In the series, we’ll likely find out how he evades capture and increases his power over the wizarding world.
Rowling herself said the series’ five movies will span “19 years,” meaning it will end in 1945, the same year Dumbledore dueled Grindelwald.
So the rest of the “Fantastic Beasts” movies will take place just as Grindelwald is rising to power, and may end in a Dumbledore-Grindelwald showdown.
In the first movie, we also briefly meet Hector Fawley, the Minister for Magic from Britain, who recognizes Scamander. On Pottermore, Rowling tells us that Fawley “did not take sufficiently seriously the threat presented to the world wizarding community by Gellert Grindelwald,” and lost his job in 1939 to Leonard Spencer Moon, who “enjoyed a good working relationship with Winston Churchill.”
Fantastic Beasts 3 Cast
There are a lot of familiar faces in the Fantastic Beasts 3 cast. Unsurprisingly, the movies central quartet is all back in action: Eddie Redmayne as magizoologist Newt Scamander, Katherine Waterston as Auror Tina Goldstein, Dan Fogler as Newts No-Maj BFF Jacob Kowalski, and Alison Sudol as Legilimens Queenie Goldstein. Callum Turner also confirmed to Yahoo! Movies that hell be back as Newts older Auror brother Theseus Scamander, while Jude Law is reprising his role as the younger incarnation of Wizarding World mainstay and Hogwarts professor Albus Dumbledore.
The major casualty of The Crimes of Grindelwald was Leta Lestrange, who sacrificed herself to save Newt, Tina, Jacob, Theseus, and more that means were only likely to see Zoë Kravitz in flashback or via magic .
There are also recognizable figures on the dark side of the Fantastic Beasts 3 cast, with Ezra Miller back as troubled Credence Barebone. Wed also be incredibly surprised if Claudia Kim doesnt also come back as Nagini, the Maledictus fated to become Voldemorts snake sidekick ahead of the Harry Potter era.
The biggest change is Grindelwald. Johnny Depp has stepped down from the role following a court battle, and Mads Mikkelsen has been cast as his replacement, while Colin Farrell who many hoped would return to the series was not able to take on the part as he’s committed to filming The Batman. The switch, though, is not something Mikkelsen has talked to Depp about, per The Sunday Times.
In Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them Grindelwald Tries To Start A War
Let’s get some of the timeline straight.
“Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” takes place in New York City in 1926. Dumbledore and Grindelwald’s whirlwind summer at Godric’s Hollow took place around 1899. And we know Dumbledore defeated Grindelwald in a duel in 1945.
So by the time “Fantastic Beasts” takes place, Grindelwald is in his 40s and his power is on the rise. But he never became a significant part of British magical history, so his activities must have been mostly confined to Eastern and Central Europe.
At the end of “Fantastic Beasts,” Percival Graves the head auror at MACUSA and seemingly the second-most-powerful person in the American wizarding community turns out to be Grindelwald in disguise.
Throughout the film, Graves enlists Credence Barebone, an orphan who appears to be a No-Maj, into helping him find an Obscurial. An Obscurial is a hard-to-control magical force that’s unleashed when a wizard or witch doesn’t express their magical powers.
There’s a big showdown between Graves, Newt Scamander , and Barebone. Graves is brought to his knees, and Scamander performs a “revelio” charm to reveal him as Grindelwald.
“Will we die, just a little?” Grindelwald tells Scamander as he’s hauled away.

Here Are Some Ways This Zany Plot Twist Might Work Though Again Its A Huge Stretch
Its always possible that Aurelius is Albuss half-brother, and that Albuss mother had an affair with someone we dont know about. But here, again, we run into the age issue. If Albuss mother, Kendra Dumbledore, had a baby out of wedlock after her husbands death, the youngest that kid could be in 1927 is 28.
Thats because its well-known that Albuss mother, Kendra Dumbledore, died in 1899 in a tragic accident caused by her daughter Ariana, whose own magic had been difficult to control since the Muggle attack that left her debilitated and indirectly sent her father to prison. Ariana herself, we should note, later also died tragically in a standoff between Albus, their brother, and Grindelwald.
There are some other ways this twist could be finagled: For instance, Credence could actually be 10 years older than he thinks he is by virtue of a lot of handwavey magic. But thats a lot of trouble to go to in order to explain the timeline discrepancy.
Another possibility is that Kendra Dumbledore didnt actually die in the 1899 accident, that she could have somehow faked her own death, and gone on to have another kid. But that assumes shed be willing to leave her children parentless for some as-yet-unknown reason, and also opens up the question of why shed do that, and what eventually happened to her and how, again, Dumbledore and a horde of gossip columnists never uncovered this information before.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald is the latest addition to the new J.K Rowling franchise.
Before you get stuck back into the wizarding world, you may be wondering how the movies all relate and whether Fantastic Beasts and Harry Potter are linked.
The simple answer is yes.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them was based off a book of the same name written by Rowling in 2001.
The book was a textbook that Harry was supposed to have used in the first book, written by Newt Scamander.

There have been rumours this new film might be set in Brazil, but nothing has been confirmed yet.
Most of the cast will be returning with Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander, Jude Law as Albus Dumbledore and Ezra Miller as Credence Barebone.
However, villain Grindelwald will now be played by actor Mads Mikkelsen after Johnny Depp was asked to resign from the role.
Otherwise, Warner Bros are being tight lipped on the new film, so we’ll have to wait and see for some more details to be revealed.
The movie was supposed to be out in November 2021, but has been delayed due to the pandemic.

Grindelwald: Was Able To Resist The Most Powerful Legilimens Of All Time
After Grindelwald was arrested and thrown into a jail cell, he became susceptible to Voldemort, who was desperate to find the Elder Wand. However, Grindelwald was able to resist Voldemort — who is considered the most powerful Legilimens of all time.
He did not divulge the location of the wand, as his final act of redemption. He even taunted Voldemort and showed no fear in the face of his potential death, again, another thing he had over Voldemort.

Harry Potter And The Sorcerer’s Stone
We wouldn’t have had the tremendous, perfect casting of Daniel Radcliffe, Emily Watson and Rupert Grint without this movie. We wouldn’t have the perfectly pitched Harry Potter aesthetic. Perhaps most importantly, we wouldn’t have had the sublime John Williams score. Outside of Star Wars and Indiana Jones, is there a more iconic and memorable Williams theme? I’d argue no.
With fantastic movies down the line, Prisoner of Azkaban, being the most obvious example, it’s easy to forget Harry Potter’s sequels were following a visual and stylistic template designed, in part, by the steady hand of Chris Columbus. The man directed Home Alone and Mrs Doubtfire for god’s sake, he knew what he was doing!
The Philosopher’s Stone is one of his best. It’s far more of a kids movie than what would come later for Harry Potter, but that’s entirely appropriate given the source material. It’s timeless, smart, visually brilliant and a great movie to watch with children to this day.

Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix
Order of the Phoenix had a lot of memorable moments. Some were fun, like Arthur Weasley vibing in Muggle world, and others were tragic, like the death of Sirius Black. The film also featured one of the franchise’s better villains in Dolores Umbridge. But to me, the film was significant for being the first time visual effects technology caught up to the story Harry Potter was trying to tell. The duel between Dumbledore and Voldermort in the Ministry of Magic? That’s worth a million Galleons.

What Wand Does Grindelwald Have
Though nobody speaks of the Elder Wand in this film, Grindelwald presumably already wields the most powerful wand in existence. According to Rowlings timeline, Grindelwald steals the Elder Wand from wand maker Gregorovitch sometime between 1900 and 1926, before the events of Fantastic Beasts. Grindelwald presumably used the wand of Graves when he was disguised as that wizard in the last film. Now, he has reunited with his old wand, which helps explain the power he wields in the graveyard scene at the end of the film.

The Two Planned A Revolution
In his youth, Dumbledore wasn’t entirely full of good intentions. His portrait told Harry in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” that he was filled with anger and wanted to shake up the world.
“You cannot imagine how his ideas caught me, Harry, inflamed me,” Dumbledore’s portrait said at the end of the book. “Muggles forced into subservience. We wizards triumphant. Grindelwald and I, the glorious young leaders of the revolution.”
According to Skeeter, who also wrote a not-entirely-accurate biography of Dumbledore shortly after his death, Dumbledore and Grindelwald planned to overturn the Statue of Secrecy, which keeps magical folk secret from non-magical folk, and establish a wizarding ruling class over Muggles.
They had different reasons. For Grindelwald, it was because he was an evil dude. For Dumbledore, it was a reaction to his sister Ariana being tormented by Muggles until she went mad.
The two coined the phrase Grindelwald used on his crusade decades later: “For the greater good.”
Dumbledore and Grindelwald planned to leave Godric’s Hollow to pursue their ambition. Aberforth, Albus’s brother, confronted him, saying he needed to take care of their sister Ariana. Grindelwald, enraged, attacked Aberforth, and Albus defended him. In the three-way duel, Ariana was killed.
After that, Dumbledore stayed home to take care of his brother. Meanwhile, Grindelwald fled from the duel and went on to find at least one of the Hallows on his own.

Fantastic Beasts 3 4 And 5 Cast: Who’s Coming Back For Fantastic Beasts 3
As mentioned above, Johnny Depp will not be reprising his role as Grindelwald after he was asked to resign from the role by Warner Bros. Depp had shot one scene as Grindelwald for the third movie, but we don’t know if this will end up in the movie or not.
The role of Grindelwald will now be played by Doctor Strange and Hannibal star Mads Mikkelsen. It’s not yet clear how the recast will be handled in the movie, but given the world of Harry Potter, it could easily be put down to a potion, accident or magical disguise.
Mikkelsen revealed that he didn’t talk to Depp about the role and he took it on because his daughter is a fan of the Harry Potter franchise. Don’t go expecting a Depp impression from Mikkelsen though.
“I have been a fan of Johnny Depp since I saw him as a young man, and to try to bring his intensity and his way of doing it into my work is a no-go. I have to find my own, because his is unique, and I just have to let that be, and find a different path,” he said.
If he had the chance, Mikkelsen would have wanted to speak to Depp about the role though, but he just didn’t “know him in that sense”.
” called me and they were obviously in a hurry, and I loved the script and so said yes. And I know it was controversial for many people, but that’s just the way it plays out once in a while,” he added.
This doesn’t completely rule out us seeing Leta again in the series, but it would have to take the form of a flashback.
How Is Fantastic Beasts Linked To Harry Potter
The movie is set before Harry Potter, but what happened is key to the movies we know and love.
These are the characters we’ve heard about.
We know already that Grindelwald tracked down the Elder Wand – will we see this in Fantastic Beasts?
Tom Riddle is also born in 1926 – the year the movie covers, and we already knew Newt was in America.
Now that gets fleshed out.
In the next few movies – the five in total – will explain how Grindelwald was defeated and set up what we know as the Potter universe.
1945 – the year of Dumbledore’s and Grindelwald’s duel. We expect to see that in the fifth movie.
In 1938 Riddle starts school where Dumbledore teaches, he finishes school in 1945…

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald Is Already Giving Us Chills
And its only going to get colder
Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows Part 2 premiered in 2011 and the world just hasnt been the same since. Tears were shed on the red carpet and in theaters as everyone bid farewell to Hogwarts, its students and its professors. It marked the end of an era we still havent really let go of, which is why Fantastic Beasts has been a very welcome addition.
The first Fantastic Beasts movie premiered in 2016 and while there were high expectations, the team behind the film was able to deliver on almost every aspect. Yes, the magic that we grew up watching was as beautiful as we remembered, but it also opened up a darker yet more fantastical world.
So What Does That Mean For The Series
The most obvious implication for the rest of the Fantastic Beasts series is thematic. J.K. Rowling loves parallelism, so if the Dumbledore connection is true, then shes likely setting up a bunch of parallels between Credence/Aurelius and Harry himself.
Theyre both orphans, both raised by abusive guardians who were extremely paranoid of witches. Both grew up completely separated from the wizarding world, yet both eventually discovered themselves to belong to extremely prominent magical families with hugely important roles to play in the ongoing struggle between light and dark wizards. Both are extremely powerful wizards in their own right and crucially, both seem to have been scoped out and targeted by dark wizards wanting to exploit them for their own agendas.
Of course, the way their parallel origin stories play out has been quite different for each of them thus far. Credence has been alternately courted and cast aside by Grindelwald, depending on how useful he appears to be. Harry was initially marked for death by Voldemort, and apart from a few moments of tempting him, that pretty much never changed.
However, given that the previously established canonical timeline seems to be rapidly derailing and speeding up, theres just no telling where well land. Only one thing seems certain: What we know of the wizarding world will probably be very different by the end of Fantastic Beasts than when the franchise began.

Is It Any Good
The production values are amazing in this latest Potterverse adventure, but there are so many convoluted subplots and new characters that some wizarding favorites are underused. Redmayne continues to prove that he was born for this role, but Waterston’s part is greatly reduced, forcing her mostly into the background until the second half. Zoe Kravitz and officially join the cast as Leta Lestrange, Newt’s adolescent crush, and Theseus Scamander, Newt’s Auror brother, respectively. But neither character feels fully developed, despite a couple of sweet flashbacks to Scamander’s Hogwarts days . Nagini is more of a sympathetic character than fans might have imagined. As is Credence, who — as played by the gifted Miller — is understandably hurt and desperate. And Law does his best to embody all that Potterheads know to be true about Albus Dumbledore: He’s wise and generous but also withholding and somewhat tortured about his past.
