Who Is Scrimgeour In Harry Potter

As Minister For Magic

Scrimgeour reads from the Will of Albus Dumbledore
These are dark times, there is no denying. Our world has, perhaps, faced no greater threat than it does today. But I say this to our citizenry: we, ever your servants, will continue to defend your liberty and repel the forces that seek to take it from you! Your Ministry remains strong!

With Voldemort finally into the open and declaring open war on Britain’s wizarding and Muggle communities, it forced the wizarding community to unite and call for Cornelius Fudge’s resignation. In the fortnight following the Battle of the Department of Mysteries and the Ministry’s acknowledgement of Lord Voldemort’s return in June of 1996,MinisterCornelius Fudge was, as The Quibbler went on to report, “chased from his office.” Fudge left office in disgrace and was replaced by the ostensibly more proactive Scrimgeour.Gawain Robards replaced Scrimgeour as Head of the Auror Office. Soon after, Scrimgeour made a speech to the the Ministry and the Daily Prophet about “dark times”, and trying to better protect Britain from dark wizards than the previous year, as the Ministry under Fudge had denied any evidence of Voldemort’s return and branded Albus Dumbledore and Harry Potter liars for saying the opposite.

Anyone Could Touch The Sword Of Gryffindor Regardless Of Their House

Snape would certainly be able to hold the Sword of Gryffindor, being a Gryffindor isn’t a requirement for holding or even using it. Two goblins both touched the Sword of Gryffindor, and neither of them were in Gryffindor since they wouldn’t have gone to Hogwarts.

In addition, while she didn’t have the real one in her vault, Bellatrix thought she had the Sword of Gryffindor, and despite being a Slytherin didn’t question her ability to touch it. In fact, she did get ahold of the true sword, and was able to hold it, although Griphook lied to her and said that it was a fake.

Out of the corners of his eyes, Harry saw Bellatrix bearing down upon the werewolf, the sword of Gryffindor gripped tightly in her hand, her face waxen. – Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Chapter 23

She waves it in Greyback’s face, like she was going to use it, and although it’s the real Sword she was able to wield it.

Where did you find this sword? she repeated, brandishing it in his face. Snape sent it to my vault in Gringotts! – Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Chapter 23

She examined the Sword as well, and though this is indeed the real one, she is able to hold it and examine it.

What only a true Gryffindor can do is pull the Sword of Gryffindor out of the Sorting Hat.

While anyone can touch, hold or wield the Sword of Gryffindor, only a true Gryffindor can pull it out of the Sorting Hat. Dumbledore explains this to Harry after he retrieved the Sword from the Sorting Hat.

He Was Pretty Ungrateful

Do you guys remember Hagrid? Hagrid was nothing but utterly devoted to Harry and his friends, going above and beyond to care for Harry. Heck, let’s talk about Arthur, a man who did not have much to share, but went out of his way to share what he had with Harry â even when it almost cost him his life. At the end of the day, who did Harry name is youngest son after? A headmaster who used him as a pawn in a grander game, and a dude who really only vaguely helped him because he had the hots for Harry’s mom. Okay, it makes sense that he might not honor his current father-in-law due to the idea that maybe Ron would or due to the fact that he probably thought it was an honor enough that he married his daughter. But what about Hagrid?

It goes deeper than that. As a child Harry loved Hagrid, visiting him any chance he got. But as he grew up, he sort of shed his devoted guardian. Did Harry bother to help Hagrid with Buckbeak’s trial? Did he ever once go and visit Grawp after Hagrid asked him to? Did he bother to warn Hagrid that he wasn’t going to take Care of Magical Creatures anymore? No. Once he no longer really needed Hagrid, he basically stopped caring. This was the man who cradled Harry as a baby in Sirius’ flying motorcycle, who cried at the notion of leaving poor Harry on the steps of the Dursleys… what thanks did Hagrid get?

How many of you are still waiting for your Hogwarts letter? Don’t lie, I bet the answer is “every single one of you.” Hogwarts is essentially a dream come true for literally anyone. Every single subject you can study at Hogwarts is utterly fascinating. Charms? PLEASE. Transfiguration? Oh heck yeah. Care of Magical Creatures? Bring on the unicorns! Even History of Magic is more interesting than the most interesting non-magical class you have ever taken. If I went to Hogwarts I would be studying every day, doing extra credit, and thanking my lucky stars that I’m getting a world-class magical education, living in a castle, sleeping in a four-poster bed, and eating gourmet meals three times a day.

After a lifetime of neglect and sadness, what does Harry do when given the magical chance of a lifetime? He barely studies, opting instead to lean heavily on help from Hermione.

He Didn’t Fully Understand What A Wizarding War Even Meant

All throughout Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Harry struggles with Umbridge in an attempt to get her, or anyone at the Ministry for that matter, to acknowledge the fact that Voldemort is back. This is a very noble thing that he does, but the moment everyone accepts that he isn’t lying, Harry seems to immediately forget that a wizarding war will affect more than just Harry Potter. Suddenly everything becomes a grudge match between him and Voldemort, even though Harry is not the first person who lost their loved ones to Lord Voldemort. His life was not the only life that was ruined by He Who Shall Not Be Named, but for the entire series, Harry does not seem to understand that a war is just that… a war. Harry may have been the Chosen One, but he was only one cog in a vast machine.

Where Was Rufus Scrimgeour Before Harry Potter And The Half Blood Prince And What Was He Doing

In Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, when Fudge went with Dolores Umbridge to arrest Dumbledore for supposedly setting up the “Dumbledore’s Army”, Fudge brought 2 Aurors with him. Why didn’t Fudge bring Rufus Scrimgeour, as the latter was supposed to be the Head of Auror Office during the events of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix? Also, during the final duel between Dumbledore and Voldemort in the Ministry Atrium, the Aurors again were sent to arrest the captured Death Eaters in the aftermath of Battle of Department of Mysteries. Where was Rufus Scrimgeour?

Why did the other Aurors show up in books 4 and 5 except Rufus Scrimgeour? I recall from Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince that Rufus was first introduced as the new Minister after sacking of Cornelius Fudge. So, that means in book 6, Rufus seemed to have come out of nowhere. So, where was Rufus before book 6?

If Snape Is A Slytherin How Come He Was Able To Touch The Sword Of Gryffindor

Rufus Scrimgeour (Bill Nighy) in Harry Potter 7 1/2

“Only a true Gryffindor could have pulled that out of the hat.”

  • Dumbledore, in Chamber of Secrets

Snape carried the sword of Gryffindor to the Forest of Dean, and placed it in the frozen lake in the forest. Simple question, If Snape is a Slytherin, then how come he could carry it from Dumbledore’s portrait to the Forest of Dean? Since the sword can only be carried or touched by a Gryffindor.

The houses who carry/touch this sword are:

  • Ragnuk the First – Goblin

  • Godric Gryffindor – Obviously Gryffindor

  • Griphook – Same as Ragnuk

  • Neville Longbottom – Gryffindor

The majority of those who carry the sword are Gryffindors, and Snape is the only one who is different from them.

Eventually, after serving as an Auror for some time and having fought Dark Wizards for most of his working life, Scrimgeour rose to the post of Head of the Auror Office, which he occupied at least in the early-to-mid-1990s. In this capacity, Scrimgeour worked alongside John Dawlish, Proudfoot, Savage, Nymphadora Tonks, Kingsley Shacklebolt, and Gawain Robards.

When he was the Head of the Auror Office, he often questioned Tonks and Shacklebolt about Sirius Black, as they were in charge of the investigation of his whereabouts after his escape from Azkaban.

  • Rufus Scrimgeour : I won’t pretend to be your friend, Mr. Potter. But I’m not your enemy.

Why Did Rufus Scrimgeour Station Aurors At Hogwarts If They Were Not Powerful Enough To Stop Voldemort

In book 6, why did Scrimgeour station Aurors at Hogwarts Castle to protect the students?

Did he not know that Aurors are not powerful enough to stop Lord Voldemort himself?

  • 3Nobody was powerful enough to stop Voldemort on their own, except probably Dumbledore. So, what else could he do? At least the aurors would buy some time for the students to hide/escape I guess.Aug 25 ’18 at 10:24
  • 4Aug 25 ’18 at 11:03
  • 2Well, one Auror might not be able to but a bunch of them could face & maybe even hold their grounds against Voldemort. After all, it is in their job description to protect the wizarding world from the Dark arts .

While not definite proof of Scrimgeour’s thinking, dialogue from both Dumbledore and Voldemort imply that Aurors can stop or at least affect Voldemort.

At the confrontation at the Ministry in Order of the Phoenix, Dumbledore says:

“It was foolish to come here tonight, Tom,” said Dumbledore calmly, The Aurors are on their way-“

Voldemort replies:

“By which time I shall be gone, and you dead!”

Dumbledore feels the Aurors can deal with Voldemort and Voldemort, instead of saying, “I can deal with them after you are dead” is planning on being gone.

So to me, the conclusion is that Dumbledore has confidence and Voldemort is reluctant about confronting multiple Aurors. Scrimgeour may have the same thoughts.

They were the best that he had and they would at least slow Voldemort down if not scare him off.

Judicial System And Corruption

HP7 New Characters Photoshoot (Rufus Scrimgeour)

In the books and films, the wizarding courts have displayed at times, a marked lack of interest in evidence for or against a suspect, even relying on personal prejudice to decide the outcome as quickly as possible. Not all of the accused are even given trials, as in the case of Sirius Black. In Order of the Phoenix, the Ministry is shown to be quite prepared to decree and enforce draconian laws without notice. At times, the Ministry can also seem uninterested in solving serious problems, choosing instead to ignore or cover up bad news. In Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Fudge takes a long time to respond to the attacks on Hogwarts. In the fourth and fifth instalments, Fudge refuses to believe that Lord Voldemort has returned, despite mounting evidence. The Ministry even mounts a campaign to damage Harry Potter‘s credibility, an effort fuelled in part by Fudge’s fear that Albus Dumbledore wants to forcibly remove him from his position. Eventually, the Ministry is forced to acknowledge the emergency and act on it. Fudge is subsequently removed from office for incompetence and replaced by Rufus Scrimgeour.

When interviewed, Rowling stated that when Harry, Ron and Hermione work for the Ministry, they change it significantly, making it less corrupt.

Department Of Magical Law Enforcement

The Department of Magical Law Enforcement is a combination of police and justice facilities. It is located on the second level of the Ministry of Magic. Bartemius Crouch Sr. once headed the department, prior to the first book. At the beginning of the series, it is headed by Amelia Bones, who is replaced by Pius Thicknesse after Voldemort murders her. Thicknesse is replaced by Yaxley after Voldemort has Thicknesse appointed the puppet Minister for his regime. By the events of Cursed Child, Harry Potter has become its head.

According to Rowling, this is the department that Hermione Granger joins, after the events of the seventh book, transferring from the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures, where she began her post-Hogwarts career.

Auror Office

The Ministry employs aurors to pursue and apprehend Dark wizards. According to Minerva McGonagall, the Auror Office takes in new recruits with a minimum of 5 N.E.W.T.s . She suggests that Potions, Defence Against the Dark Arts, Transfiguration, Charms, and Herbology N.E.W.T.s are the most appropriate subjects for someone who aspires to gain admission to the training program. A potential recruit also has to pass “a series of character and aptitude tests.” Nymphadora Tonks mentions that the program’s courses of study include “Concealment and Disguise” and “Stealth and Tracking,” and that the training is hard to pass with high marks.

Department Of Magical Games And Sports

The Department of Magical Games and Sports, seen as the most relaxed department , deals with organising sports events like the Quidditch World Cup and the Triwizard Tournament. Ludo Bagman used to be the Head of Department here, but his gambling problem forced him to flee from Goblin creditors. The department is located on the seventh level of the Ministry of Magic, and includes the British and Irish Quidditch League Headquarters, Official Gobstones Club, and the Ludicrous Patents Office â other sports and games-related aspects of the Harry Potter world.
