The Hogwarts Wizarding School

This institution was founded approximately 990 AD by four of the most powerful and notable wizards in history, including Godric Gryffindor, Rowena Ravenclaw, Helga Hufflepuff, and Salazar Slytherin.

Each of these four individuals wanted to bring certain aspects out of the students attending the institution.

In fact, each of the houses was named after one of these founders.

However, Slytherin disagreed with allowing muggle students and left.

Much of this place is related to how things work in the real world in the United Kingdom, particularly in its education systems.

After all, the author of the series was a schoolteacher in England.

This includes the way the school is set up, such as the years its members attend it.

Instead of breaking it up into three and four years like in the United States, students stay the full seven years before they graduate and move on.

These details may just seem solely related to this fictional world if one isnt familiar with these systems.

To really understand how this world works, its important to at least have an overview of its background and where its aspects come from.

While the previous section is enough to go on, you may also look into it further if youre interested in the subject.

Almost surprisingly, the series has developed in people an interest in the way education works.

Throughout the series, you see that many school allegiances remain throughout a wizards lifetime.

House Descriptions With Sass Featuring Ravenclaw

We don’t see a lot of Ravenclaws in the story; the ones we really get to know are Luna, Cho, and a few others. That being said, this house tends to make a good impression because of Ravenclaw’s focus on intelligence. Many a kid who started reading Harry Potter started reading it because they liked the idea of being in the “smart house.” However, there’s more to being a Ravenclaw than simple intelligence. Ravenclaw is the Hogwarts House where individuality is the most celebrated and lots of different people can come together to talk about basically whatever they want. It’s honestly really nice to see that kind of thing these days. Ravenclaws pride themselves on being themselves all the time, but more than that, this house is the type to pride themselves on being the most informed and being prepared for every situation.

The Dark Triad Measure

The Dark Triad encapsulates three personality traits often deemed negative : Psychopathy ; Machiavellianism ; and Narcissism . To improve reliability, we again replaced the original questionnaire with an alternative. While the original authors selected the Dark Triad Dirty Dozen, we selected the Short Dark Triad . It evaluates the three personality traits with nine items per trait on a five-point Likert-scale . Total scores for each IPIP-50 or SD3 subscale are obtained by summing the respective item scores.

What Are The Characteristics Of Hogwarts Houses In Harry Potter

Notable members are Luna Lovegood, Filius Flitwick, and Cho Chang. Ravenclaws ghost, The Grey Lady, is notable in helping Harry in finding the Ravenclaw diadem, and her story may reflect themes of power, betrayal, envy, and pride.

In members like Luna Lovegood, Ravenclaw might be interpreted in the fact that there is knowledge in everything, even in that that might not even exist, or seems impossible to believe.

HUFFLEPUFF is described as the house of the loyal and the fair. The mascot is a badger- the colors are yellow and black.

The founder is Helga Hufflepuff, and the earth is their element. The Hufflepuff ghost is The Fat Friar. Hufflepuffs are seen as loyal, having a good sense of fair play, and are hard-working and kind.

They are, however, slighted by others, and are seen as people who do not fit into the other three houses, or are seen as weak or untalented.

Notable members are Cedric Diggory, Nymphadora Tonks, and Newton Scamander. Hufflepuff might have been used as a way of seeing how other misfits are unjustly seen within society and maybe saying that these supposed oddballs have deeper depths and have their own interests, skill sets, and talents.

SLYTHERIN is described as the house of the ambitious and the cunning. Their device is the serpent, and their colors are green and silver. Its founder is Salazar Slytherin, and their element is water.

They are seen as the worst house in the series and produces the darkest wizards and witches.

What Your Harry Potter Hogwarts House Says About You

With pre-order sales for the latest book topping the charts in a matter of hours, a new theme park opening this month in Hollywood, and a new movie coming out in November, it is clear that Harry Potter fandom isnt going anywhere. The series follows the classic trajectory of a bildungsroman, or coming-of-age story, and has a legion of followers of all ages and from all backgrounds. It also has about 450 million copies in circulation.

True, the series falls under the genre of fantasy, but its popularity may be due to author J.K. Rowlings ability to create such realistic and relatable characters in spite of their fantastical surroundings.

The characters are so engaging because they remind us of ourselves or someone we know. Weve all had that boss or teacher who rightfully incurred our distaste like Dolores Umbridge; or a friend who could be a little bit of a know-it-all like Hermione Granger. Perhaps we saw a part of ourselves in the pleasant oddball Luna Lovegood, or cheered Neville Longbottom on as though his struggle to overcome teenage awkwardness was symbolic of our own. We fell in love with these characters because they were familiar, and they were familiar because they are congruent with common DISC personality styles. We found it equally easy to identify with the houses of Hogwarts for similar reasons.

What Hogwarts Classes Are Taught To Two Houses At Once

I remember from my mumble about nine mumble rereads of the Harry Potter series that the following classes Harry took were taught to more than one house in the same lesson:

  • Potions with the Slytherins
  • Care of Magical Creatures with the Slytherins
  • broomstick riding with at least the Slytherins

I don’t remember any student from a house that isn’t Gryffindor being mentioned in the sections on Transfiguration, Charms, Defense Against Dark Arts, History of Magic, or Divination. That would mean McGonagall had to teach twice as many classes as Snape, if both subjects got the same number of lessons .

Were any subjects other than Potions, Herbology, and Care of Magical Creatures taught to more than one house in the same lesson? And do we know why some subjects are taught to more students at the same time than others?

The Science Behind The Magic The Relation Of The Harry Potter Sorting Hat Quiz To Personality And Human Values

Lea Jakob, Eduardo Garcia-Garzon, Hannes Jarke, Fabian Dablander; The Science Behind the Magic? The Relation of the Harry Potter Sorting Hat Quiz to Personality and Human Values. Collabra: Psychology 1 January 2019; 5 : 31. doi:

The Harry Potter series describes the adventures of a boy and his peers in a fictional world at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. In the series, pupils get appointed to one of four groups at the beginning of their education based on their personality traits. The author of the books has constructed an online questionnaire that allows fans to find out their House affiliation. Crysel, Cook, Schember, and Webster argued that being sorted into a particular Hogwarts House through the Sorting Hat Quiz is related to empirically established personality traits. We replicated their study while improving on sample size, methods, and analysis. Although our results are similar, effect sizes are small overall, which attenuates the claims by Crysel et al. The effect vanishes when restricting the analysis to participants who desired, but were not sorted into a particular House. On a theoretical level, we extend previous research by also analysing the relation of the Hogwarts Houses to Schwartzs Basic Human Values but find only moderate or no relations.

Distinctive traits for each House based on the first three authors readings of the Harry Potter books.

Why Should We Care About All This

Hogwarts and Harry Potter may be pretend, but the franchises status as a cultural icon is very real. For those who grew up with the Harry Potter craze, the Hogwarts house you identify with can define you and explain your personality to others. For example, many millennials list their house on their social media or dating profiles as a way to succinctly explain their personality and values . Before writing this blog post I discussed the article with a friend and we talked about how people in our generation can make snap decisions on a persons character based on their Hogwarts house. We agreed that because many people care about Hogwarts houses as an indicator of personality and character, its good to know if houses have statistical trends that justify or explain the judgments we make based on them.

Hufflepuff: House Of The Loyal

"The Different Houses" by gothic

This is of the most inclusive houses at Hogwarts and values loyalty, dedication, patience, fairness, and hard work.

While its members arent the most ambitious, they are quite pleasant and friendly.

The animal that represents this group is the badger, and it associates with the magical element of earth.

The colors yellow and black correspond to this, with yellow representing plants such as wheat and black representing the soil.

While these members are modest and dont favor a certain aptitude, they have a tenacious and persistent moral code.

They treat everyone as equals and values people no matter what family they come from.

Even though they dont have a particular interest in ambition or rivalries, various famous magic users come from this group, including Newton Scamander from the Fantastic Beasts series.

The difference is that they dont boast about it.

The Hufflepuff ghost is the Fat Friar, who is a cheerful fellow whos also forgiving.

As his nickname suggests, he dedicated himself throughout his life to religion.

He also lived around the founding of Hogwarts and was taught by Helga Hufflepuff herself during his educational years.

While he dedicated himself to generosity and charity, he had a penchant for loving food.

He was executed because other clergymen were suspicious of his magical abilities.

The cheery and amiable nature makes Hufflepuffs some of the most likable witches and wizards.

What’s The Motto What’s The Motto With You

We hear a lot about the different philosophies of every Hogwarts House, to the point that we all tend to know what house we’re talking about when we rattle off certain traits that the house values. However, across all seven books, those traits can boil down to a few simple phrases that the Sorting Hat could have said every year instead of the poems it normally rattles off with. Gryffindors, for example, can be summed up by talking about their occasional bouts of recklessness and how brave they can be in the face of adversity. Slytherins could be summed up by their undeniable privilege in the Wizarding World despite the hugely unfavorable reputation they have in the school, showing their ambition. Ravenclaws can be summed up not by their intelligence, but by their analytical abilities, the way they put their mind to something. Meanwhile, Hufflepuffs can be defined by their kindness and their savagery when their loved ones are threatened.

Gryffindor Vs Slytherin: The Door Slam Test

The books and movies tend to treat Gryffindor and Slytherin like totally different houses where the people have nothing in common, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. In reality, Gryffindor and Slytherin are getting more of a focus here because they’re so similar. Gryffindors are the type to confront a situation head on and be this unstoppable force, while Slytherins are content to adapt to situations and wait for the right moment to strike. The difference is that a Gryffindor would distance themselves from people over their beliefs, like how the Weasleys took a lot of distance from Percy and vice versa when he chose to stick by the Ministry for the sake of his career. Meanwhile, a Slytherin like Narcissa Malfoy would absolutely let her beliefs fall by the wayside for the sake of her family, like when she let Harry live so she could find her son.

Hufflepuff Traits And Strengths:

Loyalty: Hufflepuffs make the most loyal friends a person can find. They also identify strongly with their House, as seen in The Goblet of Fire where the majority of Hufflepuffs turn against Harry because they think he’s trying to undermine one of their own, Cedric Diggory.

Dedication: Hufflepuffs are some of the most hard-working students and employees in the Wizarding World. While they may not have a Ravenclaw’s natural love of learning and knowledge or a Slytherin’s cunning and ambition, Hufflepuffs try their hardest in everything they do… and are rewarded for it.

Honesty: Hufflepuffs feel a strong desire to speak the truth and behave honestly in everything that they do. Gryffindors also value this trait, which is part of what makes Hufflepuff-Gryffindor friendships so strong.

Humbleness: Unlike the other houses, which are all prone to arrogance, Hufflepuffs almost never display this trait. They are modest and humble in everything that they do and tend to stay away from those who exude self-importance.

Results Concerning Human Values

Which Harry Potter House Are You?

We conduct a similar analysis as above for the Human Values data; Figure shows the raw data. Table displays the posterior model probabilities. Note that the second column indicates our confirmatory hypotheses and that our approach can be easily generalized to multiple order restrictions. For example, we predicted that both Gryffindor and Ravenclaw should score higher on the value Achievement than Hufflepuff and Slytherin. Such an order-constrained model is then compared against a null model and an unrestricted model . Our hypotheses for Conformity, Power, and Tradition were strongly supported and received the highest possible support. Howeverand similar to the personality measuresthe variance explained by assuming four distinct Houses differed across values, from 1% to 9.9% . In particular, Figure shows that the proportion of variance explained in each case varied across Human Values, but was generally low: 4.3% , 2.7% , 5.1% , 1% , 9.9% , 1% , 3.4% , 4.6% , 2.8% , 5.6% . The variance explained by the Human Values is slightly lower than the variance explained by the personality measures.

On each line, shows, for different Human Values, the posterior distribution for the proportion of variance explained by assuming four distinct Houses. Note that variance explained differs substantially between, say, Hedonism with 1% and Power with 9.9%.
