Chapter 1: The Patronus

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (Book 3) (Paperback)
Oh no… Much worse than that. You can exist without your soul, you know, as long as your brain and heart are still working. But you’ll have no sense of self anymore, no memory, no … anything. There’s no chance at all of recovery. You’ll just — exist. As an empty shell. And your soul is gone forever … lost.

Harry learning the Patronus Charm

Harry ceases speaking with Hermione, even though he knew she had good intentions with reporting the Firebolt. Ron is also no longer on speaking terms with Hermione because Crookshanks has been attacking Scabbers non-stop. Meanwhile, Harry starts his lessons with Lupin. Lupin tells Harry that the spell to drive off Dementors is called the Patronus Charm, instructs him in how to cast one, and lets him practise on a Boggart. Harry fails to produce a Patronus at first. This, however, is to be expected the Patronus Charm is well beyond O.W.L. standard. During his first lesson, Harry learns that Lupin was a friend of his father James back during their days at Hogwarts, and also knew Sirius Black as well.

In January, Slytherin beats Ravenclaw in their Quidditch match. Gryffindor’s chances of getting the Quidditch Cup are good, as long as they don’t lose in their own match against Ravenclaw.

The book was published in the United Kingdom on 8 July 1999 by Bloomsbury and in the United States on 8 September 1999 by Scholastic, Inc. Rowling found the book easy to write, finishing it just a year after she began writing it. The book sold 68,000 copies in just three days after its release in the United Kingdom and since has sold over three million in the country. The book won the 1999 Whitbread Children’s Book Award, the Bram Stoker Award, and the 2000 Locus Award for Best Fantasy Novel and was short-listed for other awards, including the Hugo.

Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban By Jk Rowling

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is the third book of the Harry Potter series by JK Rowling.

Harry is spending another dreadful summer at home with the Dursley’s when an unfortunate run in with Aunt Marge ends in her sudden balloon like inflation. Harry runs away and fears expulsion from Hogwarts for his use of magic outside of term time. At the same time Sirius Balck escapes from Azkaban Prison and this adds to Harry’s woes as it appears that Black seeks to kill him for his part in foiling Voldemort’s plans.

Harry arrives back at Hogwarts where the Quidditch season is welcome relief to the presence of the Dementors, mysterious gaurds from Azkaban searching for Sirius Black. Harry, and his friends attempt to unearth the truth surrounding Sirius Black and discover why the Dementor’s presence cause im such pain.

This is the best Harry Potter book of the series so far, which seems to get stronger as each book is released. If you read the first two books then The Prisoner of Azkaban really is like revisiting ols friends. The thoughts and actions of the characters are firmly establised within your own mind and this is one of JK Rowling’s great strengths as a writer.

The narrative will once again sit comfortably with both children and adults and those expecting the series to weaken like so many fantasy series in the past have done will be sorely dissapointed.

9/10A wonderful achievement by a wonderful author.

Ron And Hermione’s Feud Was Much More Divisive

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban: The Illustrated Edition ...

As much as Ron and Hermione cared about each other, their conflicting personalities meant total conflict was always just a minor disagreement away. With Hermione’s Crookshanks constantly on the prowl for Scabbers, it was inevitable that Ron would harbor some resentment for the cat. To make matters worse, Hermione refused to take his fear for Scabbers’ safety seriously, dismissing it as normal cat behavior and even once insinuating that Ron should have been taking better care of his rat.

Hermione wasn’t entirely at fault, as Ron never attempted to hide his contempt for the cat. Ron never missed an opportunity to insult Crookshanks’ appearance or shoo the cat away from his vicinity. With neither of them willing to compromise over their pets, Ron and Hermione had their longest feud yet during their third year. They stopped speaking to each other, and poor Harry was stuck playing mediator for two friends who did not want to reconcile. Being so swamped with work that term, Hermione might have been the worse off friend in that argument since it lost her one of her two closest companions. Then again, she may have appreciated the lack of distractions during her studies.

What Is Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban About And Why Should I Care

Care because it’s cool, guys. Really the title character of a novel is a wrongly-accused escaped convict who used to ride a flying motorcycle. This novel also features hippogriffs, crazy creepy Dementors, epic flashbacks, people who morph into animals , time travel, Quidditch matches, and more mysteries than you can shake a stick at. Aside from superficial reasons, this novel plays a really important role in the Harry Potter series. This is a major transition novel in the series it effectively ushers us out of the more childish stage and into the more adult novels, featuring a mature and self-aware Harry. We meet a huge number of characters who are really important in the later books, and we get a much-welcomed crash course into the first war with Voldemort and into Harry’s parents, James and Lily.
