Thursday night, or, technically, Friday morning, I felt like my childhood was over. Melodramatically, of course. No, I didnt turn 18 or go through some Salinger-esque loss of innocence. I saw the last Harry Potter movie.
I may not be a die-hard, spell-casting Potter fan, but I did feel a large era of my life come to a close when that movie ended. I used to play Harry Potter on the playground in kindergarten. The Chamber of Secrets was my first midnight premiere of a movie. The Prisoner of Azkaban was the first book I read in a day. Due to these deeply planted roots, these following words could easily spin out of control into a phonetic scrapbook that 99% of the world most likely doesnt want to hear.
So Ive decided to focus on something that is probably a major reason we all love those movies, and it goes like this:
After the last shot of Daniel Radcliffes face faded off the screen, I just knew that I was surrounded by crying audience members. Yes, they will miss Harry, Ron, and Hermione. They will miss the rush of going to the next premiere. But they will definitely miss hearing that familiar B E, G G flat E, B A, G flat in a new setting for the first time. They just might not know it.

Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire
Oscar-nominated Scottish composer Patrick Doyle had to build on the foundations laid by John Williams, but take the music into murkier emotional waters, as the Potter story becomes a lot darker with this instalment his opener, the menacing The Story Continues, sets out his stall.
Plus, there are plenty of new characters to introduce including the Beauxbatons and Durmstrang students. Not to mention the gang are dabbling in a bit of YA romance with the first hints of this in the beautiful Harry in Winter.

John Williams Writes The Immortal Hedwigs Theme
By the turn of the millennium, John Williams was already regarded as one of the greatest film composers in history, with five Oscars and a slew of enduring soundtracks under his belt, including Star Wars, E.T. and Indiana Jones.
But before hiring him for Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone, Warner Bros and director Chris Columbus tested out Williams wizarding chops by asking him to write some promotional material for the film.
Williams came back with a piece of music that would later become Hedwigs Theme thats the leitmotif we hear interpolated through all eight instalments of the film franchise, as well as in spinoff Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them .
In Hedwigs Theme, the wonder and adventure of J.K. Rowlings first novel was captured.
The opening melody is played by a solo celesta, a small instrument thats played like a piano but has a light, bell-like sound. Its the same one used in the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy sequence in Tchaikovskys ballet The Nutcracker.
After the celesta solo, a flurry of violins enter, paving the way for the brass section to take over the main melody.
I remember first hearing Hedwigs Theme, one of the films producers said in a making of video. It was so clear that this was it. It felt so appropriate, sufficiently majestic and magical.
Fawkes The Phoenix John Williams
Our second-favourite bird in the Harry Potter films has to be the majestic, heroic phoenix, Fawkes. Fabulous Fawkes has healing tears and proves his worth in the Chamber of Secrets, when he helps Harry to recover from the basilisks poison. Its another beautiful, soaring piece by maestro John Williams. ;

Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part 1
Oscar-winning French composer Alexandre Desplat was tasked with creating the soundtrack as Harry, Ron and Hermione take to the road, chased by Voldemorts dark forces. Desplat used themes connected to their situations or locations , and characters, such as Dobby, Dumbledore and Voldemort.
As well as using plenty of orchestral textures, Desplat also includes unusual instruments, such as the Japanese shakuhachi flute, and a mandolin for Dobby. The darker tone of the story means that there are also detuned violins, ominous clarinet accents and portentous strings in tracks such as The Exodus, Godrics Hollow Graveyard and Bathilda Bagshot.
Movie Music UK loved the soundtracks unashamed, heart-on-sleeve emotion, which embraces the darkness of the story and runs with it, thrilling the listener with powerful action and forcing the listener to feel Harrys pain with equal skill.
Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets
John Williams returned for the second Harry Potter outing the soundtrack was again played by the London Symphony Orchestra. The main theme is dark and mysterious, while Gilderoy Lockhart brilliantly sums up thecomedic, pompous aspects of Kenneth Brannaghs celeb author and Defence Against the Dark Arts professor. The Flying Car, played when the Weasleys flying car goes to Hogwarts, is busy and has a sense of urgency
Arachnophobes look away now WilliamsThe Spiders showcases a clever descending string motif comprised of eight-note phrases Its also got some quite Psycho-esque stabbing strings for an added horror element.

Need More Harry Potter Music
The Music of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child In Four Contemporary Suites written, composed, performed and recorded by Imogen Heap is nominated for a 2019 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album. I discovered this album while doing research for this post and it is definitely my new obsession. Dont sleep on this one folks, it is a gorgeous collection of instrumental tracks from the Broadway show further reworked for this release. My favorite track is Albus Severus Potter.
The Fantastic Beasts movie soundtracks are scored by James Newton Howard, who has composed some of my favorite fantasy tracks .; So far he has scored both releases and some of the songs have a cool 1920s vibe due to the time period of the story.
Each Harry Potter movie was accompanied by a video game tie-in release for computers and gaming consoles. The music for these games was composed by Jeremy Soule and although the soundtrack releases are no longer available, you can listen to them on YouTube for a nostalgic walk through the corridors of Hogwarts.
The brilliant fan-made Harry Potter prequel, Severus Snape and the Marauders has its own really beautiful, full score by Alexander Arntzen available on Soundcloud.

Edinburgh Cafe Where Jk Rowling Wrote Harry Potter Damaged In Fire
If youve been to Edinburgh, Scotland and are a Harry Potter fan, youve likely visited The Elephant House. Its best known as the iconic cafe that author J.K. Rowling once wrote parts of Harry Potter in. Folks from everywhere flock to this cafe to stand in the place where Rowling wrote;a series many of us love and adore.
Unfortunately, the cafe suffered damage earlier this week due to a nearby fire. It was immediately evacuated and shut down soon after. David Taylor, who has owned the cafe for 25 years, spoke to the BBC;about the extent of the damage. We thought yesterday that we would just have to deal with smoke and water damage but having been allowed a quick look inside today I can see that is not the case and in fact, there is a lot of fire damage too. To say Im devastated is an understatement. I think it will take months to rebuild but its hard to say.
As of this writing, one person was taken to the hospital and one person was treated at the scene.

Conducting Performing And Other Classical Works
From 1980 to 1993 Williams served as the Boston Pops Orchestra‘s Principal Conductor, succeeding Arthur Fiedler. Williams never met Fiedler in person but spoke with him by telephone. His arrival as the Pops’ new leader in the spring of 1980 allowed him to devote part of the Pops’ first PBS broadcast of the season to presenting his new compositions for The Empire Strikes Back.
Williams almost ended his tenure with the Pops in 1984 when some players hissed while sight-reading a new Williams composition in rehearsal; Williams abruptly left the session and turned in his resignation. He initially cited mounting conflicts with his film composing schedule, but later admitted a perceived lack of discipline in, and respect from, the Pops’ ranks, culminating in this latest instance. After entreaties by the management and personal apologies from the musicians, Williams withdrew his resignation and continued as principal conductor for nine more years. In 1995 he was succeeded by Keith Lockhart, the former associate conductor of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and Cincinnati Pops Orchestra.
His bassoon concerto, “The Five Sacred Trees“, which was premiered by the New York Philharmonic and principal bassoon player Judith LeClair in 1995, was recorded for Sony Classical by Williams with LeClair and the London Symphony Orchestra. Williams was the subject of an hour-long documentary for the BBC in 1980, and was featured in a report on 20/20 in 1983.

John Williams third outing for a Harry Potter soundtrack saw him composing fewer themes, and more stand-alone pieces, such as Secrets of the Castle, The Werewolf Scene and Saving Buckbeak. Fun fact: Double Trouble is a choral piece which was inspired by the three witches scene from Shakespeares Macbeth.
Plus, theres everything from ticking clocks in Forward to Time Past, and brass, thunderous timpani and a hair-raising choir in The Dementors Converge.

Another Harry Potter film is upon us, and this time, the dangers that Harry is facing is even greater than ever. In Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, he\’s having bad dreams about Voldermort, who he believes to be making a return, and on top of it, someone is setting him up. He\’s been entered into the Tri-Wizard Tournament, a series of three increasingly dangerous tasks – and he can\’t seem to get a date for the Yule Ball. Composer John Williams had provided the score for the first three Harry Potter films, but for this round, Patrick Doyle has stepped in.
Mike Newell\’s direction is solid, but with Goblet of Fire being the longest of the Potter books, and the film only running 2.5 hours, there were a lot of subplots that were dropped. As a result, the film has a very simple plot, with a few major set pieces tying it all together. The resulting score that Doyle provides is a dark and energetic effort, but it – like the film – doesn\’t live up to the high standard set with last year\’s Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.
Doyle has done a very good job with the soundtrack to the film. Unfortunately, many times his music is buried beneath sound effects, and some cues are even cut off abruptly. At least they are given an opportunity to shine on the album – but when held up to the stellar work that Williams has done in the past three films , it just doesn\’t quite deliver.

The Film Music Of Harry Potter
The Harry Potter films are one of the most successful film series ever, up there with James Bond, Star Trek and Star Wars. There are eight Harry Potter films in total released between 2001 and 2011, all based on the books by author J.K. Rowling. Just like James Bond and Star Trek this means that many hours worth of music has been composed for the series . It is interesting to see how the music has evolved to fit the overall story arc, developing as the series has got darker, and matching the growth of the actors and audience alike who were all 10 years older by the time the series completed.
The main challenge for any film series is to make them belong to the same family, yet still allow for change and growth. Equally with the music you want the films have their own identity yet we expect some cohesion between them. With Harry Potter’s music, change came naturally with 4 different composers. The series had the potential to use a leitmotif approach in its music, with themes for different characters or concepts, like the “Star Wars” and “Lord of the Rings” films. It did this to a small extent but it would have been difficult across all 8 films with so many different composers. However each composer repeated themes across the films they scored, and there was some quoting of thematic material, most particularly Hedwig’s Theme by John Williams which became the overall Harry Potter theme.
