Number Of Official Translations

It has been difficult to accurately determine with any degree of certainty exactly how many languages Harry Potter has been translated into. As best as can be determined , The Philosopher’s Stone has been officially translated from the original English into 79 other languages, the most recent being Maori in November 2020 preceded by Kazakh and Yiddish, in February 2020. Both Bloomsbury’s and J.K. Rowling’s sites stated in 2017 that the books have been translated into 79 languagesâhowever, their count would now likely be 88 with the subsequent release of:

• Scots
• and a second Mongolian translation

However, it has been argued that number actually represents the number of plus the original English. The number of authorised translations is not equal to the number of languages because there have been multiple authorised translations into the same language. Specifically, there have been two separate translations into each of: Korean, Macedonian, Mandarin Chinese, Mongolian, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian and Turkish . English is often included in the list of translations even though technically it should not be. Thus: 88 â 1 English â 8 double-translations = 79. It is also worthwhile to emphasise that not all seven books have been translated into these 79 languages.

Note that in some countries, such as Spain and India, the book has been translated into several local languages ; sometimes the book has been translated into two dialects of the same language in two countries .

Harry Potter And The Philosophers Stone:

Harry , Ron, and Hermione deduce that the store under the trapdoor is the Philosophers Stone , which can change metal into gold and can also give immortality. They next discover that Voldemort has been shooting unicorns in the Forbidden Forest and sipping their blood, another way to obtain immortality.

Invented Words Proper Nouns And Names

Rowling invented a great number of words and phrases for the books such as spells, incantations, magical words, items, and place names. Many of these words involve wordplay, rhyming, and historical references that are difficult to translate. A large number of spells are drawn from or inspired by Latin, and have a certain resonance with English speakers due to its relatively large proportion of Latinate-derived vocabulary. For example, priori incantatem would be familiar to many English-speaking readers as the words prior and incantation . To create a similar effect in the Hindi version, the Sanskrit, typical in mantras, has been used for the spells. Some translators have created new words themselves; others have resorted to transliteration.

Similarly, in Harry Potter and the Philosopherâs Stone, when Professor McGonagall is about to introduce Harry to Oliver Wood, she asks another professor if she can “borrow Wood for a moment”, momentarily confusing Harry; in order to retain this wordplay, the Yiddish translation renames Wood as “Oliver Holtz”, “holtz” being the Yiddish for wood, unlike the Italian one, which changed the surname to “Baston”, from “bastone”, “stick”, but returned to the original “Wood” with the second translation.

Platform Nine And Three

The ride on the Hogwarts Express starts from King’s Cross railway stationplatform 9+3â4, which is hidden from view, and reached by walking through the barrier between platforms 9 and 10.

Rowling discovered after the books were published that she had confused the layout of King’s Cross with that of Euston station, and that platforms 9 and 10 at King’s Cross were not the ones between which she had meant her magical platform to be placed. There is no platform between lines 9 and 10 at King’s Cross. To solve this, the filmmakers re-numbered platforms 4 and 5 for the duration of filming. In reality, at both King’s Cross and Euston, platforms 9 and 10 are separated by railway lines. The exterior shots in the film are of the St Pancras Renaissance London Hotel, which is part of St Pancras station, adjacent to King’s Cross station. From the outside St Pancras is much more visually dramatic than King’s Cross.

Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows

In the seventh novel, Hagrid is part of the Order of the Phoenix delegation assigned to remove Harry from the Dursleys’ home to the magic-protected Burrow. Hagrid takes Harry on the flying motorcycle he inherited from Sirius but the plan goes awry when the Order delegation is ambushed by Death Eaters. The pair narrowly make it to the Burrow after being attacked by Voldemort himself. After attending Bill Weasley and Fleur Delacour‘s wedding reception, Hagrid does not appear again until near the end of the book when it is revealed he has been driven into hiding in the mountains by the new Death Eater regime at Hogwarts.

During the climactic battle, Hagrid attempts to come to the defence of Aragog’s carnivorous children, who have been driven out of the Forbidden Forest by the Death Eaters and are now attacking both Hogwarts defenders and Death Eaters indiscriminately, but he is carried off by a swarm of them. He later turns up, captive in the Death Eaters’ camp, when Harry sacrifices himself to Voldemort. Hagrid is forced to carry Harry back to the school, not realising that Harry has survived again, and en route accuses the watching Centaurs of not doing enough to help. The Centaurs soon afterward join the fray and Hagrid takes part in the second half of the battle, felling his main nemesis among the Death Eaters, the magical-creature executioner Walden Macnair.

A Film Adaptation Of The First Book

Magic, wizards, and fairy entourage all this just was asking for the big screen. Not surprisingly, that a film adaptation was not long in coming. In October 1998, Warner Bros. purchased the film rights to the first two novels for $1.5 million. However, there were specified the deductions from sales and close cooperation of Rowling in the preparation of the project.

Initially, Steven Spielberg was considered for the role of the film director. However, on reflection, he has refused. Spielberg wanted to do a cartoon while Rowling and Warner Bros. had a different vision. Also, Spielberg was scared off the absence of creative motivation. In any case, the project would have furious commercial success, irrespective of the efforts of the director.

Rowling wanted to see Terry Gilliam as the film director. He is superb, but his views do not often coincide with the vision of a mass audience while the project had to be a mass one. In the end, Warner Bros. decided to focus on Chris Columbus. He loved to work with children, and family movies were not new for him since the days of Home Alone.

Columbus expected Liam Aiken for the role of Harry Potter, but Rowling insisted that only British actors should act in the film. In Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, the book that started it all , Harry Potter discovers his true identity in the wee hours of his eleventh birthday: he is a wizard, famous in the magical world for having vanquished the evil Lord Voldemort when he was only a baby. This revelation, delivered by a gruff, hairy giant named Hagrid, sets Harry on a fantastical journey of a lifetime.

Scholastic Corporation bought the U.S. rights at the Bologna Book Fair in April 1997 for US$105,000, an unusually high sum for a children’s book. Scholastic’s Arthur Levine thought that “philosopher” sounded too archaic for readers and after some discussion , the American edition was published in September 1998 under the title Rowling suggested, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.
