evolving series.

Those who make a day or week out of watching all of the Harry Potter movies will be more likely to notice the change between movies as changes occur in the characters.

The Harry Potter series takes place during the middle school and high school years of three students, which is a rapidly evolving time for any person.

As Harry Potter aged, so did the nature of his movies.

Most people point to the change in directors for the change in mature tones that can be seen throughout the later installments of the series.

Across the eight movies, there have been four different directors.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets were both directed by Chris Columbus, who is best known for directing Mrs. Doubtfire and Home Alone.

It was Columbus who was able to give the movies their sense of whimsical magic that was fun for the whole family to watch.

The second director to take on the Harry Potter film series was Alfonso Cuarón, starting with Harry Potter and Prisoner of Azkaban.

With Cuaróns unique visual style, he was able to enforce the transition from childhood innocence to that first realization that things arent as they seem.

This was the most controversial movie among fans due to the changes that Cuarón had made to the relationship between Harry Potter, Sirius Black, and Remus Lupin.

It was also Cuaróns only Harry Potter movie.

Some Fans Who Were Raised On ‘harry Potter’ Faced An Existential Reckoning And The Path Forward Isn’t Clear

Suddenly, fans were reckoning with the literary equivalent of having a racist uncle: What do you do when someone or something problematic is unwittingly and inextricably entwined with your world?

It’s difficult to truly separate art from the artist when the artist’s views color her world in so many fundamental ways.

Some fans treasure their existing copies of the beloved series while refusing to purchase anything new to support Rowling financially. For others, the books lie obscured and discarded, awaiting a fate yet to be determined.

As the original generation of fans has children, some may choose to omit the books entirely, opting for more inclusive family reading. Others may still introduce the series but ensure that it’s accompanied by disclaimers and caveats.

This intrusion of real life means the series can’t be a safe haven for the next generation. When we introduce the real world to the Wizarding World, we inherently drain some of its magic.

Harry Potters Popularity Completely Changed The Publishing Industry And The Effect Spilled Over To Hollywood

Here are just two of the ways Harry Potter changed publishing, and how those changes affected the rest of pop culture:

1) The books made it possible to publish long works aimed at children. Prior to Harry Potter, the accepted wisdom was that kids didnt have the attention span to read long books. And anyway, the thinking went, kids werent buying their own books. Their parents were paying for everything, and they would never be willing to pay an extra dollar or two for a longer book, with its extra printing and binding.

But after Harry Potter became an unstoppable cultural force, and it was clear that fans would keep buying thebooks no matter what, it started to expand. The last four volumes of the series are all doorstoppers that clock in at well over 700 pages each.

Publishers and childrens writers took notice. Booklist found that middle-grade novels expanded 115.5 percent between 2006 and 2016, the decade in which the Potter novels were at their longest.

The Outsiders reinvented young adult fiction. Harry Potter made it inescapable.

2) Harry Potter made childrens literature an unstoppable force. Before Harry Potter, childrens literature was often considered an afterthought. Sales were falling. Children, analysts would say wistfully, just werent reading anymore.

Harry Potter As A Brand Name

How Harry Potter Became A Pop Culture Phenomenon

Time Warner Inc.`s Warner Bros. has not only acquired the film rights of Harry Potter, even the merchandising rights which make the world wide marketing possible.34 Some parts of these rights were sold for a limited time. So the danish toy manufactures Lego are allowed to produce toys. The deal includes development of two films based on the first two books Harry Potter and the Philosopher`s Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets . 35

Time Warner also signed a deal with Hasbro to market Harry Potter trading cards, games, role playing games, candies and electronics.

Mattel, home of Barbie and Hot Wheels, signed a similar licensing deal to sell other Harry Potter items, such as figures and board games.36

Time Warner expects sales from over 100 million US-Dollar. The lawful foundation of this merchandising success is not only the owning of the licensing rights of Harry Potter. Time Warner has also many words from the Harry Potter books protected by law. For example: Hogwarts, Hedwig, Nimbus 2000, Quidditch, Hagrid, Gryffindor or Dumbledore. 37 Other firms are forbidden to use these words. Only Time Warner has the licence to use them for brand names. But the protection of these words is doubtful.38

Harry Potter And The Philosopher’s Stone

Harry first appears in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. Starting in 1981, when Harry was just one year old, his parents, James and Lily, were murdered by the most powerful Dark Wizard, Lord Voldemort . He attempted to kill Harry too, but was unsuccessful and only left a lightning bolt shaped scar on Harry’s forehead. Voldemort’s body was destroyed, but his soul was not. Harry later learns that the reason why he survived was that his mother sacrificed herself for him, and her love was something that Voldemort could not destroy.

According to Rowling, fleshing out this back story was a matter of reverse planning: “The basic idea Harry … didn’t know he was a wizard … and so then I kind of worked backwards from that position to find out how that could be, that he wouldn’t know what he was… That’s… When he was one year old, the most evil wizard for hundreds and hundreds of years attempted to kill him. He killed Harry’s parents, and then he tried to kill Harryhe tried to curse him…. Harry has to find out, before we find out. And for some mysterious reason, the curse didn’t work on Harry. So he’s left with this lightning-bolt shaped scar on his forehead, and the curse rebounded upon the evil wizard who has been in hiding ever since”.

He Didnt Fully Understand What A Wizarding War Even Meant

All throughout Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Harry struggles with Umbridge in an attempt to get her, or anyone at the Ministry for that matter, to acknowledge the fact that Voldemort is back. This is a very noble thing that he does, but the moment everyone accepts that he isnt lying, Harry seems to immediately forget that a wizarding war will affect more than just Harry Potter. Suddenly everything becomes a grudge match between him and Voldemort, even though Harry is not the first person who lost their loved ones to Lord Voldemort. His life was not the only life that was ruined by He Who Shall Not Be Named, but for the entire series, Harry does not seem to understand that a war is just that a war. Harry may have been the Chosen One, but he was only one cog in a vast machine.

The Stories About A Boy Wizard And His Friends Spurred Young People’s Interest In Reading

Besides breaking publishing and movie ticket records, Harry Potter’s greatest achievement, say parents and teachers, has been to persuade young people to pick up a book and read it, even if the effects were limited.

No comprehensive studies of the effect of the Harry Potter books in the United States have been done, however the U.K.-based Federation of Children’s Book Groups released figures showing that 59 percent of U.K. kids think the books have improved their reading skills and 48 percent say the books are why they read more, reports USA Today.

Are Harry Potter Books Appropriate For Kids

Like most milestones, there is no right age. It all depends on the kidand the parents. But there are a few age-related guidelines to take into consideration: From a technical standpoint, Harry Potter is categorized as a middle-grade read, which typically encompasses 9to12-year-olds.

Why Harry Potter is very popular?

One of the main reasons why the franchise is so good is J. K. Rowling herself. She managed to write a book that was set in a magical world the readers all around the world fell in love with. She also managed to create characters with enough personality that people could root for throughout the story.

Children’s Books Are Big Business

These practical effects on the world of publishing reflect one of the most significant legacies the Harry Potter books have left money.

Dr Smith says the Harry Potter series changed people’s ideas about the monetary possibilities of children’s books.

“It radically changed the importance with which children’s books were viewed,” she says.

“People began to realise children’s publishing was actually a very serious business, that you could make more money from children’s publishing than publishing for adults.”

That includes expansion beyond the selling power of the books themselves the Harry Potter movie adaptions have found phenomenal success, becoming the second highest grossing film series of all time.

“Harry Potter is really the pioneer of opening up how young people and readers could be consumers of film and other products as well,” Dr Smith says.

“It’s been common for popular children’s novels to be adapted into film but it took Harry Potter to show you could actually turn a book series into eight successful films and the audience would support that the whole way through.

“The profit on those films and all of those books is astronomical.”

The series has also led to a film studio tour in London which opened in 2012, the Pottermore website and its regular flow of updates and insights from Rowling, and the launch of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter theme parks around the world.

As Dr Smith says, readers can “literally immerse” themselves in the world of Harry Potter.

Why Is The Series So Addictive

The author has written the series in such a way that allows anyone to immerse themselves into the thrilling universe of Harry Potter and imagine themselves being a part of that world. Once the Pottermore website was created, the involvement in the story got amplified by manifold. The website allowed the fans get to immerse deeper into the Harry Potter universe and get sorted into the Hogwarts house to get their own wands and Patronus.

Even J.K. Rowling is active on Pottermore giving additions through her interview to the franchise allowing the fans to get extremely involved in the universe. As there are new spin-off series that contain five movies that are being released periodically the author can provide constant new information regarding the characters and what will happen to them once the series closes. The constant information-sharing regarding their favorite characters and the new characters being developed for the authors franchise have kept fans hooked.

These are some aspects that have somewhat enlightened the answer asto why is Harry Potter so popularamong its fans and there is no stagnation compared to other such popular series.

Top 10 Reasons Why Harry Potter is Still So Beloved

Sam Jordison at The Guardian calls it the “perfect 21st century marketing campaign.”

Last month, a “coming soon” web page popped up promising something unique would be happening soon.

It was soon revealed that J.K. Rowling and her marketing team had dreamed up a new way to extend the Harry Potter brand even further through e-books.

“The most impressive thing of all, though, is the way Rowling has managed to present the whole thing as an act of altruism,” writes Jordison. This isn’t necessarily hogwash: at this stage in her fantastically lucrative career, money presumably isn’t the driving force for Rowling and there’s every chance that she does love the fans who have made her so successful.”

Jordison also notes, “Everyone knows the most important rule of selling is to convince the sucker who’s paying that you’re doing them a favour …”

Harry Potter: What Makes It Most Successful Series In Film History

Harry Potter is the most commercially successful series in film history.

But how and why?

Remarkably, no matter who the particular director is, or the specific release date , each of the seven chapters was a hit, and give and take, grossing domestically the same amount of money.

See Table below.

Moreover, the popular appeal of each film is also not conditioned by the relative artistic quality of the given film, or by the critics reviews. Naturally, some installments were more highly acclaimed than others.

Looking back, at least four elements have contributed to the continuous, immense success of the Harry Potter series.

First and foremost, the magic of Rowlings densely plotted and emotionally involving books. Reportedly, the single thread of the story was very much by design, and the author had a very clear idea of the direction of Harrys journey. Its important to remember that when the first picture was made, only three of the seven books had been published.

Second, the consistency of the high-caliber casting, manifest in two ways. The fact that the three leads, Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger, were played by the same gifted actors, Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson, should not be underestimated. .

Chris Columbus, essentially a craftsman, launched the franchise, directing the first two movies, Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone and Harry Potter and the Chmaber of Secrets .
